This 1864 Lincoln/Johnson campaign parade flag is estimated at $10,000-$20,000. The race for the White House, with all its hoopla and historical tradition, is now in full swing. With primaries and upcoming conventions as their inspiration, the team members at America’s original pop culture auction house, Hake’s Americana, has curated an auction grouping of rare and early political memorabilia that’s predicted to win collector approval in all 50 states.

Hake’s 2,784-lot online, phone and absentee Auction #217, which closes for bidding March 15 to 17, features more than 600 lots of investmentgrade political antiques and collectibles. The centerpiece of the political section is Lot 24, a spectacular 1864 Lincoln and Johnson campaign parade flag. The 8-by-11-inch oil cloth canton with 34 stars is the first one Hake’s president, Alex Winter, has ever seen. “Examples of 1864 Lincoln campaign items are much scarcer than their 1860 counterparts, and the Continued on page 2

The Quimper Club International held its 17th annual meeting in Seattle, Wash., from Sept. 21 to the 24, 2015. Club members gathered in the Crown Plaza Seattle to renew friendships and tour the Emerald City. Quimper pottery is a collectible tin-glazed, hand-painted ceramic made in Quimper, France. The club’s business meeting was brief. The big news at the meeting was the announcement that next year’s gathering will be held in Kansas City, Mo. A post-meeting trip

will take place to nearby Bentonville, Ark., to visit the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. The highlight of every annual meeting is the show and sale. Six dealers presented a dazzling array of unusual pieces of Quimper pottery, ranging from a Petit Breton plate bordered with yellow and blue bands priced at $15 to a rare circa 1880 botanical server for $950. same holds true for flags,” said Winter. “The parade flag in our sale is a rare survivor and a truly important artifact of American campaign history.” Its auction estimate is $10,000$20,000. In 1848, Lewis Cass and William Butler were running mates on the national Democratic ticket for president and vice president, respectively. Auction Lot 12 is a silk campaign “coattail” ribbon promoting the candidates. Of the four ribbon variations that were produced, only ten extant examples of any type are known in the collecting world. The one offered by Hake’s is a new discovery. It bears the Coat of Arms of Pennsylvania and a misspelling in the text that reads: “Our Country Right Or Worng” [sic.]. Any Cass ribbon is

Hake’s predicts a winning bid of $5,000-$10,000. Yet another special piece is Lot 477, a rare Benjamin Harris Co., button with photographic images of the four 1960 primary candidates - John Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller, Adlai Stevenson and Richard Nixon - positioned around a picture of then-sitting president Dwight Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie. The estimate is $5,000-$10,000. Hake’s launched the political-collectibles bandwagon in 1967. Since then, the company that Ted Hake founded has become the industry leader in not only political and historical memorabilia, but also many other pop-culture categories. “Our goal is to make every Hake’s auction more exciting and entertaining than the last, and the way we do that is by continuing to raise the bar as we seek out superior collections with revered provenance,” said Winter.

antiquesandauctionnews.net In total, the March auction catalog spans 200+ categories of popular collectibles, including popular music. After achieving estimate-smashing prices on original concert posters in its November 2015 auction, Hake’s will build on that momentum by rolling out one of the finest and most diverse music memorabilia selections it has offered to date. The March sale’s comprehensive array of posters covers jazz, country, blues, R&B, rock and other genres. Among the most coveted are two that publicized Jimi Hendrix concerts. robot body!” A very rare example of Silver Age “Doom Patrol” cover art, and possibly the only one of its type from that era ever to come to auction, it is cataloged with a $35,000$50,000 estimate. Superman fans couldn’t get enough of the previous two offerings of rarities from the Franco Toscanini estate collection, so Hake’s has responded with a third round of scarce collectibles with Toscanini provenance. “Franco loved the bold, colorful graphics on Superman toys and advertising items. We’ve chosen some of the best from his collection for our March sale,” said Winter. Among them is Lot 2,139, an early 1940s American Toy Works Superman Action Target game in its beautiful original box with a spotlight image of “The Man of Steel.” Described in Hake’s catalog as “one of the bestdesigned, rarest and most sought after of all Superman toys,” and noted as the first the company has auctioned in its entire 49+ years of operation, the game is estimated at $2,000-$5,000. Appealing to both vintage advertising and Superman collectors, Lot 2,151 is a large, circa-1941 linen-mounted store display sign touting Superman Bread. “Now on Sale,” reads the shield held up by Superman, with an invitation below it for boys and girls to join the Superman Junior Defense League of America. One of three known examples, its auction estimate is $2,000-$5,000. Disneyana is another category in which Hake’s has distinguished itself. In the past, the company has auctioned exceptional rarities from the

went on. Each of the two posters is estimated at $5,000$10,000. More than 100 CGC-graded comic books await bidders. Leading the pack is Lot 1,670, Amazing SpiderMan #129 in 9.8 condition. “This comic is significant because it features the first appearance of Marvel Comics’ vigilante character ‘The Punisher,’ as well as Spider-Man villain ‘The Jackal,’” noted Winter. It should land in the $5,000$10,000 range. Two show-stopping pieces of original art lead their category. Lot 1,704 is Margaret Brundage’s (American, 1900-76) large color cover art for the June 1937 pulp magazine “Weird Tales.” Lush and provocative, the depiction of a scantily clad, wide-eyed woman in the arms of a muscular, golden man illustrated the cover story titled “The Carnal God.” “Margaret Brundage is greatly respected by collectors. She was the first famous woman artist to distinguish herself in the pulp-magazine art field. She created covers for 39 consecutive issues of ‘Weird Tales’ from June 1933 to August 1936, and in total, produced 66 original-artwork covers for the magazine. She had a remarkable run,” said Winter. The unique original artwork presented by Hake’s is estimated at $50,000-$75,000. Another premier example of original art is Lot 1,726, Bob Brown’s (American, 1915-77) pen-and-ink cover for the May 1965 issue of “Doom Patrol.” The electrifying image depicts Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man clutching Elasti-Girl with one tentacle and Negative Man with

Maurice Sendak, and Doug and Pat Wengel collections, as well as many others. A wealth of desirable Disney pieces can be found in Auction #217, including Lot 1,940, a wonderful circa1938 Chad Valley boxed set of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” dolls. Each doll is dressed, has a molded and flocked face with expressive painted features, and retains a Disney/Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (movie) string tag. The estimate is $5,000$10,000. Another Disney treasure, Lot 2,534 is a very rare 1935 Mickey Mouse One Cent Bubble Gum display box with amusing images of Mickey blowing a large bubble. Believed to be a sole survivor, the box is entered with a $5,000-$10,000 estimate.

The 1848 Lewis Cass/William Butler presidential/VP campaign coattail ribbon is estimated at $5,000-$10,000. A small but select coins and currency section is led by Lot 808, an 1812 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle coin graded MS 63 by PCGS. “A coin of this type is of great interest to collectors, not only because 1812 was the final year this coinage was struck, but also because few American gold coins of any kind were minted that year due to budgetary restraints in funding the War of 1812,” said Winter. The $5 gold coin is estimated at $20,000-$35,000. In the March auction Hake’s will expand its horological footprint to include fine contemporary timepieces along with antique gold pocket watches, a specialty they have included in past sales. Among the luxury brands from which to choose are Rolex - Lot 861, a circa-1960 Oyster Perpetual “Pepsi” GMTMaster - and Patek Philippe Lot 863, 18 carat gold open-face pocket watch. Each of these highlight lots is estimated at $2,000-$5,000. Hake’s Americana Auction #217 has opened for bidding by phone, mail or online at www.hakes.com. The first session will close on Tuesday, March 15, while the second session will conclude on Thursday, March 17. An interim day will take place on Wednesday, March 16, so that bidders can peruse the catalog and prepare for further bidding. In my last column, I wrote about the mental challenges of purchasing something for your collection that you know nothing about. Do you take the risk or not? In the case of the Indian scroll, I yielded the piece and held onto my money. In this issue, I am going to look at another piece that I spotted the same day. So it was later that same day of hitting three antique malls in five hours that I spotted a second piece that intrigued me. Having moved to the bottom of the Chesapeake region, I am fascinated by the story of the ships that came (and still do come) up the bay to all the ports. So when I looked up on the wall and saw an oversize 19th-century print of a steam packet liner with notes that it shipped from Baltimore to Norfolk, I was intrigued. The price of $325 was not bad and it was nicely framed in a period deep oak frame.

up the liquid and you get a nice spreading stain. I have seen these all too often. So why was I giving this piece a second look? It had condition issues and would be expensive to repair. To be honest, what drew me to this piece was its massive scale (3-by-4-feet), graphic nature, and price. It was a lot of print for a low price. It would look great and someday could be restored. That was the mental argument that went through my head. I walked around for another 20 minutes thinking about the piece. And in the end - I let it go. While I am fascinated by the maritime history of this area, it was a risk that I was not comfortable taking. So at the end of a long day of hunting, I had nothing to show. The girls had found things for their collections and I was feeling that urge to find something. Next time, the hit that turned out to be a miss.

Like the scroll, it was something that was outside of my personal collecting sphere. In New Mexico, where the sun fades everything, I had shied away from purchasing prints. So this large print would be a foray back to an area that I had not purchased in years. Okay, one can teach an old dog new tricks and so I was okay with the idea of this being a print. As I looked at the piece, a big problem did catch my eye. The work had been framed a long time ago and my guess is that it either hung in an embarkation or travel office or possibly later in a restaurant. The wooden backing had begun to burn through the paper and the piece was heavily foxed and browned. To make matters worse, it suffered from one of the worst problems that occur with overzealous use of glass cleaner. This is when someone sprays the glass with cleaner and then does not wipe it up fast enough so that it pools and collects in the bottom groove. The paper then wicks

said Rich Bertoia. “Its molding effects are extraordinary and it has an appealing folky look. Only about five examples of this toy are known to have survived.” The final section of the sale is devoted to cast-iron mechanical banks from the Clive Devenish collection, including The Giant, a Motor bank, a particularly nice Boy Scout, and two variations of the Teddy Roosevelt bank, one with a brown trunk; the other with a gray trunk. In addition, there are mechanical banks from other advanced collections, among them a Panorama, Jonah and the Whale, Santa at Chimney, Professor Pug Frog, and a Mule Entering Barn with the roof painted an unusual variant color of orange. Guns Fit For A President, Royalty, Or A Secessionist Featured At Julia’s Selections From The Paul Tudor Jones II Collection Will Highlight The Two-Day Sale James D. Julia’s first Firearms Auction of the year should be another humdinger. Extraordinary arms from fabulous old time collections will intersperse the sale. Monday, March 14, will begin with Julia’s new Sporting & Collector Firearms session. The first Sporting & Collector session premiered with Julia’s October 2015 sale. The special session was developed by the Julia Company to specifically serve clients with more moderately priced firearms. Over the years, Julia’s Auctions have focused on and specialized in rare, historic and expensive firearms. The Sporting & Collector session includes material with the average sale values in the range of $2,000$8,000. The first October sale was a great success and the March sale will surely be a repeat of the fall auction. Monday’s sale will include the estate collection of wellknown Bill Stewart of Texas. His rare Smith & Wesson #1 Volcanic, in good to very good condition, and estimated at $7,500-$12,500. His rare Colt Second Model Dragoon with prototype or experimental back strap slot for stock carries a presale estimate of $10,000-$20,000. His very rare Winchester Model 73 Saddle ring Carbine with socket bayonet carries a presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000. His historic Winchester Model 86, known as the “Murder Steer Gun,” once belonged to Private Jim Putnam of Company D of the Frontier Battalion Texas Rangers (1890-93) and is estimated at $10,000-$20,000. From the collection of Joel Hankinson is a fine Colt SA Army Artillery, one of the finest known, estimated at $12,000-$15,000. The Brad Shepherd collection of engraved and collectible Colts is also in this session. His incredible pair of Colt Second Generation SAs engraved by Jerry Harper are estimated at $8,000-$15,000. The Dr. Robert G. Cox estate collection features a large offering of fine Colt New

Line, House, Single Actions, and others. His pair of cased factory engraved New Line revolvers with pearl grips is estimated at $3,000-$5,000. And Dr. Cox’s factory engraved Colt Open Top with Wexell & DeGress grips in a burlwood case comes estimated at $2,500-$3,500. The Carmen Gianforte collection of Reid Knuckle Dusters is believed to be the largest single collection of its type in the world. Featured in this sale will be his very rare large frame .41 ca. Knuckle Duster in very good to fine condition and estimated at $8,000-$12,000. An extremely rare

Egnor, the only known factory inscribed Knuckle Duster, is also in excellent condition and carries a presale estimate of $2,250-$3,250. Fine and moderately priced sporting arms are also included, including a number of Parkers. A Parker VH 28 ga., nicely restored, is estimated at $8,000-$12,000. A fine high original condition Lefever GE grade 20 ga. carries a presale estimate of $4,000-$6,000. An extremely fine Winchester Model 42 Field Grade with its original box and hangtags is estimated at $3,500-$5,500. From the Timothy Scott collection of Sporting Arms is a beautiful engraved Krieghoff Ulm Brevis double rifle with extra combo barrels and two scopes. This excellent cased set carries a reasonable $4,000-$6,000 estimate. A rare Nazi M-1940 Double Decal SS WWII helmet is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. Things should heat up on Tuesday, March 15. This

This is a Lefever Optimist 12 ga. “The Optimus Grade” is the highest quality shotgun ever produced by the Lefever Arms Co. and this rare treasure is estimated at $75,000-$125,000. Presidential guns from the south of the United States are also represented by his extraordinarily rare Nimschke engraved and ivory stocked Model 1866 carbine with a relief carved Mexican eagle. The gun was purportedly made for Emperor Maximilian and at one time in the collection of his Excellency Porfirio Diaz, President of Mexico. This superb treasure carries a $150,000-$250,000 estimate. original movie scripts, manuscripts, and music scores. Photographers will appreciate the daguerreotypes, stereoviews, cabinet cards, and photos for sale. Other areas include broadsides, maps, catalogs, and design related materials, among practically countless others. “Even people who don’t ‘officially’ collect ephemera will love this event. And odds are, they will leave with at least one item that catches

their fancy,” said show producer Marvin Getman. “Walking through this fair is a walk through history. Showgoers get to see how people lived before the digital age - long before smartphones and computers shaped the way people define friends, correspondence, and communication.” The Hyatt Regency Greenwich is located at 1800 East Putnam Avenue. Show hours on Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hotel offers free parking. Tickets at the door for the two-day event will be $14 for adults. College students with ID and children under 18 will be admitted free of charge with a paid adult. For discount two-day tickets or half price Sunday only tickets, visit www.bookandpaperfairs.com/ ephemera-fair. This event is held in conjunction with the Ephemera Society of America’s annual convention, titled “Ephemera36.” This year’s theme is “Politics, Patriotism & Protest,” and examines the use of ephemera in promoting political, patriotic, and protest movements, emphasizing issues as race, gender, and war. Mark your calendar for what will undoubtedly be one of the finest celebrations of all things ephemera in North America this year. The Ephemera Fair will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Old Greenwich, Conn., on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20. Ephemera are items made from paper that were not made to stand the test of time, and have since become collectible. Popular categories include correspondence, advertising materials, historical documents, posters, tickets, scores and scripts, cards, and many others. The Ephemera Fair - the largest show of its type in the country - is worth a trip from anywhere, and is a familyfriendly, exciting, and unique destination for browsing, shopping, and learning. And there will be some absolutely amazing items on display as well. Can’t miss highlights include five pages of Braille pages typed by Helen Keller on a Braille typewriter; 100 pages of food themed sheet music from the 1900s; and an archive of materials, including a blood-stained suicide note, from pyramid-schemer Philip Musica, also known as F. Donald Coster. Coster, who could be compared to Bernie Madoff, is the man behind the 1938 McKesson & Robbins scandal. He stole $3 million

The full-year estimate of visitor spending in New York, by out-of-town visitors to the museum in fiscal year 2015, is $5.41 billion. During that fiscal year (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015), The Metropolitan Museum of Art welcomed a record 6.3 million visitors, 26 percent of them from NYC, and 74 percent from outside the five boroughs. Economic impact is calculated using the standard estimated sales tax rate. The latest economic impact survey was conducted by the museum’s office of market research. history and other exhibitions clearly influenced the economic impact number, which is the highest ever reported by our survey,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum. In the summer 2015 period, the Costume Institute’s exhibition “China: Through the Looking Glass,” on view May 7 through Sept. 7, drew 815,992 visitors. Attendance for “The Roof Garden Commission: Pierre Huyghe” was 483,208 during its run from May 12 through Nov. 1. And “Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends” had a total attendance of 254,750 from June 30 through Oct. 4. The survey was conducted from May 12 through Sept. 7. During that period, the Met welcomed 2.5 million visitors, 74 percent of whom came from outside the five boroughs of New York City - 28 percent were domestic and 46 percent were international tourists. Eighty-three percent of travelers reported staying overnight in the city and, of these, 75 percent stayed in a hotel, B&B, hostel, or rented apartment. The average length of stay was 6.7 days. These out-of-town visitors reported spending an average of $1,145 per person ($762 for lodging, sightseeing, entertainment, admission to museums, and local transportation, and another $383 for shopping). Fifty-four percent of Met out-of-town visitors to the exhibitions cited the museum as a key motivating factor in visiting New York City. Using a scale of zero to ten, 54 percent gave a rating of 8 or above when asked how important seeing the Met was in motivating them to visit New York. The primary purpose of traveling to New York was pleasure for 84 percent of visitors, business for 4 percent, and combined business and pleasure for 12 percent. The estimated economic impact is $511 million for the portion of visitors who
