George Washington Button Sets $225,000 World Record “Holy Grail” Of Washington Inauguration Items Highlights $1.2 Million Heritage Sale Not only did the earliest artifact referring to G e o r g e Washington as the “Father of His Country” set a world record when it sold for $225,000 in Heritage Auction’s Feb. 24 American and Political Auction, but the sale itself set a world record as the highest grossing auction of a political memorabilia collection ever offered. The Historic Odessa Foundation is pleased to present the temporary exhibit titled “As Precious as Gold: A History of Tea Caddies from The Bramble Collection.” The exhibit features more than 150 18th- and 19th-century tea caddies from the vast Bramble collection and will be on display from Tuesday, April 3, to Sunday, Aug. 26. The tea caddy collection was built over two generations and includes more than 400 examples, spanning the period from 1700 to the present. events in the mid-Atlantic region protesting the tax on tea. A mass meeting of 8,000 Philadelphians, the largest crowd assembled in America up to that time, determined that “the tea shall not be landed” and, in the Quaker belief of nonviolent protest, the Polly and her tea were sent back down the Delaware River into Delaware Bay and back to England. It’s hard to imagine that nearly 250 years ago, tea was the focus of events leading directly to the Revolutionary War, and our concepts of “taxation without representation.” A member of the North American Reciprocal Museum Association (NARM), the Historic Houses of Odessa, owned and operated by the Historic Odessa Foundation, are open to the public March through December, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 4:30 p.m.; and Monday by reservation. survive as a low-cost brick and mortar competitor, Toys R Us was in trouble. The company took on massive amounts of debt in an effort to compete and remain solvent. This was the start of their downfall. On Sept. 18, 2017, as the holiday shopping season inched closer, Toys R Us filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company had not turned an annual profit since 2013. Immediately after the announcement was made, a bevy of toy manufacturers announced that the company had owed them millions in back payments. This sent shockwaves through Wall Street as stocks for Mattel and Hasbro, two well known and respected toy manufacturers and vendors of the struggling retailer, sank on the news. Toys R Us badly needed to restructure its massive debt load, which was estimated to be at $5 billion dollars, but who would give them the chance? Then it happened. On March 13, 2018, CNBC announced that the struggling retailer had made quiet plans to liquidate its entire business. And while no one has any idea what the total fallout will be when all is said and done, toy collectors who grew

and command sizeable sums on the secondary market. I fondly remember struggling to find less popular toy lines like Battle Beasts, StarCom, and Super Naturals at traditional department stores, but found shelf after shelf of them at Toys R Us. When LucasFilm brought back the “Star Wars” franchise in the late 1990s, Toys R Us had a steady amount of exclusive merchandise related to the new movie trilogy that could only be purchased there. Sadly, as the new millennium approached and online retailers started to gain heavy ground, Toys R Us was caught in a bloody price war with agile and efficient online retailers who didn’t have the high costs associated with traditional retail brick and mortar stores. It was at this time that Walmart, who feared losing its then market dominance to online up and coming superstar Amazon.com, launched an all out offensive against other retailers by offering ultra low prices and a new price matching guarantee. As years went on, it become clear that while Walmart was fighting a wellcalculated war with Amazon.com and was going to

Some very fond memories of my pre-teen years centered around my parents surprising me with trips to various toy stores. Looking back, I fondly remember visiting Lionel Kiddie City, Kay Bee Toys, and Toys R Us on an almost weekly basis. Most of my original G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Masters of the Universe toy collections were bought from Toys R Us back in the mid-1980s. These trips would generally be initiated by my parents after I got my report card or completed some other academic achievement that made them proud. Today, most toy collectors have a lot of love because of Toys R Us. The company has existed in the hearts and minds of children of all ages for over half a century, but, sadly, all that is about to change. Founded in 1948 by Charles P. Lazarus, Toys R Us would achieve what few other retailers ever could during their heyday in the later half of the 20th century. In the 1980s and ’90s, the company was able to kill off most of its retail-based competition by attempting to
engage in a price war, taking on rivals Lionel Kiddie City and Kay Bee Toys head on. Lionel Kiddie City would hold on until 1993 before going out of business. Kay Bee Toys would hold out until 2009, but it was pretty clear by the early 2000s that the retailer was in trouble. Toys R Us was a behemoth, the proverbial 900-pound giraffe (pun intended) that leveraged its massive size with exclusive marketing deals from some of the most popular toy manufacturers. The company scored praise for signing exclusive merchandising deals with companies like Lego, Nintendo, Mattel, and Hasbro. Some of these limited release exclusives can be seen selling on eBay for several times their original retail price. Back in the early 1990s, few could have imagined that the company would face financial woes just due to the fact that most big-box retailers like K-Mart, Walmart, and Target could not match the sheer magnitude of the products they carried. This was a major plus for toy collectors, as a lot of the lesser-known toy lines carried by Toys R Us that were simply ignored by traditional department stores went on to have a cult following

up before the millennium are already feeling severe sadness and disbelief. Even Amazon.com, with its virtual online storefront, never carried the amount of products that Toys R Us did during their heyday. Without a dedicated toy retailer, the outlook for the toy industry is slightly dim at the moment. To readers who remember what Toys R Us stood for and can remember visiting the store in their youth, I leave you with a parting thought. Can a toy industry built on nostalgia survive when today’s children will

“The Corkscrew: A Thing Of Beauty Collectable Category Skyrockets In Popularity “The Corkscrew: A Thing of Beauty is the title of the now classic corkscrew book published in 1990 by two Italian collectors, Paolo de Sanctis and Maurizio Fantoni. The November 2017 corkscrew sale conducted by CollectorCorkscrews.com featured many corkscrews from the de Sanctis collection, and not surprisingly the common feature of these corkscrews was their beauty. It is fair to say that most corkscrews, even very valuable ones, would not readily be described as “a thing of beauty. Most are desirable because they are rare. Perhaps they also have a patent reflecting some ingenious design. But they are usually fairly plain items reflecting their simple utilitarian purpose. Not so with the corkscrews from the de Sanctis collection. The most memorable, and most expensive, was a Thomason corkscrew featured on the front cover of the book. The Thomason corkscrew is perhaps the most famous and well-designed corkscrew ever produced. Patented in England in 1802, it was produced in great quantities throughout nearly the whole 19th century. A standard
This American piece, marked by the maker Tiffany, has fine details of a lion, snake, and elephant’s head worked into the silver handle. The sheath is plain silver except for the elephant’s trunk, making the design cohesive. The naturalistic art nouveau style corkscrew sold for $10,200.

The Woodshed Saga: How A Small Picture Framing Garage Studio Became A Fine Art Auction Firm When James and Angelina Wood opened The Woodshed Gallery in the small town of Franklin, Mass., five decades ago, they couldn’t have foreseen the many changes in basic American life that would ultimately transform their little picture framing studio and makeshift art gallery in a fourcar garage into the internetbased fine art business it is today. The year was 1968, a year that saw plenty of seismic shifts across America and the world. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights and Women’s Liberation movements, the Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations— all of these were lead stories in a year of change and tumult. One thing that didn’t change much at all though was technology. It was the analog age. James Wood tended to the picture framing side of the business, while Angelina used space to paint watercolors, mostly local scenes, such as cow farms and churches. She held classes there, too, teaching others the fine art of watercolor painting. Their two daughters, Mary-Ann and Lois, were involved in the business for decades, starting in high school, and their son, Bruce, pitched in as well. And that’s how it was for The Woodshed Gallery in the years leading up to the new millennium. Pictures were framed, art was produced, and other local artists dropped by to say hello and maybe consign a painting or two, in the hopes of making a sale. Then, in the early 2000s, the big box stores (think Hobby Lobby and Michael’s) popped up, siphoning off picture framing revenues.
The family soldiered on, with the parents and two daughters keeping the business afloat in the face of lower-priced competition. Bruce’s interests were more in fine art than in picture framing, and he went on to earn a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He became an artist, art conservator, and filmmaker. Bruce’s successes spanned the decades, beginning with solo exhibitions in the 1970s at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and the Museum of Modern Art (Beaubourg) in Paris. More recently, his early work received retrospective exhibitions in Chicago and Madrid and has been included in programs of mid-century abstract experimental films in New York and London. He opened art galleries in Chicago and Michigan, buying and selling fine art and cementing his burgeoning reputation as an expert conservator of oil paintings. Meanwhile, back in Franklin, the early 2000s saw changes for The Woodshed Gallery. Angelina died in 2003, and James’s health began to decline. Lois moved to Florida around 2004 to start her own picture framing business. Bruce lent his time and expertise to help with the family business as best as he could, but he still had two galleries and a conservation business to run halfway across the country. Then, the financial crisis of 2008-2009 hit, and Bruce had to close both galleries. His conservation work sustained him, then his father passed away in 2013. At that point, Mary-Ann

Mary-Ann left to pursue her passion, costume jewelry design. It turned out timing couldn’t have been better for Bruce. “New England is full of old paintings in need of restoration, so I was busy right from the start,” he said. “Then, I became an underwriter for the Providence (R.I.) affiliate of the PBS series “Antiques Roadshow.” That was like a magnet, attracting more business. PBS has a loyal, educated base, and that worked in my favor.” It didn’t hurt, either, that the state and local economies had been doing well in the 1980s, a phenomenon nicknamed the Massachusetts
Miracle, which allowed for additions to be put onto the garage, effectively tripling it in size. A new road was built that made driving from Franklin to Boston a breeze, bringing more business. And the NFL stadium in nearby Foxboro, where the New England Patriots play, is near to Franklin. That increased awareness of the town. In 2014, a conversation with a man who had paintings to sell would change Bruce’s life forever. “The more we talked, the more we agreed that auctioning the artwork was probably the best way to go, and I was about to suggest a reputable auction house or two in the area when it occurred to me, ‘Wait a minute. I bet I can auction these paintings as well as anyone else.’” The man agreed. Bruce began to make plans for his first public auction, in the very birthplace of The Woodshed Gallery - the four-car garage in Franklin, which had become his art

It helps to determine an artwork’s age and authenticity. restoration and conservation studio. But another conversation derailed that plan and launched Bruce Wood into the digital age. The conversation was with Mr. Dylan Ferrara, an auctioneer who is licensed to give classes. “He told me not to conduct a live auction,” Wood recalled. “I just stared at him. ‘Why not?’ His answer: ‘You don’t want to be committed to methods that are outdated. For you to hold a live art auction, even a small one in your garage, you’ll need 12 to 20 people. You’ll have all kinds of headaches, both personally and logistically.’ Ferrara’s prescription was an internet-only auction. Bruce Wood took that advice and never looked back. The sale was a success. Buyers and sellers were pleased with
the outcome, and a new business was soon created with a name all its own: Woodshed Art Auctions. In just over three years, the firm has carved a niche in the crowded and competitive fine art auction marketplace. That wouldn’t have been possible without the internet. Today, Woodshed Art Auctions conducts sales throughout the year. In April 2017, it held its first Prestige Signature Collection: Master Artworks auction, the confluence of a group of excellent pieces arriving at once in the gallery and limited to artworks by internationally recognized artists. It was a debut auction, featuring just 26 works. The top lot was a Van Gogh drawing ($12,000). Many artworks in Continued on page 11

Woodshed sales are attributions - paintings and drawings done “in the manner of” an artist, but lacking the paperwork and provenance to officially declare them authentic. It’s a challenge, determining what art is genuine and what isn’t, but Wood is up to the task, having decades of experience in restoration and conservation and an arsenal of modern-day technology. The most sophisticated is the near infra-red spectrometer, used to identify the components of paints, inks, canvas and paper. “The spectrometer is a very specialized tool that has already identified some works as non-authentic and others as possibly the real deal,” Wood said. “We’re examining some Van Gogh drawings with it now, and the materials date from the right period.” Other tech-tools include ultraviolet spectrum lighting and UV camera, which shows retouching, restoration, and old and new varnishes, and infra-red lighting and IR camera, which show some of what may be under the paint, not visible to the naked eye (in some instances it has revealed under-drawings, changes to the composition and entire paintings hidden beneath the surface). Also put to good use are a

Now, thanks to aggressive marketing, advertising and public relations, that dilemma has flipped. Bruce has plenty of buyers; now he needs a stronger and steadier stream of artworks to fill a seemingly insatiable desire for original and attributable artwork at attractive price points. There’s little doubt that will happen. Success does beget success.
James and Angelina would be proud. Woodshed Art Auctions is a family-owned art gallery specializing in oil painting restoration and live and online art auctions, celebrating its 50th anniversary. For more information, call Bruce Wood at 508-533-6277 or email him at bruce@wood shedartauctions.com.

Wood has a dedicated staff of two. The first is his partner, William Janosco, an artist and art historian, with a background in 19th- and 20thcentury American art and two degrees in fine art. The men co-owned and operated the Fenway Galleries in Chicago and Michigan before Bruce relocated back to Massachusetts. There, Janosco helped him launch Woodshed Art Auctions. Both men have museum backgrounds. Janosco was director of the library at the Terra Museum of American Art in Chicago, and for years he was a photo researcher at the Ryerson Library of the Art Institute of Chicago. Bruce, as a conservator of oil paintings, is a member of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in London. Jerry Lewis: Solo Movies And Memorabilia By William J. Felchner The late Jerry Lewis (19262017) enjoyed a long and successful career in Hollywood. Best known for his slapstick style humor and wild antics, Lewis was first glimpsed by moviegoers in “My Friend Irma” (1949), appearing in the role of Seymour alongside his longtime partner Dean Martin (1917-95). The comedy duo of Martin and Lewis famously ended their partnership in an acrimonious split in 1956, but not before making a total of 17 films together. Their final movie was “Hollywood or Bust” (1956). Both Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin would soldier on in Hollywood following their breakup, with Lewis finding renewed success as a solo performer. Here are 10 Jerry Lewis solo movies and some of the great memorabilia they generated for today’s collectors. “The Delicate Delinquent”
(1957). His first movie after splitsville with Dino, Lewis stars as Sidney L. Pythias in this comedy-drama directed by Don McGuire. Also featured is Darren McGavin as Mike Damon, a big city cop who eventually sets “juvenile delinquent” Pythias (Lewis was nearly 31-years-old at the time) on the right path. The standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) is a big draw for collectors, featuring the manic Lewis hanging from a lamp post along with the blurb: “Jerry Lewis is a teen-age ‘terror’ who scares nobody but himself…” One example in very fineplus condition sold at auction for $51. Collectors also love the eight-card lobby set, with one offering hitting a top bid of $55 in very fineminus condition. “Rock-a-Bye Baby” (1958). In this charming comedy, Lewis plays boob tube repairman Clayton Poole, who is saddled with newborn triplets belonging to his former hometown sweetheartturned-movie star Carla Naples (Marilyn Maxwell). For sheer visual fun, look to the film’s eight-card lobby set, which features classic scenes from the picture, including one of Lewis hanging precariously from a TV antenna on the roof. One set in fine condition sold for a reasonable $26. “The Geisha Boy” (1958). One of the all-time Jerry Lewis classics, the comic stars as Gilbert “The Great” Wooley, a third-rate magician who heads to Japan as part of a USO tour to entertain American troops. Also on board are Marie McDonald, Suzanne Pleshette and Robert Hirano, the latter of whom plays Mitsuo, the

The big three-sheet poster (41-by-81 inches) is a collector favorite (provided one has the room to display it), with one example in folded fine/very fine condition hitting a top bid of $42 at auction. For something truly different – or off the wall, in keeping with the spirit of Jerry Lewis filmdom – look to the Danish one-sheet poster (24-by-32 inches). One example in folded fine-plus condition brought a top bid of $27. “The Bellboy” (1960). The setting is the famous Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, where Lewis plays a mute bellboy named Stanley. Lewis, who produced, wrote and directed, also plays a fictional version of himself, listed in the credits under his real name, Joe Levitch. One example in folded fine/very fine condition sold at auction for $84. “Cinderfella” (1960). The actor’s comic version of the old Cinderella tale, Lewis plays Fella, who, upon his father’s death, is forced to live with his evil stepmother (Judith Anderson) and her two conniving sons (Henry Silva, Robert Hutton). The latter take over dad’s former mansion, reducing poor Fella to servant status. An original oil-and-pencil-oncanvas painting (17-by-23 inches) by Norman Rockwell, commissioned for the movie by Lewis himself for the sum of $50,000 in 1960, which served as the prototype art for all “Cinderfella” promotional posters, lobby cards,

The movie’s standard onesheet poster (27-by-41 inches) commands a pretty penny, with one example in very fine condition hitting a top bid of $143.40 at auction. The various foreign posters are really well done, including the French Grande poster (47-by63 inches). Titled “Docteur Jerry et Mister Love,” one example in folded very fineminus condition sold at auction for $113.53, no doubt reflecting the French people’s great affection for Lewis. “The Patsy” (1964). Jerry Lewis stars as Stanley Belt, a nobody bellboy who is tapped to replace a dead comedian who had recently perished in a plane crash. Ina Balin appears as Ellen Betz, Jerry’s love interest. A complete set of eight lobby cards in very fine-minus condition brought $69 at auction. “The Disorderly Orderly” (1964). Jerry Lewis stars as
Jerome Littlefield, an orderly with medical school ambitions who runs amok at Whitestone Sanatorium and Hospital. Check out the grocery store scene – typical Lewis slapstick comedy – where a runaway gurney is pursued by several ambulances, resulting in the usual chaos and then some. The film’s standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) is a real howl, featuring the comic disclaimer: “NOTE: This picture was made entirely without the co-operation of any medical association!” One example in very fine-plus condition sold at auction for $67. Lewis also appears in drag as Mama Heebert. For something different, try the Australian Daybill poster (13by-30 inches), released for consumption by audiences Down Under. One example in near mint-minus condition brought a bargain $14.34 at auction. “The Errand Boy” (1961). Lewis stars as Morty S. Tashman, a paperhanging flunky who is hired by Paramutual Pictures’ Dexter Sneak (Howard McNear) as an errand boy. His real job - to spy on his fellow employees in order to determine where all the studio’s money is going. The movie’s standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41 inches), “Jerry Lewis as ‘The Errand Boy’ Fractures Hollywood With A Million Howls!” blares the tagline, is a real dandy. A British quad poster (30-by-40 inches) can be a bit more pricey, with one example in folded fine/very fine selling for $119.50. “The Nutty Professor” (1963). One of Jerry’s bestknown films, the comic stars as Julius Kelp, a mousy chemistry professor whose concoction turns him into “Buddy Love,” a veritable chick magnet who proves irresistible to women. One problem, “the nutty professor” can’t control when he will change back to his former self. The beautiful, blond Stella Stevens co-stars.

Key Piece Of Land Located In The Epicenter Of The Battle Of Brandywine Approved For Purchase Brandywine Conservancy Preserves Birmingham Hill Land
Following the purchase and additional fundraising efforts, the Brandywine will develop a master plan for the combined properties. While the Brandywine is in the beginning stages of planning for the use and management of the entire Birmingham Hill property, the initial goals will be to preserve the property’s historic integrity; conserve existing natural resources; provide opportunities for public visitation; develop interpretative and educational programs; and seek out qualified partners to work with the Brandywine to help realize these goals. About the Battle of the Brandywine The Battle of the Brandywine took place on Sept. 11, 1777. Success on the battlefield enabled the British to capture Philadelphia, beginning an occupation that would last until June 1778, while the Continental Army spent an arduous winter at Valley Forge. Starting from Kennett Square, British general Sir William Howe led half his army on a 12-mile march, crossing the Brandywine five miles north of Chadds Ford, and took a strategic position on the heights of Osborne Hill overlooking the Birmingham Friends Meeting House. The British were hoping to make a surprise assault on the rear of Washington’s Continental Army amassed as Chadds Ford. On Birmingham Hill and neighboring parcels, Continental forces hastily formed into battle lines to defend against the British forces attacking from the north. More troops fought in the Battle of Brandywine than in any other battle of the American Revolution. The battle lasted for 11 hours until

100-acre property previously acquired by Brandywine in 2007, bringing the total Battlefield acreage permanently protected in Meetinghouse Road Corridor to over 500. This purchase will also bring fulfillment to the decades of work and major fundraising efforts to preserve the area as a contiguous whole, preventing development in the heart of one of the nation’s most important historic battlefields. Beginning in the mid1990s, the Brandywine identified five large, undeveloped and unprotected neighboring properties along and near Meetinghouse Road in Birmingham Township that included the sites where the most intense clashes of the Battle of Brandywine occurred. In order to protect this land from development, conservation easements were necessary to preserve the historic significance and scenic vistas of these battlefield lands. By 2007, the Brandywine and its partners had raised more than $16 million in public and private funds to acquire the properties and/or place conservation easements with the landowners, resulting in the permanent protection of 485 acres of the battlefield. The remaining 13-acre parcel on Birmingham Hill is the final piece of this major fundraising effort. David Shields, associate director of the Brandywine Conservancy, has been at the forefront of the effort to save the battlefield and this land from development. “Piece by piece, and with the strong support of our major funders, our goal to protect the historic properties in the battlefield’s Meetinghouse Road corridor
is nearing completion,” commented Shields. “This is a personally gratifying moment for me as I’ve been working on this project since its inception.” “This is a key piece of land that the Brandywine has long sought to preserve in order to protect this historic site in honor of the battle and those who fought, and I’m pleased to see it finally coming to fruition,” said Ellen Ferretti, director of the Brandywine Conservancy. “I want to thank David Shields and the many supporters who have previously contributed over $16 million to make the first phase of this effort possible. We look forward to the next chapter in preserving this piece of cultural heritage for future generations.”

Significant Gift Of Works By Winslow Homer Gifted To Portland Museum Of Art Paintings Donated By The Berger Collection Educational Trust The Portland Museum of Art (PMA) is thrilled to announce that it has received a major gift of works by American icon Winslow Homer through the generosity of the Berger Collection Educational Trust (BCET). The Berger gift strengthens the Portland Museum of Art’s position as one of the leading institutions in the world to experience the art and legacy of Winslow Homer. “I am honored and deeply grateful to the Berger Trust for holding the PMA in such esteem,” said Mark H.C. Bessire, the Judy and Leonard Lauder director of the Portland Museum of Art. “The Berger Trust held a thorough selection process for this bequest, and in giving these works to the PMA, they are not only recognizing the unbelievable devotion of the PMA board and staff, but the passion of the Maine community for supporting the arts.” The Berger gift strengthens the Portland Museum of Art’s position as one of the premier destinations to experience the artworks and legacy of Winslow Homer. In addition to these acquisitions and an extensive collection of Homer works, the PMA owns the Winslow Homer Studio in Prouts Neck, Maine, where Homer lived and worked until his death in 1910, which is a

this magnitude has been united in one place.” On the show’s final day, the museum remained open an extra three and a half hours. The exhibition was organized by Carmen Bambach, curator in the Met’s Department of Drawings and Prints. About the Exhibition “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer” presented a stunning range and number of works by the artist, 133 of his drawings, three of his marble sculptures, his earliest painting, and his wood architectural model for a chapel vault. A substantial body of complementary works by his teachers, associates, pupils, and artists who were influenced by him or who worked in collaboration with him was also displayed for comparison and context. Selected from 50 public and private collections in the United States and Europe, the exhibition brought together the largest group of original drawings by Michelangelo ever assembled for public display. The exhibition was made possible by Morgan Stanley.

It is also the most visited drawings exhibition ever organized by the museum. “We are delighted that more than 700,000 people from around the world experienced firsthand the towering genius of Michelangelo through this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition,” said Daniel H.
