Corning responded with an opal/milk glass to fill the need, Barber said. Vintage Pyrex bowls, refrigerator sets and casserole dishes have replaced pink and green Depression glass as a most-wanted item, according to dealers and the author of an upcoming book. “Vintage opal Pyrex is the new hot collectible,” said Michael Barber, whose book is due out May 1.“Pyrex is easy to find, affordable, and it seems that most collectors actually use it in their dayto-day cooking.” Opal Pyrex is an off-white glass with colors or designs fired on to the glass. Bowl sets introduced in 1945, at $2.50, included four mixing bowls, each in a solid color, known as primaries. Later, new colors and patterns such as Pink Gooseberry became popular. Tommy Niner, who helped Barber with the book and is a dealer at Pine Hills Antiques in Adamstown, Pa., said there was a time when every couple received a set of Pyrex when they got married. SHOPS & CENTERS Two Important Examples Of Tiffany Studios Glass On View At Corning Museum owns three other examples of Tiffany lamps made between 1895 and 1905. Together, this collection of lamps demonstrates the ingenuity, evolution, and varied creations of Tiffany Studios. Also recently installed is an important example of a stained glass window by famed Tiffany Studios ecclesiastical designer Frederick Wilson. Commissioned in 1901 by the Brainard family in memory of Waterville banker and hops merchant Charles Green, “The Righteous Shall Receive a Crown of Glory” is remarkable for its large scale and for its integration of different types of glass and glass jewels, which Tiffany Studios pioneered. The image portrayed on the window - of two angels escorting the soul of the deceased up marble stairs toward a large cross supported by three angels and into the light of heaven - is inspired by the New Testament passage 1 Peter 5:4, “And when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.” “In the 1890s, Tiffany hired Frederick Wilson, who

May 10, 1908, simultaneously at the Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, W. Va., and in the Wanamaker Auditorium in Philadelphia, Pa. By 1909, the celebrations had expanded to other major cities in the United States. On May 8, 1914, the U. S. Congress passed a declaration designating the second Sunday of May to be Mother’s Day, which was subsequently signed by President Woodrow Wilson. Since that time, the idea has gained popularity throughout the world and now over 150 countries have established a special day to give honor to mothers, albeit during different times of the year. This year, besides your mom, why not celebrate your sister, your daughter, or your friend on this important day? All women, whether they have children or not, are still well worth recognition and honor! At Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., we

As spring makes her longawaited arrival, it’s time to peek our heads out from under the covers and begin to celebrate all the beauty and joy life brings. What better way to do that than to honor those who gave us life in the first place – our moms! Although some version of it is celebrated throughout the year in many different cultures, Mother’s Day is a purely American invention. Anna Jarvis, who was born in West Virginia but who later relocated to West Chester, Pa., is credited with originating Mother’s Day as a memorial to her mother back in the early 1900s. to the area. Why Pennsylvania? Because Wallace Nutting, America’s most famous seller of handcolored photography during the 1900-1930s Golden Age of Hand-Colored Photography, took literally hundreds of photographs in eastern Pennsylvania, many of which were included in his famous book published in 1924, “Pennsylvania Beautiful.” The Wallace Nutting Collectors Club has been holding an annual convention each year since 1974, and this year the club decided to return to historic Pennsylvania and visit its local Nutting attractions. This year’s auction and convention will be held at the Ft. Washington Hilton Garden Inn (530 West Pennsylvania Avenue, Ft. Washington, Pa.). Day one of the Wallace Nutting Weekend will begin on Friday, May 17, with a 500-plus lot auction conducted by Wallace Nutting author and auctioneer Michael Ivankovich.

Collection at The Corning Museum of Glass The Corning Museum of Glass holds many treasures created by the Tiffany Studios. In addition to its monumental stained glass windows, the Museum’s collection features an outstanding and diverse collection of Tiffany glass vessels, including long-term loans from the Rockwell Museum of Western Art in Corning, N.Y. The Museum’s Tiffany lamps on display in the permanent galleries are enriched by the long-term loan of two important leaded glass lamps from the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in Queens, N.Y. The Museum’s Rakow Research Library holdings of Tiffany Studios materials include drawings from the design department that Clara Driscoll oversaw, trade catalogs, cartoons, and unique archival materials from Arthur Nash. Nash and his sons operated the glasshouse that made Tiffany Studios’ unique and sought-after glass. Nash’s documents include personal notebooks filled with glass recipes, coded keys to a variety of formulas, letters, and handwritten notes. About The Corning Museum of Glass The Corning Museum of Glass is the foremost authori-

ty on the art, history, science, and design of glass. It is home to the world’s most important collection of glass, including the finest examples of glassmaking spanning 3,500 years. Live glassblowing demonstrations (offered at the Museum, on the road, and at sea on Celebrity Cruises) bring the material to life. Make Your Own Glass experiences are held daily at the Museum and enable visitors to create work in a state-ofthe-art glassmaking studio. The campus in Corning includes a year-round glassmaking school, The Studio, and the Rakow Research Library, the world’s preeminent collection of materials on the art and history of glass. Located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Wine Country of New York State, the Museum is open daily, yearround. Children and teens, 19 and under, receive free admission.

department with new ideas. We are particularly fortunate to know who commissioned this window, why it was commissioned, and where it was originally installed. Without the dedicatory panel, the window’s history might have been lost, since over the course of its 50-year history, Tiffany Studios produced an estimated 5,000 windows, many of them with religious subjects.” Donated to the Museum in 1996 by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Randall, the window recently underwent extensive conservation and was lent to the Museum of Biblical Art in New York City for their critically acclaimed exhibition, Louis C. Tiffany and the Art of Devotion. The window is now featured prominently in the Museum’s permanent collection galleries, alongside Tiffany’s “Window with Hudson River Landscape.” This secular window - one of the Museum’s most popular and most photographed objects - provides an important counterpoint to the sacred window, demonstrating Tiffany Studios’ mastery of all subjects, and particularly of sensitive depictions of the natural world. of a rare VOX Beatles guitar played by both John Lennon and George Harrison, which will be on exclusive display for a limited time at the Museum of Style Icons in Ireland. The exhibit will be open until May 8 at the museum, which is located in Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland. The guitar will then leave the museum and journey back to the U.S., where it will be auctioned in New York on Saturday, May 18, at the Julien’s Auctions Music Icons event. The rare VOX guitar, played by both legendary artists, is what true rock ‘n’ roll is made of. Harrison played the guitar while practicing “I Am the Walrus during The Magical Mystery Tour, and Lennon used it while recording a video session for “Hello, Goodbye. The striking custom

Extraordinary Recent Discovery

Custer Materials Sold At James D. Julia, Inc. Archive of Custer materials included an extremely rare Custer Valor Medal together with a fragment of the original Confederate Appomattox surrender flag At James D. Julia, goals include bringing their global community of customers the very finest and most interesting antiques and artifacts possible. At the recent Winter 2013 Extraordinary Firearms Auction, which grossed over $13 million and featured remarkable militaria spanning four centuries, many lots also came with breathtaking provenances. This one in particular, with both deep Civil War and family roots, really caught people’s attention. The Col. George G. Briggs Civil War Collection: The lot, number 1480, was a breathtaking collection of Civil War materials. These items, consigned by a Rhode Island family who were direct descendants of Col. George G. Briggs, were estimated at $45,000 to 65,000. Briggs was the last commander of the 7th Michigan Cavalry and a trusted friend and confidante of Lt.Colonel George A. Custer, the famous officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. After spirited and competitive bidding, the package sold for $184,000, including the buyer’s premium. The Briggs collection had two spectacula highlights. The first was a framed letter written by Custer’s wife to Briggs featuring a snippet of the actual Confederate “flag

of truce” from the Appomattox Courthouse, a chip of wood from the desk that Generals Lee and Grant signed the surrender document on that ended the war, and a piece of the red bandana Custer famously wore at the surrender. The second was a gold Tiffany-made Custer Valor Medal, a private military award authorized by Custer and awarded only to heroic and favored members of the 7th Michigan Cavalry. There are probably no more than 4 or 5 of these Custer gold medals in existence today, and this was the first gold medal presented to an officer of this type known to ever come to auction. The collection also included wartime documents concerning Briggs; numerous cabinet photographs of Briggs; additional badges including Briggs’ gold and silver enameled Sheridan Cavalry Corp badge and MOLLUS (Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States) Membership Badge; a reunion era souvenir Gettysburg presentation polychrome cane and wooden gavel; a 6-foot section of Col. Briggs’ silk sash; and other military memorabilia. Although these cherished and historically important items were part of the seller’s family legacy for more than a century, the family realized it was time to move these trea-

sures into new hands upon the passing of their oldest generation. This was a difficult decision, given how the collection had become such an integral part of the family on many levels. The seller and the James D. Julia team, including President Jim Julia himself, met to review the precious items in early January 2013. The seller, understandably nervous and emotional about parting with such irreplaceable items, was immediately put at ease about the decision to sell the items as well as the auction process itself as a result of this meeting. She recalls, “Right from the start, the attention to myself and the ‘package’ was impeccable. The publicity, work, and time expended by James D. Julia honored the significance of Col. Briggs as well as making me feel as if what was in my best interests was of primary concern. I was concerned about finding a buyer and getting a healthy price for the collection, but I also wanted it to go to the right party, one that appreciated and valued the items as I did during my time of stewardship. I am certain that Julia’s made sure that anyone who should be aware about the opportunity to purchase collection did.” This important transaction required resources and expertise from both Julia’s Fairfield, Maine, headquar-

ters, as well as the company’s full service office in Woburn, Massachusetts, which delivers first rate identification, valuation, and auction services to customers in the Boston and southern New England areas. According to James D. Julia, the company’s president and a Civil War historian himself, “This collection is extraordinary, not only for the individual items, but for the depth of the story it tells as a grouping. Holding the Valor Medal in my hands was a once in a lifetime experience and extremely meaningful. We have handled Custer related artifacts over the years here at Julia’s, but this particular package was by far the most personal, and perhaps one of

the more complete, of any in memory.” James D. Julia, Inc., one of the top ten auction antique houses in the nation, is headquartered in Fairfield, Maine. The company also has an office in Woburn, Massachusetts. In business for over 40 years, the company conducts high∆end antique, collectible, and decorative arts auctions throughout the year. Julia’s routinely establishes new world records through its sales events. Julia’s has four key divisions, including rare firearms and militaria; fine and Asian art and antiques; lamps and glass; and important toys, dolls, and antique advertising. Each division has been ranked nationally for excel-

lence and is staffed with world∆class specialists to insure fair and professional authentication, identification, and valuation services. James D. Julia is a proud recipient of the 2012 Governor’s Award for Business Excellence, which is administered by the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. This honor recognizes companies that demonstrate a high level of commitment to the community, employees, and to manufacturing or to service excellence. Julia’s next Fine Firearms auction will be held in October 2013. For more information on JamesD. Julia Inc., please visit http://www.jamesdjulia.com.

With the Boston Book Paper & Photo Expo coming at a time so close to Mother’s Day, rare and first editions of the books that our mothers read to us as children are highly prized as Mother’s Day gifts. “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McCloskey is one of these beloved books. Read over and over again by or to children, it is especially beloved in Boston, where the ducks are commemorated in bronze statues in the Public Garden. This copy has been signed on the title page in ink by the author, making it very valuable. From: Peter L. Stern & Co.

14 - - Antiques & Auction News — May 03, 2013

For a six- or seven-week period from the end of February through the end of March, a man with a driver’s license with the name of Allan Alexander allegedly began passing checks on a non-existent account. Bad checks were recieved by jewelry and antiques dealers at the Pennsbury/Chadds Ford Mall, White Barn, and Brandywine Antiques, all located in Pennsylvania. These losses were reported to the Pennsylvania State Police. The same individual allegedly passed a number of bad checks at Renninger’s and the Black Angus Malls in the Adamstown, Pa., area. Typically, he would ask for silver and gold jewelry, stating he was buying for his sons’ wives. Word got out through the dealer network and on March 23, 2013, he appeared at Ardmart Antiques Mall, 1102 Naaman’s Creek Road, in Garnet Valley, Pa. He allegedly tried to buy some jewelry; his name was recognized and his check was refused. He left, and the Bethel Township Police were called and at the mall within minutes. The police immediately went to Booth’s Corner, where his car was spotted, and he was apprehended at the Lioness Antiques concession and arrested. Ironically, some years ago the individual was caught at the same shop for passing bad checks, arrested, convicted and served 5 years for the same offense. It was later learned that a Philadelphia dealer was also a victim.
