Chef Walter Staib To Receive Speaker’s Choice Award At Upcoming Gala FRIDAY APRIL 1, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 14

The Corinne Machmer Sale Unreserved Sale Grosses Nearly $341,000

This unusual blue pressed glass salt signed “Providence” on base, circa 1831-33, from the Providence, R.I., firm of the Providence Flint Glass Works, sold for $4,720.

By Karl Pass “I’m happy for Corrine. She has always been a well respected person and deserves it,” said Jeff DeHart during the successful auction of Corinne Machmer’s collection. The twoday sale was held Feb. 26 and 27 by Conestoga Auction Company, a division of Hess Auction Group in Manheim, Pa. “I didn’t hold anything back. It was time,” said Machmer following the sale. “I’m passing the things on to many people who can now enjoy looking at them like I have and that honestly brings me happiness. Of course, there were some ups and downs in prices, but I’m happy with the outcome and how it was handled. As dealers, we live and die by the sword,” said Machmer. A glass and china specialist, Machmer was a longtime fixture at regional southeastern Pennsylvania shows. Well-liked and personable, the retired antiques dealer is currently in transitional housing. “I had cancer six years ago, but things are good now and I will soon move into my own first story apartment.”

The Speaker’s House, a nonprofit organization located in Trappe, Montgomery County, Pa., is thrilled to announce that Chef Walter Staib is the recipient of the 2016 Speaker’s Choice Award. Chef Staib is best known for his TV show, “A Taste of History,” winner of six Emmy Awards. As a chef and food historian, Staib brings America’s culinary heritage to life through his show and at his restaurant, City Tavern, in Philadelphia. He has been in the kitchen for more than four decades, beginning his culinary career at age four when he was recruited to peel garlic in his uncle’s restaurant. He is the author of “A Sweet Taste of History,” “City Tavern: Recipes from the Birthplace of America,” “City Tavern Baking & Dessert Cookbook,” and “Black Forest Cuisine.” Established in 2008, the

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

Fakes And Speculative Frenzies but ironically that is not what this article is about. As if the current (and overtly expensive) speculation frenzies taking place in both the collectible video game and licensed Lego fields weren’t bad enough, a new threat has emerged that is worse. Simply peruse the online marketplace of both Amazon and eBay and it will not take long to notice what is no longer being hidden from consumers. For the cost of one authentic Lego Star Wars Darth Vader minifigure (or about $10 to $15), a buyer can purchase a set of roughly six to 12 so called generic bricklike figures that resemble the ever popular Lego minifigures. Most of these knockoffs are easily distinguished from original Lego minifigures upon close inspection, but the similarities are quite troubling. Most are also being advertised as Lego compatible. Now to be fair, in most cases the brand name of Lego or even Star Wars is not being used in the descriptions, but these items are still showing up in search results on both Amazon and eBay making it quite easy for a price conscious parent to not realize that they are buying a generic item created without an official license from Disney (who owns the Star Wars license) or Lego themselves. What is even more troubling are the amount of fake Amiibo

buy a 3D printer and do it in less than a few minutes. These advancements will only become more defined as time goes on. In conclusion, not much can be done to stop the current rise of fakes and counterfeit items from coming to the market. Speculators should be forewarned to understand that the greatest risk to their investment is not only overproduction and the loss of interest from fickle consumers, but also the mass appeal of cheap knockoffs that are also flooding the market just as much as legitimate products. I have to ask if the overall risks facing speculators today are even worth it? After all, I don’t think I’ll be hoarding $249.99 Lego sets anytime soon, but to each their own I guess … even if that Lego Star Wars Ewok Village looks awesome on my shelf!

experts often get it wrong. So what led to the rise of modern reproductions hitting the market en masse? There are several factors contributing to this scary trend. The first is the general rise of the Chinese economy. Anything from Star Wars to Coach to Rolex are easily reproduced readily without hesitation. This is one reason that the e-commerce platform known as Alibaba is so popular. Another development that is allowing even the most unsophisticated counterfeiter the ability to create genuine looking knockoffs is the rise in 3D printing and related technological advances. It used to cost a significant amount of money and time for a counterfeiter to get access to a mold to reproduce an item like a Lego brick. Now anyone who has access to a computer and several thousand dollars can

figures that are being spotted as well. Thus far most online retailers have done a fantastic job at keeping these items off of their respective websites, but that will most likely change in the not too distant future. It should be noted that the subject of fakes and reproductions is nothing new to the field of collectible video games. Do a search for almost any rare and expensive classic Nintendo game like “Stadium Events” or “Little Samson” and you are sure to see some sellers literally opening up the cartridge and taking pictures of the actual circuit board! This is being done because of how easy it is to reproduce a classic Nintendo game. Yes, the counterfeiters have gotten that good. You can even buy fully recreated and printed labels and manuals for most classic video games with no mention of the words reproduction on them! This is causing mass havoc in the field of vintage video games, where up until recently no item ever sold for more than $10,000. Today, it is not uncommon to find rare vintage video games closing in on the high five to low six figure mark. This has caused most collectors and even socalled experts like myself to take appropriate measures of caution when buying these kinds of items. Third party grading within this field is one such option, but even the

S743391

F a k e s , reproductions, fantasy made creations, and custom collectibles. Call them what you will, but know that they have been in existence for as long as the antiques and collectibles trade itself. There are distinct differences between a fantasy made or custom creation versus a true fake or reproduction so for all intents and purposes I will limit the scope of this article to the discussion of fakes and reproduction pieces. And while one can argue that some reproductions were never meant to deceive, I would argue that reproduction pieces can very easily confuse even the most educated of all collectors so I am going to include them in my following warning. Regular readers of this column know that the current collectibles market is highly speculative and several mass produced toys and games are all the current rage. Both Nintendo-made video games and their ever growing lineup of interactive figurines known as Amiibo are extremely popular with both collectors and Nintendo enthusiasts. Nintendo has had to increase production due to immense demand on some of the hardest to find Amiibo characters. On the other end of the spectrum, licensed Lego sets and minifigures are being hoarded almost as fast as they are being produced. Case in point, at $249.99 the Lego Star Wars Ewok Village is a

behemoth of a set that clocks in at almost 2,000 individual pieces and also contains 17 hard to find Lego minifigures based off the Star Wars universe. Lego has had to impose a strict limit of one set per household due to how much demand there is for this exclusive set, solely due to speculators attempting to hoard multiples of the item for when it is inevitably discontinued from production. It would appear that the cost of speculation in the collectibles markets has increased dramatically from when I was a kid; who was carefully buying two one-dollar comic books in the hopes that they would increase in value over time! Both Lego and Nintendo have encountered serious production planning issues, with Nintendo going as far to admit that with all the speculators hoarding their ever popular products at the present time, it is almost impossible to gauge production demands. It is believed by some in the trade that almost five out of every ten Amiibo figurines sold are left in their packaging and are being bought solely as investments for when they are discontinued! If these numbers are to be believed that means roughly 50 percent of these products sold will end up sitting in sealed cases never to be used for their original intent. This is wrecking havoc in the collectibles trade,

Chair Is Painted In Rowling’s Hand: “I Wrote Harry Potter While Sitting On This Chair

Speaker’s Choice Award recognizes individuals who embody the leadership qualities of Frederick Muhlenberg and who have made distinguished contributions to the local community, particularly in arts, culture, and/or historic preservation. Previous recipients include philanthropist Leslie Miller, former U.S. Representative Jim Gerlach, Pennsylvania Senator Andy Dinniman, attorney Keith McLennan, and artist Julie Longacre. The award will be presented at the organization’s fourth annual Raise the Roof fundraiser gala on Sunday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Barn on Bridge in Collegeville, Pa. This special evening will include live music by the Community Music School of Trappe, delicious food, and a silent auction featuring unique works of art made by local craftspeople. All proceeds benefit the restoration of The Speaker’s House. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.speakers house.org/raise-the-roof.

it as her main writing chair, authoring the first two of what would become one of the most influential series of all time: “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released in America as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. A few years after the publication of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Rowling donated the chair to a small auction in 2002 called Chair-ish a Child, in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Rather than selling it in its original form, Rowling used gold, rose, and green paints to transform the chair into a piece of literary memorabilia. On the stiles and splats, in gold and rose colors, she painted: “You may not / find me pretty / but don’t judge / on what you see. Rowling signed the back-

rest in the gold and rose paints. Then along the apron of the seat she painted: “I wrote / Harry Potter / while sitting / on this chair. “Gryffindor is painted on the cross stretcher under the seat. Accompanying the chair is the original “Owl Post that Rowling typed and signed to the winner of the Chair-ish a Child auction. It reads: “Dear new-owner-of-my-chair / I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it / ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and ‘Harry / Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’. / My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn’t. / J. K. Rowling.

“Rowling transformed this ordinary piece of furniture into a work of literary art, said Gannon. “It lives now as a powerful, tangible symbol of her determination and incredible imagination. She started in this chair as an impoverished woman and mother with a dream and rose from it as a giant of modern fiction. For additional information, visit www.HA.com.

Iconic photographs sold competitively, auction records were set for 19th and 20th-century images and clients new to the photography marketplace were successful bidders. Tropical Hardwoods In The Spotlight At Winterthur’s Furniture Forum

This high chest by Benjamin Frothingham, Jr, 1760-85 is from Charlestown, Mass. Bequest of Henry Francis du Pont, 1967.1445. Image courtesy Winterthur Museum. Discovery, with Charles Hummel, Curator Emeritus, Winterthur. “Plain, Branch, Mottle & Curl: Circular-Sawing of Mahogany Veneers in Boston by Baldwin Mills, 1825-1859,” with Robert D. Mussey, Jr., Milton, Mass. The object presentations are by Amy Griffin, Lois F. McNeil Fellow, Winterthur Program in American Material Culture; Rosalie Hooper, Lois F. McNeil Fellow, Winterthur Program in American Material Culture; and Catharine Dann Roeber, Assistant Professor of Decorative Arts and Material Culture, Winterthur. Four workshops and a field trip will be offered on Saturday, April 9. “Mahogany/Braziletto/Ced rella/Sabicu and Beyond: Object-Based Macroscopic Study of Tropical Hardwoods” is with Gregory J. Landrey, Dwight and Lorri Lanmon Director of Academic Affairs, Winterthur, and Joshua W. Lane, Lois F. and Henry S. McNeil Curator of Furniture, Winterthur. Participants will learn to recognize features of wood by eye to help identify

wood types and distinguish temperate and tropical hardwoods. Insight into the working characteristics of tropical hardwoods will be gained through close study of tool marks and other clues on furniture in Winterthur’s collection. “Bermuda Cedar Furniture: The Development of an Island Aesthetic, 1680-1780” is with Keith Adams, private collector, New Castle, Del. Objects from the presenter’s collection, supplemented by examples from Winterthur, will ground the study of forms, materials, construction, and decoration unique to Bermuda furniture, with emphasis on developing connoisseurship skills and gaining perspective on the marketplace. “Secondary Woods in British Furniture” is with Dr. Adam Bowett, independent furniture historian. Drawing on examples from the presenter’s foundational 2003 reference book, “Woods in British Furniture-Making, 1400-1900,” supplemented by examples from Winterthur, participants will gain insight into secondary woods used in British furniture, complicating received wisdom about the availability and use of temperate and tropical

forest species in England and America. “Tropical Hardwood Identification: 50 Shades of Brown” is with Dr. Harry Alden, Alden Identification Service. Participants will hone skills at identifying major tropical hardwood genera and species used in historic furniture. Examples from Winterthur will provide opportunity for close study. The field trip, guided by Mark Anderson, Senior Furniture Conservator, Winterthur, is to Hearne

Hardwoods, one of the largest specialty lumber yards worldwide, stocking more than 140 species of domestic and exotic hardwood lumber. The twohour tour covers how logs are turned into lumber and then into products. Proprietor Rick Hearne and staff also will cover managing forests, machining for musical instruments, milling, and drying. For additional information, including special services, call 800-448-3883 or 302-888-4600 or visit www.Winterthur.org.

workability. In their best furniture, cabinetmakers aligned design and materials, merging art and nature to create powerful aesthetic statements. At the same time, the unregulated harvest of exotic hardwoods depended on slave labor and contributed to changes in tropical forests, a legacy that continues today. The talks start with “Exotic Woods and the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library Collections,” with Gregory J. Landrey, Dwight and Lorri Lanmon Director of Academic Affairs, Winterthur. Henry Francis du Pont evinced a particular fondness for 18th-century American mahogany furniture in assembling the worldclass collections at Winterthur. A few of the other lectures will include: “Sylva’s Exquisite Corpse: Exotic Woods, Exotic Applications of Local Woods, and the Tree Origin/Wood Identification/Lumber Trade/Furniture Origin Equation,” with Alan Miller, antiques and decorative arts consultant, Quakertown, Pa. “The Most Fashionable Assortment: Woods in Philadelphia Furniture, 17001820,” with Alexandra Kirtley, the Montgomery-Garvan Curator of American Decorative Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art. “What’s In a Name? That Which We Call a Rose(wood) by Any Other Name Would Smell As Sweet,” with Page Talbott, President and CEO, Historical Society of Pennsylvania. “Tropical Woods in British and North American Furniture, 1600-1800: A Political and Economic History,” the Wendy A. Cooper Furniture Forum Lecture with Dr. Adam Bowett, furniture historian, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. “Exotic Woods and Veneer in Pre-1730 New England,” with Robert F. The names evoke classic style, rich colors, and distant realms: amarillo, brazilletto, calamander, ebony, mahogany, rosewood, sabicu, satinwood, and snakewood. Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library explores such hardwoods in “Exotic Woods, Masterful Makers: Tropical Hardwoods and the Luxury Furniture Trade, 1600-1850,” the Sewell C. Biggs Winterthur Furniture Forum. The Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 7 to 9 conference will feature 16 talks, with speakers from six states and two countries, and an on-stage object demonstration by a master furnituremaker, assisted by Winterthur staff. Saturday’s optional events include four workshops and a field trip to one of the world’s largest specialty lumber yards. The experts are mostly from museums and universities, and they also include a decorative arts researcher, an antiques and decorative arts consultant, a historical society president, a furniture historian, a historic upholsterer, and a cabinetmaker. The cost to participate in the forum, sponsored in part by Freeman’s, is $435 for persons who are not Winterthur Members and $375 for Winterthur Members and nonprofit professionals. Students and graduates of the past five years receive the discounted registration fee of $200. The fee includes Thursday and Friday lectures, lunches, and breaks; and Thursday evening reception. Four optional workshops and a field trip on Saturday are $75 each. All lectures will be in Winterthur’s Visitor Center. To register, call 800-448-3883 or visit www.winterthur.org/furnitureforum and fax the completed registration form to 302-8884953; or mail the completed form, with payment, to Winterthur Information and Tours Office, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, Del. 19735. Tropical woods were used as dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals, and flavorants, and in shipbuilding, architecture, and luxury furniture. When England’s parliament ended import duties on lumber in 1721, merchants rushed to use tropical hardwoods, especially woods marketed as mahogany. Consumers relished the rich colors and eye-catching figures of tropical woods, in solid work and veneers. Cabinetmakers valued their dimensional stability and

dreams are really made of, according to Dave Bushing, Morphy’s Firearms Division expert. To learn more about the rifle and the upcoming two-day sale, visit www.MorphyAuctions.com.

E925587

1903 rifle in the upcoming sale, est. $25,000-$50,000, is truly in a class by itself. It was manufactured in 1905, the third year of production. Besides its outstanding condition and all matching parts, the gun’s earliest proportions and detailing make it truly extraordinary. The vast majority of Model 1903 guns made in 1905 had a .30-06 cartridge. However, this example made in 1905 retains its early and all original .30-03 components. The year 1905 was an important milestone in the design evolution of the Model 1903. That year, Springfield updated its rod bayonet Model 1903 to accept a new knife bayonet. In addition, the government realized that the new Spitzer bullets used in Germany had a distinct advantage over the round nose bullets of the .30-03. As a result, Springfield reengineered its Model 1903 to the new .30-06 cartridge. Given these changes, only a tiny handful of the old style Model 1903 rifles left the factory before being converted to .30-06 specifications, which included shortening the stock and barrel .20inches and changing the rear sight. Incredibly, this 1905 Springfield 1903, on offer at Morphy’s, is one of these early rarities. This Model 1903 rifle was discovered in an attic in Boonton, N.J., where it had been hidden away for over four decades. The family contacted Morphy’s to see if it would be a good fit for auction, as they had no idea of its value, rarity, or historical importance. Morphy’s took in the rifle and gave it a basic and necessary cleaning. It was then that they realized that it had all the earmarks of a rare find. It was taken to the Bethesda, Md., office of Springfield Research. There, Wayne Gagner, one of the world’s leading authorities on Springfield Firearms, disassembled the rifle and did an exhaustive review of every component. This research uncovered, as well as confirmed, the value and history of the find. This Model 1903 comes with a letter from Gagner summarizing his findings.

“This is the only early and all original Model 1903 of this type to come to auction in memory. It is highly unlikely that another example in this condition exists anywhere in the world outside of the Rock Island Arsenal Museum. Morphy’s really went the extra

Morphy Auctions is pleased to offer a world-class rifle at their upcoming firearms sales event to be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10. All 1,400+ lots from this sale are on display in Morphy’s Denver, Pa., auction gallery and available for preview. The Springfield Model

The Montana “Big Sky” Sale Of The Robert Svoboda Collection Holabird’s Western Americana Collections (FHWAC.com) has announced that Saturday, April 2 launches the third in a series of four sales of the great Robert Svoboda collection of Montana collectibles. The 734lot sale will begin at 8 a.m. PDT. The sale highlights will be the Montana Postal History section with 219-lots of covers and 345-lots of Montana Tokens. Other Montana collectibles will include checks,

scrip, directories, photographs, documents, autographs and mining prospectuses. The theme is heavy on Montana’s mining history, with excellent examples of each collecting genre included in the sale. The past two sales featured strong bidding from Montana and Western collectors across the board. “The timing of the sale is perfect,” said a major collector from the eastern seaboard.

“Everybody is waiting.” The Svoboda collection was formed over several decades by Montana native Robert Svoboda. He meticulously went after every variety of token and each variety of Montana town cancellation on both covers and postcards. The collection sale serves as a Montana catalog of sorts, since there has never been a reference book published on post-Montana Territorial covers and postal markings. Svoboda assembled more than 6,000 different Montana tokens and as many covers

during his collecting years. He passed away several years ago and the collection remained intact until now. The fourth and final sale is slated for the summer. The date has not been determined. Those interested in the sale can see the catalog online through a link by visiting www.fhwac.com or directly through icollector.com. Fred Holabird, president of Holabird’s Western Americana Collections, said a limited number of printed catalogs are available. Interested parties can call 775-851-1859.
