Spring Antique Toy Auction Set For Pook & Pook Inc. With Noel Barrett Märklin Painted Tin Clockwork Musical Carousel Among Standout Lots In March 24 Auction
The military toy collection of Jose Chase, Portland, Ore., consists of 150 lots.

backbone for this partnership. Similarly, Barrett’s smaller auction house benefits from Pook & Pook Inc.’s infrastructure and strong online and media presence. Continuing their proud tandem partnership, this year’s spring toy sale is certainly one that both companies can be proud of and is a great continuation of this collaboration. The sale will begin with a significant group of military figures from the collection of Jose Chase, a collector from Portland, Ore. Over 150 lots of painted composition wartime soldiers will cross the

Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., held a public auction on Feb. 17 at Encks Banquet and Conference Center in Manheim highlighted by setting a new auction record for an Abner Zook diorama. There were 183 registered bidders in attendance. The large Abner Zook threedimensional painting/diorama of a six-horse team pulling a Conestoga Wagon crossing a stream with waterfalls and mountains in the background sold for $28,050 to a private collector. Witman has developed a name for selling Zook artwork, and the market clearly has strength. The late Abner Zook (19212010) was from Newmanstown, Pa. His twin brother, Aaron, also created elaborate three-dimensional

Sculptural Meteorites Defy Gravity At Christie’s 70-Pound Meteorite From Meteor Crater, Arizona, Fetches A Record $237,500 Science and natural history are growing categories in the marketplace. Meteorite prices skyrocketed at Christie’s recent online sale, “Deep Impact: Martian, Lunar and Other Rare Meteorites,” held from Feb. 7 to 14. Of the 44 lots available, 82 percent of the lots sold, and more than a dozen sold for more than their high estimate. The star of the sale was a meteorite from Meteor Crater, Ariz. Nearly 50,000 years ago it was part of a small asteroid that plowed into the Arizona desert with the force of more than 100 atomic bombs, creating the most famous and bestpreserved meteorite crater on Earth. Evocative of a Henry Moore sculpture, this 70-pound meteorite from the Macovich collection was estimated to sell for $150,000$250,000, and sold for $237,500. “While the world’s fascination with meteorites is roaring, the market for sculptural iron meteorites has exploded, and rightly so. Less than two percent of all meteorites are of the iron variety, and less than five percent of those are aesthetic and deservedly regarded as natural sculpture from outer space,” said

Macovich curator Darryl Pitt. Estimated to sell for $10,000$15,000, an unusual, highly textured iron meteorite from Russia, whose appearance has more in common with a monolithic modern sculpture than a meteorite, went for $81,250. A captivating three-pound totemlike iron meteorite estimated to sell for $1,000-$1,500 sold for $10,625. A half-pound specimen of the planet Mars sold for $47,500, and, not to be outdone, a meteorite with extraterrestrial gemstones estimated at $1,200-$1,800 went for $5,250. The future of meteorites is bright. “The meteorite market is in its nascent stage,” said Pitt. “Highly aesthetic meteorites are penetrating the art market and will soon be selling for an order of magnitude more than what was seen today.” To learn more, readers may visit www.christies.com.

Antiques & Auction News — March 16, 2018 - - 3
By Shawn Surmick Collectibles author Harry Rinker is credited with once stating that for the first 30 years of anything’s life, all its value is speculative. Love it or loathe it, speculation is always in the background (and sometimes the forefront) of the antiques and collectibles trade. And while today’s speculators are no longer chasing after the Beanie Babies of yesterday or tomorrow’s valuable comic book, there are some areas of the trade that are much more susceptible to speculation than others. This all begs the question as to whether or not speculation can actually work in the short term? While I do not personally support the practice of speculation, I can identify several collecting categories where chance can favor the prepared buyer. Below are my picks for some popular collecting categories where well-versed buyers can succeed at both short-term or long-term speculation, assuming luck, knowledge, and a little patience are on their side. It should go without saying that would-be speculators are strongly urged to heed caution before attempting to enter any of these markets, and I make no guarantees on your results or outcome. 5. Vintage and modern
original movie posters Movie posters have long been collectible but have taken a backseat to other ephemera-based collectibles that are easily third-party graded. Comic books, currency, and stamps have soared to record heights as a result of third-party grading, while only the rarest vintage movies posters have done the same. This is causing some well-versed collectors to conclude that vintage and even modern movie posters are undervalued. Advice to novice collectors and investors: The 1980s and 1990s is the sweet spot here. Look for original posters in very fine to near mint or better condition and work on spotting trends. New releases or updates of vintage films can cause the original movie posters to jump in value and demand, but watch out for high-quality reprints. 4. Vintage and modern video game advertising Vintage advertising is still all the rage, and while soda advertising has captured the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of Baby Boomers and Gen-Xer’s alike, it is vintage and modern video game advertising that has millennials abuzz. Vintage advertising from the 1980s featuring Nintendo games and systems has been setting internet auction sites on fire. This trend is expected to increase exponentially as most vintage
video game advertising from the 1980s and 1990s is being hoarded by hardcore collectors and speculators alike. Will middle-age millennials seek out vintage Nintendo advertising the same way older generations bid up vintage Coca-Cola advertising? The consensus says yes, but collectors need to use caution. A lot of fantasy and fake pieces are readily sold on the market, and buyers have little recourse when buying from unknown sources. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Better to buy what you know is authentic than assume. The real value is in pre-2000 Nintendo advertising. 3. Action figures and toys Toys have long been speculated on, and the modern internet era is no different. From Nintendo Amiibo figurines, to limited-edition Lego sets, to high-end action figure collectibles geared towards adults, most mass-produced action figures that grace your local toy aisle will never be worth much. The money is in limited higher-end articulated action figures and prop replicas geared toward the adult market. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Be very careful when speculating on modern, mass-produced toys. This isn’t the 1970s and ’80s anymore. Most toy lines based on movie properties grace the shelves for a few months and are quickly forgotten. Modern action figures based on “Star
Wars” and geared towards children will not have the value that the original vintage line had. You can buy almost any post-1995 “Star Wars” action figure today for almost as much as when they were first produced. 2. Modern vinyl records Vinyl records are back and are the audiophile’s choice of media. Millennials have embraced the trend, and independent record stores are starting to make a comeback. Believe it or not, this market is quite promising. Many mint-condition vinyl record albums that were produced post-2010 have seen increases in value multiple times their original purchase price. Music enthusiasts, myself included, prefer the sound of vinyl to that of a digital file or even a compact disc. Advice to novice collectors and speculators: Much like the rise of video game collecting, a speculative bubble has already appeared in this market. Go after artists who have a cult-like following but are not yet mainstream. These are the works that will most likely be sought after years from now. If looking for a true longterm investment, go after vintage records in excellent to near mint condition that have mass appeal. 1. Vintage reserved list “Magic: The Gathering” cards in high grade “Magic: The Gathering” is becoming a hot collectible thanks to the controversial

change and can cause the value of even the most coveted cards to fall. And there you have it. My top five favorite speculative bets. Again, no one can guarantee what the market will do in any of these categories, and caution is key for buyers, but these are the markets poised for the most growth, in my opinion, if current trends are any indicator.

reserved list, which is a listing of hundreds of cards that the company has vowed to never print again. With the advent of third-party grading via PSA and BGS, prices are soaring, and demand is increasing on some of the hottest earliest cards. This market has legs. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Bite the bullet and buy high-grade, soughtafter cards. Focus on the original Alpha/Beta cards or go after early rare cards from sets like Arabian Nights, Antiquities, and Legends. Avoid newer, post-reserved list sets. Again, avoid the newer, mass-produced stuff, as print runs have increased exponentially, but also know that tastes can just as easily

Figures from WWII, including Hitler, Mussolini, Goebbels, and Goering, are represented. Other important wartime toy material includes trenches, bomb blasts, warships, fighter planes, tanks, flamethrowers, howitzers and battery-operated search lights. A considerable number of lots also include the original boxes. To follow in the sale is a diverse selection of other toys, both European and American, including a number of Märklin toys in exceptional condition, an Electric Tramway trolley, a train station and a doubleglobe street lamp from the Owl’s Tale Shop Christmas Window Collection from Haddonfield, N.J. Also from the Owl’s Tale collection is a oneof-a-kind cast-iron and tin Ferris Wheel clockwork bank (est. $2,000-$3,000). An exciting last-minute addition to the sale is a scarce Märklin painted tin clockwork musical carousel, ca. 1910, with clockwork movement and retaining the original cloth canopy with fringed tassel border (est. $30,000-$40,000). The auction continues with other whimsical toys to delight bidders, including a collection of sleighs, toboggans, wagons, pull toys, tricycles and handpainted sleds. Highlights include a hand-propelled, carved and painted horse velocipede, ca. 1870 (est. $2,000-$3,000), as well as a large hobby horse selection. Additional exciting and nostalgic playtime essentials include a variety of painted figures

On Feb. 2, 3, and 4 in Memorial Hall East on the York Fairgrounds in York, Pa., Melvin Arion held his 170th edition of the Semiannual Original York Antiques Show and Sale. The 96-exhibitor roster had seven fill-in dealers, due to illness, sadly, not of the cold or flu variety. According to Arion, several serious injuries and health setbacks kept seven dealers who are regularly there from doing the show. Luckily, weather cooperated throughout the weekend, although Sunday afternoon when the show ended, it rained and temperatures dropped, making pack out challenging. Attendance was good, especially Friday and Saturday, fueled in part by cabin fever and the show’s quality offerings. The last day,
was a bit soft. A stronger than average amount of business was reported as well, indictating health in the marketplace. The Original York show is easily amongst the best antiques shows in the MidAtlantic. The variety of formal and country Americana at all price levels is hard to beat. Arion does his part to keep the variety strong and no show manager invests more advertising dollars into a show. The show has television and radio spots through Comcast cable and regional National Public Radio stations. Arion also uses every trade publication there is. “I spend $60,000 on advertising and marketing, stated Arion. Pennsylvania material is a focus for many of the exhibiting dealers. There were some very good Pennsylvania German textiles and fraktur

Philadelphia Antiques And Art Show To Present Art And Design Through The Centuries The April 20 To 22 Show Now Benefits The Philadelphia Museum Of Art Along With Penn Medicine For three days this spring, Philadelphians and visitors to the city can explore exceptional works of art and design spanning four centuries at the 56th Philadelphia Antiques and Art Show. Tickets are now on sale for the show, which will be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 20, 21, and 22, at The Navy Yard, with a Preview Party on Thursday, April 19. Sixty of the nation’s most distinguished dealers will showcase some of the finest examples of 17th-century through 20th-century furniture, paintings, jewelry, crafts, silver, textiles, porcelain, and other works. The dealers, as well as guides and longtime show volunteers, will share stories of the objects through lectures, panel discussions and tours, enhancing the show experience for all guests. Proceeds from the event jointly benefit the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Penn Medicine. New this year, the work of Philadelphia furniture makers and fine and decorative artists, as well as porcelain and silver items, will take center stage in
a special loan exhibit, “Philadelphia Collects Philadelphia.” Featuring works from the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection, the special exhibit promises to offer a stimulating dialogue between historical and contemporary perspectives. “The Philadelphia Antiques and Art Show has long been regarded as one of the best of its kind in the country, and we are expanding the offerings in 2018 to accommodate new and broadening audiences,” said Anne Hamilton, 2018 co-chair. “Our guests can expect to see more 20th century furniture and pottery and contemporary art, as well as many objects exhibited in public for the first time,” said Hamilton. “Through the show and the loan exhibit, visitors will experience timeless great design,” said Karen DiSaia, show manager. “Colonial-era pieces will be presented alongside midcentury ones, and you will be able to see the connections between the two,” said DiSaia. “We want people to come and enjoy the journey through time
that the show offers. As they interact with some of the most informed art and antiques experts in the nation, they can expect it to be engaging, informative, and fun,” said DiSaia. The Philadelphia Antiques and Art Show is open to the public. Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 20, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 21, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 22. General admission will be $20 per person online or at the door ($15 online through March 15) and includes access to the regular programming, with discounts available for students, seniors and groups. The preview party will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 19. Tickets are $300 ($150 tax deductible) or $150 for young collectors. A 5 p.m. entrance ticket will be available for $600 ($450 tax deductible). The Philadelphia Antiques Show was founded in 1966 to support the work of Penn Medicine, and this year’s association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art marks the beginning of a new era for an
historic tradition. The two institutions are joint beneficiaries of the show in 2018, and through this partnership the museum will gradually assume full responsibility for the show’s organization and management

Roosevelt House Acquires Arthur Schlesinger Jr. Collection Of Books On Presidential History Gift Was Announced On FDR’S 136th Birthday A trove of 65 books on American political history, covering the presidency from the age of John Quincy Adams to the era of Bill Clinton, with a special emphasis on Franklin Delano Roosevelt, has been donated to Hunter College’s Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute by Alexandra Schlesinger, widow of the late historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Professor Schlesinger collected the volumes personally during his long career as a revered scholar, acclaimed writer, and influential White House advisor. The books, most of them personally inscribed to Schlesinger by their authors, will become part of the holdings at the Roosevelt House library, which occupies the original second-floor room that FDR used as a study and office during his residence at the East 65th Street town house from 1908 through his departure for his own presidential inauguration in March of 1933. “This is a wonderful gift that enriches the Roosevelt House collection and will surely benefit scholars who come here to conduct research in the house that Franklin and Eleanor used as their New York City base from the earliest days of their marriage until the beginning of his presidency,” commented Jennifer J. Raab, Hunter College president. “We are deeply grateful to Mrs. Schlesinger for choosing Roosevelt House as the repository for this generous gift. And we extend special thanks to our own Roosevelt House advisory board member, Ambassador William vanden Heuvel, for helping to arrange the donation. “FDR loved reading history, and it is so fitting that these books, authored by a virtual who’s who of 20th-century historians and amassed by no less than the historian of the century, can now be housed here at Roosevelt House,” said Raab. “It is the poetry of history that part of Arthur Schlesinger’s book collection should now be situated at Roosevelt House and in the very library that FDR himself once used. Now, the pre-eminent historian of the Roosevelt era has found a perfect spot for his treasured collection of books,” said Ambassador vanden Heuvel. The announcement of the gift was made on the evening of the 136th anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birth at a Roosevelt House public
program devoted to a new biography of the historian, “Schlesinger: The Imperial Historian,” written by Richard Aldous. Harold Holzer, the Jonathan F. Fanton director of Roosevelt House, introduced the event by noting: “Today we add to our collection not only a new book illuminating the life of Arthur Schlesinger himself, but also some of the very books the great historian welcomed into his own collection during his extraordinary career. Roosevelt House has long served as a convening place for students, scholars, and the public, so it is an honor for us to make this trove of books part of our collection, as well as a constant reminder of how much policy work, history, and scholarship this house and its occupants have inspired and interpreted,” said Holzer. The books, by authors from Jonathan Alter to Tom Wicker, include several volumes on the family and presidency of John

Schlesinger library for the Roosevelt House Library, including books about the presidency, successful and unsuccessful candidates, as well as the writings of Schlesinger on the presidency and other aspects of American history. the life of this country”), the collection includes the following: Frank Friedel’s 1973 “Franklin D. Roosevelt: Launching the New Deal” (“To Arthur Schlesinger, who has sustained us all in his shadow, with admiration and affection, Frank) and the monumental biographies by James MacGregor Burns, the 1956
Here is an inscription by historian James MacGregor Burns (1918-2014) in his first volume about FDR, “Roosevelt: the Lion and the Fox” (1956). The second volume, “Roosevelt: the Soldier of Freedom, 1940-45,” (1970) won the Pulitzer Prize. MacGregor is alluding to Arthur Schlesinger’s forthcoming first volume of the trilogy titled “The Age of Roosevelt,” which was published in 1957.
Hodgson, and Arthur S. Link), as well as an original treatise by Wilson himself, “Congressional Government: A Study in American Politics,” 1901. One of the oldest volumes is a printed eulogy, “Life and Public Services of John Quincy Adams,” Sixth President of the United States, delivered in 1848 by former New York Governor (later U. S. Senator, presidential aspirant, and Secretary of State) William H. Seward. Another rarity is the biography “Martin Van Buren to the End of his Career” (1889) by George Bancroft, considered by many the first great American historian. The collection includes a remarkable number of books by and about unsuccessful candidates for the U.S. presidency: a memoir by James G. Blaine (who lost to Grover Cleveland in 1884); Emily Smith Warner’s 1956 volume, “The
Happy Warrior: A Biography of my Father Alfred E. Smith,” the New York Democrat who lost to Herbert Hoover in 1928; Jane Dick’s 1952 book, “WhistleStopping With Adlai [Stevenson],” defeated by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956; Richard Michael Marano’s “Vote Your Conscience: The Last Campaign of George McGovern,” as well as McGovern’s own 1968 book, “A Time of War. A Time of Peace” (inscribed: “To Arthur-with always growing esteem and friendship-George”); and Douglas Brinkley’s book, “Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War” (Kerry was defeated by George W. Bush in 2004). Perhaps the most extraordinary volume within this category is Donald R. McKoy’s “Landon of Kansas,” a 1966 biography of Kansas Republican Alfred M. Landon, whom FDR resoundingly defeated for the presidency in 1936. Books by other political figures include one-time Democratic vice presidential candidate Thomas Eagleton’s 1974 “War and Presidential Power” (“To Arthur Schlesinger-one of the nation’s fine minds and a fine guy as well) and the 1984 “Preserving the Constitution: The Autobiography of Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr.” (“To Arthur M. Schlesinger-the gifted historian, for his gracious permission to quote in this book his excellent treatise, “The Imperial Presidency”). The Roosevelt House Library already includes six
volumes on presidential history by Schlesinger, to which the new acquisitions will now be added. Many more Schlesinger books can be found in the main Hunter College Library. Roosevelt House, an integral part of Hunter College since 1943, re-opened in 2010 as a public policy institute honoring the distinguished legacies of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Its mission is threefold: to educate students in public policy and human rights, to support faculty research, and to foster creative dialogue and civic engagement. Roosevelt House also offers tours and exhibits that bring the history of the Roosevelts to a wide audience. Hunter College, located in the heart of Manhattan, is the largest senior college in the City University of New York (CUNY). Founded in 1870, it is also one of the oldest public colleges in the country. More than 23,000 students currently attend Hunter, pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 170 areas of study. Hunter’s student body is as diverse as New York City itself. For more than 140 years, Hunter has provided educational opportunities for women and minorities, and today, students from every walk of life and every corner of the world attend Hunter. In addition to offering a multitude of academic programs in its prestigious School of Arts and Sciences, Hunter offers a wide breadth of programs in its preeminent Schools of Education, Nursing, Social Work, Health Professions and Urban Public Health.

F. Kennedy, in whose administration Schlesinger served as a special advisor and so-called “court historian” from 1961 to 1963. These include JFK works by Lord Longford, William Manchester, and Herbert S. Parmet, a volume on Ted Kennedy by James MacGregor Burns, and “On His Own: Robert F. Kennedy, 1964-1968,” co-authored and inscribed by William vanden Heuvel. The Roosevelt era is particularly well-covered. MESDA Design Seminar, “A Place To Call Home,” To Take Place May 5 Old Salem To Host Special Daylong Exploration Of Interior, Architectural, Garden, And Landscape Design audience. Architect Gil Schafer believes the most successful houses are the ones that celebrate living, houses with timeless charm that are imbued with memory and a distinct sense of place. It’s this dialogue between past and present that
enables him to interpret traditional principles for a multiplicity of architectural styles within contemporary ways of living. Schafer will open the doors to his world of comfortable classicism and share some of the firm’s most recent, and exciting, projects from around the country. He will walk through the inner workings of his distinctive approach, from concrete techniques to the more emotional and intuitive aspects of his process, showing how he brings his projects to life and fills them with soul. James Carter is known for his unique approach to beautiful, confident, and visionary residential architecture. The work of his firm, James F. Carter, Architect, is nationally recognized, admired by his peers as “clever in a subtle way,” and beloved by his
clients throughout the southern, mid-Atlantic, and New England regions. Originally from Monroeville, Ala., Carter excels in sophisticated ease, and his designs exude decorum and comfort. The term “new old house” is frequently applied to his work, and nothing delights him more when people can’t tell what is new and what’s old. “Houses that are old connote tradition, charm, and history, but what’s fun for me is to create homes that are new imbued with everything that is loved about old houses. The basic concepts we adhere to are truly straightforward: classical principles, easy grace, and details, details, details.” “A Place to Call Home” includes a catered luncheon. Patron ticket holders will be treated to a speaker’s cocktail reception and preferred seating in the lecture venue. Space is limited, and preregistration is required to ensure a place. The cost is $150 per person for general registration and $250 for patron registration. Interested individuals can register online at www.mesda.org or by calling 336-721-7369. Discovering a Bradscar in mint or near-mint condition is now a model vehicle collecting equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack. Bradscars are rare models of four British saloons from the early 1950s in approximately 1/76 scale. Three were diecast in lead, and one was a plastic molding. They were manufactured in England by Bradshaw Model Products Ltd. of Hove, on the southern coast, near Brighton. Their target audience was originally
A Riley 1.5 RMA was the next Bradscar, issued in 1952. This 61mm lead model receives unfavourable comparison with the larger Dinky version - no. 40a, renumbered as no. 158 in 1954 - because of the heavy appearance of the radiator grill. Some Bradscars Rileys went on sale with Morris Six bases fitted and with a body painted in a light green shade similar to that of the Dinky model. An Austin A30 four-door sedan was the last of the lead Bradscars, going into production circa 1953. This model differed from the Morris and Riley because the base was lead. By Anita Stratos In a previous column, we talked about how to recognize the difference between reproduction match safes and authentic vintage or antique safes of various materials. Now let’s chat about how to spot reproduction sterling silver match safes, continuing my conversation with George Sparacio, board member and co-founder of the International Match Safe Association and collector of match safes for over 30 years. When examining a sterling safe, the hallmarks will tell you plenty. Hallmarks include a date mark, so you need to know or look up the date mark you see on the piece (there are lots of online resources) to decipher it. If you see heavy rubbing or scratching on the hallmark area, especially if it doesn’t look natural or match the wear on the rest of the piece, you can be pretty sure someone tried to obliterate a modern hallmark. If you see the familiar “925”
sterling designation stamped into the piece by itself, without any other mark, it was probably made sometime in the 1970s or later, after it was approved by the European Community. This now universal mark was generally not used alone in earlier years, though it may have appeared with additional markings, like a maker’s mark. Because there can be exceptions, the mark is a starting point for recognizing repros, but more must be examined along with it. One mark that definitely distinguishes a modern match safe is the DAB maker’s mark. This manufacturer produced high-quality match safes from the 1970s through the early 2000s with no intent to deceive buyers. The company included the required English hallmarks on its safes with a
year mark that indicates the modern date of manufacture. This illustrates the importance of reading hallmarks; even though DAB marked their safes honestly, resellers may still misrepresent the safe as vintage or antique, either because they haven’t checked the date mark or to intentionally deceive buyers who assume hallmarks indicate an old piece. Several other makers’ marks also indicate a reproduction: CME, BAC, MS, PJM and G, GJ, or either of those within or alongside a diamond shape, along with the 925 mark. Doing an acid test on the metal for confirmation that the piece is sterling won’t help determine authenticity, many of these reproductions have the correct .925 silver content. Some reproductions are believed to be made in Thailand, and the vast majority are being sold in England (some possibly made in England); in fact, many of the reproductions originally sold in England were correctly priced as reproductions. It is generally resellers who misrepresent the age and value of these pieces, either mistakenly or deliberately. However, Sparacio warns that according to his estimates, 80 to 85 percent of reproductions being misrepresented as originals or deliberately eliminating age information are being sold online from England. Match safes by major luxury brands like Gorham and Tiffany are also being reproduced. This isn’t surprising when you realize that the authentic originals can sell in the high hundreds to over a thousand dollars. One example is a 19th-century Gorham golf-themed sterling match safe reproduced with the marks 925, Sterling, and GJ inside a diamond, whereas the original would bear the Gorham Mfg. Co. name, as do all of their items. Not only
wouldn’t lose more than a tiny amount of space to an insert. Special thanks to George Sparacio for information and images courtesy International Match Safe Association. would the new marks be an immediate giveaway, the modern safe is also smaller; it measures 1.75 inches tall as opposed to its original counterpart, which is 2.5 inches tall. Unfortunately, the details of the male golfer and flourishes are relatively good on this particular safe. The original Gorham match safe is valued at approximately $800$1,000, while the reproduction is sold for $12-$18, making it easy to see why unscrupulous sellers would try to pass off a reproduction as an original. On the other hand, a reproduced sterling Gorham female tennis player match safe with the same contemporary GJ mark has extremely poor details. Among other things, the face is so poorly done as to be cartoonish. Similarly, a reproduced safe depicting a female golfer also suffers in the detail work and shows a face with bulging eyes. On all of these GJ safes, the strike plate has no wear and is very defined. Forgeries of Wallace, Unger and Tiffany match safes are also common, some of which are well crafted. Sparacio recommends comparing the marks of any such safe you are considering buying with the marks of a known authentic piece. A Tiffany mark, for example, would also have a pattern and order number on their safe, whereas the forgeries typically eliminate these two numbers. Also, the majority of marks on old sterling safes were hand-stamped with
to them in contemporary times in order to increase their prices. Some of these are modern plaques made in China, and others are old pieces taken from jewelry. Since the English hallmarks on the safes themselves are correct, buyers just assume the entire piece is authentic, but don’t be fooled. Check to see if the theme of the plaque makes sense with any design work on the safe, and make sure the plaque isn’t too big, too small, or too thick for the spot it’s in. Sparacio cited an example of a match safe with a compass that was so thick, it protruded into the safe, taking up space that would have been used for matches. Again, this wouldn’t make sense, since old match safes were utilitarian and

punches unless there were a lot of them or large-sized marks, in which case they may have been applied by machine press. In fact, silverplate safe marks were mostly applied by machine press in order to imprint into the strong metal underneath the plating. These techniques of hand stamping and machine pressing are time-consuming and require specialized equipment, so forged safe marks are generally molded into the piece. The placement of the mark is another clue to authenticity. Most of the time, you’ll find marks on vintage and antique match safes obscured from view when the safe is closed - open the lid and look on the bezel protruding from the body of the safe. While a few reproductions might follow this marking method, most will appear elsewhere on the safe. The way the safe is manufactured can also tell you a lot. Newer pieces may be heavier and thicker than originals because the modern safes are usually cast rather than diestamped. You may also see more obvious seams or grinding marks on a repro where an attempt was made to lessen the appearance of the seams. Alternatively, the seams on originals were hand-finished and not obvious. Additionally, look for a thicker spring bar - vintage spring bars are generally about 1/16 inch thick or under. Sparacio has recently seen an influx of authentic old sterling match safes of lower value that have had plaques applied
