This Peter Sculthorpe signed watercolor “Winter in Berks County” sold for $33,000. Alderfer Auction broke auction records for the Chester County artist Peter Sculthorpe with his signed watercolor “Winter in Berks County” selling for $33,000 during its singleowner estate collection from the mainline sale held March 20. Sculthorpe is well-known for his wintery landscapes; “Belted Galloway” and “The Smell of Snow” sold for $15,600 and $14,400, respectively. As his paintings were impressive in size, locality, and simplicity, it
was the perfect complement to the auction. Also, a worthy mention was the signed and dated 1886 Edmund Darch Lewis painting that retained its Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts label. This work sported a $22,800 price realized. As the regional artwork from mainline estate attracted a local audience, one particular item brought international attention. It contained too many “floaters” in terms of both dating and authenticity to admit that a firm, unequivocal, authentic oeuvre had been established, to quote the eminent art historian Ronald Pickvance. Now, almost 50 years later, one can say that slowly but surely, real progress is being made in Van Gogh studies. Some of these floaters even turned out to be firmly anchored in Van Gogh’s oeuvre, and “Vase With Poppies,” I am happy to say, is one of them.” “This extraordinary collaboration and harnessing of technology and professional discernment simply not available until now is a reminder of the opportunities today to both enrich discourse in the

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Look at almost any marketing promotion and advertising for some of the largest online auction houses and you are bound to come across the term “historic.” Outside of descriptions listing an item as either rare or mint, the word “historic” has to be one of the most overused terms in the antiques and collectibles trade. That copy of Action Comics #1? It’s historic. It ushered in the first-ever appearance of Superman. That 1932 movie poster from the horror classic “The Mummy?” It’s
historic. It is a Universal Pictures horror classic. That sticker-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. for the original Nintendo in near-mint condition? It’s historic. It ushered in a new era of electronic entertainment that still exists to this very day. Do a simple internet search for an accepted definition of the term “historic,” and you will be greeted by these definitions from MerriamWebster.com: “being famous or important in history” and “having great or lasting importance.” This leaves me asking whether the aforementioned items I listed are actually historic. Wouldn’t the term “iconic” be a better moniker? I don’t think a sticker-sealed
copy of Super Mario Bros., a pristine copy of Action Comics #1, or a 1932 movie poster from the movie “The Mummy” will have the same prevalence in society several hundred years from now that they may have today. I routinely criticize speculators in the antiques and collectibles trade for their overuse and lack of understanding of the terms “rare” and “mint.” If you want to see this practice in action, head over to eBay. Do a search on eBay, and you will find more than 5 million items with the term “rare” in their description (5,213,733 to be exact at the time I completed this inquiry). To be fair to my fellow collectors, sellers, and

speculators, I am also guilty of overusing the term. That said, I also understand that the word “rare” has become more of a description of an item to show demand rather than a moniker of scarcity. The term “mint” is used just as freely. It is this description that gets most newer sellers in trouble. While buyers of mass-produced items are most often forgiving of an item being described as rare when it is anything but, most collectors expect a nearbrand-new, pristine item when the word “mint” is used in a description. Going back to my thoughts on the term “historic,” several questions arise. First, can an item like Action Comics #1 be considered historic when compared to, say, a 1793 half-cent, which was the first coin ever minted by the U.S. Mint and authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792? How does a stickersealed copy of Super Mario Bros. compare to one of the first coins ever produced by the United States Mint? What about that movie poster? Isn’t the 1793 half-cent much more important in the grand scheme of things? Now let’s go a step further. After all, why should we stop there? Surely, a 1793 half-cent is much less historic than, say, a Roman Denarius silver coin. It became a staple of the Roman Empire and dates back to 211 B.C. And we can argue that since almost every child is taught about Roman history in school, then surely almost
Speculators and collectors chasing mass-produced popculture-based collectibles need to understand this, and, to be fair, some do. Whether they care is another matter. The inspiration for this article came out of a realization I had as to what I own that is truly historic. Ironically, sometimes to maximize a financial return, items need to be sold during one’s lifetime, given the market. I honestly don’t believe that most of the vintage toys, comic books, and vintage video games I have collected over the years will ever be sought after by future generations, as they will have their own temporary history of items to pursue. Furthermore, I have written a lot about the potential demise of mainstay collecting categories such as numismatics and stamps. Ironically, as I get older, I tend to treasure these items much more than the toys and games I grew up with. If the former items don’t represent the very definition of the term historic more than a factory-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros., then perhaps I am being too optimistic on my assessment of the antiques and collectibles trade and not pessimistic enough. Just some food for thought. Until next time.
R033447
Is It Really Historic?
every child will be briefly taught that the Romans used gold and silver coins. This must make the Roman Denarius much more historic than a half-cent minted in 1793, correct? I have started to chart how many online auction houses are now using the term “historic” to describe their auctions. I’m even seeing the term being applied to items manufactured in the 1990s. Both “Pokemon” and “Magic: The Gathering” collectible game cards are two examples. Most auction houses that cater to these items have used the term “historic” to describe some of them. That said, is this description incorrect? When I hear the term “historic,” I am inclined to believe the term should be reserved for items that have demand across multiple generations of collectors due to their historic significance. I find it hard to believe that something produced in 1993 can be considered historic today. Will people born in 2083 as opposed to 1973 consider that same item historic? Does this even matter to the items in question and the collectors who pursue them? I think it should. As I get older, I cannot help but focus on how future generations will covet or condemn a lot of the items that my generation loves. I have a hard time believing that several hundred years from now a copy of X-Men #1 will be highly sought. However, I have hope and reason to believe that the 1793 half-cent coin will still be sought after then.

Spring Rich Penn Auction: Perfect Cure For Cabin Fever Special Two-Day Sale Slated For April 27 And 28 For those who like salesman samples and toy stoves, there are more than three dozen from which to choose. Some of the more interesting are the Quick Meal, Karr, and Majestic. There will be some rare advertising pieces across a variety of categories, including early cardboard litho advertising fans. Among them will be a rare circa-1880s AnheuserBusch Brewing Association fan. This fan promotes H. P. Metz, Kansas City, Mo., as the agent. Other striking breweriana pieces include a Schmidt’s Beer light-up bullet sign. For City Club Beer, this St. Paul, Minn., curved glass sign is in excellent original condition. Another great example of early circa-1880s paper lithography is a litho for the John Deere C.H.D. horse-drawn fourbottom walk-behind plow. The John Deere legacy began with its innovations in plows. Professionally conserved, this litho is from the Porter Ptg. Co. in Moline, one of Deere’s first commercial printers. Another great early Deere piece, while not paper and in a much heavier medium, is the John Deere cast-iron letter holder. Beautifully cast, these rare pieces are always attractive to John Deere and Ag collectors alike. An array of movie posters, including early examples from the 1930s and ‘40s, will be sold. Examples are as diverse as Hopalong Cassidy up through the ’60s and ‘70s with Brigitte Bardot. Great advertising comes in metal as well. From Petroliana to breakfast food to Coca-Cola, there’s something for every interest. Everyone loves the bright smile of the Sunbeam Bread Girl. A framed “Come In” sign is a great example why. The framed Grape-Nuts “To School Well Fed” is an equally appealing collector favorite.
Squeeze soda bottle toppers are soda collector favorites, as are Coca-Cola string holders. Great examples will be sold. Petroliana collectors should be pumped for some nice visible gas pumps with older restorations. The two pumps, an Eric Motor Systems clockface and the American Oil Pump & Tank Co., 10 gallon visible, are ready to install in the garage. Several globes will be offered as well, including a Richfield Hi Octane, high-profile metal body with original glass lenses; Pure Oil Company, high profile metal body, with original lenses; and the Standard Gold Crown with excellent original paint. A Standard Red Crown bulk tank with excellent graphics intact will also be offered. The most unusual offering in the Petroliana category will be the Standard Oil working model of an oil rig. Built as an educational device for the Standard Oil Company, Des Moines, Iowa, it is a one-of-a-kind display piece, showing how the oil industry began. Coin-operated machine collectors will have several rare machines to add to their advanced collections. The Adams Tutti-Frutti gum wooden tall case four-column vendor, in original condition, would be a top choice. It has a companion piece, a counter display cabinet. It comes with a reverse etched glass front and tip-up top. This piece is rare. Another top choice would be a Caille upright floor scale. This circa-1910 restored balance scale will give an honest weight for just one penny. Two other desirable pieces would be the Jennings slot machines. In rare coinage, the counter model Standard Chief is in 50 cent play. A dollar play Club Chief comes in floor cabinet. Both are light-up versions and play well. Another rare machine is a Watling 25 cent Cherry Front with Twin and Diamond jackpot front. Another striking

The Marx Merry Makers “Mouse Band” litho on tin wind-up toy with rare marquee on piano, circa 1931, minor paint loss on piano, working condition, measures 8 by 9.5 inches. gambling piece is the Evans counter model upright “Domino Wheel.” This device is in great original condition and displays well. Trade stimulators include a Chicago Club-House in seldom found NOS condition. It has the original award card, transfers and lock. All Rich Penn Auctions always include a variety of country store and soda fountain items. Displays, spool cabinets, ribbon cabinets, drug store label cabinets and various display cases and counters will all be offered. Several counter coffee grinders as well as wall grinders will also be sold. Soda fountain collectors will be offered Ward’s OrangeCrush, Ward’s Lemon-Crush, Triple XXX Root Beer and other dispensers. Along with those popular items will be a Chico’s Display Jar, Planter’s Peanut jars, a Coca-Cola Franklin-Caro gum jar and others. “The Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center is just a half block from our office. It’s a great facility and adjoins a hotel and parking ramp. Both are connected by an enclosed skywalk. Plus, it’s within walking distance to great

Pook & Pook Inc.’s Spring Firearms and Militaria Auction is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, starting at 9 a.m. The sale will run just shy of 500 total lots with items from consignors around the country. The sale will present a fine cross-section of American history, with items spanning three centuries. From military ephemera, to pistols, shotguns and revolvers, to sportingrelated items and various swords and knives, Pook & Pook’s first firearms sale of the year is sure to please. Saturday’s auction will begin with just over 200 items hailing from the collection of Robert Spangler Jr., who was a carpenter by trade but and spent decades of his life devoted to the craft of gunsmithing. Over his lifetime, he has helped countless customers build custom firearms and has performed expert repairs. As a practiced marksman, Spangler holds a high master designation from the NRA and the title of distinguished rifleman from the Civilian Marksmanship Program, an award in excellence recognized by the U.S. government. His collection ranges in age from antique flintlock long rifles to modern hand guns. Unique and interesting items from the Spangler collection include the Chicago Firearms Co. “The Protector” palm pistol (est. $800-$1,200). Originally patented in France in 1882, the small, circular pistol was designed to be concealed in the palm of the hand.
