Historic Military and Firearms Sale Grosses $750,000
A vendor and a customer talk about various train sets in the vendor’s booth during the Scott Antique Markets show in Columbus, Ohio.
By Jess Grimm When you’re a collector, you can’t wait for your next hunt and the rush you feel when you find something good you’ve been looking for. Collectors of all varieties came out for that purpose in This grouping of Native American artifacts dug in Lake County, Ohio, in the 1890s with impeccable provenance from the digger’s family includes a large 8.5-inch pop-eyed birdstone. The collection sold for $18,600. A motivated crowd and relentless internet bidding drove the total to $750,000 at Milestone’s Historic Military and Firearms Auction held at the company’s suburban Cleveland, Ohio, gallery on Jan. 27. There were many new had,” said Miles King, co-owner of customers who had never bid in our Milestone Auctions. “A lot of gun sales before and more bidders than usual participating at the high end. We were very pleased.” Antique and vintage firearms were led by a Springfield M1-D Garand DCM .30-caliber sniper rifle in original sealed packaging with all accessories present. In untouched condition and accompanied by the paperwork documenting its original sale, it finished near the top of its estimate range for $7,200. All prices quoted in this report include a 20 percent buyer’s premium. An Enfield P53 .577 three-band Civil War rifle from 1862 was identified as the gun of Ransom Tifft of the 18th Massachusetts Infantry. It came with a letter of provenance from renowned historical military artist Don Troiani, who acquired the The 1938 World War II anti-Semitic poster gun directly from Tifft’s descencriticizing “Degenerate Music” with the dants. The top lot of the sale was a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 170V two-door coupe that originally belonged to Nazi SA physician Dr. Rudolf Beuring. One of only two of its type registered in the United States, the earlyproduction 170V had been inspected by several qualified mechanics who noted that it was roadworthy and contained many hard-to-find parts. The car was accompanied by a copy of its original bill of sale, as well as Beuring’s Nazi military profile with swastika stamps and a copy of his personal evaluation prepared for Adolf Hitler. The vehicle sold within estimate for $42,000. World War II material in general, and Nazi memorabilia
elusive piece missing from their collections. Exhibitors were selling all manner of items, including furniture, china, jewelry, toys, primitives, and, to the enjoyment of Nick Boerger, “Star Wars” collectibles. “I found a ‘Star Wars’ special limited edition VHS set with a lithogram,” said Boerger, showing off his prize at a table in the food court. He also found a few collectible action figures still in their original boxes. Another collector, Travis Garrett, of Portsmouth, was also on the hunt at the show. Garrett, a firefighter of 27 years, has an assortment of fire memorabilia. When asked if he found anything, he paused and looked at his wife. “We spent more money than we wanted to, so that would be a yes,” he said smiling. Exhibitors from all over the country helped customers sort through their items and talked shop with avid collectors of their respective pieces. One vendor discussed the differences in model train makers with a customer and told stories about where he found each piece. A few rows over, another shopper was deep in conversation with a vendor about the qualities of an old pocket knife in a display case. Throughout the building, collectors were sorting through war posters, glassware, old records,

He was a career officer who rose to Chief of Operations of the General Staff (1942-43) under General Erich von Manstein. The tunic sold above estimate for $8,400. The most sought-after uniforms, however, were those of U.S. Army Air Force P-39 pilot Joseph Scherer of Cleveland, Ohio. The exceptionally complete archive consisted of Scherer’s painted A-2 jacket, embroidered white silk scarf with embroidered 97th Fighter Squadron patch, mission logbook, dress uniform jacket and two additional jackets, shirts, officer’s cap and other military memorabilia. A visual time capsule of a distinguished pilot’s career, it sold for $12,000 against an estimate of $3,000-$4,000. Asked why he thought the grouping had tripled its high estimate, Miles King simply replied, “Two bidders really wanted it.” Among the edged weapons, a rare Nazi National Hunting Association dagger with a triple-engraved blade stamped with an Eickhorn insignia fared best, reaching $3,700. Analogous to the Nazi opposition to “degenerate art,” a 1938 anti-Semitic poster titled “Entartete Musik” or “Degenerate Music,” with the image of a black saxophonist
with a Star of David on his lapel was bid to $7,500 against an estimate of $4,000-$6,000. A grouping of Native American artifacts dug up in the 1890s in Lake County, Ohio, came with provenance from the digger’s family. The centerpiece of the lot, a large 8.5-inch pop-eyed birdstone, was the exact match to the one seen in a cabinet photo taken 125-130 years ago by the original collector. It sold for $18,600 against an estimate of $16,000-$24,000. To learn more, readers may call 440-527-8060 or visit www.milestoneauctions.com. Images courtesy of Milestone Auctions.

There is still another opportunity to hunt the Columbus, Ohio, markets on Saturday and Sunday, March 24 and 25, before the market moves for the summer to Washington Court House, Ohio. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT I remember when I was a boy, genealogy was something that I dabbled in, but it was hard and complex. Records were hard to find, and you had to pay a researcher to chase things down in order to find something. I recall older researchers who regularly sent
checks to researchers in distant towns to try and chase things down. The state library in Harrisburg was my haunt, and I assumed that I found every single resource they had to offer. Friends who were in the SAR tried to help find that missing Revolutionary War ancestor, but the files were not complete. We discovered overgrown family cemeteries and tried to use atlases to chase down family farms.

In today’s world, thanks to the Internet, researching your family is as easy as logging into your computer. I am now able to go back dozens of generations and have several Revolutionary War ancestors. All was done by never leaving the house. So, do I miss the smell of books and the poison ivy in the cemeteries? Absolutely, but I also have filled in so many gaps. The value of genealogy is not just personal, but it’s also about researching objects in your collection. I have used some of the big ancestry websites to help trace items in my collection. When I worked in Lancaster, membership in ancestry.com was part of our business expenses to trace families and identify individuals. For me, there are several caveats to using the Internet

genealogy sites. First, you need to check and re-check sources. It is called “research for a purpose. Make sure that everything you know, you have checked twice. I was doing some family research and found a claim of royal nobility. It looked great, but the reality was the claim was spurious. Second, people live a long time today, but our ancestors did not routinely live to 90 in the historic past. So, accepting a 90-year-old who fathered children at age 60 is to have probably missed at least one, possibly two generations. Finally, the lesson for all of us is that we look to the past through a very foggy telescope. We miss details, we see only what has survived and caught our eye, and so it is not likely that you will chase every story to the ground. I remind my wife, who is frustrated that she cannot find certain

A Turkish Ottoman Empire Flintlock pistol with Arabic writing to the top of the barrel (est. $1,000$1,200) also stands out among the antique weapons. This type of sword was created during the Mughal period, and its use in warfare
appears to have been largely restricted to the 17th and 18th centuries. It was considered a highly effective weapon against heavily armored cavalry, and the use of pata by the Maratha soldiers and royalty has a storied history. Making Good On A Super Bowl LII Bet, Boston To Send A Patriot To Philadelphia John Singleton Copley’s Mrs. James Warren (Mercy Otis) On Loan To Philadelphia Museum Of Art The outcome of what may be the most revolutionary Super Bowl bet ever made is taking place in the hometown of the victorious Philadelphia Eagles, when one of Boston’s most distinctive patriots makes a striking appearance in the American Galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The museum will display a painting from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: John Singleton Copley’s “Mrs. James Warren (Mercy Otis),” which portrays
The portrait “Mrs. James Warren (Mercy Otis),” around 1763, is by John Singleton Copley, American, born 1738, died 1815. The oil-on-canvas is on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; bequest of Winslow Warren.
one of New England’s most ardent advocates for independence in the decade before the Revolutionary War. This special loan was triggered by the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the New England Patriots, before which Timothy Rub, the George D. Widener director and chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, had made a friendly wager with Matthew Teitelbaum, the Ann and Graham Gund director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, about the outcome of the game. “With the Eagles facing the Patriots in the Super Bowl, we decided to have a bit of fun by putting some skin in the game. I offered to send our wonderful painting by Benjamin West, ‘Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky’ (1816), to Boston should the Eagles lose, and asked my colleague to send us an equally important work from his collection if the Eagles triumphed. I am delighted to say that a portrait of one of New England’s most fascinating patriots will be on loan, and I expect her to

Photo by Joseph Hu. stand very tall under the circumstances. This superb painting will remain on view in Gallery 102 for the next three months, where Eagles fans from around the world can enjoy it,” stated Rub. “While I was very much looking forward to seeing Benjamin West’s painting of Benjamin Franklin in our galleries, I am happy to share this magnificent portrait with new audiences in Philadelphia. Mercy Otis was a revolutionary woman who
truly embodied the spirit of patriotism,” said Teitelbaum. “Not only does Mercy personify the spirit of revolution and liberation, she is arriving just in time for Women’s History Month,” said Kathleen Adair Foster, the Robert L. McNeil Jr. senior curator of American Art and director of the Center for American Art. “She’s the perfect prize for Philadelphia after the Eagles’ victory, representing one of Boston’s finest artists and one of its most accomplished women. She will be
given a place of honor here in our galleries.” Poet, playwright, political satirist, and historian Mercy Otis Warren (1728–1814) was a true American patriot and one of the best-educated women of her generation. Raised in a family of Massachusetts politicians who spoke out against British colonial rule, she initially published political plays and parodies anonymously, to cloak her identity as a woman. Later in life, she published under her own name a massive three-volume history of the American Revolution. Copley depicts Mrs. Warren in her more conventional feminine role as wife and mother, demonstrating her nurturing skills by tending nasturtiums. She wears a fashionable silk dress and lace-trimmed stole that display her wealth, stylishness, and matronly modesty as well as Copley’s remarkable abilities. The finest painter in the colonies, the self-taught Copley not only brilliantly evokes the textures of skin, satin, and silver embroidery but also captures the grace and determination of this champion of women’s participation in
the political life of the nation. Copley’s portrait of Mrs. James Warren (Mercy Otis) will remain on view in the American Galleries until Sunday, June 3. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at 26th Street. For general information, call 215-763-8100.

“The Mummy” And “King Kong” To Highlight Horror Movie Poster Sale
OUTSTANDING
SALE
1933 Poster For “The Mummy” Could Bring $60,000 At April 8 And 9 Heritage Auction buried alive. The well-preserved piece comes from Universal’s original European distribution and is expected to sell for $60,000. A “London After Midnight” (MGM, 1927) Argentinean onesheet (est. $30,000-$60,000) shines a spotlight on one of the “holy grails” of lost cinema, the last known copy of the film, which was destroyed in a fire in an MGM studio vault in 1965. Posters from the film, which starred Lon Chaney and was directed by Dracula’s Tod Browning, have been as elusive as the film itself over the last 80 years, and this Argentinean one-sheet is the first to appear at Heritage since 2009. A 21-by-58-inch Japanese STB tatekan from “The Seven Samurai” (Toho, 1954) (est. $20,000-$50,000) is an extraordinary collectible poster for fans of Japanese cinema and director Akira Kurosawa. This rare country-of-origin poster from Kurosawa’s most prestigious film is believed to be the only known copy in existence. A bittersweet tale of the price of war and the loss of noble warriors, “The Seven Samurai” is one of the most influential

Rare movie posters from classic American horror flicks, including the only-remaining Belgian poster for “The Mummy” (Universal, 1933), will haunt Heritage Auctions’ movie posters event on Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8, in Dallas, Texas. Cinema’s classic monsters in the 600-lot auction range from a beastly 47-inch-tall poster for “King Kong” (RKO, 1933) to an elusive poster from the iconic vampire film “London After Midnight” (MGM, 1927). “Our spring auctions traditionally offer posters with stunning images from some of the most iconic movies ever made,” said Heritage Auctions Vintage Posters director Grey Smith. “We believe there are rare posters in this wonderful group for every taste.” The 24.5-by-33.5-inch stone lithograph poster for “The Mummy,” which is making its auction debut at Heritage, is the only remaining poster of its kind. It depicts the haunting visage of Boris Karloff as the shrouded Egyptian priest Imhotep, the mummy who escapes thousands of years after being

against the cream-colored ball, which also grades NRMT. The ball has letters of authenticity from PSA/DNA, JSA, and SGC, as well as a notarized letter from its original owner’s family. And it’s a grand slam with lot #132, a Mickey Mantle game-used H&B bat from 1960. Estimated at $15,000-$25,000, this bat shows signs of heavy game use with marks on all sides of the bat, but its factory stamps are still strong. This bat, dating to one of the most deflating Yankee seasons in memory, is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from PSA. It is signed, sealed, and delivered with this sale’s fantastic assortment of sportsrelated collectors cards. Over 100 lots of merchandise representing every major sports league in America are certain to generate competition amongst collectors. Lot #274, a complete master set of T205 American Tobacco Company baseball cards, is estimated at $40,000-$60,000. This set has been handpicked over several years and currently ranks eigth on the PSA Master Set registry with a 4.53 GPA. It is one of only six complete sets on the list. Every card and
This is a 1960 Mickey Mantle game-used H&B bat. variation is represented, even the rare Dick Hoblitzell and Christy Mathewson variations. This Olympic level sports sale rounds out with great selections of uniforms, equipment, awards and trophies, souvenirs, game balls, nodders, and other top tier collectibles. Lot #198, a once-in-a-lifetime offering of 12 unopened Horrors of War cards packs, is estimated at $20,000-$40,000. These were issued in 1938 under the claim that these picture cards depicting modern warfare could be helpful teaching aids. The theory was that
if children were to know the “Horrors of War,” then they would know peace. Millions and millions of packs sold at the beginning of WWII, but most have been lost to time. Today, these unopened packs in exceptional condition with their original distribution envelope are considered rare. These are the first and only “Horrors of War” wax packs graded by PSA. Their final grade will be released imminently. “We are delighted to present our second Premier Sports Memorabilia sale. This new division has really
taken off, and it is so exciting to see such growth and interest in these categories. Kevin Bronson and Tommy Sage Jr. have done a great job to position Morphy Auctions as an emerging leader here in such a short time. As always, it’s hard to pick a favorite item amongst all the fantastic lots on offer. Right now, Cassius Clay’s early, bright purple satin training trunks are catching my eye. Their color, accompanying materials and markings, and place in history are really astonishing. We welcome you to visit our gallery
