The Michener Art Museum proudly presents “Nakashima Looks: Studio Furniture at the Michener,” an unprecedented collection of modern and contemporary craft furniture curated by renowned artist Mira NakashimaYarnall. Rooted in its deep commitment to George Nakashima’s legacy, the museum collaborates with his daughter, Mira, to pay homage to Bucks County’s rich history of the studio craft movement and the many artisans from the region. Encompassing more than 20 objects, the show includes works from the Michener’s permanent collection by artists such as Paul Evans (1931–87), Jack Larimore (b. 1950), Mark Sfirri (b. 1952) and Robert Whitley (b. 1924), along with loans by Harry Bertoia (1915–78), Wharton Esherick (1887–1970), Sam Maloof (1916–2009) and both generations of the Nakashima family. Astutely aware that the woodworking field has been comprised mostly of men, Mira also felt it important to include work by Noémi Raymond in the exhibition. “Nakashima Looks” includes three works by Wharton Esherick,
founder of the American Studio Furniture movement, representing his idea of wooden furniture as sculpture. Developing independently, George Nakashima focused on architecture-based furniture and used the natural shape of the wood to dictate form, especially highlighted in the “Music Stand” (1985), one of his four works on display. While both influences spread, many of these woodworking craftsmen now being showcased together were reacting against factorymade furniture being produced at the time, often blurring the line between functional furniture and sculpture. However, a few of them eventually worked with Hans and Florence Knoll, selling design rights and helping to shape the future of furniture design in the 20th century. “Founding Michener executive director Bruce Katsiff had the foresight to partner with Mira Nakashima-Yarnall to create the Nakashima Reading Room,” said Dr. Kathleen V. Jameson, the museum’s current executive director. “And now, it is my great privilege to work with Mira on this special exhibition. I was delighted she agreed to help us review our studio craft holdings, establish a roadmap for growth, and renew our commitment to this critically important art. It has been wonderful to work closely with Mira Continued on page 7

In December of 1883, an Arizona dance hall owner named John Heath rode with a posse in pursuit of five outlaws whose robbery-gonewrong had resulted in the death of three men and a pregnant woman. But when the posse lost the trail, there was suspicion that Heath himself had been purposely leading them astray. The five robbers were eventually captured and confessed that Heath was in on the plot. These are Apache scouts near Fort Huachuca, Ariz. Those five were legally hanged. Auction Group will be offering a series of rare, highly collectible photographs by Fly, including his iconic photo of the hanging of John Heath (sometimes spelled Heith); three Fly photographs depicting a striking shot of a group of Apache scouts near Fort Huachuca, Ariz., one of an early view of the fort itself; and another of a large battalion lined up in dress parade at the fort. In addition, there are photos by Willcox, Ariz., territory photographer A. F. Randall, including one of Nachez, son of Cochise, chief of the Chiricahua Apaches, and his wife, and two of Na-buash-i-ta, Medicine Man
of the White Mountain Apaches, among others. The group of photographs was discovered in an old mansion in the small Centre County, Pa., town of Philipsburg, among material from the estate of Walter M. Swoope. The Swoope family were longtime figures in the town and built wealth in both coal mining and banking. Hess Auctions held a two-day auction in November of 2018 on behalf of the estate. Hess Auction Group’s Conestoga Auction Company’s facility is located at 768 Graystone Road, Manheim, Pa. A public preview is scheduled for Friday, April 12, from 2 to 6 p.m. For additional information, call 717-898-7284.

Glenn Miller’s Advertising Sale Delivers The temperature hovered at zero on Jan. 19, a typical winter day in Wisconsin. It had snowed the night before, and the roads were icy and treacherous. For the locals, those things are normal, and it didn’t hinder attendance at Glenn Miller’s large advertising auction at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Bidders also came from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota. A selection of 615 lots of antique and vintage advertising signs, clocks, thermometers, oil cans, and more were sold throughout the all-day sale. A porcelain Mobiloil sign brought $3,600. As collectors, we all are taught that prior ownership of a particular antique by a major collector is significant. It can add value because of a particularly noteworthy provenance. Why? Because the perceived good taste of a prior owner can then rub off on a subsequent one. That being said, provenance can also be a double-edged sword. For some collections, such as Native American art, a great provenance is truly proof of age when the materials themselves offer little clue of age. Thus, a Crow beaded bag that can be traced to an owner at least as far as the 1920s has a better
provenance to a great collection. Until the last decade, I would have said that this history would have really enhanced the value of the piece. However, questions about many related items have come up in the recent past. The questions were serious (as opposed to the armchair quarterbacking of antiques that happens on internet chat rooms) and so most of the items from this collection now stand in potential disgrace. The risk in these blanket attributions of concern over provenance is that not every item owned by someone is automatically fake. There is an old saying that to call something genuine that is a fake is a sin, but a greater sin is to call something fake that is in fact genuine. Provenance is a tool. It is important and vital

chance of being period than an artistically equivalent example without dateable provenance. On the other hand, provenance to certain collectors can actually have a reverse influence. There are a number of Pennsylvania German arts items whose provenance to certain collections makes them immediately suspect. I recall such a piece in a museum collection. It was genuine, but the provenance of the donating owner made it highly suspect to the entire curatorial team. We simply could not get around the prior owner’s love to rework pieces. He did so sometimes to embellish and enhance them in order to add value, while other times he tore things apart and put them back together just to see if they were genuine or not. In both cases, and because his work was so suspect, his provenance was a sure sign of risk and flaw. Recently, I was asked about an object that had a

After the start of World War II, when Mira was just six weeks old, the family was uprooted from their home in Seattle, Wash., and relocated to an internment camp with other American citizens of Japanese ancestry. Antonin Raymond (husband of Noémi Raymond), an architect who had employed George years before while living in Japan and then also back in the United States, petitioned for the release of

the Nakashima family, ensuring employment on his chicken farm in New Hope, Pa. Although he had many accolades, including degrees from the University of Washington and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and practiced as an architect for several years, George began mastering the art of woodworking while working on the farm. He believed trees had souls and saw importance in highlighting the natural forms of the tree in his customdesigned functional furniture. Following completion of architecture degrees from Harvard University and Waseda University in Tokyo, Mira Nakashima returned to work in her father’s studio in 1970. She

Scott Antique Markets is breaking the mold on what it means to live with and enjoy antiques. Shoppers and vendors alike are getting younger and younger at Scott’s, making it the perfect place to find new friends as well as treasures. There is no lack of love for these beautiful pieces amongst the under 40 crowd at the Scott shows, as many young women look to build upon their family heirlooms. This has eased the fears of vendors, show promoters, and more over the last decade. “This market is one of the best in the world, if not the very best,” said one exhibitor during the February Scott’s show in Atlanta, Ga. “It’s not only inspirational to share interest with baby boomers like myself, but especially with the younger groups of shoppers.” An uptick in the interest from younger customers can be partially attributed to shoppers wanting to go back to a time where furniture was made to last. They want the toys of their generation to be in the hands of their children. They want cast-iron pieces for their kitchens that tell the same stories their grandmothers’ pieces did. New and well-established young designers from all over the country also hit the markets every month looking to bring a bit of nostalgia back to what they design for their clients, and with good reason. According to the American Society of Interior Designers, Georgia chapter, Atlanta was named the fourth largest metro area for interior designers in the nation and Scott Antique Markets holds the title as sixth largest interior design market in the nation. “Over the last two decades, our antique inventory in the 3,500 exhibitor booths has been complemented with great decorator items,” said show owner Don Scott. “The market has turned into a monthly decorator shopping frenzy when it opens because of all the great antiques and decorator items. Massive crowds of young people, including many decorators, supply décor to homes all over the world from right here in Atlanta.” Scott Antique Markets is a special place to spend the weekend once a month for antiquarians, from the food, to the facilities, to the friendly atmosphere. “Credit must be given to everyone, especially the exhibitors that work hard to find so many great treasures, our employees, advertising staff, show and expo workers and many more,” said Scott. “We are fortunate to have the

long overdue, this project will enable us to re-present and reinterpret our extensive holdings of Chinese art for the benefit of our visitors and will also serve as the basis for a new, purpose-built curriculum taught by our educators. These efforts will create relevance, deepen understanding, and renew our visitors’ appreciation for different cultures and artistic traditions around the world,” said Timothy Rub, the George D. Select windows will be enclosed, improving conditions for the display of lightsensitive textiles and paintings not previously exhibitable in these galleries, while new lighting will enhance the viewing experience. The museum’s exhibition team is designing purpose-built casework, some equipped with internal lighting that will dramatically improve viewing clarity. These changes will allow for greater

The Philadelphia Museum of Art will soon begin the first comprehensive renovation and reinstallation of its galleries of Chinese art in many decades. This initiative will enable its staff to reimagine the presentation of this important part of the museum’s collection and interpret it in new ways for the benefit of visitors. This represents the next step in an ongoing series of reinstallations of the museum’s collection that began with the Rodin Museum in 2012 and continued with the renovation of its galleries of South Asian art in 2016. Six galleries in the wing of the museum devoted to Asian art will close for close to a year. “This once-in-a-generation project follows the success of our new galleries of South Asian art and is proceeding in tandem with the implementation of the next phase of our Facilities Master Plan. It will transform the experience of one of the most important, but still underappreciated parts of our collection. In addition to renovating these galleries, a step that is

Record-Setting Original Comic Art, Toys And Historic Americana Join Forces To Generate $1.26 Million At Hake’s Rob Liefeld’s Pen-And-Ink Art From Marvel’s New Mutants #98 Sells For $40,380 Fresh-to-market original comic book art spurred a fan frenzy at Hake’s March 13 and 14 auction and produced a $1.26 million result, with new auction records set by several prize entries. Predicted to finish well in the money, Rob Liefeld’s original pen-and-ink art for Page 27 of New Mutants #98, published by Marvel in February 1991, did not disappoint. It swept past its $20,000-$35,000 estimate to settle at $40,380, making it the auction’s top lot. “The artboard is from the issue that introduced Deadpool, the wildly popular antihero who went on to star in countless comics, video games and films,” said Hake’s president Alex Winter. “Original page art from Issue 98 is especially rare if it actually depicts Deadpool, which was the case with the page art we sold, because he appears on only seven pages in that issue.” The artwork had been held privately since shortly after the issue’s publication and had never before been offered for public sale.
Frank Quitely’s original cover art for All-Star Superman #6 (DC Comics), from a series that ran from November 2005 through October 2008, sold for $15,575, an auction record for any original Quitely art. The poignant scene depicts Superman standing at the gravestone of his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, with his loyal canine companion Krypto beside him. Next up was the 11-by-17inch original art for Page 33 of Sandman Vol. 2, #14 (DC Vertigo, March 1990), penciled by Mike Dringenberg and inked by Malcolm Jones III. Few Sandman pages have appeared for public sale, and the $14,280 auction-record price paid for the early sevenpanel page validated the timelessness and enduring popularity of the series. Comic books held steady, with particular interest in Golden and Silver Age issues

swing. A fantastic panoramic photo taken prior to Game 5 of the first “Negro League World Series” of October 1924, depicting 42 players (including eight future Hall of Famers), managers and owners, retired at $23,365. Also, a treasure trove of 150 Cracker Jack collector cards produced in 191415 was offered, including the elusive “Shoeless” Joe Jackson card. Measuring only 2.25-by-3 inches, it set a world auction record for an example of its type (PSA Good 2 condition), knocking it out of the park at $18,345.
Written bids are currently being accepted through Monday, April 8. Also available in this sale is a 1992 portfolio of 19 photographs by Howard Katz. Keystone Auctions is
located at 218 E. Market St. in downtown York, Pa. To preview the items, readers may call 717-755-8954. For additional information, readers may visit www.auctionsbykeystone.com.
Historical and political Americana flew high, especially an important 1860 “For President, Abram [sic.] Lincoln – For Vice President, Hannibal Hamlin” 35-star parade flag. “This flag descended through successive generations of a Connecticut family, then went into a private collection, where it remained for 50 years. We were proud to have been chosen to offer it for public sale for the first time,” said Winter. It realized $19,210. Political buttons were hotly pursued, including an iconic 1940 Wendell Willkie/FDR “Y’r Out At Third” baseball-theme button, $9,735, and a button showing Harry
Truman’s face on an 8-ball, a reference to his being “behind the 8-ball” as he headed into the 1948 presidential race, $9,475. A top Kennedy keepsake, a “Kennedy Election Night Staff” button of a type worn by staffers to gain access to the Hyannisport family compound on election day in 1960, came with provenance from the archive of Helen Lempart, who was an executive secretary in JFK’s inner circle. It sold for $9,410. All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of 18-percent buyer’s premium. In 1975, six paintings by Andrew Wyeth, done in 1967, were donated to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pa. The six are known as the Siri Erickson collection and include “Siri,” “Indian Summer,” “The Virgin,” “The Sauna,” “Black Water” and “Seabed.” These paintings came about after Andrew Wyeth asked George Erickson and his wife, his neighbors in Maine, if he could do a portrait of their daughter Siri on the family’s farm. A limited edition of 200 hand-signed prints of this collection was made by the museum and sold in 1980. Edition #13 was the first set made available to the public after the first 12 went to board members of the museum. Edition #13 has been in the original owner’s possession since 1980, and Keystone Auctions of York, Pa., is holding a special closed sealed bid sale of this edition.
