Carl Snavely: Folk Carver Of Lititz

By Karl Pass Carl D. Snavely (1915-1983) was a talented woodcarver from Lititz, Pa., and went by the nickname “Stump.” By profession, Snavely was a shipping clerk at the Badorf Shoe Company. Founded in 1928, today the company is no longer in Lititz, and operates in Manheim. Snavely and his wife, Florence, were also active in the antiques business and set up at local shows. The couple lived on Willow Street near the Linden Hall school and had two children: a son, Jack, and daughter, Caroll. The talented carver was active with the Lancaster County Wood Carvers, a group which remains active today. Much of Snavely’s work was done with fine gouges and knives, exhibiting highly intricate detail. According to the Snavelys’ son, Jack, among his father’s first carvings was a gazelle, done circa 1945. The spread-wing eagle was his signature work and typically done with extremely fine detail. The eagle ranked among his favorite subjects to carve, also according to his son. Snavely carved a variety of subjects, such as roosters, owls, “goony” birds, and squirrels. He also did relief-carved motifs inside large wooden bowls, such as distelfinks, tulips and hearts. Another type of work he did were small pinback wooden carved brooches and

Among the only published references to include Snavely’s work is Richard and Rosemarie Machmer’s book “Just for Nice,” published 26 years ago. An accompanying exhibit for the book was done at the then Historical Society of Berks County. In an interview on March 10, 1995, Carl’s wife, Florence Snavely (1912-2001), told Clarence Spohn that Carl did not paint his work; instead, he had fellow antiques dealer David Ellinger paint his carvings. Painter and dealer Ellinger (1913-2003) is largely remembered for his Pennsylvania-German stylizied artwork and painted on a very profilic scale. Early in his career, he was involved with the WPA. In the 1940s, he got to know Dr. Albert Barnes, who bought his work for his country house, Ker-Feal in Chester County, Pa. “I helped the Snavely family on two occasions prepare for a sale, and it was during the first sale, she (Florence) told me that Carl never painted his carvings and that he had David Ellinger paint them,” said Spohn. An important, large-sized, double-sided stoneware face pitcher attributed to Elisha Hyssong, Cassville, Huntingdon County, Pa., circa 1850, will be sold at Crocker Farm. The auction will take place on Saturday, March 25, at their facility in Sparks, Md. The large four-and-a-half gallon size is the only face vessel known to the Zipp family of Crocker Farm with two faces and two spouts. “I’ve never seen another doublesided one,” commented Tony Zipp. Although restored, the two large applied handles at the sides are also unusual. The pitcher’s faces are done in the style of Remmey family

face vessels. Hyssong’s distinctive floral decoration on the pitcher was likely inspired by Huntingdon, Pa., potter Henry Glazier. Hyssong began his potting career as an apprentice in Waynesboro, Pa., later marrying a Huntingdon County native and running a pottery operation in Cassville in 1847. The facial features exhibit a high level of refinement in their modeling. Along with its overall size, and the fact it is doublesided, rank the piece as an important work. “It came from an older collection, purchased over 30 years ago,” said Zipp. To learn more, readers may call 410-472-2016 or visit www.crockerfarm.com.

A noted collector who knew Carl and Florence was Dr. Robert Kline. “I once traded a yellow spatter china rose pattern plate and a peafowl pattern blue border spatterware platter to Carl for two of his eagles,” said Kline. The platter had come from a Parke-Bernet (now Sotheby’s) sale. Snavely’s work has a rather large, although regional collecting audience, and the market is strong for his work. At the Richard and Rosmarie Machmer auction in 2008 through Pook & Pook, a pair of Schimmel-style paintdecorated roosters cataloged

memorabilia, particularly books. He had more than 500 period books. These included about 130 unit histories, rare volumes providing details of specific military divisions, regiments, and battalions. He must have had one of the best private collections of unit histories in the country. The collection grew too large, and at last, Dad gave it a fond farewell. He entrusted me to sell it. I’d done plenty of buying and selling, but had never handled a collection such as this - not even close. After mulling over several options, I arranged to consign with a large auction company in central Pennsylvania. They would sell it at an upcoming militaria auction. Everything sounded great, and Dad and I sat back and hoped for the best. When the day of the auction arrived, though, something seemed amiss. The unit histories, which we’d considered the gem of the

We hoped for some sort of dramatic twist of fate - the kind you read about in the happier stories - but it never came. The box lots of books appeared at the front of the auction like cars in some monotonous train, each selling quickly for low bids. I cringed to think of the many thousands of dollars of material selling for a few hundred, not to mention the pride of my dad’s collection going out with such a whimper. On the plus side, the items that were not books (uniforms, equipment, medals, and so on) exceeded our expectations. But I couldn’t stop wondering what had gone wrong with the books. After some reflecting, I have a few clues. First, I should have done

more research. I knew that many unit histories routinely sell online for about $35 to $75 each. I didn’t check how they sold at live auctions. Experience should have told me they would not sell nearly as well. The market for unit histories, and rare books in general, is quite limited and specific. I think some specialized buyers are easier to reach online, as opposed to through physical live auctions. Second, instead of making plans to divide the collection and sell in different venues, I just handed it all over and hoped for the best. One lump sum. One size fits all. I didn’t stop to think that maybe a militaria auction wasn’t the best choice for everything. Maybe the in-house military experts weren’t book experts? Maybe the military buyers weren’t book buyers? Maybe book buyers wouldn’t bother looking at a military auction? Third, I should have communicated better. I should have talked with the auctioneers beforehand to ensure we were on the same page. I should have asked about how the estimates were determined, how the items would be grouped, and how the auction would be advertised. That might have made me seem nosy, but it is a business transaction, after all, and I’m a partner in it. Better research, planning, and communication could have made the sale into a success story for the headlines. It wasn’t, but at least I learned some lessons. My credo is, “You can’t cry at the auction.” Selling at auction is committing to the result, good or bad, and an element of that has to do with both market conditions and also chance. But there’s no doubt that setting up a sale in the smartest way can increase your chances of success tremendously.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Collecting Vintage Computer Games Of The 1980s Some of the fondest memories of my youth center around the fun experiences I had with my first computer. Looking back, I can still remember the day I got it. I was 10 years old, and my parents took me to Hess’s flagship department store, located in the heart of Allentown, Pa. It was there where I was told they would be buying me an Apple IIc home computer. The reason that particular machine was chosen was due to the fact that the school district I attended at the time used Apple computers in its classrooms and learning centers. Truth be told, I had very little intention of doing any kind of school work on that machine. I wanted the computer due to the complexity and variety of computer games that could be played on it. At that point in time, in order to play some of the most graphically involved games, you had to have a personal computer instead of just a home video game console. Some of those computer games looked incredible in the advertisements that graced the pages of my favorite video game magazines of the time. In the 1980s, would-be computer owners had a plethora of options from which to choose. Casual computer owners could simply

This brings us to the question of value. Computer game collectors are in the minority in an age where home video game collecting is all the rage. Most of the early and highly sought-after computer games were made by companies such as Electronic Arts and Interplay - companies that still exist today and are quite successful. A lot of the most popular computer games of the day were very intricate pieces of art that came packaged in over-sized boxes and easily lost pieces like cloth maps and metallic tokens that brought the game to life. This is why finding working and complete vintage computer games from this era can be quite challenging. Some of the most popular games are based on either early text-based adventure games that have little to no on-screen graphics or beautifully crafted graphical powerhouses of their day that were set in a mythical world

system, Apple would face tough competition, while the PC would enjoy ongoing market dominance to this very day. Today, with all the media attention being paid to classic video games and high value Nintendo games, classic computer games that came packaged on 5.25 inch floppy disks are often forgotten. Ironically, it is much harder to find complete and near-mint computer games from the 1980s than it is to find classic home video games from this era. This is because while a mass-market Nintendo game could sell upwards of several million units, the average computer game would be considered a mass-market success by selling just a few hundred thousand units. Most computer owners at the time did not purchase a computer for the sole purpose of playing games, and sales figures further supported this. As a result, a tremendous amount of classic and highly soughtafter computer games were released during this time. Unfortunately, the amount of classic video game collectors far outweighs the amount of classic computer game collectors. As such, some of the most incredible computer games released in the 1980s can be had for a fraction of the cost of some rare video games. Speculators be damned.

in their original boxes. This type of collecting is a very niche market because most of these games are easily emulated on modern day home video game consoles and play so much better in modern form. As such, a lot of these earlier translations are left forgotten in the tales told by nostalgia-filled enthusiasts who remember gaming on a computer rather than a home video game console. Collectors looking to get into classic computer game collecting need to understand that this is not a market for speculation or financial investment. The generation of enthusiasts who grew up loving some of these titles and seeks to collect them has already acquired them or has no desire to do so. Still, I am always drawn to seeing vast collections of mint and complete computer games from this era. In an upcoming article, I plan to look at another niche trend that has developed in recent years - collecting computer games from the 1990s. Until that time, for those of you who, like me, still remember classic games like “The Bard’s Tale,” this one’s for you. Game on!

choose one of the many Atari home computers that were popular thanks in part to the rise of the Atari 2600 video game system. Meanwhile, Atari competitor Commodore would hit massive success with its line of Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 machines. More dedicated computer enthusiasts would opt for an IBM DOS-based machine or one of the Apple computers that my parents chose to buy for me because most school systems used Apple at that time. By the time the 1990s would arrive, home video game consoles would wrestle massive amounts of market share away from home computers and become the number one way to play some of the hottest games. Meanwhile, both Atari and Commodore would face severe financial woes and exit their respected computer markets in tandem. Apple would be left as a mere shell of its former self thanks to the board of directors’ infamous decision to replace famed rock star CEO Steve Jobs with businessman John Sculley. This decision would leave Steve Jobs returning to the helm a little more than a decade later and outing Sculley with the praise and full support of the computer company he founded. Unfortunately, thanks to the rise of Microsoft and the success of the Windows operating

containing complex role playing elements. Collectors of this era readily look for mint and complete copies of games from the ever popular Ultima series, “The Bard’s Tale” series of games, and the classic “Zork” series of games. Even in near-mint and complete condition, most of these titles will sell for about $30 to $80 each on auction sites like eBay. Some exceptions do sell for the few hundreds, but those are exceptions and not the rule. Ironically, even though a lot of these titles can easily be considered somewhat rare and very hard to find, few will ever sell above their original retail price from when they were first released. Most of these games are a textbook example as to why something considered “rare” does not always have a lot of monetary value (speculators, take note). Outside of the many hardcore Dungeon and Dragon-like role playing games made for early computers, enthusiasts are also seeking out popular home versions of some of their favorite arcade games of the time. Sadly, most of these are only worth a few dollars each, with some obscure titles selling for $30 or more, complete

Premier Automobilia And Petroliana Sale Hits The Road On March 25 Auction To Feature Over 125 Lots Of Merchandise From The Gilmore Oil Company Morphy Auctions is excited to announce a 650-plus lot sale to be held on Saturday, March 25, starting at noon. All items from this event are on display in Morphy’s Las Vegas, Nev., auction gallery and are available for preview now. It’s all in the service with this sale’s collection of vintage advertising signage from Gilmore gasoline stations. A pair of highlights in this category are worthy of a salute. Both come with an original Gilmore flag and are considered the “holy grail” of Gilmore advertising. These signs were placed at the top of stations to grab attention and were very effective in doing so. They are estimated at $15,000-$20,000 and $10,000-$15,000, respectively. Lot 163, a Gilmore Blu-Green masonite sign, is estimated at $5,000-$7,500. York Show Provides Relief From Winter Blues Dealers Report Good Business At Popular Semiannual Show By Karl Pass “It was tremoundous,” stated Melvin “Butch” Arion following his Original 168th Semiannual York Antiques Show and Sale, held Feb. 3 to 5 in Memorial Hall East on the York Fairgrounds in York, Pa. “I’m very thankful and pleased,” continued Arion. A lot of business was conducted at the three-day show, and attendance both Friday and Saturday was good. The weather cooperated the duration of the weekend, which immensely helped both exhibiting dealers and traveling showgoers. More than the normal amount of replacements were needed at the show due to illness. One first-time exhibiting dealer was southern

marketplace. The full-time dealers who are forced to follow the market and price material to sell in order to be relevant and make expenses, did so. This is also a high quality show for ceramics enthusiasts; whether Staffordshire china, Delft, mochaware, or Pennsylvania redware, the Arion show had it. Unlike some large shows today, where one-third of the dealers do well, one-third okay, and one-third poorly, the vast majority of dealers were not complaining about the amount of sales or energy of the crowd. One dealer who did have a strong show was Florida dealer Michael Wittemore. “I sold my cow weathervane, eight trade signs, five pieces of furniture, four pieces of stoneware, a portrait of a girl, and smalls,” said the dealer. There remains an interest in both

For those in the MidAtlantic region who didn’t make it the winter edition of this major show, they should mark their calendars for the fall version. It will take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 22, 23, and 24. single determining factor as to age. Also, the questionable sulphide marbles discussed above have rougher pontils that are opaque and have straight, even lines like brush strokes, whereas pontils on antique marbles are smooth and clear. Because bags of marbles in their original packaging can be very attractive to cross-genre collectors, some forgers are even producing new labels and packaging. While some of these are reproduced, most are fantasy labels that never existed. These can feature subjects like old-time celebrities, black memorabilia, cartoon characters and a wide range of other subjects, thus appealing to a market of collectors who are not as much interested in the marbles as they are in the label with the subject they collect. One way to easily recognize a new paper label is by its colors original vintage labels only had one or two colors, so if you see more than that, it’s probably modern. Plastic bags that look bright and new probably are new. Older bags are usually somewhat cloudy from age. A little common sense can also go a long way - a Mid-Century plastic bag with a label featuring a character or personality from an earlier time period doesn’t make sense. Earlier bags were usually mesh, not plastic. Generally speaking, any part of the packaging, whether it’s construction, material, or label issues (including misspellings and ragged letter edges), that isn’t in sync with its purported time period is a poorly crafted modern attempt to fool unsuspecting buyers.

Aggies, shooters, mibs, ducks - if you recognize these terms, you’re probably either a marble collector or enjoyed playing marble games as a child. Marbles have been around since ancient times and have been found in such places as Egyptian tombs and Pompeiian ruins. Over the centuries, marbles have been made of a variety of materials, from smoothed stones, bone and clay to porcelain and glass. Marbles made of clay were first made in the U.S. late in the 19th century by the Akron Toy Company. They were previously imported from Germany. Then in 1915, Sam Dyke created a method of clay marble mass production in which a wooden block was carved out to allow six marbles to be made at once. Through this invention, Dyke’s factory was able to turn out about a million marbles a day. This made marble production cheaper, and bags of 30 marbles could be sold for one penny. Previously, marbles cost a penny a piece. Some of the most collectible glass marbles are sulphides, which have interesting figures, flowers, swirls or other images inside them. Most early forms of these of marbles were made in Victorian-era Germany, but in the 1990s, an unusually large amount of them hit the American market with different claims of provenance. None of the figures in these newly discovered marbles had ever been documented before. A number of them contained two figures, called “doubles,” but only a handful of authentic doubles are known to exist. Therefore,

some of these “rare” pieces were selling for thousands of dollars each - a good incentive for fakers. Suspicions of authenticity are always raised when too many “undiscovered” antiques of a certain type suddenly flood the market, so authentication tests were done on some of these marbles. Lab results indicated that the marbles contained a higher amount of sodium than known antique sulphides, making them more prone to damage and breakage. Modern reproductions, fakes and fantasy glassware of all types can contain higher levels of sodium because this formula is cheaper and allows less skilled glassworkers more time to work with the material. So how can you know if a sulphide marble is modern without a lab test? This is where a 10x loupe is your best friend. Magnification will show a difference in the surface of the marble. The surface of an antique marble should have irregular pitting and straight thin lines, whereas the surface of a newer marble will have wavy, curved or swirly black lines. Also, the majority of antique sulphides contained only one figure, so sulphides with more than one figure should undergo further authentication. If the figure looks fuzzy or the marble appears cloudy, it’s a modern piece. Since early marbles were handmade, new collectors sometimes think that a pontil mark is a clear indicator of an antique marble; however, some contemporary artisans still make collectible marbles by hand, individually, and have throughout the decades. So while a pontil mark may be a first step, it’s definitely not a

Data from Invaluable’s Art And Auction Marketplace Released Signs Point To Solid Auction Market Growth In 2017

2016,” said Invaluable CEO Rob Weisberg. “Based on a sample set that’s statistically significant and representative of the industry at large, we believe the auction industry will reach positive growth in the spring and remain there through a strong December finish. In fact, we project that the industry will swing 15 percent positive year-overyear in 2017,” said Weisberg. Weisberg believes several factors will contribute to the rebound; the traditional cyclical nature of the art and auction market, as well as improvements in all three of the world’s largest art markets – including strengthening U.S. and Chinese economies and market stabilization in the United Kingdom following the Brexit vote. Weisberg also pointed

to continuing growth in the online art market. The 2016 Hiscox Online Art Trade Report estimates the online art market is growing at a rate of approximately 24 percent annually and will hit $9.58 billion by 2020. In 2016, Invaluable’s auction revenue grew 30 percent year-over-year, and buyers on the marketplace grew by 14 percent in the same period. “Some of the instability of the past year and a half appears to be lessening. We saw strong results from the important sales October through January, which gives me a great degree of confidence that the industry is moving in the right direction,” added Weisberg. Invaluable, among the world’s leading online marketplace for fine art, antiques and collectibles, recently released an analysis from the company’s comprehensive database of auction results. The data indicates that the global auction market, which has been buffeted by slumping results for 18 months, is poised for significant growth this year. The analysis, which is based on a representative sample set of more than 500 auction houses that actively ran live auctions on the Invaluable marketplace in 2014, 2015, and 2016, charts the percentage change in total hammer per auction yearover-year. Invaluable’s price archives show total hammer for the auction houses included in the sample set equaled more than $1.7 billion in 2016. Based on the new trend analysis, this same subset of auction houses will eclipse $1.96 billion in total hammer in 2017. “The trendline supports what we are seeing on the ground and demonstrates that the total hammer for our community of auction house partners is steadily growing. While taking into consideration the seasonality of the business, our data shows that the auction market hit a low point in July of 2015 but has been working its way back toward positive territory and sustained growth throughout

Antique advertising was one of the sale’s strongest categories. An excellent, original Abner Zook (Pennsylvania, 1921-2010) bas-relief sculpture painting of a hay-baling scene boasted beautiful fall colors and an impressive size of 32-by-18 inches. The busy landscape depicted Amish farmers at work, one of them commandeering a four-horse bailer clearly emblazoned with the manufacturer’s name: McCormick-Deering. It sold for $6,000. A 60-inch-long canvas advertisement for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Congress was hand-painted with images of the showman as well as legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Opening at $1,000, it sold for $5,640. Milestone’s

A fine piece of Americana with crossover interest to collectors of early movie-related memorabilia, a circa-1912 Keystone Cop papier-mache parade mask displayed appealing colors and amazing condition for its age. The whimsical reminder of Hollywood’s silentfilm era flew past its $300-$600 estimate to close at $1,800. The auction held many sweet surprises for collectors of soda pop and soda fountain antiques. Topping the sizable list of Coca-Cola pieces was a rare and desirable 1920s stained and leaded-glass hanging lamp. A beautiful production with richly hued glass panels, its fine condition helped boost its final selling price to $3,000. Three Ward’s syrup dispensers were bright additions to the sale. Advertising the company’s Orange, Lemon and Lime-Crush products, respectively, all three sold well above estimate, with the Lime-Crush example achieving $2,040.
