Both were record prices for Lou Gehrig Goudey cards for those years, and both had JSA certificates. The auction featured a great selection of sports and non-sports cards, including graded tobacco cards, autographed diamond stars, more Goudey cards, and complete sets of Allen and Ginter N2 cards. Autographed baseballs were also offered. Single signed balls by Hall of Famers Cy Young and Jimmy Foxx went for $21,850 and $24,725, respectively. These, too, had JSA certificates. course, there are super rare Wades that command lots of money, but there are equally large numbers that sell for $1 or $2 and that can be found in nearly every antiques mall. So the game is afoot, first to find Wades, and second to try and remember which ones you already have. It’s a great way to begin a collection.

I use a similar analogy with the booming market in World War II items. I had a friend who started collecting WWII pilot items with his stepson. While it was great to see their interest, the challenge was they wanted the top-line stuff and so ended up buying lots of framed reproductions. I am not opposed to buying clearly marked repros, but I do get concerned when they are being sold as real or as some kind of investment. The reality is that they could collect patches, insignia, dress uniforms and the like for WWII

talking about under $20 per item. So building upon the excitement of a movie, book, and visit to Gettysburg could be the purchase of an original photograph of a Civil War soldier. Sure the named, unit identified, gun-holding photographs bring tons of money. I am talking about the unidentified and unnamed photos of single soldiers posing perhaps with their sweethearts before leaving for the war. They are very reasonable (I routinely buy them on average for $20), and they are a great way to start a collection.

I have frequently written on this topic, but I think it is really important to keep revisiting this as something to consider in continuing the collecting of antiques. Both my daughters have grown up in a house full of antiques and spending time at the flea markets. My oldest clearly has the bug, while for the youngest, at age 8, the jury is still out. In getting kids to begin to collect, I think there are two critical elements to consider. First is that the link with history has to be made early on. Having worked in the field of history education, I think as parents (or grandparents or uncles/aunts, etc.) that we
need to pick up the ball of making history fun and exciting. It need not be boring and pedantic. Make it about identity and place and people. A great example of this is to have them watch the movie “Gettysburg and then go to the battlefield and walk the areas from the movie and maybe read the book, “The Killer Angels. Now, I know that the Civil War buffs out there are going to start writing letters immediately and pointing out what mistakes there are in the movie or the book. The flip side is that bringing a child into a super deep dive into the minutiae of military history will probably be a turnoff. Instead, we want to build upon curiosity. Walking the child up to the edge and helping them to step off into thinking about learning about the past. To use the Civil War analogy, there are a huge number of military items out there relating to the Civil War that are very affordable, and I am

the receiver depicts two scenes, both of which are directed to the marketing of the Winchester Repeating Rifle, particularly for hunting tigers. On one side of the receiver is a happy, satisfied customer with a Winchester rifle in hand and dead tigers. On the opposite side of the receiver is a man with an empty single shot musket being pursued by an angry tiger. This outstanding Winchester, at one time in the David Crocker collection and prior to that the Norm Flayderman collection in the 1970s, carries a presale estimate of $75,000-$125,000. The next Winchester comes all the way from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lot #1034 is a rare John Ulrich M1873 1 of 1,000. Only two of these were ever made with gold and nickel finish. This one was once the property of noted Argentine businessman Don Eduardo Casey and consigned by an ancestor. Casey was an avid horseman and a friend of Buffalo Bill Cody. It is believed that Cody inspired him to acquire this prized rifle. Over the years, the gun has been refreshed, but the extraordinary engraved scene features that of a buffalo and a leaping elk. It is estimated at $75,000$125,000. Lot #1061 is a fine semi-deluxe special order Model 86 cal. 50 Express. This gun is estimated at $40,000$65,000. Lot #1129 is a Colt SA Army, SN 5773—the only U.S. government documented, complete and original Colt SA Army firearm proven to have been used by one of Custer’s men in the battle. As such, it is a great American historical treasure.
The gun is documented by Captain Benteen (who survived the battle) as having been used at Little Bighorn, and when he turned it over to the Ordinance Department, he wrote, “rendered unserviceable in action against hostile Indians at the Battle of Little Bighorn, M.T. on the 25th & 26th of June, 1876.” It

at one time was in the famous Robert Q. Sutherland collection. It comes to the auction bearing an estimate of $15,000-$25,000. Lot #1173 is a highly embellished Edward Bohlin special model saddle with diamond and gold overlay bridle and halter. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000. Continued on page 14
