Gladys Lutz: Folk Painter Of The Lehigh Valley By Karl Pass Gladys M. Lutz (1909-2007) of Schnecksville, Pa. (born in Lynnport, Pa.), was an elementary school teacher for 37 years prior to retiring in 1964. The start of her education career was in one-room schoolhouses. Lutz was a member of Jacobs Church in New Tripoli and began her painting career in 1968. Documenting Pennsylvania German everyday life and culture, primarily in the Lehigh Valley, she worked with a vibrant color palette on board in what is considered a naive untrained or self-taught folk tradition. Lutz provided a short description on the reverse of her paintings using her manual typewriter, providing a documented historical record of what the scene or activity depicted. Specializing in themed series, she often did paintings in groups of five, such as covered bridges of the region. One example in the 9-by-12inch oil-on-board covered bridge series depicts “Schlicher’s Bridge.” The typed index card on reverse reads: “Schlicher’s Bridge is located near the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve. It is also known as the Deer Pen Bridge. It is the shortest (108 ft. long) and the ‘newest’ (built in 1882) bridge that spans the Jordan Creek. It is a one span structure, constructed with the Burr truss and is maintained by the state. It is one of five covered bridges that cross the Jordan Creek. The others are Guth’s Bridge, Wehr’s Bridge, Rex’s Bridge, and Geiger’s Bridge.” The other four are also depicted in the series. In 2005, the Albany Township Historical Society had a booth the Kutztown Folk Festival recreating a Pennsylvania German summer

Many farms used (some still do) summer kitchens during the heat of the summer months in order to keep extra heat out of the house. Summer kitchens are most often attached out buildings with a hearth and bake oven. An outgrowth of the festival experience prompted society volunteers to cre-

organized around the four seasons with seasonal illustrations by Lutz, was published in 2006. Filled with 115 recipes collected from local Pennsylvania German families, some are classic dishes, other recipes are more contemporary, adapted to modern times. Collection Of Bud And Judy Newman To Cross The Block On April 23 Antique Game Boards To Highlight Sale By Noel Barrett There are two types of collectors. Many come to the hobby later in life, often by happenstance: meeting another collector and acquiring the contagion or seeing an object that speaks to them somehow. Others are born, perhaps with some sort of recessive gene, and they begin as children when something sparks an interest. Bud Newman is in the “born” group; in the third grade he fell victim to the allure of stamp collecting, and the collecting never stopped, only the categories changed. Later in life, with his wife, Judy, early Pennsylvania furniture fell into one of their “had to have” categories, then onto American folk art including
painted children’s sleds and decorated stoneware. Collecting board games came to Bud through his business, Newman & Co., a major force in paper recycling and cardboard manufacturing. The company was started by his grandfather in 1918. Among the major buyers of Newman’s specialty cardboard were game and toymakers, including Parker Brothers, Milton Bradley and Selchow & Righter. Seeing what they were producing with his product, combined with Bud’s interest in things of America’s past, it was only a matter of time before he discovered the magic of late 19th and early 20th century board games. Their appeal is two-fold, as they are early masterpieces of graphics and color lithography, and they have much to tell us of our American past.
I first encountered Bud Newman in 1992, when I had the honor of offering at auction the collection of the pioneer game collector Herb Siegel. That sale was a watershed event for vintage game collecting, as well as in the personal journey of Bud in his quest for these playthings of the past. Bud’s collection includes about 30 pieces from the Siegel auction. Our upcoming Friday, April 23, sale is the first installment of his amazing collection, and it includes some of the earliest manufactured games, from the linen-backed lithographed paper games of the 1820s

right up to the early baseball and football games of the late 19th and early 20th century. It’s the largest grouping of brightly colored lithographed games by makers such as McLoughlin, Parker Brothers, Bliss and Singer. Highlights include McLoughlin’s 1883 “Bulls and Bears,” a holy grail piece for game collectors. It brings to life the era’s stock market shenanigans of Jay Gould and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Many games in the collection have crossover appeal. The McLoughlin masterpiece “Yellow Kid Ten Pins,” is as sought after by game collectors as by enthusiasts of comic character items. Outcault’s “Yellow Kid” is considered the first American comic strip, and this game offers 10 “kids” in all. The collection of sports games also appeals to two different collector constituencies. The highlight in this category is the astoundingly rare Zimmer’s “Baseball Game”; the colorful lithographed paper playing field displays portraits of 18 baseball players of that era, with Buck Ewing and Amos Rule as catcher and pitcher among others in the dugout, including Cy Young. The color lithography is by the incomparable McLoughlin Brothers. It is a “grail” piece for game as well as sports devotees, with only 10 believed to have survived. Bud’s collection is primarily games but also includes toys and puzzles made by some of the game makers. Along with almost 275 items from the game and toy collection, we will also be offering almost 200 pieces from Bud and Judy’s American folk art collection, including painted children’s sleds, New Hope impressionist paintings, decorated stoneware, paint Continued on page 3

traditional and non-traditional assets. This is one of the explanations that is causing everything from Bitcoin to real estate to stocks and even collectibles to increase exponentially in value. As a result, just due to the sordid history of Marvel Universe Trading Cards and how many seem to survive to this day, I would not be paying a significant premium for PSA 10 graded cards at present time. Perhaps in another 10 years I may end up regretting that advice, but for right now a nice S&P 500 Index Fund seems quite relaxing in a world where everything is oversold and overpriced. And if you don’t think collectors can put a price on nostalgia, I

for PSA 10 copies of some of these cards. Just a few years ago you could have bought a factory-sealed box of these cards on eBay for only a few hundred dollars or less. No one really wanted them. This all begs the question as to what is really behind the uptick in demand? Is it really only nostalgia at play here? One of my wisest mentors in antiques and collectibles used to tell me that over the long term the antiques and collectibles trade is akin to a casino. However, the short term is very easy to predict overall. Marvel Universe trading cards are something of an outlier, but then again, so are other esoteric trading cards from the 1980s and 1990s that are selling for tidy sums now. If you want proof just research what PSA-graded Garbage Pail Kids from the coveted first series that debuted in 1985 are currently selling for. Are we really on the cusp of having Marvel Universe Trading cards and Garbage Pail Kids being equivalent to the value of key vintage comic books? In order to answer these questions, we need to understand that the collectibles market has vastly changed over the course of the last year. The pandemic caused wealth inequality to be compounded due to most people either not being affected at all or some being affected to the brink of bankruptcy. A lot of the stimulus money that was paid to individuals and to corporations in some instances ended up in both

It is almost hard to believe that 1990 was 31 years ago. The antiques and collectibles trade was in a much different place at this time due to the fact that the internet, or more specifically ecommerce, had not arrived on the scene as of yet. In 1990, eBay was still five years away from being the envy of most dot-com start-ups. It was at this time that the collectibles side of the trade was fixated mostly on mass-produced collectibles that went through periods of peaks and valleys. The baseball card collector boom of the 1980s was starting to wear thin, while comic books and related collectibles were starting to come into their own due to the successful premier of Tim Burton’s 1989 blockbuster movie “Batman” that had just arrived on the scene. Contemporary comic books were the new kid on the proverbial block, and a lot of wannabe entrepreneurs were
quickly put into production. A lot of retailers and small comic book shops across the country sold these cards upon their release. Depending on where they were sold, they either sold very well or not at all. There are no reliable manufacturing numbers that I can find at present time to assess just how many of these series one cards were put into production, but one thing is clear: the manufacturing process for the cards was hit or miss. You can find some near perfect to perfect cards, but others are notorious for being off-centered or miscut. The cards were cheaply made and were flea market fodder for almost the last 30 years, but then came the pandemic and with it massive prices for both mainstream and niche collectibles. Collectors who had some of these cards started to notice the uptick in prices being paid for them within the past year. Along with the popularity of third-party grading for sports and non-sports cards alike, Marvel Universe trading cards were sent in to third-party grading companies like PSA to get graded. Once these graded cards started to hit eBay, collectors instantly became nostalgic. This sent prices for some of the scarcest high-grade cards rising across the board. Today, collectors are paying, in some instances, $4,000

opening up comic book stores across the country to capitalize on the trend. This was a time when slick, well-financed companies knew how to play on the naivete of the average collector-turned-speculator. After seeing the massively successful sports card manufacturers sell millions upon millions of overproduced cards, most of which are worthless to this very day, these same companies needed something else to peddle. Enter the comic book boom of the late 1980s. At that time, Marvel Comics was not owned by the Walt Disney Corporation. That merger would not take place for several more decades. Marvel Comics was targeted by billionaire Wall Street financiers in an attempt to control the fledging publisher and its roster of comic book characters that could be licensed to the highest bidder. This fascinating tale was told in all its glory in the incredible book “Comic Wars” written by Dan Raviv. Marvel Comics was betting that the recent massive speculative boom transpiring in comic books would translate to other products, one of them being trading cards based on Marvel comic characters. Manufactured by Impel Corporation in 1990, the first series of Marvel trading cards was officially named Marvel Universe Trading Cards and were

Fortunately, the building’s interior required only minimal cosmetic changes and a light, general refresh to get it ready for business. The cataloging office has been graced with a giant “Alexander: The Man Who Knows” billboard poster to one wall, with further decorations planned as the year goes on. “This move was long overdue. “Jim Davis: The Art Of Garfield” Comes To Heritage Auctions On April 15 Special Auction Will Feature Paintings, Animation Cels, Original Strips And Other Pieces From The Creator’s Collection Jim Davis, the man who has raised the world’s most famous housecat since 1978, decided two years ago to begin selling his original strips through Heritage Auctions. That choice, the Garfield creator says now, was an easy one, not because he needed the space in the vault, but because he loved the idea of letting readers own those hand-drawn originals dating back to the strip’s debut. Fans’ reasons for buying those Garfield strips have varied since they began appearing in Heritage’s Comic Art auctions. Some collect special dates, strips that first ran on a birthday or an anniversary. Some collect certain characters, maybe Jon or maybe Odie, or certain gags about hating Mondays or loving lasagna. Some because a specific strip helped pull them through a particularly rough patch. And some, merely for the bragging rights. “You have a piece of the franchise there: ‘Hey, look at this, on this day 200 million people read this strip, and now I have it on my wall,’” Davis says with an appreciative chuckle. He once gave away his works to family and friends, and some he donated to museums, among them the
National Museum of American History. But what a worldwide audience adored, what readers of more than 2,500 newspapers pored over each morning, a single owner can forever admire, appreciate, and, yes, show off. After all, says his creator, “Garfield is there to entertain. He’s there to please. He’s there to make people feel a little better. I’ve heard some wonderful stories about kids coming home from school after a tough day and sitting in the closet and reading one of the books until they feel better enough to come back out into the world. I know there are strips that have spoken to other people, and it’s just fun to give other people an opportunity to own a special strip.” But now, for the first time, Davis is giving fans a chance to go beyond owning a strip. Bidding is open now as Heritage Auctions presents “Jim Davis: The Art of Garfield,” a special auction featuring more than 130 works including paintings, production cels from the award-winning animation specials, calendar artwork, signed lithographs and, of course, those beloved original strips, including many from the

process. “People are interested in it,” he says. “I know I enjoy watching rehearsals as much as seeing the performance, because I love the interactions and watching people tweak the work and make it better. I like tours of manufacturing plants. I like seeing things put together. It shows an effort that goes into creating a piece. It’s not like you just sit down and paint.” With Jim’s design direction, Davis’ art staff produced some delightful and playful pieces, of course, chief among them an acrylic-on-canvas portrait of Garfield from 1997 that’s as iconic as any Garfield piece ever created. Here, too, are painted pieces celebrating Christmas (with Odie serving as Rudolph’s replacement); parodying Grant Wood’s “American Gothic,” and depicting the cat with his hand in the cookie jar, among others. When discussing the cels for those prime-time specials, Davis recalls the stories behind each scene, the result of intense collaborations that involved him drafting the production drawings and directing the voice actors in the studio. Says Davis, when he looks at the cels being offered in the auction, “I can remember every moment, because they were hanging on my office walls for weeks until we made it click. We had great fun doing that. These all have a story behind them.” Davis, who stopped putting pen to paper in 2011, still draws Garfield every single day, now using digital tools. That’s but one reason why this work remains so special to so many, because it will never exist in this form again. “There’s a thing about holding art,” said Davis. “When
you touch it and have a tactile relationship with something, it’s part of you. It’s your baby. There’s literally an emotional attachment to the art.” But when asked if he was at all hesitant about parting with the pieces, “No, not really. In part, that’s because they’re going to new homes, to owners for whom these singular moments resonate.” But more so, Davis says, “it’s because he’s still trying to get it right.” Yes, Garfield may well be a global franchise worth a fortune. But to his creator, he’s still a cat very much in need of his care and attention. “I have never taken it for granted,” stated Davis. “I am still trying to tweak, fix, make something better, make something funnier. Ask any artist what they think of their own art, and you will always get the most critical response. I keep pushing. I am sitting here in my library with drawings and cartoons, little sculptures sitting all over the place. I am reminded of what he’s done, where he’s been. The books are lined up all over the shelves. That part I have to ignore. I would be overwhelmed if I tried to think of it all together. I try to focus on what I’ve done the last few weeks and where I want to take him.” “Writing is like a working meditation, I take everything into account and zone out and let the ideas and thoughts come to me. It’s still getting easier after all these years. I know more every day. It’s not work. It’s about getting into the right frame of mind and having Garfield dictate things to me. I just edit. That’s all I am doing, grabbing what’s out there.” To learn more, visit www.HA.com.

from what he also made in Norwalk, Conn., and at the Huntington Pottery on Long Island. But we also learned that little is known about Gregory’s simpler production without slip, and that some of his slipware in Clinton can even be mistaken for wares made in Pennsylvania. However, to understand Gregory’s work in Clinton, one

Interestingly, the personalities of most early American potters are not known; however, author, Amos Delos Gridley published “History of the Town of Kirkland, New York” in 1874, describing the businesses of Erastus Barnes and Gregory, as well as a firsthand account he had been told by someone who knew Gregory: “Erastus Barnes established the first pottery in Clinton, his works being nearly in the rear of the late Reverend Charles Jerome’s residence on College Street (Hamilton College established in 1793). He found clay of an excellent quality on the Gleason farm, near Manchester, and his business was, for those times, large and lucrative. Mr. John B. Other notable objects of interest include a slip-decorated vase with two eagles, a slip-decorated pitcher with eagles inscribed “Clinton Ware,” as well as another plate inscribed, “Made / By J B G / Oct 18 1823 / Clinton,” which is considered one of the earliest examples of dated and signed red earthenware from New York. In Retrospect Upon arriving back in Norwalk, Conn., in 1831, Gregory continued to produce red earthenware with apparently a large focus still given to slipware. Examples of his production from this period seem to have been exported to the New York City market, based on some examples recovered in various archaeological contexts, including artifacts found on Staten Island in the collection of the Staten Island Historical Society. The wares he made at the Huntington Pottery were also likely exported to New York City. The wares he made in Clinton may

It might have performed better before outdoor gatherings for parades were cancelled.” In the Canadian furniture category, a Drumbo (Ontario) painted pine sawbuck table from the 1830s, pictured in Howard Pain’s book, “The Heritage of Upper Canadian Furniture,” realized $7,080, while an 1830s Quebec onedoor commode, of full mortise and tenon construction and having paneled sides and door, diminutive at 38.5 inches tall by 32 inches wide, brought $5,605. Elizabeth K. “Lisa” Millard, who together with her husband, Joe, operated Fireside Antiques in Pluckemin, N.J., and later E. Millard Antiques in the Black Angus Antiques Mall in Adamstown, Pa., died at the age of 96 on March 22, 2021, surrounded by her loving family, at Country Meadows Assisted Living in Allentown, Pa., where she lived. Lisa and Joe began Fireside Antiques in 1959 and operated it as a full-time business from their 1752 red colonial home in the village of Pluckemin. The Millards specialized in fine early American furniture, iron and pewter. Lisa and Joe also managed several well-known antiques shows, including the Far Hills Antique Show in New Jersey and the Downingtown Antique Show in Pennsylvania, as well as others. In 1980, Lisa and Joe moved to Ephrata, Pa., and operated E. Millard Antiques, which Lisa continued to operate after Joe died in 1994 until she retired at the age of 90 in 2015. Lisa absolutely loved the antiques business, the thrill of the hunt and the sale, and was known and loved by many dealers and customers. Lisa and Joe traveled from Maine to Virgini visiting shops, auctions and shows in search of fine furniture, and interesting iron and pewter. Lisa came from a long line of business owners tracing back to the turn of the century where horse and wagon was the mode of selling wares of her grandfather in her hometown of Straubing, Germany. She was the daughter of Katharina Voggenthaler and Franz Ettl. She lived through World War II in Germany, and her stories of survival and heroism to help others came to life each time she told them. She was a consummate storyteller. She
