Milestone’s first Premier Collectible Firearms Auction of 2023, slated for March 11 and 12, promises to be a crowdpleaser with its high-caliber selection of U.S., British, German, French and Japanese productions. The 1,452-lot selection is led by superiorquality antique, military and civilian arms from long-held collections. The extensive array of cased early revolvers is, by far, the best ever offered by Milestone. The lineup includes a stellar matched pair of ca. 1860 Belgian Brevete Colt Navy black-powder revolvers with consecutive serial numbers (7355 and 7356), est. $25,000$55,000, and a cased pair of 1851 Colt Square Guard Navy revolvers (Serial Nos. 2995 and 2759), est. $20,000-$32,000. A firearm with an imposing presence is the rare 3rd Model Colt Dragoon. This type of gun was intended for use by mounted cavalrymen. Made in 1860 in a production run of 200, this hefty .44-caliber black-powder model weighs in at 4 lbs. and 2 oz. It is engraved with the well-known “Ranger and Indian” fighting scene and has WL Ormsby markings. It will have a $7,000$12,000 estimate.

Netflix’s “The PEZ Outlaw” Shows The Dark Side Of Collectible Speculation And Greed
comic book character of the same name. By the early to mid-1990s, the POG and Beanie Babies crazes were in full swing. And if that was not enough to cause you to go insane, there was another, lesser known speculative bubble taking place that occurred right before the advent of online auctions featuring colorful plastic candy dispensers.
By Shawn Surmick
If you lived through the 1990s in the antiques and collectibles trade and survived, you should be given some type of award. The 1990s were a very strange time in the collectibles trade with the birth and continuation of several known speculative bubbles. In the late 1980s, a run up in modern era sports cards would later become known as the junk wax era. During this same time, there was massive speculation occurring in modern era comic books that started around the time of the 1989 release of Tim Burton’s “Batman” movie based on the
In the year 2023, PEZ collecting has been eclipsed by more popular collecting categories by a wide margin. Video games, Pokemon, comic books, and vintage action figures have all gained traction in the past few years in the trade, while other collecting categories have lost ground. That said, back in the early 1990s, PEZ collecting was experiencing a massive spurt in growth. Fueled in part by the rise of toy collecting conventions and online e-commerce, PEZ collecting was all the rage. The PEZ company was well poised to take advantage of this growth, as it was not only vintage dispensers that were climbing in value at this time, but also modern era PEZ releases were
being snapped up as soon as they could be made. Premiums were being paid for scarce and uncommon dispensers that were released in overseas markets only. This caused a massive gold rush of sellers eager to get their hands of these perceived to be scarce dispensers and sell them into the North American market for a hefty profit. Many lucky sellers were able to take advantage of this kind of arbitrage, and the advent of eBay made it all too easy.
During this time there were several eccentric characters that made a name for themselves buying and selling PEZ dispensers. One such individual by the name of Steve Glew took PEZ speculation to new heights. He was able to elicit a cult following of collectors willing to pay a premium for the dispensers he got ahold of in overseas markets. Recently, Netflix released a documentary about his exploits. The film is aptly titled, “The PEZ Outlaw,” and every collector, regardless as to whether or not you like PEZ, should watch it. It is actually a cautionary tale of
collectible speculation gone wrong. According to the documentary, Steve Glew knew the value of hard work at a young age. Glew grew up poor in Michigan. Then he discovered PEZ while selling toy premiums he got from cereal boxes. One look at how much some PEZ dispensers were selling for at the time was all it took, and he was on an adventure to locate the hardest to find PEZ. Due to how PEZ was marketed, opportunities were available in the market if one was industrious enough. The PEZ company was started in the 1920s in Austria. By the 1950s, the company was a success and opened up a location to serve the U.S. market. Interestingly enough, a lot of the best dispensers never made never made it to the U.S. markets. By the 1980s, demand was high for some of these releases. This gave Glew a brilliant idea; he would go directly to the factory in Europe and attempt to import some of these dispensers that he knew U.S. collectors would pay a premium for. At the time, few thought the idea
would work, but he found a way, and a massive business was born. Unfortunately, Glew got a little too greedy and attempted to take on the PEZ company directly. This was a major misstep, as taking on a multimillion dollar company is never wise. The U.S. division of PEZ was able to anticipate Steve’s moves and simply outmaneuvered him. Steve had invested sizable sums of capital in his business venture and was forced to admit defeat. It is for this reason that “The PEZ Outlaw” should be required viewing for any speculator in the antiques and collectibles trade.
In the year 2023, there are several collecting categories that echo what was happening with PEZ collecting in the early 1990s. Both Funko Pop and Lego give off similar vibes at present time, with collectors paying a premium for these products on the secondary market. “The PEZ Outlaw” shows us exactly why nothing is guaranteed in these markets. PEZ is no longer the collecting juggernaut it once was. Even the sought after vintage
dispensers manufactured in the 1950s and 1960s have been selling well below their 1990s highs, with few exceptions, and this market isn’t coming back any time soon. Speculators, beware.
One of the greatest things about the current streaming wars that are taking place between Netflix, HBO Max, among others, is that there is no shortage of documentaries surrounding the antiques and collectibles trade. In an upcoming article, I will be giving my thoughts on “Beanie Mania,” a documentary featuring collectibles expert Harry Rinker on the subject of the great Beanie Baby Bubble that was occurring right alongside the PEZ craze. Spoiler alert: That craze didn’t end well either, as some of you are all too well aware!

Seven Paintings By Folk Artist Maud Lewis Combine For Nearly $200,000
Six original oil on board paintings by the renowned Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-70), plus a watercolor and pen on paper by Lewis, sold for a combined $198,830 in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s online-only Canadiana and Folk Art
auction held on Feb. 11. Nearly 300 lots in a wide array of categories came up for bid. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars.
As expected, the Maud Lewis painting titled “Three Black Cats” was the group’s top achiever. It bested the
$25,000-$30,000 pre-sale estimate and then some by bringing $44,250. It was also the auction’s top lot. The work was a serial image only found in the mid-to-late 1960s. This one was likely painted in 1966. The 12-by-12.5 inch (sight, less frame) painting was artist signed. The other oil on boards included “Spring Scene” ($35,400); “Horse Pulling Logs” ($24,780); “Sandy Cove Harbour Scene” ($25,960); “Oxen in Winter” ($23,600); and “Covered Bridge” ($25,960). The watercolor and pen on paper titled “Harbour Scene” doubled as a handwritten letter, folded in quarters into a card and addressed to Eva Gray, a teacher, cousin
and friend. It brought $18,880.
Maud Lewis has, over time, become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity but died in poverty, despite enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create an artistic style uniquely hers.
Lewis’s style and inspiration were such that she sparked a boom in folk art in her home province of Nova Scotia. Though she rarely left her tiny house, her works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her

Tiffany Studios’ “Jesus In A Field Of Lilies” Window Sells For $237,500
Ca. 1898 Monumental Piece Purchased By, And To Be Installed In Western U.S. Church
Fontaine’s important Fine and Decorative Arts Auction on Jan. 28 surpassed its high estimate to total $2.5 million.
The 550-lot auction saw strong performers in nearly every category, with a sell-through rate of 91 percent.
“The auction was very busy and well received, with over
7,000 approved bidders. “I think in general the market is good for quality items in every category,” said auctioneer and owner John Fontaine.
Among the “quality items” Fontaine refers to was a wellexecuted Tiffany Studios window, “Jesus in a Field of Lilies,” that went for $237,500, nearly
doubling its high estimate. The ca. 1898 window, featuring plated, leaded and confetti glass, measured an impressive 9 feet, 11 inches-by-7 feet, 5 inches. Not sized for the average home, it makes sense the
winning bidder was a church. Located in the western part of the United States, the buyers told Fontaine they plan to restore and install the window in the church.
Another top lot in the sale was an 18-carat white and yellow gold ring centered with an intense yellow square radiant cut diamond of 10 carats surrounded by two carats of round brilliant white diamonds that attracted competitive bidding, particularly among retail buyers. In the end, the ring went out at $181,250 to a buyer in Chicago, Ill. It was one of several pieces of jewelry centered with yellow diamonds from a Los Angeles estate that all did well, going to buyers in Israel, Chicago, and New Jersey, among other locations. Another notable
piece in this grouping was an 18-carat yellow gold ring with a 9-carat yellow diamond framed by nearly one carat of white diamonds that earned $62,500.
Tiffany lamps have a long tradition of being strong performers at auction, and floor lamps in particular have been standouts in several recent sales. Leading a select grouping of about two dozen examples in the auction was a “Curtain Border” floor lamp, ca. 1910, 78.5 inches tall, which sold for $100,000, and a “Peony” floor lamp, ca, 1910, 64 inches tall, that made $93,7500. A “Moorish” and “Turtle-Back” chandelier, ca. 1905, also did well, realizing $81,250.
Quite a few items saw bidders drive prices over estimate, including a monumental
Swiss Black Forest carvedfigural clock with matching stand by Ulrich Leuthold, Lucerne, ca. 1880. The clock, standing 85 inches tall overall, was surmounted by an elaborately carved eagle above three mountain goats and realized $34,375.
Rounding out the auction were a ca. 1911 Oriel Cabinet Co. “Norman Suite” dining room set, Grand Rapids, Mich., that sold for $30,000; a signed William Lester Stevens oil on canvas, “Village in the Winter” that was in a Florida collection before bringing $26,250; an American carved oak tall case clock with a J.J. Elliott movement, late 19th century, carved with angels, scrollwork, filigree and a mythical face, 97.5 inches tall, $22,500; and a pair of large Italian carved marble

death, she has become an iconic well-known figure, and a symbol of Nova Scotia.
Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. is no stranger to Maud Lewis. Her work has been featured in several past sales, including one held in October, in which 11 paintings by the artist sailed past their high estimates to bring a combined $559,510. The top lot was “Winter Sleigh Ride” (est. $20,000-$25,000); it finished at $100,300. Market demand for her work continues to grow.
Another Nova Scotia folk artist, Joe Norris (1924-96), also did well in the auction, as four of his paintings
combined for a total of $49,560. The top seller was a ca. 1980 oil on canvas titled “The Lighthouse and Three Schooners,” a large (39-by59 inches, less frame) depiction of a fishing village including lobster boats and fishermen, which sold for $22,420.
Norris began painting in 1972, after a major heart attack forced his early retirement from the fishing and construction trades. His works depicted life along the seacoast, with scenes of wildlife, nature and landscapes painted in bold, saturated colors. Norris’s work included painted chairs, tables and chests in addition to his two-dimensional paintings.
After his work was discovered in 1975 by Maine antique dealer Chris Huntington, Norris was able to live off of his income as an artist rather than disability allowance. Paintings by the artist can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of History.
The ca. 1965 oil-on-beaverboard painting by Maud Lewis (1903-70), titled “Sandy Cove Harbour Scene,” a serial image featuring Sandy Cove along Digby Neck, realized $25,960.
“There is strong demand for paintings from the masters of Canadian Folk Art, and this continues to be reflected by the prices realized by Maud Lewis, Joe Norris and Joseph Sleep,” said Ben
Lennox of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “It’s exciting to witness our Canadian material folk heritage soar. Collectors remain hungry to add the best from these important collections.”
Lennox added, “These collections have taken decades to accumulate, and being able to bid on the cream of these collections isn’t lost on collectors. That’s reflective of the prices realized.”
The rest of the auction was loaded with items that include advertising signs, art, art pottery, Canadiana, clocks, decoys, folk art, lamps and lighting, pottery and stoneware, rugs and more. The auction attracted 459 registered bidders, who combined to place 6,377 bids. All 291 lots were sold, and 50 percent of the top 50 lots exceeded estimates. The auction grossed $491,264. All prices quoted are inclusive of an 18 percent buyer’s premium.

with six lights per door in the upper section and the original red and amber paint realized $12,980.
A book form slide lid spruce gum box made in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, in 1896 of pine, mahogany and bone inlay, featuring a central star surrounded by a heart, diamond, club and spade, blasted through its $700$900 estimate to finish at
$10,620, while a traditional folk art powder horn (Jenkins family, Newfoundland, ca. 1850), an exuberantly decorated and heavily carved cow horn with wooden plug and rope strap, 16 inches in length, sold for $5,015.

sights, and British Crown proof stamps on the tang and barrel breech. Only 6,000 of these guns were produced, all during the Crimean War. Truly a museum-worthy example, this Sharps 1855 is entered with a $10,000-$20,000 estimate.
Miles King, co-owner of Milestone Auctions, commented that the quality of firearms in the auction represents coast-to-coast efforts to secure the types of rare guns that are of most interest to today’s collectors. “In preparation for this sale, our trucks got quite a workout, delivering one gun collection after another to our gallery. We’ve had a presence at every major gun show of the past several months, and one thing we really enjoyed was talking to collectors and getting their feedback. It has been a pleasure to hear that collectors follow our sales and like how we conduct our business. They know we work hard to give every collection, large or small, the attention
it deserves. As a result, we’ve gotten some fantastic consignments for the March sale, some of the best we’ve ever handled. We look forward to welcoming both our old and new friends in the hobby to this collectorfriendly event.”
The March 11 and 12 Premier Collectible Firearms Auction will be held at Milestone’s gallery located at 38198 Willoughby Parkway, Willoughby (suburban Cleveland), Ohio. All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the internet through Milestone’s own bidding platform, LiveAuctioneers, Proxibid, Invaluable or iCollector. Exhibition To Focus On Berenice Abbott’s 1929 Photographic Album Of New York City
Unique Show Sheds Insight On Early Creative Process Of Photography
Recently open at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Berenice Abbott’s “New York Album, 1929” presents selections from a unique unbound album of photographs of New York City created by American photographer Berenice Abbott (1898–1991), shedding light on the creative process of one of the great artists of the 20th century. Consisting of 266 small black-and-white prints arranged on 32 pages, the
album is a kind of photographic sketchbook that offers a rare glimpse of an artist’s mind at work. In addition to some 25 framed album pages, the exhibition will feature photographs from The Met collection of Paris streets by Eugène Atget, whose archive Abbott purchased and promoted; views of New York by her contemporaries Walker Evans and Margaret BourkeWhite; and selections from Abbott’s grand documentary
project, “Changing New York (1935–39).” The exhibition is made possible by The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Inc.
“Berenice Abbott’s groundbreaking work in photography continues to inspire and captivate audiences today, nearly a century after she first began documenting the world around her,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met.

18th- and 19th-century Eastern Shore raised panel furniture; 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century fine art; decoys and sporting art; books; Persian rugs; firearms; silver; maps; tools, and much more. The furniture category is a strength. An important 18thcentury Eastern Shore of Virginia pine raised panel two-door cupboard/clothes press, ca. 1760, Accomack Co., Va., is an expected highlight and has been featured in several publications. An early 19th-century Eastern Shore of Virginia pine raised panel four-door wall cupboard with original bracket feet has also been featured in several antique publications. An Eastern Shore of Virginia pine tapered leg single drawer “Wise Plantation” farm table with two board top, ca. 1800, is another standout regional piece. There will be an array of 18th-century English and French furniture and more period American furniture such as an 18th-century Pennsylvania walnut eightdrawer tall chest.

Carlisle Events Announces Sweetheart Of A Deal
Special Online-Only Discounted Tickets For Select Events
The automotive events at Carlisle are affordable family fun for those who purchase a spectator admission ticket. There aren’t many entertainment venues that offer $10 to $20 admission tickets (depending on the event) that in turn allow upwards of 10 hours of entertainment once onsite. In addition, with kids 12 and under admitted for free of charge, bringing a family of four to a Carlisle car show is, hands down, one of the best “bang for the buck” options in central Pennsylvania.
What was already super affordable is now even more so with special online-only discount pricing on tickets for the Carlisle Import and Performance Nationals (IPN), Carlisle GM Nationals (GM), and Fall Carlisle (Fall). These three shows take place Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13; Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24; and Wednesday to Sunday, Sept. 27 and Oct. 1. Each of the three big shows offers a variety of historic automotive displays, parts shopping, activities, and more. Further, they carry an in-person ticket cost of $13 (IPN), $12 (GM), and $13 (Fall) per event.
Now, with the “Sweetheart of a Deal”
Valentine’s Day Promotion, those prices, which are
already discounted online by $2, get an extra dollar’s savings from now to two weeks before each show. Those savings mean that a spectator coming to Carlisle for IPN can pay just $10 for admission until May 1. Admission to the GM Nationals is just $9 between until June 12, and a ticket to Fall Carlisle to shop the massive automotive flea market is just $10 until Sept. 18. Spectator tickets must be purchased online within the promotional period to receive the extra discount.
Click on “Tickets and Gift Cards” on the website home page and then click on “Buy Tickets” under the specific event header. The discount will automatically be applied within the purchase transaction during the promotional time period, which began Feb. 13. Online spectator admission prices for these three events return to their original prices two weeks preceding each event.
Other events on the Carlisle car show schedule also have discounts in place, either by way of standard online ticket purchases or in person by showcasing a valid military ID (ID holder only). In addition, events offer a spectator ticket purchase option that includes parking, and, all-new in 2023, Carlisle Events gift cards.

“Abbott’s insightful and powerful images provide a window into the New York of the past, while also reminding us of the city’s enduring vitality and resilience.”
Born in Ohio, Abbott moved to New York City in 1918 and to Paris in 1921. She learned photography as a darkroom assistant in Man Ray’s studio and soon established herself as a prominent portraitist of the Parisian avant-garde. Through Man Ray, Abbott met the aging French photographer Eugène Atget, whose documentation of Paris and its environs struck her as a model of modern photographic art. Following Atget’s sudden death in 1927, she purchased his archive of some 8,000 prints and 1,500 glass negatives and set about promoting
his work through exhibitions and publications.
In January 1929, after eight years in Europe, Abbott boarded an ocean liner to New York City for what was intended to be a short visit.
Upon arrival, she found the city transformed and ripe with photographic potential.
“When I saw New York again, and stood in the dirty slush, I felt that here was the thing I had been wanting to do all my life,” she recalled. Inspired by Atget, Abbott traversed the city with a handheld camera, photographing its skyscrapers, storefronts, bridges, elevated trains, and neighborhood street life. She pasted these “notes” into a standard black-page album, arranging them by subject and locale. As the immediate precursor to her 1930s WPA project, “Changing New York,” Abbott’s “New York Album” marks a key moment of transition in
her career: from Europe to America and from studio portraiture to urban documentation. The exhibition will be accompanied by an online feature that identifies, for the first time, the locations of many of the photographs in the album.
Berenice Abbott’s “New York Album, 1929” is organized by Mia Fineman, curator in the Department of Photographs, with assistance from Virginia McBride, research assistant in the Department of Photographs, both at The Met.
