Horst Auctioneers To Hold Part One Of Clarke Hess Estate Sale On April 26 And 27 Sulpher-Inlaid Furniture, Fraktur, Textiles, Iron Among Highlights Of First Session

Bodnar’s will sell a rare Paul Evans sculptural front floating sideboard in its Thursday, March 28 sale in Edison, N.J. This piece was made by Evans in 1974 in his studio in New Hope, Pa. Evans was an American-born furniture designer, sculptor, and artist who is famous for his contributions to American furniture design and the American craft movement of the 1970s. His creation of metal sculpted furniture set him apart. He studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art

and worked in New Hope, Bucks County, sharing a showroom with woodworker Phillip Lloyd Powell. Evans also studied at several other institutions, including the Philadelphia Textile Institute in Philadelphia, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the School for American Craftsmen. In the 1950s, he began making copper chests and followed with sculpted steel-front cabinets. Evans had a two-man exhibition in 1961 titled “America House,” held at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York (today named the Museum of Arts & Design). In 1964, Evans became a featured designer for furniture manufacturer Directional Furniture.

By Karl Pass Horst Auctioneers of Ephrata, Pa., will hold the first of three sales on behalf of the Clarke Hess estate on Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27. Hess, of Lititz, Pa., passed away at 64 following a six-year battle with ALS. The Horst family are distant cousins of Hess. The Pennsylvania German community not only lost one of its kindest, but one of its most knowledgeable historians with the passing of Hess. He served as vice president and a principal owner of Hess Home Builders of Neffsville. His father and older brothers began the business in 1964. In 1985, Hess purchased his ancestral Hess Homestead in Warwick Township, just outside of Lititz, and properly restored the property, which has been featured in several articles and television programs. He often opened the home to various historical groups and local garden clubs. Among Hess’s passion was the study of Mennonite genealogy and decorative arts. His 2002 book

An active member of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, he joined the board of directors in 1981. The 11th Annual Governor Wolf Historical Society Antiques Show managed to dance between the snowflakes on March 2 and 3, escaping the worst of the storm, and was a huge hit. Located just south of Historic Bath, Pa., in the Wolf Academy, the show had more than 500 in attendance, and more than just one of the dealers stated it was their best show ever. Highlighting the active sales was a highly decorated Cowden & Wilcox batter jug. It was priced at $4,000. A show-stopper in the folk art category was a large 38-inch wooden carved and painted cat. And, as always, historical society members were in period attire demonstrating hearth cooking. The tastings

were great. The Schoolroom Café food was served up by Daily Grind, ranked number one in the Lehigh Valley. Perhaps the most endearing feature of the popular regional show is the site and its 18th century buildings. The academy dates to 1785, and the dealers set up booths in three of the buildings on the property. The crackling fires, the plaster walls, detailed moldings with red milk paint, and wide heart pine floors were admired by all and set the mood for a fabulous show. Evans’ pieces were frequently signed, and some of the custom items have a signature and a date. The artist’s relationship with Directional Furniture set a unique standard for creative manufacture by insisting every piece be made by hand, finished by hand, and supervised by the artist at each step of production. He died in 1987. This sideboard has a sculpted and painted steel front with patchwork copper on the top and sides. It is covered by a single piece of black slate that sits at the top. Each example may look similar, but each is one of a kind. It has a welded signature on the base of the right most side door and is dated “1974.” The piece was purchased from the Paul Evans Studio in New Hope, Pa., in 1974, and has been in the consignor’s family ever since. It comes from a Monmouth Beach, N.J., estate. Bodnar’s Auction Sales is proud and excited to bring this piece to the market. Bidding will be offered in-house, through phone and absentee bidding, as well as online through Invaluable and Auction Zip. The pre-auction estimate is

are heavy spenders on vintage toys. In almost every case, they pursue this passion because their parents could not afford those toys in their youth, so as affluent adults, they are determined to acquire what they once could not. We all collect for different reasons. However, buying to get things you did not have as a child is a bit risky—a hole that cannot ever be filled.

The other week, I was looking at an online catalog from a militaria dealer. I found myself looking at several items that were identical to pieces I had owned in my early years of collecting. I thought to myself that I really wanted to reacquire those items that I had first bought in my teens and now could afford to buy back. I really did not want to restart that collection as much as I wanted to recapture an earlier moment. If you have collected your whole life, I am betting that at some point, you got rid of some or all of your earliest purchases. Sometimes those

what I collect now. That is really what got me to reject going back and rebuying those items. The luster was gone. That being said, I also know of many a collector, particularly among men, who seek as adults to acquire the toys of their youth. This has led to a highly speculative market for toys from the 195070 period. I have seen outrageous prices paid, particularly in the run-up prior to the 2008/09 recession, for G.I. Joe figures, Marx play sets and more. Conversely, having a generation passing, we have seen a decline in toy train prices, as those who remember those are no longer buying them at the rate that they once did. We all are a product of our past. We value those physical memories of our childhood. However, as collectors, we need to be cognizant that we cannot go back. I have talked to some of the collectors who

early acquisitions got traded out for better items. Sometimes your collecting tastes just changed. And sometimes, you just needed money for something more important like a car repair or an engagement ring. Whatever the reason, your earliest collection items go back out into the world, leaving you with just a memory. Almost every collector that I have met has such a story. There are also a few who have never gotten rid of anything in their lives. Bless their ability to retain their treasures and always keep them with them. I recall a collector friend in Lancaster who still had every car that he had ever owned and a colleague who still had their first purchase, an early brass framed Henry rifle in near-mint condition. Pretty hard to top that! I do think as collectors we do grow and evolve, so what I collected in my youth is not

Philadelphia Chippendale Mahogany Wing Chair Brings $183,000 At Pook & Pook Varied Two-Day Catalog Sale Yields $1.77 Million The first sale of 2019 was a dazzling success for Downingtown, Pa., auction house Pook & Pook. Pook’s Americana and International auction on Jan. 11 and 12 drew its strength from a number of single-owner collections, achieving a total of $1.77 million (including buyer’s premium),

with a 95 percent sell-through rate over 750 lots. The two-day event was well-attended; day one of the sale saw standing room only on Friday evening, having drawn guests in with cocktails, small appetizers and a final opportunity to preview the sale. On Saturday morning, bidders were back, and their bid cards were flying. Online bidding was also available through bidsquare.com and saw a total of 1,172 online users approved and bidding on 97 percent of the lots offered. The number of registered users is a record for Bidsquare. In house, a total of 481 requests for phone bids over the two-day sale kept Pook’s staff on their feet, while absentee bids numbered 451. With an emphasis on fine furniture in this sale, it was no surprise that many bidders were willing to stretch their wallets to earn the winning bid. The This Chinese export porcelain punch bowl first four lots boasted a depicting the British Navy on one side and a provenance from Titus satirical print scene of John Bull and French Geesey, and auctioneer counterpart scowling at one another James Pook preceded the realized $12,200 to a phone bidder. first lot by noting that it hadn’t been on the market for close to a century. With that, bidders were off to the races, and G e e s e y ’ s Chester County, Pa., walnut spice chest with line and berry inlay and turned bun feet, ca. 1755, realized $67,100. The Connecticut An Arthur Meltzer winter landscape went for $14,640. Pilgrim Century

sunflower chest, from the collection of Bruce and Edie Smart, incited quite a competition as well, with a result of $24,400. It was underbid by an adolescent boy in the front row who was bidding on behalf of his father, and although he wasn’t successful on the chest, the young man did place a winning bid on other treasures in the sale. This sunflower chest offered was the second in so many sales for Pook & Pook, with a similar example selling in Pook’s last Americana auction in September. Other New England furniture from the Smart collection included a Massachusetts Chippendale mahogany block front chest of drawers, ca. 1760, for $10,980, and a Connecticut Chippendale cherry tea table, ca. 1775, with an old finish, achieving $9,760. A Philadelphia Queen Anne tiger maple dressing table from the estate of Charlene Sussel generated interest and sold for $34,160. Another item from Sussel’s estate, the miniature American Neoclassical mahogany chest of drawers, ca. 1830, with gilt outlined drawers and painted columns, had many guests eager to inspect its surface and sold for $3,660. The daughter-in-law of Arthur Sussel (1889-1958), the well-known Philadelphia antiques dealer/antiquarian, she lived in Rockville, Md., and was the chief librarian at the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission. Rare English Thomason Corkscrew Sells For $23,244 The recently concluded www.Collectorcorkscrews.com online auction featured 1,000 corkscrews offered by collectors from all over the world. The specialist online platform is being used by several major collectors, including Paolo de Sanctis, the renowned Italian collector and author of the book “The Corkscrew, a Thing of Beauty.” A result of these sales has been the demand for the

handcrafted examples of the 18th century. The early handmade pieces were made in France, England, Ireland, or Holland. Most were decorative and pocket sized (often with a folding worm or a sheath to protect the screw) though some highly-prized mechanical corkscrews were handmade, particularly in Ireland and France, before 1800. There are, of course, crossover pieces, i.e. manufactured pieces with hand decoration. In the latest auction, with items from the de Sanctis

and gilded decoration. It had a fine ribbon-like screw (lot #24475). After spirited bidding, this fine piece ended up at $13,538, going to the Bucharest Corkscrew Museum, which has dominated the corkscrew market in recent years. The museum, with a collection of around 30,000 corkscrews, houses examples of almost all corkscrew designs known and bids aggressively for early pieces because of their beauty and individuality. The museum also has the world’s largest

collections of both pressing irons and trivets. Bucharest is the capital of Romania. By contrast with the 18th century pieces, which have been selling well, many classic 19th century corkscrews, typically patented mechanical corkscrews from England, United States, Germany, and France, have been providing great buying opportunities. For example, a near-mint version of the Sperry singlelever corkscrew patented in

the U.S. in 1878 sold for $1,850 (lot #23492). According to the www.CollectorCorkscrews.co m database (past sales section) of six Sperry corkscrew sales, the $1,850 price is 25 percent below the average over the past 10 years. CollectorCorkscrews.com sales average around $250 per corkscrew. In this recent auction, $110 could buy a very stylish French Le Presto 1899 French patent singlelever corkscrew. Over the past 10 years, this corkscrew has sold in the range of $100 to over $250 depending

on condition. These online auctions are conducted twice a year and operated by volunteer collectors worldwide, with low selling fees of 2.5 percent. Over 10,000 corkscrews, ranging in price from $100 to over $30,000 have been sold since the initial auction in 2008, representing over $5,000,000 in sales. The group’s website is an excellent free resource for obtaining a value estimate of most corkscrews. The next international online auction is scheduled from April 12 through 21.

collection, the highest price realized was $23,244 (lot #24468), achieved for an English “manufactured” Thomason mechanical corkscrew with fine handcrafted “Japanning” decoration. Without the decoration, the Thomason corkscrew would sell for around $500. Japanning was a highly-skilled handcraft introduced in England around 1800, incorporating black lacquer and gilt. Each decoration is slightly different. Japanned Thomason corkscrews are rare and prized for their beauty. This piece attracted competition with 74 bids, selling to an American collector. A Thomas Edison/Joseph Swan British patent archive for incandescent lighting from the 1880s sold for $5,000, and a group of three silver ingots highlighted by one made at the U.S. Mint in San Francisco brought $6,800 at a Treasures Galore Auction held Jan. 24 to 28 by Holabird Western Americana Collections, online and in its Reno, Nev., gallery. The auction was bursting with nearly 4,000 lots of Americana across a wide range of collecting categories. For those unable to attend in person, online bidding was facilitated by iCollector.com and Invaluable.com. “This was the third auction in what was a very exciting fall and winter season,” said Fred Holabird of Holabird Western Americana Collections. “It was a big success.” The Edison-Swan patent archive (c. 1880-83), which pertained to one of the most

important modern inventions, incandescent lighting, consisted of original British patents issued to men working for Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan as part of the Edison-Swan Company at the onset of the invention and manufacture of a product that changed the way people lived and worked. The three silver ingots were the sale’s top lot. The one produced at the Mint in San Francisco weighed 6.11 ounces and was stamped “7” (the batch number). The other two ingots comprised a 7-ounce silver bar stamped “JMC” (Johnson Mathey), with the Canadian maple leaf, and a 1-by-2-inch 1.56-ounce ingot stamped “Berg Bros.” (L.A. / S.F.). All were .999+ fine grade silver. The ingots were offered on day one, which kicked off with nearly 100 lots of antique bottles, many of them from the
