Booming Market For Pop-Culture Memorabilia

Powered $2.5 Million Result At Hake’s Aurora Superman/Spider-Man Model Kit Combo Brings $54,516

Hake’s highlight-packed March 19 and 20 auction of pop-culture rarities closed the books at $2.5 million and sent a resounding signal about the strength of the current market for high-grade, market-fresh memorabilia. The abundance of record-setting and estimate-defying prices attested to the growing demand for superhero toys of the 1960s and elusive figures from the “Star Wars” galaxy. Like-new model kits with provenance from the Janusey Brothers collection ran the table, commanding prices that were nothing

The Theodore Roosevelt/ Charles E. Hughes William H. Taft “Security Harmony Justice” 1916 campaign button intended to be distributed at an Oct. 3, 1916, event honoring Hughes, but rejected by Roosevelt, who did not approve of Taft’s image being included, extremely fine condition, the nicer of two known examples, sold for $25,960 against an estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

This 1860 glazed cotton parade flag is emblazoned “For President Abram Lincoln For Vice President Hannibal Hamlin.” In excellent condition attributable to its having been sheltered from light, it realized $42,185 against an estimate of $20,000-$35,000.

astonishing. A boxed and factory-sealed Aurora model kit duo consisting of a copyright 1963 NPP Inc. “Superman” (second version) kit No. 462100 and copyright 1966 Marvel Comics Group “Spider-Man” kit No. 477-100 topped the two-day event. Sixty years ago, the kits would have retailed for $1 each, but combined in a promotional package for WT Grant variety stores, they were factory-labeled with the pennywise price of $1.58. The superhero combo teamed up to achieve $54,516 against a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-$5,000.

A “monstrous” price was paid for another boxed and

unused Aurora model kit with Janusey Brothers provenance. Copyrighted in 1966, “Godzilla’s Go Kart” was produced in low numbers and distributed to a mere handful of stores near Aurora’s Long Island (N.Y.) headquarters, making it a rare item from the getgo. The auction entry, the only boxed example Hake’s has handled in its 57 years of operation, raced across the finish line to a world-record $36,344 against an estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

An original oversize 22-by-28 inch cardboard window poster promoting “James Brown and the Famous Flames’” March 8, 1962, appearance at W.C. Taylor High School in Warrenton, Va., is the only example of its type known to Hake’s experts, and sold for $8,697 against an estimate of $2,000-$5,000.

“Star Wars” fans were in the fight for a 1984 Palitoy “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” Tri-Logo 70 Back-B blister card containing a 3.75-inch action figure of General Madine. One of the rarest of all production “Star Wars” figures, its packaging includes text in four languages: English, Spanish, French and Italian. AFA-graded 60 Y-Ex and the first of its type to be offered by Hake’s in any condition, it sold for a recordsetting $42,242 against an estimate of $10,000-$20,000. There was also interest in a 1978 Kenner “Star Wars” early bird mailaway kit, the trailblazing mini-collection that marked the beginning of action-figure production for the storied franchise. The kit includes

Zelma’s Emporium To Host Benefit For New Oxford Area Historical Society

On Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the New Oxford Area Historical Society (NOAHS) and Zelma’s Emporium will join together to co-host an exciting benefit event, New Oxford’s Antiques Appraisal Faire, at the historic Livingston Shoe Factory, located at 11 Water St. (just off West Golden Lane), New Oxford, Pa. Since May 2020, this historic commercial location has been the home of one of New Oxford’s leading businesses, Zelma’s Emporium. Given the role antiques businesses have played in New Oxford’s commercial history, this newly

envisioned antique appraisal event will build on the town’s reputation and bring together a cadre of trained appraisers. In this way, event attendees will have the chance to learn about the history and value of the treasures they bring and enjoy the day’s festivities at the same time. Attendees may bring up to three items for appraisal. Each item appraisal will be assessed a $15 fee, with proceeds being donated to the New Oxford Area Historical Society. No preregistration is required, and cash,

Excel Original Action Press Photograph Of Ty Cobb Sells For $7,200

Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 660-lot sale held on March 7. Prices noted include the company’s 20 percent buyer’s premium.

The majority of the baseball-themed antiques came from the collection of photographic historian and author Mark Rucker. Rucker’s collection consisted of the home-run heroes in this exciting sale. Here are some grand slam results from that category.

An original photo team portrait of the Cuban Almendares baseball club was the top lot and made $8,400. This framed under glass albumen print was taken in Key West, Fla., by A. J. Estevez, ca. 1908-09. It included 21 players and coaches and measured 13-by-16 inches (framed). The exceedingly rare image featured several legendary players of the Cuban league and was on the cover and gatefold

image of Mark Rucker’s “A Thousand Words” (2022).

An original action press photograph of Ty Cobb (1886-1961) at bat was a hit at $7,200. This 7-by-9-inch sepia-toned original image pictured Cobb in his Detroit

Tigers uniform with bat in hand during a game. It was signed Ty Cobb in pencil on verso.

A Toledo Baseball Club International League High Grade Marguerite Havana Cigars schedule poster sold for $6,600. Published in Toledo by Locke & Trowbridge in 1889, the lithograph poster included a schedule for the club, surrounded by players in a diamond shape, with the team president and manager in the upper corners and was believed to be the only copy extant. A fold-out postcard of the 1909 Champion Pittsburgh Pirates realized $5,280. It was produced in Pittsburgh, Pa., by the W. M. Dick Company in 1909. This rare, unused lithographed mailer included fold-out portraits of 17 players, as well as a double-panel photo of Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. A promotional postcard for the 1911 Western League Champions Denver Grizzlies scored $4,800. It was printed in Denver, Co., and marked, “Compliments Fry & McGill Motor Supply Co., 1911.” This lithographed example featured an illustration of a bear in a uniform, up at bat. According to Potter’s experts, this unused example was only one of three known extant.

A promotional postcard for the 1911 Western League Champion Denver Grizzlies was estimated at $500-$700 and sold for $4,800.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Leave Those Tags In Place

Often, especially if you collect antique porcelain, you will flip a piece over and

find an old label on the bottom--not the new price tag, but sometimes a collectors label identifying the history or prior ownership of the object. Other times you might find an old label from a gallery, auction house or museums showing an exhibition or sale history.

Sadly, these tags are routinely removed by many dealers. They fear that a buyer will see the tags and, in doing their homework, find out what was paid for the piece. Knowing the price the dealer paid could, in their minds, impact

their mark-up and final price. While I do respect the need for a dealer to keep the price he or she paid secret, sometimes the tags provide clues to the history of the object.

Recently, I purchased a piece of pottery, and stuck to the bottom was a tag from a well-known auction house specializing in pottery. The tag’s appearance actually helped me to make up my mind about the sale since I knew they routinely handle quality objects. And after I made the decision to buy it, I was able to research it and

find out about the history of the prior owner. This was duly noted by me and perhaps someday will be of intellectual and/or intrinsic value to a researcher.

I recall my old friend, Clarke Hess, whose heirs arranged for the auction catalog of his collection to contain detailed provenance on all the pieces. That catalog with the provenance still remains online and thus contemporary collectors can trace the history of their objects back to the research that Clarke had originally done and which was published posthumously in the catalog.

We collect because we are passionate about the objects we seek and their histories. None of us are naive enough to believe that we are the first ones to see and appreciate these treasures. Rather, we understand that we are temporary custodians of these objects and their history. We will pass them on, one way

A Peach Of A Baseball Card: Ty Cobb’s Rare 1909-11 T206 Sells For $432,000 Spring Sports Card Catalog Auction Bats Over $10.1

The star of Heritage’s March 22 and 23 Spring Sports Card Catalog Auction was a real Georgia Peach; it was the 1909-11 Ty Cobb T206 card graded Good+ 2.5 by SGC that made its auction debut and realized $432,000. That bested pre-auction expectations for the rarity nicknamed “The Cobb/Cobb,” which is even harder to score than the Honus Wagner T206 considered among the hobby’s holiest grails.

Its scarcity stems from

A Babe Ruth, then still a thin hurler for the Boston Red Sox when this M1015 Sporting News Blank Back came out in 1916, the only VG/EX 4 example in PSA’s population guide, sold for $348,000.

the fact it was a small-run card made for a little-distributed, short-lived product: Cobb’s “granulated cut plug smoking tobacco.” Historians believe this card, featuring Ty Cobb against a bloodred background, its reverse advertising ‘Ty Cobb’ King of the Smoking Tobacco World,” was considered a “premium” offering. That was certainly the case as collectors tussled over this card.

The Spring Sports Card Catalog Auction was a nearsell-out event, realizing $10,169,406 thanks to the more than 2,450 bidders worldwide who participated. There were home runs and slam dunks throughout the twoday event, which saw estimates toppled and records set up and down the roster, such as a 1933 Goudey Napoleon Lajoie graded PSA Good 2, which was actually issued in 1934 and sold for $41,654, a record for the grade.

Chief among the auction’s stacked lineup was the man who slugged his way into the pantheon of baseball’s heaviest hitters: George Hermann “Babe” Ruth, still a scrawny

hurler for the Boston Red Sox when this M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back landed in some lucky kid’s mitt in 1916. This lone VG/EX 4 example in PSA’s population guide realized $348,000.

This sale had no shortage of famous, familiar and coveted cardboard. Look no further than two of the auction’s top performers: the 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps card, which heralded the birth of an industry and a hobby, and the 1986 Michael Jordan Fleer

Million

offering, whose red-whiteand-blue bordered slam dunk has become basketball collectors’ most defining (and chased-after) image in recent years. This auction featured a Mantle PSA EX-MT 6 that sold for $204,000 and a Jordan PSA Gem Mint 10 that realized $210,000, both strong prices.

“That Cobb came to us having never been graded or having been to auction, and it was bound to steal the headline given its significance and Continued on page 11

My wife just purchased a quilt at an online auction. It is graphically quite striking, and the auction house provided some background on the maker’s family. This information is being written down, and a tag is being attached to the quilt so that the next owner will have some knowledge that it is a northern Collector

Dauphin County quilt. Similarly, at the museum, we recently acquired some Chinese export porcelain from the 18th century. Several of the forms were very rare, and so we reached back through the auctioneer to the family to see if we could find out if it had descended with them or was a later purchase. As it turned out, the latter was true, and several of the pieces had Eleanor Gordon provenance. This was all dutifully recorded on the catalog sheets so that the history of these pieces would be documented for the future.

So next time you buy something with an old tag on it, think twice before peeling it off. Record the information, and let the next owner decide if it is worth keeping. or another, to another generation, either by selling or giving it away now or when we pass. To my mind, part of our obligation as temporary custodians of these objects is to document the pieces for the future. Tell their stories as to where they came from and ensure that the next owner has some clue.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Fortunoff Collection Of 19th Century Aesthetic Movement

Porcelain Slated For April 23

Strawser Auction Group To Hold Sale

Anyone who grew up in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area will likely recognize the name Fortunoff, the high-end retailer of housewares, silverware, lighting fixtures and jewelry. Few are probably aware, however, that the matriarch of the Fortunoff family, Helene Fortunoff (19332021), was a passionate collector of fine antique ceramics.

Now, the entire collection that Helene assembled with her second husband, Robert Grossman, will come up for bid in an online-only auction slated for Tuesday, April 23, starting at 6 p.m. Eastern time. The sale, comprising 243 lots, will be conducted by Strawser Auction Group. Online bidding will be via LiveAuctioneers. com. Absentee and telephone bids will also be accepted. The Strawser Auction Group facility is located at 200 N. Main St., in Wolcottville, Ind.

The auction is titled

“The Fortunoff Collection of 19th-Century Aesthetic Movement Porcelain,” reflecting the main focus of the collection. Helene had a passion for Japanese design and collected Japanese lacquer pieces. The specific styles in the auction were mostly inspired by Japan, including important pieces designed by the Father of Modernism, Christopher Dresser. “Although very large, the collection was very specific based on the highest quality, rarity and strength of design,” said Nick Boston, a dealer who first met Helene and Robert in January 2007 at the New York Ceramics Fair. “Helene had an eye for quality. Her background in jewelry passed on to her taste in porcelain.” Boston called the collection “without a doubt the finest collection of Aesthetic Movement porcelain in the world,” one that focused mainly on Minton and Royal

and Coalport, “companies who were supplying Gilded Age U.S. homes in the 19th century,” furthered Boston.

Numerous pieces in the auction are expected to vie foe top lot honors. Chief among them is a pair of rare Worcester

Fortunoff

decorated with a cobalt blue panel of Italianate masks, scrolls, caryatids and fantastic animal heads and each with a large panel of pate sur pate flowers.

A large, ca. 1875 Royal Worcester Aesthetic Movement moon flask decorated with blue and white Japanese style fauna and a 22-carat gilded butterfly, all against a black ground with a 22-cart gilded scrolling dragon to the neck, should fetch $1,500$2,500. The pair to this moon flask was donated by Fortunoff to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it now resides.

A pair of quality Royal Worcester Aesthetic Movement moon flasks, ca. 1875, each decorated in the Japanese Shibayama style depicting birds and blossoms against a speckled ivory ground, both with square section faux bronze handles, all upon faux hardwood style bases, were purchased at the New York Ceramics Fair 2002.

Helene’s son, David, said he can trace the collection to its beginnings when his mother and Robert were entertaining someone from the Fine Arts Society who noticed a moon flask that had been in the family for ages. “He identified it as Christopher Dresser,”

A Mintons Aesthetic Movement amphora vase, ca. 1865, designed by Christopher Dresser, white ground amphora body decorated with a panel of stylized flowers, in a turquoise enameled fixed stand, is estimated at $250-$350.

David recounted, “and he offered to buy it on the spot. This got Helene’s attention right away, and she had to learn more.”

She started to research Christopher Dresser and went to a porcelain show in New York. “That’s where she met Nick Boston,” David said. “Robert had noticed a moon flask similar to one he remembered from someone’s library in England. This drew them to the booth. Helene ended up buying out Nick’s entire booth, and their friendship and Helene’s interest was forever solidified.”

Robert and Helene found a new hobby they could enjoy together, and it could be an activity they pursued on their travels. The couple sought out antique dealers wherever they travelled, making purchases in England, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, among other places. As Robert once remarked, “Wherever the British had lived, they were sure to have left some porcelain behind.”

“Helene’s collection, and the way it was displayed, was like the interior of a jewelry box,” stated Boston. “This is what these pieces were designed for, for the Gilded Age homes. The great 19th-century New York designers and decorators, the Herter Brothers, designed homes, for Vanderbilt for example, to look like the interior of a jewelry box. Helene accomplished this, cabinet after cabinet beautifully displayed and beautifully lit. It really was a sight to behold.”

Helene and Robert donated portions of their collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University and the Art Institute of Chicago. “For a collector to have their collection displayed¬†in a major museum is the highest accolade,” according to Boston. “Helene was a visionary. She had incredible taste and was a very generous philanthropist. Her foresight and generosity have left a most incredible legacy in the world of 19th-century design and ceramics.”

Artist-initialed and dated ’83, the depiction with three blades was adapted for subsequent fourblade iterations, including Matt Peak’s art for the final U.S. release poster. It went for $15,340.

Perhaps buoyed by the fact that 2024 is a presidential election year, early campaign collectibles were hot sellers. An 1860 glazed cotton parade flag emblazoned “For President Abram Lincoln For Vice President Hannibal Hamlin” is considered a classic design and comes from the legendary 1980s “quilt find,” a long-hidden trove of two dozen campaign flags from the 1860-68 elections. In excellent condition due to its having been sheltered from light for so long, the beguiling banner was chased to $42,185 against a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$35,000.

A Theodore Roosevelt/ Charles E. Hughes/William H. Taft “Security Harmony Justice” 1916 campaign button with images of all three men came to auction with a historical footnote in tow. Along with any others like it that may have been produced, the button was supposed to be distributed at an Oct. 3, 1916, event in Hughes’ honor, but it was vehemently rejected by Roosevelt, who did not approve of Taft’s image being included. The button’s extremely fine condition makes it the nicer of two known survivors of its type. It sold for $25,960 against an estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

Provenance from the John Grossman collection speaks volumes and no doubt added a golden touch to a complete 1932 U.S. Caramel set of 30 portrait/bio cards depicting American presidents and retaining its “American Heroes Caramel” wax-paper wrapper. Against an estimate of $1,000-$2,000, the set easily claimed victory at $12,338.

Collectors of vintage concert signage said, “Please, please, please,” when a window poster promoting “James Brown and the Famous Flames’” March 8, 1962, appearance at WC Taylor High School in Warrenton, Va., came up for bid. Its exciting graphics feature “Mr Dynamite” against a DayGlo orange background, together with several opening acts in a yellow vignette. The only example of its type known to Hake’s experts, it landed “on the good foot” at $8,697 against

specialness,” says Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions. “But in many ways, the story of this auction is the strong prices across the board, the four-figure cards that hit five figures, the climbers going up the ranks of the record-holders. Every auction has a narrative, like the sealed case of hockey cards selling for millions. For me, this weekend served as a wonderful reminder that the state of this hobby is strong,” continued Ivy.

At 77, Nolan Ryan is still throwing gas, as evidenced by his 1969 Topps solo in a PSA Gem Mint 10, one of only three known, which realized $180,000.

It should come as no surprise that Willie Mays, the greatest living ballplayer, joined the elite company in this event, which featured one of the best examples of his signed 1951 Bowman rookie card. What makes this PSA VG-EX 4, PSA/DNA Auto 8 so exceptional is its backstory. There are a scant 31 signed Mays Bowmans in PSA’s registry, but he wrote on this one while still a young player and not yet a revered legend. Heritage had never offered such a significant slice of Mays’ baseball card history, which realized $126,000.
