Booming Interest In Pop Culture Results In Sixth Million-Dollar Auction For Hake’s Americana And Collectibles Circa 1935 Mickey And Minnie Store Displays Smash Estimates, Selling For $29,222

ake’s Americana and Collectibles, the company that brought pop culture auctions to the mainstream 48 years ago, reached another historic milestone on March 19, its sixth million-dollar-plus sale. Hake’s two-session absentee and online Auction #214, held on March 17 and 19, chalked up a $1,024,337 total, with a strong 81 percent sell-through rate (by lot). All prices quoted include a 15 percent buyer’s premium. “With this auction we also set a record for the number of bidders who participated, which is a testament to the strength of the collectibles industry,” said Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Americana. “The zealous bidding we see in each and every one of our auctions is always a gratifying reminder of the position we’re privileged to occupy within the pop-culture hobby. Not only is Hake’s widely acknowledged as America’s first collectibles auction house, it also serves the

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics My Collection Goes To Auction and conditions offered by other auction galleries and they closed the deal by offering to pick up the books in person. I also chose to consign some coins and currency with them as well. I thought my decision to sell would be much more difficult than it was. As I start to see the scans of my coveted books appear on the Heritage Auctions website, however, I can’t help but feel both excited and saddened. I know the books will achieve some of the best prices possible, but at the same time I still can’t help but wonder if I will miss some of my books. One book in particular, “The House of Secrets #92” (first appearance of The Swamp Thing) in CGC 9.4 I already miss, mainly for the fact that it features one of my favorite stories of all time. I keep telling myself that I can always buy the book again if my feelings persist. I also am glad I chose to sell at this particular point in time. At the beginning of May the newest Avengers movie hits theaters and comic book fans have been eagerly awaiting its release for well over two years now. This should help fuel the demand for most of my books, especially since so many of the books I consigned feature characters that make an

appearance in this movie. Heritage Auction Galleries has always had the unique ability to schedule some of their most prolific auctions at the best times and this is no exception. This experience has taught me that all collectors should eventually sell either part or all of their collections while they are still alive. I now know that I would have no problem letting go of any of my other collections if I felt the time was right. Before my decision to sell I was worried that I had become too concerned with amassing high-end collections of various items. It got to the point where the most important piece in my collection was always the one I had yet to own. Deciding to part with my comic book collection ensured I would always know that there are much more important things in life than just things.Preparing to sell this collection also showed me valuable insight into the current marketplace and allowed me to make new connections with other collectors and auctioneers. I look forward to doing another follow-up article after the collection is sold. Until that time comes I continue to enjoy seeing the scans of my coveted books appear online with each passing day.

In my last article titled “To Sell or Not to Sell,” I discussed the possibility of selling my high-grade vintage comic book collection. The collection was amassed over several years and contains near mint examples of some of the most sought after key issues from the bronze and silver age eras. Since the time that article was published the collection was consigned to Heritage Auctions, and it will be offered it in an upcoming Signature Auction to take place this May. My decision to part with the collection was not an easy one and upon making my decision I was left with multiple options. Some of these options included selling the collection privately, consigning the collection to a well-known dealer, and the option I chose, consigning it to auction. The decision to consign it to auction was an easy one. I already had an exit strategy in place when I started building the collection almost a decade ago. The collection was not only built out of nostalgia and emotion but also

with an investment element in mind. Prior to the time I started to accumulate these comic books, superheroes continued to dominate everything from Hollywood to video games to popular culture. By the time I bought the first book in the collection I already had an established relationship with most wellknown dealers and established auctioneers. All I had to do was decide to sell and contact several auction houses that I knew would be interested in obtaining the collection. Heritage Auctions made the offer to come to my house, review the collection in great detail, and pick up the collection in person, leaving me with no shipping costs. Due to the fact that the collection was already graded by CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) and all the books were in 9.2 or better condition, I was also able to negotiate a more than fair consignment rate that made letting go of the collection all the more easier. Before contacting Heritage Auctions I spoke to several other dealers and auction galleries that cater to high-end vintage comic books. Due to the estimated value of the collection, Heritage Auctions was able to at least match the terms

alone. A lot of effort took place before the auction, and those endeavors bore fruit during their first ever fourday sale. First and foremost, hosting a four-day sale takes a lot of elbow grease. Cataloging the guns, photographing, describing, etc, is a lot of work for over 7,000 items. Then came the job of making sure the collectors of the world knew about this massive event. The following are a few statistics from the

The following day, Saturday, is typically the busiest, most exciting day of the auction, but it was hard to imagine much better participation. It was the third day of the auction and did not disappoint in its energy or its participation. Things started off strong with the third lot of the day, an Ulrich engraved,

The pace was quick, the auctioneers were bantering comically with each other (and sometimes the crowd), the action was intense, the bids were flowing, and the commotion in the hall was fun for everyone in attendance. In the first ever fourday sale, the boisterous activity refused to die down even on its very last day. Much like Day two, big bids began to rain in almost immediately as a grouping of Winchesters and preWinchesters crossed the block. Lot 5,004 was an engraved Winchester 1866, with some very attractive walnut furniture, that sold for $8,625. The middle of the day held its own in Lot 5,311 with an early 1893 Borchardt pistol bearing a three-digit serial number, besting its estimate of $7,500 by realizing $10,925. Another bonanza of German dagger and sword accoutrements in Lot 5,337, estimated at $2,000, sparked a strong bidding battle that finally came to rest after achieving $8,625.

Rock Island Auction Company’s (RIAC) February Regional Firearms Auction started off the 2015 calendar year to a success for the specialty firm. Throughout the four days of Feb. 19 to 22, everybody seemed to be having a good time. To the crowd’s delight, the auctioneers alternated between giving each other a hard time and teasing some loyal customers. Add to that fastpaced and lighthearted atmosphere a packed and buzzing phone bank, live Internet bids of surprising amounts, beautiful collector firearms, and frequent bidding battles, and the result was an entertaining and rewarding weekend. Everything that makes a successful auction doesn’t take place the weekend of the event

The 12th Annual Trenton Ceramics Symposium Will Be Held April 18

WANTED: BASEBALL COLLECTIBLES!

For over 30 years no one has consistently helped more sellers realize more money for their quality BASEBALL MATERIAL than Robert Edward Auctions. Offering an unparalleled tradition of integrity, knowledge, and professionalism, and an extraordinary national client base.

Symposium To Focus On Trenton’s Contributions To The Progress Of American Hygiene how the move from “outhouses” and “backhouses” to indoor toilets was enormously important in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in terms of public health, shifting gender roles and architectural trends. Gerling holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin. He joined Augustana’s faculty in 2012, and in 2013 he began serving as the director of the Writing Center, Augustana’s nationally-certified peer tutoring program. Bill Liebeknecht will investigate Trenton’s sanitary innovations by examining over 40 patents granted to the city’s inventors during the latter part of the 19th century and opening decades of the 20th century. Patents range from bowl

designs to water tanks, flushing mechanisms, seat designs and covers. They also include coupling designs which allowed the tanks to be mounted directly behind the toilet and firmly to the floor. These seemingly insignificant patents had an enormous impact on lives. Liebeknecht is a registered professional archaeologist and is employed at Hunter Research Inc. in Trenton, N.J. He holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Beloit College in Wisconsin and master’s degree in public history from Rutgers University. The afternoon session will offer several delights, including Sally Lane’s exploration of the Trenton origins of a legendary White House bathtub, “Rub-a-dub-dub, Four Men in Taft’s Tub.” Lane, who has a B.A. in history from Columbia University, wrote a weekly newspaper column on Trenton history for eight years. In addition, Ellen Denker, POTS board member and program chair, will offer a brief discussion of the potters’ unions and the strike that had such an impact on labor relations in Trenton, transforming the city’s ceramics industry. Richard Hunter, of Hunter Research, will end with an overview of Trenton’s sanitary manufacturing sites and show how they engaged with the other manufacturing sites in the city. The day will finish with a closing reception sponsored by the Trenton Museum Society to be held at Ellarslie, the Museum of the City of Trenton, in Cadwalader Park. Participants will be able to view the Trenton Central High School exhibit, which includes examples of Thomas Maddock’s Sons Company This is “A Modern Bathroom” by Thomas Maddock’s Sons sanitary ware that was used to Company, an illustration from “Pottery: A History of the Pottery Industry and its Evolution as Applied to Sanitation” outfit the high school. Additional sanitary ware in the (1910).

museum’s collection will be brought out of storage especially for this event. The Trenton Ceramics Symposium is open to the public. Members of the Potteries of Trenton Society, Friends of the New Jersey State Museum, and Trenton Museum Society may attend for $30, if paid in advance. Attendees who pay at the door will be charged $40. Registration includes all lectures, refreshments, lunch, and a closing reception. A mail-in registration form may be downloaded and printed from the POTS website at www.potteriesoftrenton.org, or interested parties may contact POTS president Patricia Madrigal at 609-695-0122, ext. 100, or email president @potteriesoftrentonsociety.org.

Strong Sales Reported For March Pier Antique Show décor, paintings, antique jewelry, art glass, ceramics, and more. Fashion Alley also had a variety of vintage clothing, jewelry and handbags available for purchase. Pottery dealer Paul Katrich completely sold out his showcase of pieces on opening day of the show. Katrich first exhibited at the Pier Antique Show last November. “Each piece I sold is going to a different customer all over the country,” said Katrich. Judy Bergman of What Was Is Vintage, who sells vintage jewelry and accessories for women, was thrilled about her continual flow of customers all weekend. “We had a great corner booth space that provided us with more exposure to attendees and allowed us to expand our range of merchandise. We networked with many new customers that we feel will become long-term buyers and

friends,” said Bergman. U.S. Antique Shows reported that 60 percent of all booths are sold for the November 2015 show. In addition, dealers are eagerly signing up to exhibit in Fashion Alley this fall. Fashion Alley is one of the most popular sections with attendees, and U.S.

If visitors return the day after their visit with a receipt, they may enter the museum for free and purchase tours at the $8/$5 additional rate. Tours for the second day are only available for purchase at the museum admissions desk.

With national and international dealers, collectors, interior decorators, and celebrities in attendance, the buying and selling of merchandise remained steady throughout the show. “While furniture, Asian items, silver, and jewelry had strong sales,” said Dan Darby, Emerald Expositions vice president and U.S. Antique Shows general manager, “it was art, home décor pieces, vintage fashion, and items from the Art Deco and Art Moderne periods that really flew out the door at

Spring Auction Ends April 25 Consistent with that tradition, this auction features a variety of items from some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment, from Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays to The Three Stooges, “The Sopranos” and more,” said Brian Dwyer, consignment director of Robert Edward Auctions. Highlights in the sale include the following: The 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner PSA 3 baseball card was found in an Oceanside, N.Y., attic in 2008. This Honus Wagner, nicknamed the “Oceanside Wagner,” was sold the same year by its original owner’s family at an estate auction for $791,000. Purchased by a Robert Edward Auctions consignor, where it remained in a private collection for seven years, its new buyer will be only the third owner in the card’s 106year existence. Approximately

This 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner PSA 3 baseball card was found in an Oceanside, N.Y., attic in 2008. Since then it has been known in the industry as the “Oceanside Wagner.”

50 to 75 T206 Honus Wagner’s are believed to exist and this card is one of the finest examples ever evaluated. It received a 3 on a scale of 10 by a professional, thirdparty grading service. Only four T206 Honus Wagner cards have ever received a higher grade. Bidding will open at $100,000; however, the card is estimated to sell for more than $1 million. The 1916 M101-4 Sporting News Babe Ruth rookie card features one of the most legendary players of all time as a rookie with the Boston Red Sox. Ruth was famously traded from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees, the team for which he is best known to have played. The card was issued as a promotional vehicle for the Sporting News and bears advertising for the publications on its reverse. Owned by the same family since the 1980s, this rare card is being sold publicly for the first time. It has been professionally graded and evaluated 6 out of 10 by a third-party grading company. Bidding will open at $25,000; however, this baseball card is expected to sell for more than $100,000. A 1979 Thurman Munson New York Yankees gameworn pinstripe home uniform complete with jersey and pants originated directly from Diana Munson, widow of Thurman Munson, who sold items from her collection at public auction in 2008. Munson attests that this is one of the last uniforms ever worn by her late husband, a Yankees favorite who died tragically on Aug. 2, 1979. The first New York Yankees team captain since Lou Gehrig, this uniform is one of only two complete Munson uniforms ever offered at public auction, and the only one originating directly from the Munson family. It has been evaluated as a perfect 10 out of 10 by a third-party memorabilia grading company. Bidding will open at $25,000; however, the uniform is estimated to sell for more than

$50,000 at auction. A 2009 New York Yankees World Series ring presented to a front office employee has a total of 119 diamonds of varying sizes and is the exact style, size, weight and design as rings issued to players on the 2009 team. The bidding will open at $5,000; however, the ring is estimated to sell for more than $20,000. The Augusta National Golf Club Green Jacket is one of the most recognizable articles of clothing in professional sports and is awarded each year to the winner of the Masters Tournament. A Green Jacket is also given to members of the iconic Augusta National Golf Club. This 1999 jacket formerly belonged to W. Ron Alexander, one of only three Scottish members of Augusta National and a member of its Masters Rules Committee in 2000. The jacket is emblazoned with the signature Augusta National logo on the left breast and on its distinct gold buttons. Fewer than 10 Green Jackets have ever been made available to the public, most notably one belonging to golf legend Bobby Jones, which sold at public auction in 2011 for $310,700. Bidding will open at $2,000; however, the jacket is estimated to sell for between $10,000 and $20,000. Other expected auction highlights include a 1910 T210 Old Mill Joe Jackson baseball card estimated to sell for between $100,000 and $150,000, a 1971 Willie Mays San Francisco Giants gameused home jersey estimated to sell for between $30,000 and $50,000, a 1970 Hank Aaron Atlanta Braves signed gameused home jersey estimated to sell for more than $50,000, and a 1970 Brooks Robinson Baltimore Orioles signed game-used road jersey estimated to sell for more than $25,000. The Frick Acquires A Rare And Important 16th-Century French Ceramic Ewer Since the mid-19th century, Renaissance Italian bronze statuettes, maiolica wares, Limoges enamels, and French 16th-century ceramics belonged to the category of objects that every serious art collector in Europe hoped to own, their value and association with royal and noble provenance bestowing upon their owners an aura of cultivation and taste. The greatest

collections were assembled by Sir Richard Wallace, George Salting, Frederic Spitzer, and several members of the Rothschild family, among others. Henry Clay Frick, who emulated these European collectors, acquired in 1915 most of John Pierpont Morgan’s renowned collection of Italian bronzes and Limoges enamels. Three years later, he completed his Renaissance collection of sculpture and decorative arts with the acquisition of a Saint-Porchaire ewer, related to a small group of elaborate

French 16th-century ceramics. Only about 70 authentic pieces of Saint-Porchaire are known today, making them exceedingly rare. In March, with the generous support of Trustee Sidney R. Knafel, the Frick purchased an unusual Saint-Porchaire ewer decorated with a lizard spout and a handle in the shape of a bearded man. The ewer enjoys a prestigious provenance, having descended in the French branch of the Rothschild family, and recent research connects the ewer to the famed ceramicist Bernard

Palissy, which makes it a particularly exciting acquisition for the museum. The newly acquired ewer is on view in the Enamels Room with the Frick’s other example of SaintPorchaire. The Frick Collection is an art museum in the former residence of Henry Clay Frick. It is located at 1 E. 70th St. in New York City. To learn more, visit www.frick.org.

drop leaf work table with a pullout silk work bag and glass pulls, which sold for $3,240, over seven times its presale estimate, while an American carved mantle in old white paint sold for $5,000. Canadian furniture struck a chord with buyers when a set of seven Canadian classical chairs attributed by Thomas Nesbit sold for $4,500 against a presale estimate of $500$1,000. Alongside this highlight was a Canadian classical card table, also by Nesbit, which brought $1,200. Fine art was represented with a portrait of Abraham Lincoln attributed to William Matthew Prior (1806-73). The reverse glass portrait in a gilt frame sold for $960. An early English oil-on-canvas portrait of a gentleman signed and dated 1802 brought $1,125 against a presale estimate of $400-$600, and eight handcolored bird prints after John James Audubon, all unframed, hammered down at $750. Additional highlights included a decorated American apple tray with marbleized paint over early grain paint. The tray was initialed and dated “SKL 1893” and sold for $1,920. Next in line was a 19th-century American dough box made from pine with original robin’s egg blue paint that brought $1,440. Catching everyone’s attention was a stoneware jug by Cowden & Wilcox depicting a cobalt man-in-the-moon design. The amusing jug sold for $2,760, more than doubling its presale estimate. An American officer’s cavalry saber most likely from the War of 1812 and featuring an American shield with bone grip brought $1,560, while an American sheet-iron weathervane of soldiers sold for $1,080. Another unique item, a Mocha pepper pot with two bands of cat’s eyes, crossed the block for $1,050, also doubling its presale estimate.
