FBI Reunited Owner Michael Shaw With His Treasure From

“The Wizard Of Oz” During Ceremony At The Judy Garland Museum

During a recent private ceremony at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minn., collector Michael Shaw was reunited with his pair of ruby slippers stolen from the museum in the summer of 2005. “It’s like welcoming back an old friend I haven’t seen in years,” said a teary-eyed Shaw as he stood beside the slippers and the federal agents and local authorities who spent almost two decades tracking down the Technicolor treasures from the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.” For the moment, at least, there was no place like home.

But the reunion was brief because immediately following that ceremony in Garland’s childhood home, Shaw turned over the slippers to Heritage Auctions, with which he has consigned them, known as “The Traveling Shoes” because of their long, storied exhibition history. Thanks to their 2018 recovery by the FBI and Shaw’s decision to part with the historic pair, their journey is not yet over.

Later this year, Heritage will take Dorothy’s ruby slippers on an international tour, including stops in Los Angeles, New York, London and Tokyo. Heritage will then offer the ruby slippers at auction in December.

“You cannot overstate the importance of Dorothy’s ruby slippers: They are the most important prop in Hollywood history,” says

Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena. “This pair is precious as it hails from the legendary collection of Michael Shaw, and we are honored he has partnered with Heritage. As TCM host Ben Mankiewicz once said, these slippers ‘symbolize hope,’ and we’re thrilled they will journey down the yellow brick road to the auction block to a new home.”

Gilbert Adrian, the chief costume designer at MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, created the ruby slippers for Victor Fleming’s big-screen adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel (the magic slippers were silver in the book). Only four pairs are known to have survived. Another pair remains a popular attraction at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where, the museum once noted, “smudges on the heavy glass vitrine must be routinely cleaned” because of the millions who “stand transfixed before them” each year.

But as Forbes noted in 2008, Shaw’s pair “was of higher quality than the pair which now resides in the Smithsonian” because Shaw owned the pair used for close-up shots when Dorothy clicked her heels.

Shaw, a former child actor once under contract to MGM, acquired his pair from Kent Warner, a Hollywood costumer who discovered them and their siblings in

an MGM warehouse shortly before the famous May 1970 auction that essentially brought down the curtain on Hollywood’s Golden Age. Shaw told The Los Angeles Times in 1988 that when Warner brought him the ruby slippers, “I was so thrilled I literally started crying”. I was just thrilled to pieces. I told him that if I never owned another possession, I’d be happy.”

Shaw eventually amassed an impressive collection of movie memories and traveled them around the country as part of a show called “Hollywood on Tour.”

In 2005, the Judy Garland Museum borrowed Shaw’s “traveling pair” for its annual Judy Garland Festival and what should have been a 10-week visit. But

on Aug. 28, someone slipped into Garland’s childhood home, shattered the plexiglass case holding the slippers and stole them, leaving behind only a single red sequin. “It’s the worst nightmare for me,” Shaw said at the time, and the case quickly went cold despite a million-dollar reward.

In July 2018, after Shaw and investigators feared the slippers had disappeared forever, the FBI and Grand Rapids Police Department recovered the pair during a sting operation. The FBI took the slippers to the Smithsonian, where conservators compared them to the museum’s pair donated in 1979. The FBI later put out a statement: “Examination of

Speciality Tool And Firearms Sale Held By Haar’s Auction

Haar’s Auction in Dillsburg, Pa., held a tool and gun sale on March 22 with a crowd of over 200 registered bidders. There was quite a bit of interest in a 1973 Suzuki 185 CC, one owner and 2,000 miles, and it brought $2,600. Another top item generating bidder interest was a Ford garden tractor from the 1960s, realizing $850.

Two Winchester rifles with original boxes sold for $675 and $975. Bidding continued for unique garden statues/ items, a nice selection of tools, guns, ammo, and fishing items. Haar’s has been in business since 1934 and is now operated by the third generation. They hold weekly auctions on Monday evenings. For more information, visit www.haars.com.

Kyle Family Farm Will Host Event

The Kyle Family Farm located in East Windsor, N.J., hosts a variety of events each year along with running a year-round farmer’s market and bake shop seven days a week. Owned by Kevin and Sharon Kyle, the farm has been growing fresh produce since 2003. It was bought from the state under the Farmland Preservation Program. Aside from the market, the events include fall festivities such as pumpkin picking, hayrides, a corn maze, and haunted attractions. The fruit and produce grown ranges from strawberries and asparagus in the late spring and early summer, to staples such as corn, tomatoes, and melons, then broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage in the fall. Another venue for selling is the Englishtown Flea Market. A kitchen was added to a renovated building on the farm for market space so baked goods could be added to the offerings.

The Kyles have managed the New Jersey Antique Bottle Club Show and Sale for eight years. It used to be held at the Manville VFW. For the past three years, the annual show has taken place outdoors on the Kyle Farm. Since the change in venue, the group has seen attendance and interest in vendors grow. Dealers travel from around the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, and New England to set up and shop.

In 2022, the indoor show returned to Manville, but the outdoor show continued. This year, the show taking place on Saturday, June 8, aims to attract more customers and vendors by allowing more antiques in addition to the traditional bottle collections and pottery the group’s show is

A Painted Sewer Tile Figure Of A Cat Recently Found In Southern New Jersey

The first French and English homes began to utilize iron doorstops in a bevy of shapes in the early 19th century. Decorative doorstops were not widely used in American homes until after the American Civil War, whereas most post-Civil War doorstops were small and lightweight. Decorative iron doorstops came into their own in the United States in the 1920s, and they remained very popular through the early 1940s,

when heavy metal rationing began during WWII.

Among the companies that were producing iron doorstops in America was the Hubley Manufacturing Company, which was incorporated in 1894 in Lancaster, Pa., by John Hubley. The company’s early production consisted of many cast-iron toys, including various horse-drawn vehicles, guns, and household objects, such as doorstops and bookends. Hubley was one of the most prolific doorstop makers of their time. Their doorstops

are known for color and design, making them one of the most sought-after makers of doorstops. In 1948, Hubley sold their doorstop molds to John Wright, and that business is still reproducing doorstops today.

Interestingly, though, before iron doorstops really became the norm in American household fashion in the 1900s, some pottery manufacturers were producing an assortment of shapes in the latter part of the 1800s. The most iconic example is perhaps a multi-glazed red earthenware lamb doorstop that is attributed to J. Eberly & Company in Strasburg, Va., ca. 1890, although this shape was also produced with a slip washed glaze that is white in color, as well as other lambs that were produced without a glaze. This form is also

used as a doorstop, but it may also have been merely a decorative object, likely for a mantel.

However, these types of clay doorstops were unquestionably most abundant with stoneware and sewer tile manufacturers located in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and in the Midwest in the late19th and early 20th century, where these objects were also sometimes salt-glazed. The most popular forms were seated spaniels that were usually influenced by shapes manufactured in England, as well as recumbent lions. The fact that the vast majority of the American-made pottery doorstops that exist today were produced out of stoneware or sewer tile, as opposed to red earthenware, is not a surprise either, seeing

cited in the company’s trade cards and price lists from the late 1880s and early 1890s, where they are described as “Lambs for Door Stops, per dozen, 3.00.” In some cases, these price lists also referred to them as “fancy door stops.”

Furthermore, doorstops were also produced out of glazed red earthenware made in Pennsylvania in the late 19th century, where some of the known forms include heavily impressed decorated slabs of clay somewhat resembling bricks with glazes and end-of -the-day type objects. Additionally, a few months ago my niece, Alexis, and I found a considerably larger sized gold painted 19th century red earthenware figure of a recumbent spaniel that I suspect was made in the Mid-Atlantic region. It also does not appear to have been molded, and instead, it seems to have been sculpted by hand. It may have been

that the higher-fired clays were more suitable for the use and wear that a doorstop would see; red earthenware was lower-fired and less-durable for this type of use.

Another notable characteristic with some of the stoneware doorstops made in America is the use of a twotone Bristol glaze, a glazing technique that was developed in Bristol, England, in 1835 and soon afterwards was used by American potters. In fact, it is sometimes called “double glazed ware” because the two-tone effect required dipping the object into the glaze twice. Bristol glazess in the United States are often found with some pottery made in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and parts of the Midwest. But Ohio was probably the most prevalent location in America for the production of Bristol glazes, based on the influx of potters (some of whom came from England) in the state during the late 1800s.

Nevertheless, I came across a sewer tile doorstop earlier this year that really intrigued my interest, largely because I have never seen anything like it before. The doorstop is in the shape of a recumbent cat, although this is a style of cat that I have not previously seen in sewer tile, which crosses over into the realm of American folk art. Additionally, the cat was recently found in southern New Jersey, but there is no indication that this is where it was made, probably in the early 1900s.

But what is also striking about this object is the fact that it is painted with colors that resemble cast-iron toys, banks and doorstops made at places like the Hubley Manufacturing Company. This is not an anomaly either, where

workers at sewer tile factories are known to have copied cast-iron forms, such as frogs and seated cats, but this object is more skillfully made than a lot of the sewer tile figures that exist today. It is the use of the paint colors that really seem to indicate that whoever made this object appears (to me) to have been trying to imitate cast-iron production.

The only difference I can see in the way this cat was painted when compared to period American-made castiron objects is that a base coat was not applied. With cast-iron, the base coat was usually white, although some foundries used a different color. The only purpose of this overcoat was to protect the cast-iron from rusting.

Interestingly, this near fine example is inscribed and signed by Houdini, possibly to his brother, Leo Weiss, M.D. The inscription reads, in full: “To my real Pal / Doc / with best wishes

The 14-carat gold hunter style case is engraved throughout and hallmarked the Brooklyn Watch Case Co. Its Stull-style mechanism is signed and dated by the maker, Thomas B. Freed, 1986. According to Potter & Potter’s experts, this is a “singularly spectacular piece of magical apparatus.”

A Fantastic Orange Tree automaton, estimated at $15,000-$25,000, was made in Los Angeles, Calif., by John Gaughan and Associates around 1989. It is based on the legacy 19th-century illusion by Robert-Houdin and accompanied by a manufacturer’s booklet tracing the history of its classic and breathtaking effect. Nostalgia’s Effect On The Long Forgotten VHS Movie

If we were to step into my magical, stylish, time traveling DeLorean and go back to the year 1989, a few things would be very apparent as soon as we stepped out of the car. Texting, let alone social media, was not yet a thing, the World Wide Web was just created that same year (and still in its infancy), and a movie rental store was readily available in every town and city in America.

It is the last point I wish to focus on. By 1989, there were close to 30,000 movie rental stores operating in the United States alone. Most of those stores were part of mega chains like Hollywood Video and Blockbuster Video that would dominate the home movie rental market for almost the next two decades.

Few could have predicted the sad demise of the neighborhood movie rental store back then. Regardless, as to whether or not you lived in a bustling metropolis or a rural area, the local movie rental shop was the pulse of the neighborhood on any Friday or Saturday night. I fondly remember my local Blockbuster Video being one of the busiest places at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night.

And to anyone who grew up in the 1980s, 1990s or even the very early 2000s, movie rental stores and the experiences they brought us are embedded in our memories. With Netflix coming into the marketplace in 1997 offering DVD movie rentals by mail with no late fees and free shipping, slowly but surely movie rental shops were made obsolete, almost as fast as the transition from bulky VHS cassettes to shiny DVDs. By the time Blockbuster Video shuttered its retail stores in 2014, Netflix was already busy ensuring movies could be streamed from the comfort of our own homes. No more late night drives to the local video rental shop or forgetting to return the movie the next day. It was now available online with just the click of a button, and in theory this sounded great, until it

no longer was. You see, Netflix had pulled the proverbial wool over their customers’ eyes by telling them online streaming was all they needed. This was the start of the great migration from cable television and physical media to the brave new digital world of online streaming, a world that promised convenience and choice and seemed so good in theory. But much like the movie “The Matrix,” reality is not always what it seems.

By 2016, it was clear that Netflix was the premier choice for watching movies and television shows without having to subscribe to cable television or satellite TV. Netflix was affordable and delivered on making excellent original content readily available along with some hit movies, and therein lies the problem. Certain movies, even wellknown blockbuster movies, would never make it to Netflix or any other streaming platform, for that matter.

Movie production companies that had a back catalog of popular films realized the value in their holdings and set out to create their own streaming platforms. If consumers wanted more choices to view their favorite movies from the comfort of their own living rooms, they would have

to subscribe to these other streaming platforms, and there was still a chance that your favorite movie wasn’t available on them. Perhaps your favorite movie wasn’t on Netflix, but maybe it was on Hulu, or perhaps Paramount. This meant that as a consumer you had to subscribe to multiple streaming platforms to be able to stream

Pook & Pook To Hold Two-Day Americana and International Auction Sale Will Be

An Americana and International sale at Pook & Pook in Downingtown, Pa., is set for Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19. It will offer one of the company’s broadest assortments of antiques and art to date, everything from antiquities to Amish quilts, English delft chargers to Chinese Export platters, stoneware to redware, Gothic brass candlesticks to American silver, pewter, and iron, fraktur to modern art, early American glass to Native American objects. The second day is devoted nearly entirely to several international collections, including that of Robert S. Miller.

Always strong in folk art, the auction features a spread-wing eagle attributed to Wilhelm Schimmel, a fine cigar store Indian, and a massive Noah’s Ark on a custom shelf with 18 feet of switchback ramp on which 194 animals can be lined up to board. Elaborately carved Northern European mangle boards, tramp art frames, an excellent miniature painted stool and miniature blanket chest, Bucher boxes, a Compass Artist dome lid box, and saffron cups by Joseph Lehn compete for attention. Fraktur features rare works from Mahantango Township, Schuylkill County, and an example by the Springing Deer Artist from the Shelley collection.

The furniture category has Philadelphia Chippendale tables, Pennsylvania William and Mary high chests, a New England Queen Anne tiger maple high chest, a large New Jersey or Pennsylvania William & Mary walnut gate leg dining table, and a pair of Boston Queen Anne dining chairs. Queen Anne dining chair is in an excellent state of preservation and has descended in the family. Another standout is a Pennsylvania walnut chest-on-frame, with line and fan inlays, dated 1791 and signed. The headline furniture item is the William Barch, Lancaster, Pa., Chippendale carved walnut deskand-bookcase, signed by cabinetmaker William Dennis and dated 1789. Colorful painted furniture includes a dower chest from Centre County and a painted chest of drawers. Tall case clocks will be led by an important Philadelphia Chippendale walnut clock with eight-day works signed “Jacob Godshalk Philadelphia.” A large swell-bodied copper rooster, a full-bodied Cushing & White running horse, and a gilt copper bull are a few of the weathervanes offered.

From an Aspen, Colo., collection comes an assortment of antique wrought iron. Quality baseball memorabilia always hits a home run. This sale presents a scarce McLoughlin Bros. “The World’s Game of Base Ball,” copyright 1889.

The influence of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts is seen in works by artists such as John McCoy II, Philip Jamison Jr., Antonio Martino, Seymour Remenick, Ezio Martinelli, and Walter Baum.

Other featured lots include Philadelphia artists Robert Conover and Earl Horter. Two 1930s oil-on-canvas paintings for the covers of “American Legion” magazine depict

Delaware Train Show Set Back-To-Back With April Fools Toy Show

Two Different Shows Will Be Held April 27 And 28

On Saturday, April 27, the Delaware Train Show will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nur Shrine Center, Route 13 / 198 South DuPont Highway, New Castle, Del. Admission will be $5, and children under the age of 12 will be admitted free of charge. There will be a $10 early buyers admission at 8 a.m. The train show will feature over 150 tables of trains, accessories, slot cars and some toys. Two Showcase Displays Announced For Carlisle GM Nationals Car Show

Event Takes Place June 21 And 22

There’s a level of diversity that’s on display at the annual Carlisle GM Nationals car show. In fact, with a multitude of name plates falling under the General Motors umbrella in 2024, the show cars (and trucks) on display represent the past, present, and future of the brand. This year’s event, Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, at the Carlisle, Pa., Fairgrounds, aims to welcome nearly 1,000 vehicles to the National Parts Depot Showfield and, along the way, highlight some special displays too.

A second coat of paint was then applied to the front of doorstops and other types of cast iron objects, whereas this painted design incorporated various colors. The person applying the paint used tubes of oil paint or

enamel (if a shiny surface was desired), and each different color was applied separately and then allowed to dry. This seems to be the same technique that was also used on the sewer tile cat. For detail, see the photos.

The early 20th-century sewer tile doorstop figure of a recumbent cat was recently discovered in southern New Jersey. The painted decoration appears to have been applied to imitate cast-iron objects made in America from the late 1890s to the early 1940s.

Planting Time: Fascinating Figural Planters

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century

Spring is here (at last!).

Time to break out the spades and break in those new gardening gloves. Time to ferret out that trowel from wherever you stashed it last fall. Yes, time’s a-wasting, and Mother Earth is waiting!

That is, she’s waiting if

you actually have a place to plant a garden. Or if you have a green thumb. Preferably both. If not, there are remedies besides artificial greenery: indoor ceramic planters! Not just your traditional bowls and rectangles, these are figural planters, which came into their own in the 1940s and ‘50s. Guaranteed rays of decorative sunshine, figural planters turn any environment into a garden party.

Lifting non-green-thumbers out of their doldrums was probably not the first consideration of the artisans who created these planters. During the early years of the 20th century, America had relied on overseas imports for affordable decorative accents. World

War II changed all that. Imports were unavailable for the duration, and inexpensive home decor items (for instance, planters) needed to be home-grown.

Ceramic designers of the WWII years could, quite literally, be called “designing women.” With much of the male population otherwise occupied overseas, female designers surged to the forefront. California alone saw the rise of such talents as Kaye (aka “Kaye of Hollywood”), Yona Lippin, Betty Lou Nichols, Florence Ward (Florence Ceramics), and Jimmie Lee Stewart of deLee Art. But when it came to figurines, the most prolific of them all was Hedi Schoop.

A Swiss emigre, Schoop successfully translated her early work with plaster dolls to the ceramic medium. Acclaimed as “very whimsical and smart,” her figurines won fans due to their flowing lines, eye-catching glazes, and “in-motion” poses. Schoop also served

from store shelves to home shelves, as consumers snapped them up. Buoyed by the response, designers expanded their inventory themes. Soon joining the

Back in 1989, we didn’t have this problem. If the movie was available to rent, for just a few dollars, you could most likely rent it at any local video store. This is an excellent example as to how the promise of new technology and convenience is not always for the best. I am not, however, suggesting that a video rental store would survive in the year 2024, regardless of how much you loved the 2020 documentary, “The Last Blockbuster,” which tells the story of the last Blockbuster Video store located in Bend, Oregon, that is still open today. The location has become a symbol of nostalgia and still has a loyal following, mainly from weary travelers who cannot believe that a Blockbuster Video store is still open.

Whether or not someone wants to join in the fun and attempt to open their own video rental store today and see if the concept can still work is entirely up to them. I would strongly caution against it, but, despite the rise in online streaming platforms and the death of movie rental stores, interest in vintage VHS and DVD movies is rapidly increasing. I have discussed the impact of third-party grading playing a pivotal role in this market in previous articles,

but one of the reasons that those old movies (especially if factory sealed) are becoming treasured collectibles is due to the nostalgia a lot of us have of visiting our favorite movie rental store just a few decades ago. Now some of those movies can be seen selling for a tidy sum on the secondary market. If you have a movie that is quite desirable and not readily available in other formats or easily available on a streaming platform, be sure to check secondary market prices on eBay and other online auction sites before throwing them away or putting them out with the yearly yard sale stuff.

That said, VHS movies age horribly if they were not stored properly, so it is advised to test the movies before attempting to sell them (and good luck finding a good working VCR if you don’t already own one). Also, know that most used VHS movies are not worth all that much. The real money comes in having either a very rare and sought after movie or something in pristine, factorysealed condition. Unfortunately, most of us didn’t save original VHS movies in factory-sealed condition. This is one reason why they fetch such high prices at auction. We watched them and rewatched them over and over again like they were intended. That’s how nostalgia works, and that is why there is a small niche but stable secondary market

Printed ca. 1924, the linen-backed, eight-sheet lithographed poster was printed in Cleveland, Ohio, by Otis Litho. and measures 109-by89 inches. It advertises a stunt that Houdini would never perform, his escape from a coffin buried under mounds of heavy earth. It is decorated with Houdini’s head floating above an Egyptian scene featuring the Sphinx.

“The name “Houdini” remains the strongest and most resonant of all magicians, past or present. We’re thrilled to offer some true rarities from his singular career in this sale. Another strong specialty for Pook & Pook is Native American Indian art and antiques. Historical items descended in the family of the Hon. Lewis V. Bogy, Commissioner of Indian Affairs under President Andrew Johnson, 1866-67, lead the category with moccasins and beadwork, kachina dolls, photographs, and two portraits in oils of Native American dignitaries. Items from the collection of Douglas and Janet Connor of Aspen, Colo., include Hopi dolls, Acoma pottery, Apache baskets, and Navajo and Pueblo jewelry.

The second day of the sale features the previously mentioned Robert S. Miller collection. Over 30 lots feature Tudor, English trumpet, Flemish Gothic, Nuremberg, Heemskerk, Spanish capstan, Queen Anne and other early candlesticks. Brass wares include a Richard Lee

Jr. strainer, as well as a collection of 14 brass tinder lighters.

Early American glass has evolved into another strong category for Pook & Pook. The Miller collection offers many 19th-century blown threemold examples including a rare miniature cobalt glass creamer. The collection of glass hat whimsies is expected to get attention. Ranging from the rare to the extremely rare, they include an olive-green bottle glass hat with George McKearin provenance and a purple-cobalt example that is one of only three recorded examples.

Miller also collected early American silver with a focus on the silversmiths of Newburyport, Mass. There are many chargers and plates produced by many generations of the Moulton family. Newburyport silversmiths Jonathan Stickney, Thomas Foster, and Theophilis Bradbury are also represented. The English silversmith Eley & Fearn was another interest of Miller; included is a flatware service, ca. 1800-01, and many individual pieces.

Miller had a lifelong passion for English delftware.

Collecting around the world and across six decades, he amassed an extraordinary trove. Pook & Pook has carefully organized rare and precious white-glazed salts, including an important “Curles” master salt, equally rare plates depicting the Crucifixion and the Ascension, sack bottles, fuddling cups, puzzle jugs, pill slabs, and covered jars into over 100 lots of delftware. Chargers include royal portraits, Adam and Eve, pomegranate, tulip, and a cat with mouse. Plates include Merry Man, ballooning, and bianco sopra bianco examples that range from Bristol to London, Scotland, and Dublin.

Rounding out the Miller collection are many Ithaca, N.Y., stoneware crocks, and German bellarmine and English Fulham jugs, Chinese export porcelains, and a Massachusetts Chippendale cherry tall case clock signed “Saml. Mulliken Newburyport, 1780.”

Designers once again obliged, and released accompanying pieces (candlesticks, soap dishes, bowls, ashtrays, et al), in colors and designs that complemented the original figurines. Most popular, though, were figurals that did double duty, such as wall pockets and “lady head vases” with openings intended to hold a small

Continued from page 11 spray of flowers. At the very top of the double-duty list: figural planters. No need now for extra pieces such as bowls or ashtrays. Here, the secondary use was built-in. It was a figurine. It was a planter. It was a figural planter! Even better, the “useful” part flowed directly from the figurine design. Now, those peasant girls by Hedi, Kaye, and Yona carried empty buckets, pails, or baskets waiting to be filled with greenery. Some

held out open aprons waiting to overflow with the flowers you’d supply, or cradled their arms in anticipation of the floral bouquets that would soon fill them. Exotic Asian figurines held oversize open fans, sleepy babies curled up next to open crescent moons, and elegant ladies lounged against opentop tree stumps or columns. There were even the occasional oddities such as the Betty Lou Nichols “Peasant” couple “Fritz and Anna,” with Fritz’s beer keg serving as a planter, or the clown (by an unnamed designer) waiting for a cactus to grace the back of his baggy pants.

Whether the blossoms you plant are real or plastic, vintage figural planters make attractive containers for mini-gardens. And, since the majority sell for well under $100, the prices are equally attractive. You might say it’s a collecting hobby that just sort of grows on you.

Federal authorities unveiled Shaw’s recovered slippers during a media conference in September 2018. But it would take another five years for the public to discover who’d stolen them.

On May 16, 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Terry Martin for stealing “an object of cultural heritage” from the museum. He was also hit with one count of theft of a major artwork. Five months later, Martin pleaded guilty. Shortly before sentencing last month, Martin told the court he’d never even seen “The Wizard of Oz” and insisted he’d stolen the shoes only because he thought the sequins were genuine rubies. Unable to sell them on the black market, Martin said he ditched the slippers with someone who had recruited him for the job.

Although the investigation remains active, federal agents were finally able to return the ruby slippers to Shaw on Feb. 1, 2024, after which they were presented to Heritage’s Brian Chanes, senior director in Hollywood and Entertainment,

“It was incredibly rewarding and fitting to see Mr. Shaw reunited with the ruby slippers at Judy Garland’s home, accompanied by his friends on the museum staff,” said Special Agent Christopher Dudley. “It is a privilege for the FBI and our Art Crime Team to work alongside law enforcement partners who truly value the importance of protecting our nation’s cultural heritage.”

Before year’s end, the shoes will once again dazzle and delight crowds around the world before stepping up to the auction block.

“This is a day that is years in the making, a real-life Hollywood ending,” said Maddalena. “It took an ensemble cast of law enforcement professionals giving the performance of a lifetime, and their coordination, cooperation and commitment restored the ruby slippers to their rightful owner. As we all look forward to the next chapter in their storied history, to their journey across the auction block, we are reminded of what these legendary objects are and what they represent: an iconic piece of our collective history, an enduring symbol of the magic of storytelling and an ever-shimmering reminder that dreams are best in Technicolor.”
