“Mary Cassatt At Work”

Show Marks First Large-Scale Exhibition Of The Celebrated Artist’s Work In The U.S. In 25 Years

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is thrilled to present “Mary Cassatt at Work,” the first largescale exhibition of the artist’s work in the U.S. in a quarter century. The exhibition will run from Saturday, May 18, through Sunday, Sept. 8. Pennsylvania-born and a celebrated member of the French Impressionists, Mary Cassatt built a groundbreaking career through hard work and artistic vision. For six decades, Cassatt was a committed, professional artist, making the social, intellectual, and working lives of modern women a core subject of her prints, paintings, and pastels. She once wrote, “Oh the dignity of work, give me the chance of earning my own living, five francs a day and self-respect.”

“Mary Cassatt at Work” will present over 130 of her works in various media to show her evolving practice as an artist and demonstrate her commitment to the “serious work” of artmaking. It will present new findings about her materials and working methods, which were advanced and radical for her era, based on detailed technical studies of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s significant Cassatt holdings.

“Art was Mary Cassatt’s life’s purpose and living,” said Sasha Suda, the George D. Widener director and CEO of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “This exhibition will focus on Cassatt’s professionalism, her biography, and the wider Parisian world she inhabited. It’s my hope that this exhibition will reshape contemporary conversations about gender, work, and artistic agency.”

“Mary Cassatt at Work” will feature works from the PMA’s extensive collection, including some of Cassatt’s most celebrated paintings and prints, as well as loans from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and private collections.

“We hope visitors come away with a sense of who Cassatt was and how carefully she constructed her identity as a working artist,” said curators Jennifer A. Thompson, The Gloria and Jack Drosdick curator of European Painting and Sculpture and curator of the John G. Johnson collection, and Laurel Garber, The Park Family assistant curator of Prints and Drawings. “With this exhibition, we’ve sought to reexamine the full breadth of Cassatt’s

art through the lens of her creative enterprise and draw attention to her commitment to ceaseless experimentation and bold techniques.”

A multimedia tour will be available, featuring audio, images, and videos. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated

catalogue. Following its run at the PMA, this exhibition will travel to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Legion of Honor.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is located at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway. To learn more, call 215-763-8100 or visit www.philamuseum.org.

Map Of The Carolinas From 1685 Sells For $29,325

A rare early first state map of the Carolinas from 1685 sold for $29,325 and a map of the Americas and surrounding oceans from 1740 rose to $20,125 in Old World Auctions’ online-only Auction #196, which ended on Feb. 7. The sale totaled $420,277.

Taking top lot honors was the A New Map of Carolina by Thornton, Morden & Lea. The map showed early settlements

and land owners and included depictions of Native Americans and animals, such as a turkey and even an ostrich.

The map market continues to be robust, said Eliane Dotson, who co-owns Old World Auctions with her husband, Jon. We saw numerous items sell for well above their estimates, and there was strong bidder participation overall. Several of the categories that did particularly well were early world maps and 19th century Americana. Of the 790 lots offered, 698 were sold. That was an 88 percent sell-through rate. All prices quoted include the buyers premium.

A rare first plate map of the New World from 1573 by Abraham Ortelius, titled Americae sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio, is one of the most famous maps of America and one that had enormous influence on the future cartography of the New World.

Independence Seaport Museum To Unveil New Entryway And Introductory Gallery Exhibition

William Rush (1756-1833) Ship Figurehead “Mary” On Display

When the doors open to the public on Friday, March 22, at the Independence Seaport Museum (ISM), in Philadelphia, visitors will step inside through a newly designed and welcoming entrance that will be more accessible to the community. Facing southward onto Spruce Street Harbor Park and toward ISM’s two historic ships, Olympia and Becuna, the new entrance

will more closely link the physical museum building with its ships and the riverfront area, thus making it easier for the public to access the building from its previous, north-facing point of entry. Beyond the new ticketing area that museum-goers will pass through upon entering the building, a reimagined, 1,900-square-foot introductory gallery space housing

a new, permanent exhibition featuring approximately 150 objects, many of which have never before been exhibited, awaits guests of all ages.

“This is a substantial change for the museum as we continue to work in making our building and world-class collections accessible to the community. Facing not only our historic ships but also the many attractions in Spruce Street Harbor Park, we hope this new entrance will show an entirely new face to the community,” said Peter S. Seibert, Independence Seaport Museum’s president and CEO.

ISM’s new entryway enables better visibility of the museum and significantly improves public access to the building for those visitors arriving on foot or following a tour of the historic ships. Designed by A K Architecture and constructed by KMC Partners, both of Philadelphia, the new entrance, which cost approximately $500,000, was made possible by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC). The new introductory gallery space was funded by the generosity of museum supporters.

“What an exciting and pivotal moment for the museum and everyone involved in bringing this new entrance and exhibition to fruition,” said Peter Ernst, chairman of Independence Seaport Museum’s Board of Port Wardens. “Not only does this allow for a new, inviting experience for our visitors and members alike, but it provides ISM with a launching point as we continue to plan for a future that highlights the importance of our local waterways and our deep connections to them.”

As guests enter the building, they will arrive in a new ticketing lobby featuring kiosks from which tickets can be purchased (advance online ticket purchases will still be available). ISM’s staff will be available to answer questions and assist visitors with using the kiosks. This new system is designed to enhance and streamline the entry process.

Beyond the ticketing area, visitors will experience a new introduction to the

museum through an exhibition mounted in four newly designed galleries, each focused on a different theme of ISM’s collections: Philadelphia’s American Revolutionary naval history, the pop culture mania for Admiral George Dewey who commanded America’s naval forces in the Pacific during the Spanish-American War of 1898, the recreational use of the waterway, and the Delaware River’s shipyards that have been an integral part of our nation’s maritime history. Included in the exhibition are perennially favorite objects, others are new acquisitions and still more are treasures from the museum’s permanent collection that have rarely, if ever, been on display.

Among the highlights of the exhibition and one of the oldest objects to be on view is the signal book, dated 1777, owned by Admiral Richard Howe of the Royal Navy. This exhibition marks the first time it will be on view. During the summer of 1777, Admiral Howe and his brother, General William Howe, abandoned Britain’s official strategy of separating New England from the remaining colonies and, acting without authorization from their superiors, decided to seize Philadelphia and attempt to capture the Continental Congress. The brothers launched a two-pronged attack by sea and land; although the British Army occupied Philadelphia, the Navy was stalled by American defenses in the Delaware River as Congress escaped west to York, Pennsylvania. (Eventually, Admiral Howe was able to join his brother in Philadelphia. After their underwhelming campaign in Philadelphia and with military defeats in New York, King George III ordered the Howe brothers to return home.) Signal books, such as this example, were top secret documents used by ships’ captains to communicate with each other within a navy. They provided the secret code for understanding the messages “spelled out” by signal flags on a ship. Admiral Howe gave this book to captains of his fleet in August, 1777, as they arrived at Delaware Bay to begin their siege on Philadelphia, some 100 miles up the river.

The new introductory exhibition also will give visitors an opportunity to see familiar objects from new perspectives. One such important work is a rare ship’s figurehead carving titled “Mary” (also known as Peace), ca. 1815-20, which is attributed to William Rush (1756-1833) who is regarded as America’s first sculptor. Only two other Rush figureheads are known to survive; most were lost when the ship they were on was broken for scrap or sunk. For 50 years, Rush worked as a master ships carver in Philadelphia, and, with his apprentices, he carved a wide range of wooden figures, including church statuary, ships’ figureheads, furniture and trade

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Real Art For Real People

The other week I was binge watching home decorating shows online. This is a guilty pleasure of mine, as I find it fascinating to see how people use, or sadly in many cases, don’t use, antiques in

their decor. In a recent video, a young matron from the coastal south was showcasing her home and antiques purchases. The antiques were a pleasant surprise for me to see, although many of her Georgian pieces seemed more revival than period. Still, she loved them and the decor.

What bothered me were the number of mechanical reproduction modern copies of paintings hanging on the wall. She trusted her eye to acquire furnishings but did not trust it enough to select art, whether new or old, for the house.

Art, in my estimation, is one of those things that truly separates us from other creatures on the planet, both the creative expression of it and also the desire to have it in

our homes. Sadly, the world of modern art criticism has created a sense of intense fear by people about their own abilities to select and hang artwork in their homes.

On any given Sunday at the Adamstown, Pa., markets, one can find dozens of antique paintings for sale from dealers in flea markets and co-ops. One can find 18th-century still-lifes next to post-Modern portraits hanging next to 19th-century landscapes. The choices abound, and yet many people are afraid to acquire artwork for their home. Better to pick a slick modern computer-generated copy than to look for an original?

In my mind, it is critical to begin with deciding what you like. Study and learn about

your interests. Also recognize that if you like Picasso or Monet that you won’t find one at the flea market for a dollar. But what you can collect is Cubism or Impressionism by lesser artists, followers, out-of-period works, etc. You just need to learn a bit and train your eye and begin the adventure of looking for work.

Collectors are often intimidated by the prices paid for art. What if I make a mistake? Thousands of dollars is a huge mistake! What I could counter to say is that there are many areas in fine art that are inexpensive to collect for quality works. First and foremost comes illustrator art done in the 20th century for inclusion in magazines and books. Works even by major

A Power Play At Heritage Auctions

figures in this area remain a fraction of what similar paintings would be by traditional artists. I have purchased illustrator art over the years, and it is a wonderful area to collect on a budget.

A second area, especially of interest if you live in small quarters, is miniature portraits. Yes, important 18th-century American portraits are expensive, and rightly so. However, there are wonderful miniatures that have been produced since then that are of great quality at a fraction of the price for a signed early American example. They represent a good buy in the marketplace and are well worth the trouble to hunt them out.

So take a moment and look for some real art for your home!

Only Known Sealed Case Of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Cards, Featuring Gretzky’s Rookie Card, Sells For Record $3.72 Million

A cardboard box long ago stashed away and forgotten about in a Saskatchewan basement sold for $3.72 million at Heritage Auctions. In that cardboard box were 16 other boxes, each filled with 48 packs of 197980 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards, the most famous and coveted

cardboard on skates given the debut of Wayne Gretzky. In that cardboard box were 10,752 cards that were made in and stayed in Canada, an unknown number of which, maybe two dozen, give or take, feature The Great One’s first skate as an Edmonton Oiler.

That O-Pee-Chee case, which became the subject of media attention when the sale was announced, was among more than 1,600 lots in Heritage’s Feb. 24 and 25 Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction. The nearly sold-out auction realized $25,980,406 thanks to more than 2,700

bidders worldwide, and had several records set.

Heritage set a new benchmark for a high-grade 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle this time, a PSA Near Mint-Mint+ 8.5, which realized $2,370,000, a record for the grade. That is more than double the record for the grade realized in 2016.

Heritage still holds the record for the most valuable 1952 Topps Mantle sold at auction, and the $12.6 million realized for the SGC Mint+ 9.5 in 2022 remains the most ever paid for any piece of sports memorabilia.

That case of O-Pee-Chee hockey cards joins Mantle in

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

that rarefied air. The case’s consignor, who hails from the Western Canadian province of Saskatchewan, was a collector in the 1960s and ‘70s who snatched up endless amounts of Canadian-made cards to trade. He bought endless boxes and cases of cards, so

signs. Sculptures such as this example were carved out of massive, aged pine logs by a team of wood carvers under the direction of a master craftsman, painted and then installed on the front (or bow) of a ship and embodied the ship’s name serving as an advertisement when the ship was in port. For a 200-year-old carving, little is known about its many journeys or the ports it graced. Early references refer to the figure as “Mary,” sometime in the 20th century, she was renamed Peace due to the presence of a dove and a lamb in the carving. The carving was discovered in Lancaster County, about 80 miles west of Philadelphia. When visitors to Independence Seaport Museum see “Mary” in its new location, they will be able to examine her in an entirely new way: she will now be mounted as she would have been when she first sailed the seas on a ship’s bow.

Another featured object to be seen in the new introductory exhibition for the first time is a rare piece of memorabilia dedicated to Admiral George Dewey (1837-1917) who, as Commodore, was ordered to lead the American Pacific fleet in an attack on Spanish ships harbored at Manila Bay in the Philippines at the outbreak of the Spanish-American war. On the morning of May 1, 1898, Dewey’s fleet sank eight Spanish ships without loss to his American squadron. As a result, he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral, and within the year, Congress promoted

him to Admiral of the Navy, a position created for him; he was the first and remains the only person appointed to that rank. Dewey was celebrated as a hero to all Americans. Following the Battle of Manila Bay, Congress created (and then awarded) a special medal with Admiral Dewey’s portrait displayed on the front and a sailor on the back. It is one of only four United States military campaign medals ever produced with the portrait of the commanding officer on the front. Tiffany and Co. was hired to design and produce the medals. Each of the 1,848 that were made was personalized with the name and rank of each man in the squadron for presentation, and they were given to all the crew members of the nine ships, including Olympia (which visitors can tour at ISM), who fought in the battle regardless of rank, race or nationality. Dewey, a very humble man, wore his medal

b ackwards so that the portrait of a sailor, rather than his own, would always be facing out. Five such medals will be on display in the new exhibition at ISM. The example featured here was given to Commander Benjamin P. Lamberton (1843-1912) who was a native of Carlisle, Pa. Later a Rear Admiral, Lamberton was directed during the battle to take surrender terms to the soldiers in the fortress of Cavite overlooking Manila Bay. Dewey gave clear instructions to his gunners that if Lamberton did not return quickly, they were to shell the fort into submission.

For those who are longtime supporters of Independence Seaport Museum and those visiting for the first time, all will find its new point of entry more conveniently located. Once inside, they will delight in and learn from the new exhibition that spotlights some of the most exciting aspects of ISM’s vast collections.

many that his family long ago lost count and lost track. Ultimately, the consignor’s son found this case behind stacks and stacks of other stuff, says Heritage Sports card specialist and consignment director Jason Simonds.

The entire case was eventually delivered to Schererville, Ill., home of the Baseball Card Exchange. With cameras rolling, its founder, Steve Hart, authenticated the case as the only known example, now the first to come to auction,

and the most valuable case of unopened cards ever sold at auction. The $3.72 million shatters the previous record set in 2020, when a sealed 12-box case of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball cards featuring the rookie debut of Michael Jordan sold for $1.8 million.

The case realized $3.72 million because of the treasure(s) inside. In 2020, Heritage sold one of only two known PSA Gem Mint 10 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee rookies for $1.29 million, the first hockey card to break the million-dollar barrier. Shortly after, Heritage brokered a sale for a Gem Mint 10 example for

Heritage set a new benchmark for a high-grade 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, this time a PSA Near Mint-Mint+ 8.5 realized $2,370,000, a record for the grade. That’s more than double the record for the grade realized in 2016.

a record $3.75 million.

We knew from the moment we heard this O-Pee-Chee case existed that it would get the attention of hockey card collectors worldwide, said Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions at Heritage.

Two more Mantles were among the auction’s home runs, a 1951 Bowman Mantle, his rookie card, realized $360,000 in a PSA NM-MT 8. Another example of the same card, this one graded PSA Good+ 2.5, sold for $284,400, because Mantle signed it during his early playing days.

All that glitters was gold in this event, as evidenced by the $138,000 realized for a Chicago Bears alumni ring made for Dick Butkus a month before his death in 2023. The auction’s most valuable game-worn and signed jersey was Hank Aaron’s 1962 Milwaukee Braves jersey, which realized $420,000. One of the events biggest hits was one of Michael Jordan’s practice jerseys dating back to his days as a Tar Heel, which came from the collection of a University of North Carolina student manager. It sold for $108,000.

There was a pile of valuable laundry in this auction: a signed, game-worn 1969 Willie Mays San Francisco Giants road jersey realized $276,000,
