Rare Machine Man Robot Commands $86,100 At Morphy’s Toy And Doll Auction Cast-Iron Mechanical Banks, Many With Prestigious Provenance, Attract Strong Bidding An imposing lithographedtin visitor from both the future and times past, a Masudaya Machine Man robot claimed the top position in Morphy Auctions’ March 13 and 14 toy auction, selling for $86,100. Big, boxy and 15 inches tall, the late 1950s/early 1960s Masudaya’s “Machine Man” tin-litho battery-operated robot from the Gang of Five series, near mint, one of the finest examples known and consigned by the original owner, realized $86,100.

Japanese production is one of few known examples of its type from the fabled “Gang of Five” robot series. “We were not surprised that the Machine Man exceeded its high estimate,” said Morphy’s president Dan Morphy. “It’s in nearmint to mint condition, which is rare in itself for a 60-year-old robot, but on top of that, it has only had one owner. The person who consigned it to our auction received the toy brand new as a Christmas present when he was 9 years old. It’s very unusual to come across a vintage toy as rare as this one that has remained with its original owner for its entire existence.” The robot had been entered in Morphy’s sale with expectations of selling for $50,000-$80,000. The battery-operated Machine Man robot was designed with a bump-and-go action, and when activated, its ears, eyes and mouth light up. “To many robot fans, a Machine Man in any condition would be the crown jewel of their collection, and to have the opportunity to buy one this nice is almost unheard of. Now it has become part Continued on page 2

Welcome spring. The Grist Mill Antiques Center is celebrating with a special sales display of Easter collectibles and flowers, vintage paper mache, wind-up toys, candy containers, antique postcards and bunnies to create a colorful collection. Vintage German paper mache eggs are a sweet collectible, and the Grist Mill has a large selection. The eggs traditionally are decorated in Easter scenes of children, chicks and flowers, then filled with treats, toys or presents and often presented to each child at breakfast or hidden on Easter morning. Displayed in baskets or perched on egg cups, paper mache eggs create a centerpiece that will charm guests. Wind-up toys abound. Bunnies can be found that dance, play a drum and eat a carrot. A panda bear and tin elephant ride bikes, a teddy bear dances, and a black bull spins its tail to charge in a circle. Other vintage toys on sale include tops, trucks, sand toys, trains, dolls, erector sets and more. An everything Easter sale will take place from Wednesday, April

of one of the very few collections worldwide that contains a complete ‘Gang of Five,’” stated Morphy. The 1,588-lot auction, which grossed $1.9 million, featured 77 exceptional castiron mechanical banks, a lineup that brought strong prices across the board. A near-mint, all-original Merry-Go-Round bank made by Kyser & Rex of Philadelphia came with provenance from the late Donal Markey, a distinction that would be the bank collector’s equivalent of three Michelin stars. Described as “an absolutely outstanding example,” the bank sold within estimate for $55,350. Several antique mechanicals made by J. & E. Stevens finished among the top 10 banks. A mint-condition thin-base variation of the Milking Cow bank, formerly in the Covert Hegarty collection, landed at $49,200, as did a Magician bank in nearmint-plus condition. A

Stevens Chief Big Moon bank with a NativeAmerican theme flew past its $6,000$9,000 estimate to reach $25,830, a result attributable in no small way to its flawless condition. Two other banks that ranked high with bidders were a Stevens Owl Turns Head in the white color variation, $22,140, and an alloriginal Shepard Hardware Uncle Sam bank, $19,860. Finishing tops amongst the tin banks was a seldom-seen German-made production known as the Empire Cinema.

The books on the subject still remain inaccessible to me, but I have built up a lot of interest in the subject by visiting museum collections and learning about the various periods and styles. Valuing Japanese prints is a challenge, and I am sure that I have made mistakes in my collecting. Still, the pleasure of collecting the items is immense, and I think we probably have done better than not.

I don’t encourage this kind of collecting for the novice. For every interesting Japanese print, I see dozens of prints that were probably purchased for under a dollar in airport gift shops, etc. Most are easy to spot, but many more have some age to them and can fool the eye so easily. So if you are thinking about a new area to collect. I would encourage you to look for opportunities in those areas where a little extra research and study may pay off.

R034686

Peter Swift Seibert Some years ago in the magazine Art and Antiques, there was a wonderful column on what was not hot in the antiques world. While I have since lost the article in our myriad of moves, the general gist of it was that there are big broad categories of antiques that are not collectible. The author suggested that these might be good places for people to begin their budding collections. Broadly speaking, the categories of out-of-fashion antiques broke into two areas. First are those areas that simply are out of fashion; seventeenth century English oak, American Empire, lusterware and the like were in this category. They had been once highly collected but had fallen away because of changing tastes. The second category consisted of items about which the research and knowledge were very esoteric. It was not to say there were no research

books (or websites today), but rather that accessing the materials, viewing original items and then having a big selection to buy were all challenges. Items in this category included pattern glass, Japanese prints, and Islamic art. I was thinking about the latter category the other day, as it is an area that still remains the purview of experts rather than casual collectors. I enjoy Japanese prints immensely and have put together a collection of them for my youngest daughter for her future home. We got interested in them as a family when we visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and saw a collection of them on exhibition there. The work was exquisite, and I was intrigued that the tradition spanned so many centuries. While I knew that I could not find early examples, there were plenty from the 19th and particularly the 20th centuries that appealed to me. Our first shopping foray into buying came during a trip to Savannah, Ga., when a kind dealer let us pick out a baker’s dozen prints that we purchased and brought home. Since then we have added

Having become dated by the late 1920s, the last Pall Mall body was produced in 1928. It gave way to the sleek, low, and more American-styled Ascot/Derby line represented by the Winterthur Phantom I Ascot, S 379 FM. The du Pont family has been enamored of high-end automobiles since the beginning of the automotive era. Alfred I. du Pont owned the second automobile in

Three’s Company: Brastoff, Bellaire, And Adams Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson California’s a big state, but when it came to mid-20th century ceramics, the paths of many West Coast designers crossed more than once. “Kaye of Hollywood” started out as a decorator for Hedi Schoop. Hedi herself, after her own factory burned down, moved on to design housewares for “The California Cleminsons.” But, perhaps most fascinating of all are the entwined careers of three of the era’s most popular ceramists: Sascha Brastoff, Marc Bellaire, and Matthew Adams.

Brastoff came first, and remains the best-known, thanks to an unrelenting enthusiasm for self-promotion. Billed in his ads as “the modern Cellini,” Brastoff was indeed an extraordinary design talent, churning out giftware buyers couldn’t get enough of, in ceramic as well as metal, terra cotta, resin, and fabric. Beginning life as the lessdramatically named Samuel Brostofsky, Brastoff reinvented

the signature Brastoff style: a modernistic, yet approachable blend of theatricality and whimsy. Stars such as Zsa Zsa Gabor and Joan Crawford flocked to the Brastoff studio, snatching up his latest releases. Naturally, a talented staff was required to keep up with the demand. Among the most talented: one Donald Fleischman, better known as Marc Bellaire. Bellaire’s own design instincts were less traditional

than Brastoff’s, which led him, in the early 1950s, to leave and strike out on his own. While the curved shapes of his ceramics (boomerang ashtrays, covered “kidney” boxes, and the like) and a bold use of color tread the same path as Brastoff, Bellaire’s illustrative designs firmly embrace the futuristic trends of the 1950s. Faceless, elongated figures in billowing costumes cavort on huge ashtrays, platters, and pitchers, appropriate images for the dawn of the space age. And, like Brastoff, Bellaire helped his career along with a generous helping of

self-promotion: his booklets on “ceramic decorating for amateurs” kept the Bellaire name before the American public (and, not so coincidentally, kept sales hopping). Unlike Bellaire and Brastoff, Matthew Adams early on found a single design theme and stuck with it: Alaskana. Although the shapes of his vases, bowls, trays, and the like favor the same curving lines as his colleagues, you won’t find any Brastoff “Star Steeds” or Bellaire “Jungle Dancers” on an Adams piece. You will, however, find a plethora of Eskimos, polar bears, walruses, log cabins, snowy landscapes, and other staples of the far north. Although more realistically depicted than the

himself during World War II, appearing in the military revue “Winged Victory.” After the war, he supported ceramic experimentation with a “day job” as a costume designer at 20th Century Fox. to systematically study and collect early American pottery. While visiting a local farmhouse in the Hartford area in the spring of 1884, his discovery of two pieces of redware or lead glazed red earthenware pottery spurred his passion for ceramics. Pitkin began to amass a collection and became known as a leading authority of New England red earthenware. “In 1910, he joined the staff at the Wadsworth Antheneum as curator of the department of ceramics. During his tenure, he oversaw the installation of his own collections in the Morgan Memorial, and upon his death, his wife, Sarah Howard Loomis Pitkin, donated over 300 objects to the museum.” The Wadsworth Antheneum is one of the earliest museums established in America, having been founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848), a native of Hartford who was an artist, architect, traveler and patron of the arts. The museum is comprised today of five buildings, but the first was the Gothic Revival Wadsworth building that was built in 1844. Later came the Watkins Library of Reference in the 1860s, the Tudor Revival Colt Memorial in 1910, the Renaissance Revival Morgan Memorial of 1910-15, and finally the Avery Memorial in 1934. Pitkin may be most known as a collector today; it was his involvement with the Morgan Memorial that he achieved notoriety within academic and museum circles during this lifetime. John Pierpont Morgan Sr. (1837-1917) was born in Hartford on April 17, 1837, and became among the biggest figures in American banking and financing in the late-19th and 20th centuries. For instance, he is responsible for the merger that created General Electric, as well as other enterprises, such as J.P. Morgan & Company, the United States Steel Corporation and AT&T. “But his family was also the third generation of Morgans to support the Wadsworth Antheneum. His grandfather, Joseph, was one of the institution’s founders, and John and his father, Junius, contributed generously to the museum. Following Junius’ death in 1890, J. Pierpont Morgan commissioned and funded the Morgan Memorial building in his father’s honor. In 1917, in accordance with his father’s will, John Pierpont “Jack” Morgan (1867-1943) dispersed more than 1,350 objects from

sitting president in 1839, Martin Van Buren (1782-1862). In 1866, the elder Bennett gave his son control of the newspaper, which at the time saw the highest readership of any paper in the country. But competition and new technology soon led to a decline in readership, although the New York Herald continued to operate successfully until the paper merged with the New York Tribune in 1924, under the new name the New York Herald Tribune. This newly formed newspaper was largely successful for another 43 years, until it finally ceased production in the late 1960s. The 19th-century New York City marketplace was a major consumer, eyed by pottery manufacturers in Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey, and Continued on page 18

When I think of early collectors of American utilitarian pottery, the names Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969), Lura Woodside Watkins (18971982), Dr. Walter Hough (18591935), Robert Weeks (18481931) and Emily Johnston De Forest (1851-1942), Edwin Atlee Barber (1851-1916) and Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) are some of the names that come to mind. Although Albert Hastings Pitkin may not be as well-known today, his name should be recognized just as much as any other. According to the Wadsworth Antheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Conn., “A native and lifelong resident of Hartford, Albert Hastings Pitkin (1852-1917) was among the first in the country

Pierpont’s collection to the Wadsworth Antheneum.” I recently had the privilege of seeing the entire Pitkin collection, some of which has been on public display for many years. But, I do not believe its impact on early publications and museum exhibitions is widely recogized. For example, illustrated in figure 44 of Lura Woodside Watkins’ book, “Early New England Potters and Their Wares,” is what I view as one of the most iconic examples of Connecticut red earthenware production, the 12.5-inch pitcher made by Nathaniel Seymour (1763-1849) in West Hartford, Conn., circa 1800, covered with brushed slipdecoration and green dots. This object is probably the most well-known of any from Pitkin’s collection today, but I was certainly surprised when I saw the entirety of this collection, seeing that there are other objects that could be just as famous. I thought the most significant piece of pottery that I viewed was a 19th century slip-script red earthenware plate from Norwalk, Conn., which read, “James Gordon Bennett.” This script likely represents James Gordon Bennett Sr. (1795-1872), an

Auctioneers Get Most Business From The Four “D’s” “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich Selling at auction can be a risky proposition. After all, there are selling commissions and buyer’s premiums to consider, sometimes other selling expenses, and delays, all leading to an element of risk. So why in the world do people risk selling at auction? Quite simply, in many instances, auction represents the most appropriate selling option, and auctioneers get most of their business from the “Four D’s.” Death Death is unavoidable, and when it occurs, surviving family members must deal with what

Of

remains. Taxes need to be paid, and family members select items that they wish to keep and then must deal with all that is left. For many, auction is the best answer. The family can avoid doing all of the selling work, it can be a relatively quick and painless process, and it offers fair market value on those items being sold. Especially in places such as Pennsylvania, the auction method has historical precendance ingrained into much of the cultural fabric as a practice to settle an estate. Divorce Divorce is common in today’s society, and assets must be valued and divided before the divorce is finalized. Some divorces are harmonious, and property division is relatively easy. Usually it is not. Parties often widely disagree on value, and auction may represent the most appropriate selling option. It can be relatively quick and easy, and it offers fair market value.

Debt Debt repayment and/or bankruptcy often demand that property be sold to satisfy obligations. Time is usually of the essence, and auction can often be the best option. Again, it can be relatively quick and easy, and it offers fair market value on those items being sold. Sometimes this “D” is call “Desperation.” Downsizing Home downsizing is also common today. People who have spent decades accumulating personal property decide to downsize to smaller quarters. They keep what they want, family and friends take a little, and the balance must be dealt with. Auction can be relatively quick and easy, and it offers fair market value on those items being sold. So Death, Divorce, Debt, and Downsizing represent the “Four “D’s.” Auction is obviously not the only selling option. Garage sales, tag sales, and private sales are all viable options.

However, auction offers three very important advantages to these other options. Auction can be fast. Auction can represent the easiest option for many sellers. And auction offers fair market value. All of these points can be extremely important to people in these four Continued on page 23

Brastoff gave the assignment to Adams, confident in his ability to fuse the rustic images, a first for the designer’s line, with the more modern “Brastoff style.” When Adams eventually left Brastoff’s employ and opened his own studio, the all-Alaska work he produced, signed “Matthew Adams,” was almost indistinguishable in style from the designs he had earlier created for Brastoff. Objects from the Pitkin collection were also published in 1926, throughout John Spargo’s (1876-1966) book, “Early American Pottery and China.” Some of the more interesting pieces include a pair of slip-script jars that may have been made by Hervey Brooks (1779-1873) in Goshen, Conn., along with several great examples of Pennsylvania sgraffito and slipware, and a stoneware watercooler from Ashfield, Mass. I was also thrilled to learn that some of Pitkin’s collection had been painted for the Smithsonian, as part of the “Index of American Design.” Approximately 18,000 watercolor renderings of American decorative art objects from the Colonial period through the 1800s were painted between 1936 and 1942. These objects include an outstanding small red earthenware jug made in West Hartford in the late-18th or early-19th century, decorated with slip and green dots. Pitkin also apparently had some involvement with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, since some of the better pieces of his red earthenware collection were displayed at the museum in 1909. According to the Met, “The loan exhibition was arranged as part of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, commemorating the discovery of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson (ca. 1565-1611) in the year 1609, and the centenary of the first use of steam in the navigation of said river by Robert Fulton (1765-1815) in the year 1807. “Therefore, for the Hudson section, advantages have been taken of the opportunity which America affords today of illustrating, by original examples, the great art of the Dutch painters of the 17th century; for the Fulton section a representative collection has been brought together illustrative of the fine arts in America from the Colonial period down to the end of the first quarter of the 19th century.” In spite of that, as I looked over object after object from Pitkin’s collection, I saw on a bottom shelf what I now consider to be one of the best red earthenware washbowls in existence from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. In fact, I cannot find any evidence to prove that this bowl has been published or exhibited outside of the museum. This remarkable bowl was likely made by Anthony Wise

Here is a great slip-decorated red earthenware dish. Virginia and, by chance, maybe even North Carolina. Pitkin was clearly a passionate collector, but more than that, his interests were not only limited to local production. He undoubtedly had an appreciation for wares made all over the country, and other early collectors must have influenced him in the same way that his collection motivated some of the early American pottery authors and museums to feature some of his prized possessions in the early-to-mid-20th century. His treasures, assembled very early, make up a collection that should be more widely known today. Baecher (1824-89), a German immigrant considered to be one of the most accomplished Shenandoah Valley potters of the 19th century. The magnificent double-handled bowl was manufactured with an atypical glaze for this region, with a soap dish attached to the back. The embellished decoration included three coiled clay strips on the back of the bowl, as well as impressed decoration all over the rim and handles, and a beautifully executed perched bird along the rim of the soap dish. This stylistic bird is considered to be an indicator of Baecher’s work. According to Dr. Gene Comstock’s book, “The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region,” “Baecher was born in 1824 in Bavaria, Germany, and he learned his trade from this father. In 1848, he immigrated to the United States via Ellis Island. After a few years of working in Adams County, Pa., Baecher settled in Fredrick County, Va., where he produced pottery for the remainder of his career.” Nonetheless, as my visit to the Wadsworth Antheneum was winding down for the day, it became apparent that while some of the pieces must have been found locally, there were others that probably traveled by way of pickers and antiques dealers before they finally made their way into the hands of Pitkin. There was great pottery from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, possibly Maryland,

Portrait Of British Military Officer Who Fought In America Joins Colonial Williamsburg Collection The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has recently acquired its first portrait by the well-known, 18th-century British landscape and portrait painter Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-97). Equally compelling is its subject matter, as it is rare to be able to show the faces of those who were involved in events that led to the American Revolution, and especially those who spent time in the Williamsburg area. Captain Richard Bayly (d. 1764), an Irishman who served in America with the 44th Regiment during the French and Indian War, sat for this

portrait circa 1760 after his return to Britain, in the uniform he wore in America. “The faces of early America’s military officers are largely lost to time,” said Ghislain d’Humières, Colonial Williamsburg’s executive director and senior vice president, core operations. “At Colonial Williamsburg, we are proud to be able to include their likenesses within our paintings collections and humanize their stories for our visitors in an accessible, visual manner.” Acquiring the Bayly portrait within months after the

portrait of Major Patrick Campbell (a Scottish officer who served in the British lines at the Siege of Yorktown) came into the Colonial Williamsburg collection presented an exciting opportunity to the curators there. To be able to show the people behind the series of events that led to the Revolution and to better tell the story of the French and Indian War is compelling to further the foundation’s mission of authentically telling America’s enduring history. Laura Pass Barry, Juli Grainger curator of paintings,

drawings and sculpture, added, “We have an extraordinary opportunity to visually bookend the two most important events in early American military history, the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, with this painting and the Campbell portrait and tell a very full and personal story of the acts that transpired on American soil.” According to Erik Goldstein, senior curator of mechanical arts and numismatics, Richard Bayly was commissioned a lieutenant in the 35th Regiment in October 1745 and transferred to the

at Hampton, Va., in late February 1755 where he spent a few weeks between Hampton and Williamsburg, likely preparing his men for war. In the famed “Braddock’s Defeat,” fought outside of today’s Pittsburgh on July 9, 1755, Bayly’s regiment suffered severely, with seven officers killed and nine wounded. Bayly and George Washington were among the few unwounded AngloAmerican officers who fought in the disastrous event. Bayly was promoted to captain of the 44th Regiment in July 1757 and served in America until late 1760. When he returned to the British Isles, he sat for this portrait by Joseph Wright of Derby. Wright of Derby is best known for a series of works of industrial and scientific subjects. Today he is celebrated as one of the most accomplished British artists of the 18th century. This portrait was made relatively early in the artist’s career during a short period of time that he spent in the Midlands, several years after his training in London with the celebrated portraitist Thomas Hudson. Wright of Derby later gained a reputation for his nocturnal works experimenting with unusual lighting effects and also his portrayal of contemporary scientific subjects, canvases of which he exhibited and made available to a wider audience by employing engravers to reproduce. The portrait was purchased through the generosity of the Friends of Colonial Williamsburg Collection Funds. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg remain open during construction of an entirely donor-funded $41.7 million expansion. Additional information about the Art Museums and Colonial Williamsburg as well as tickets are available online at www.colonialwilliamsburg.co m, by calling 855-296-6627, and by following Colonial Williamsburg on Facebook.

These groups were a soft target for the press, with newspapers running frequent stories on their conflation of social status and civic duty. “The formation of another colonial society,” wrote a social columnist, in 1894, “shows that patriotism is by no means wanting in the smart set of New-York.” One Continued on page 23

Portrait chose to wear his silver-laced “red coat” uniform of the 44th Regiment with its dark yellow lapels, cuffs and waistcoat. A beautiful silver shoulder knot, called an aiguillette, hangs from his right shoulder, and his cocked hat is tucked under his left arm. The painting was owned by the subject’s sister and inscribed as such on the reverse of the stretcher: “B. Bayly Jan.r Picture of her/Brother Richard Bayly Oct.r 1764.” While the subject matter and his American service initially attracted the attention of the Colonial Williamsburg curators, the added incentive to acquire the painting was that it was well-documented by a noteworthy and significant painter. The artist’s account book lists a “Capt. Bailey. £6. 6s” among sitters at Derby circa 1760. Despite the misspelling of the subject’s surname, the curators at Colonial Williamsburg believe it is highly likely this is the same person given Bayly’s promotion to the rank of captain in 1757. Bayly held that rank in the 44th Foot when he returnd home to Britain. He became major of the 108th regiment about a year later and served with that unit until his death in 1764.

no means wanting in the smart set of New-York.” One wit even recommended some new names, including “Colonial Crones.” The irreverence seems unkind in light of the many important preservation projects undertaken by these groups. In the case of the Colonial Dames, some of the blame must be borne by the ladies themselves. They did not conceal their odd customs and fantasies, with the result that they usually made the news for all the wrong reasons. Their parties were held to commemorate obscure anniversaries. Menus were based on family recipes and served in the old family silver. In extreme cases, the guests wore Colonial costume. There was poetry, too. Mrs. Ferris went so far as to publish her rhymes, which evoked the faraway days of Dutch rule, when New Amsterdam was a “queer strange land with funny redmen.” The restoration of the Van Cortlandt House was less newsworthy. The project was a tribute to the steely force of good manners. A delegation of Colonial Dames went to Albany (the state capitol) to meet with the governor and legislators. Historic

preservation was, at this time, largely a matter for private initiative, and the government officials were happy to accede to the Colonial Dames’ plans. City Hall was also supportive, and granted the association a 25-year lease in exchange for assuming the renovation and operating costs. It took a little more than a year to convert the house into a museum. From April 1896, when they obtained the lease, to the following May, they fixed up the house, furnishing it with 2,000 objects from the Colonial and Revolutionary era. At a time when the Metropolitan Museum of Art

antiquesandauctionnews.net was being endowed with the most fantastic treasures, the Dames were busy gathering up old punch bowls and spinning wheels. Many objects were heirlooms, hence the confident and sometimes fanciful histories provided by the donors. The Van Cortlandt House was formally opened as a museum on May 28, 1897. Cortlandts. The West Bed Chamber was the room occupied by Washington. His presence is suggested today not by odds and ends of doubtful provenance, but by the sort of fashionable furnishings he would have found when he retired for the night. A kneehole dressing table (a Van Cortlandt heirloom) and a Worcester tea service are some of the most stylish things in the house. At a time when textiles were the costliest part of decorating, ensuite upholstery was affordable only by the wealthiest. Here a blue and white fabric of a pattern popular during the 18th century is used for the bed hangings and furniture. The modern reproduction was made using the traditional resist-dyeing technique.

There is also a greater awareness of the people who made the Van Cortlandts’ life so comfortable. The family employed many servants and farm workers, most of whom lived in out-buildings on the estate. They were also slave owners, a fact that went unmentioned in the early guidebooks.
