He has more than 10 years of experience in the auction industry, having served as a specialist and auctioneer at two Ohio firms, Garth’s Auctions in Columbus and Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati. “Although I am not getting back into the auction business full-time, I am looking for opportunities, such as this, for interesting and desirable collections that could make a fun auction,” stated Richmond. The theme of the sale fits perfectly with Richmond’s interest in Americana. He handles a variety of quality American antiques through his antiques business, the Ohio Company Antiques & Art, under whose name this auction will be run. On Thursday, April 11, local author Tim Richardson will have a book signing event at the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium from 5 to 7 p.m. His book titled “Creekbanks” is a fictional story, but the people and places are real. Richardson’s story is based on the life of a Rancocas Creek farmer, Michael McBride, who except for his service during the Civil War, never ventured far from the stream’s banks. He was born and raised on the farm and expected he would live out his life and be buried on this land that had been home to the McBrides for nearly

My Thoughts On The Sale Of The $100,150 Super Mario Bros. Nintendo Game On Feb. 6, H e r i t a g e Auctions sold a rare first-release, factorysealed copy of Super Mario Bros. for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (known as the NES) for $100,150. The copy sold was a sticker-sealed edition that was first released when the original Nintendo system was test marketed in New York and Los Angeles in 1985, prior to its national launch. The game was graded by WATA games in 9.4 condition. The day after the sale, my email was brewing with questions asking what my thoughts were on the sale. Rather than address all the questions I got individually, I decided to write this article instead. Before we get to my thoughts on the actual sale and what it means for the hobby of collecting vintage (and modern) video games, we have to take a look back as to how we got here. I received my Nintendo Entertainment System when I was 11 years old. Up until this point, I was an avid video and computer game enthusiast. I was lucky enough to own an Atari 2600 home video game system and an Apple IIc home computer. Both were readily used for games. I spent countless hours captivated by the electronic worlds they created.
When the original Nintendo launched in 1985 with little fanfare, I was 9. By early 1987, the NES was everywhere. Nintendo knew how to advertise, and both the games and graphics on the original Nintendo were incredible compared to anything at the time. By the age of 12, I was an avid Nintendo fan. Video games would come to define the next decade of my life in some form or another. It was also during this time that I was a collector of comic books, coins, and toys. Vintage video games were becoming serious collectibles, so at the age of 19, I started buying and selling vintage video games on eBay. By this time, I had a massive personal collection of games spanning across almost every home video game system ever made, but there was always something special about each and every Nintendo system ever created. The games were just magical. Fast forward to 2005, and the vintage video game market had been transformed. Pre-Nintendo video games and systems such as Atari, Colecovision, and Intellivision were falling in price and popularity. The speculative markets that ushered in these items as serious collectibles was fading. Nintendo and post-Nintendo systems from the likes of Sega, NEC, and SNK were skyrocketing in price. By 2012, it would be

clear that the future of vintage video games was Nintendo and later. Nintendo was able to do what most other video game hardware manufacturers could not: It created steady and popular franchises that are still relevant today. Unlike other hardware manufacturers that have adopted digital media, Nintendo has been slow to do so, instead releasing incredible limited collector’s editions of some of its most popular games. Its most recent video game system, aptly named the Nintendo Switch, is a hybrid of a portable and home system with games being contained on micro mini cartridges packaged in beautiful sturdy hard plastic cases. Nintendo continues to innovate and has captured multiple generations of hardcore fans and enthusiasts. My commentary on this sale would not be complete without giving readers an understanding of third-party grading as it applies to the video game marketplace. There are currently two different companies that certify and grade video games. The first is well-known: VGA (Video Game Authority). It has been around for several years and grades video games and hardware on a basic 0 through 100 grading system that increases on scale in 5-point increments. This is the same scale used by AFA (Action Figure Authority) in the

toy grading market, because both AFA and VGA are part of the same company. The second video game grading company is a newcomer to the scene. WATA Games was created within the last year, and to create even more confusion in the marketplace, rather than use VGA’s 0 to 100 grading system, WATA Games uses a 0 to 10 grading scale that borrows elements from the graded comic book industry grading system. For instance, a solid near-mint game under WATA standards is 9.4. On VGA’s grading scale, near-mint starts at a grade of 85. This dual grading discrepancy will continue to create chaos and confusion in the market for years to come. Imagine if PCGS and NGC, two top-tier coin grading companies, used different grading scales to grade coins. The end result would be utter confusion and an uncertain marketplace. So what are my thoughts on the sale of the $100,150 Super Mario Bros. game? First, a lot of the articles surrounding the sale seem to exclude the fact that the game was bought by several collectors and investors in the industry and not just one person. This is important because one of the buyers was Jim Halperin himself, who started Heritage Auctions and whose firm sold the game. Collectors should be careful over how much

long-term collectors take a logical wait-and-see attitude before spending thousands of dollars on factory-sealed and graded vintage video games. Whether a long-term trend emerges here based on this one inside sale is not guaranteed. Rather, it is much more feasible that a speculator’s market develops instead. I also want to add that both VGA and WATA Games appear to be very reputable companies. That said, collectors may wish to question how much emphasis they place on certified video games while two completely different grading systems exist in the market. I urge collectors to simply buy what they love and not go into debt or spend more than they can afford chasing speculative dreams of nostalgia. If you take that advice, you can never go wrong. So my advice? Ignore this sale. In the grand scheme of things, it means very little.

weight they place on this sale. A lot of speculators are incorrectly equating brand-new modern video games as investments as a result of interest in the vintage market. This is a miscalculation on their part, and there is no justification to even think that the hobby of vintage video games will become as high profile as numismatics has or even be on par with sports card collecting. This sale tells us none of that, and should excite owners of factorysealed vintage video games, but few others. Nintendo is a behemoth that created an industry of nostalgic franchises. As a result, it should come as no surprise that its products, vintage or modern, are being sought after. What should cause caution is how much money speculators pour into vintage video games chasing gains that may or may not ever materialize. In fact, I would caution that most

Canadian Stoneware Water Cooler Brings $30,680 At Miller & Miller Auction Tulip-Inlaid Shrank Sells For $10,030 A Morton & Company stoneware water cooler from the early 1850s, made by Justus Morton in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, soared to $30,680 to take top lot honors in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s 499-lot Canadiana and Historic Objects Auction, held Feb. 9 online and in the New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada gallery. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include a buyer’s premium. The water cooler easily surpassed its $15,000-$18,000 estimate and was elaborately decorated with figures, including a man wrestling with lions with fish-like heads, a man smoking a pipe, a woman taking snuff and others with Greek, Roman or biblical origins, rare for utilitarian pottery. Morton left Lyons, N.Y., in 1849 to found Canada’s first stoneware pottery factory. The auction was a treasure trove of Canadian history, one that included signs and advertising, historical photographs
and ephemera, clocks, folk art, decoys and primitives, early pottery, fruit jars and stoneware, sports memorabilia, paintings, heirloom furniture and more. Many, but not all of the items in the sale were specific to Canada, hence the title Canadiana and Historic Objects. “Overall the sale was extremely well-received and brought out a number of serious Ontario collectors and dealers who’d never attended a Miller & Miller auction event This tulip-inlaid masterpiece schrank made before,” said Ben Lennox in Upper Canada (Hanover or Gray County) in of Miller & Miller Auctions. the second half of the 19th century and “Many bidders made the attributed to John Klempp sold for $10,030. two- to four-hour car drive www.millerandmillerauctions.com. from all over Ontario, places Phone and absentee bids were like Collingwood, Kingston, also accepted. well as a Great Waterloo County harvest table holding three drawers with wood pegged turned legs, 72 inches long with original stain ($4,025). Antique Canadian license plates proved to be popular with bidders. ($5,310); and a rare pair of 1911 cobalt porcelain enamel plates made by The McClary Stove Company ($2,070). Timepieces also performed well. Station tin flange sign. It carries the image of a young woman in Art Deco attire, pointing gracefully at one of the company’s meters. With colorfully lithographed sides, it is in condition 8.75-plus and 8.5, respectively. The second, a doublesided die-cut tin flange sign advertising Pennsylvania Oilproof Vacuum Cup Tires, harkens to around 1907 and bears the image of a welldressed woman of that period. “Very few examples of this sign are known to exist,” said Mihovetz. “They hardly ever come up for sale.” Petroliana collectors never tire of pretty Polly, the vibrantly hued parrot mascot for Polly Premium Motor Oil. Posed on her perch and boasting excellent color and gloss, she graces Morphy’s sale roster from the front of a scarce onequart Polly can graded 8.9. It will take more than a cracker to take Polly home on auction day. Morphy’s is well-known in the collector community as the go-to source for elusive gas pump globes in superior condition. A fantastic array awaits bidders on auction day, including several that are especially hard-to-find, such as the 15-inch single-lens globe for the West Coast company Beacon Gasoline. Finished in bright primary colors with an appealing graphic of a beaming lighthouse, this is an extremely rare globe. In all, there are 85 stunning gas globes from which to choose, each a work of art on glass. An excellent example of an etched one-piece Independent brand Royal Gasoline globe is graded 9.0, while a perennial collector favorite, a 15-inch Jones Bros. Red Hat Gasoline & Air globe, is on its original metal body. Now a quaint reminder of the early days of “filling stations,” an all-original Correct

and only minor edge wear, the 23-by-23.5-inch clamshellshape sign is rated a solid 9.5 out of 10. Hailing from Great Britain, a very rare double-sided diecut porcelain sign for Morris Trucks is designed as a headon view of a radiator emblazoned with the slogan, “Buy British and be proud of it.” Displaying excellent color and gloss, it is one of the best examples of its type that Morphy’s team of experts has ever seen. Its sides are rated condition 8.9-plus and 8.75-plus. Big, bold and all-American would be the way to describe one of the auction’s top highlights, a sensational Ford V8 porcelain dealership sign. It’s so large at 75.5-by-40.5 inches that it had to be designed as two parts that fit together perfectly and seamlessly. Henry Ford wouldn’t have had it any other way. The result is an iconic piece of advertising in beautiful 8.75+ condition. Advertising signs featuring stylish ladies have always commanded a premium price, and there are two such signs worthy of special mention in the sale. The first is a highly sought-after Boyce Moto Meter Authorized Service

If condition is king, then expect a red carpet to be rolled out on Wednesday, April 3, as Morphy’s presents a regal auction line-up of gorgeous signs, gas globes and early pumps in a 746-lot Automobilia and Petroliana Auction. The high-octane selection includes many entries from collections that were established back when petroleum-related items in pristine condition were much easier to find. “There are many signs in this sale that would be hard to improve upon. They would be considered upgrades for even the finest of known private collections,” said John Mihovetz, head of Morphy’s Automobilia and Petroliana division. A case in point is the outstanding double-sided Shell Motor Oil die-cut Motor Oil sign dated 1931. With strong crimson and orange coloration
