Massachusetts Stoneware Eagle-Decorated Jug Soars
Crocker Farm Sells Rarity
For $180,000
By Karl PassA Massachusetts stoneware jug with incredibly fine incised eagle decoration sold on April 6 at Crocker Farm. The “BARNABAS EDMANDS & CO./CHARLESTOWN,” ca. 1830 jug with a large incised design of a Federal eagle realized $180,000, selling to author and scholar Rob Hunter on behalf of the William C. and Susan S. Mariner Private Foundation. The Zipps considered this among the finest examples of eagle decoration on stoneware.
“The decoration was incredibly beautiful, and the Mariners are branching out to other great examples, not just from the South,” noted Hunter. The contrast between the deep cobalt slip and light gray background, along with fine detail, created a dramatic image. Its decorative appeal and rarity of the decoration define it as one of the two finest examples of utilitarian pottery, either stoneware or redware, produced within the Boston neighborhood of Charlestown.
(The other leading Charlestown product, the “Elisabeth Tarbell/1806” stoneware jar by
Frederick Carpenter, was sold in Crocker Farm’s Spring 2021 Auction, also for $180,000).
Rich in a ceramic legacy beginning with redware production in the early 18th century, Charlestown became a major manufacturer of stoneware at the turn of the 19th century with the work of Frederick Carpenter, who used a “BOSTON” stamp to identify his ware. In 1812, he became the master potter at the Austin Street shop of Barnabas Edmands, whose maker’s mark is on this piece. Edmands was not a potter, but rather a brass founder who became a pottery owner, hiring and even partnering with Carpenter until the latter’s death in 1827.
As written in the Crocker Farm catalog, according to Lura Woodside Watkins’ book, “Early New England Potters and Their Wares,” Edmands hired out a new lead potter, Charles Collier, upon Carpenter’s death. Collier worked at the pottery for decades, and his abilities are evidenced by awards won in local 1839 and 1841 fairs for oversized stoneware vessels that he made, including a 15-gallon pitcher. Given his involvement with the pottery and years active, he
possibly created this jug. Edmands and his descendants would be a dominant force in regional stoneware production for nearly 100 years, serving as Charlestown’s sole producer of stoneware until 1905. According to Lorraine German’s “Ceramics in America” 2019 article, “The Picture of the Old Pottery,” Edmands’ son, Benjamin B. Edmands, would became a potter himself, working at the family concern until the Civil War, when he served as lieutenant in the 54th
Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the Union’s first all-black regiments, famously depicted in the Academy-award-winning movie, “Glory.”
An attributed Edmands Pottery jar of similar age to this jug, depicting a molded Federal eagle and date of the Battle of Bunker Hill on reverse, is on display at the William C.and Susan S. Mariner Southern Ceramics Gallery at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts,

Marlin 1895 Lever-Action Rifle, Screen-Used In Film “Jurassic World,” Brought $46,800

The top-selling lot, a Colt .45 Long Cartridge Single Action Army revolver originally owned by WWII hero
and major motion picture star Audie Murphy, led prices realized at a robust $90,675. Also, a Marlin 1895 lever-action rifle manufactured in 2010 and screen-used in the film “Jurassic World” took a bow at $46,800.

Barely 17 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, Murphy not only went on to become the most decorated combat soldier of WWII, but also one of the most highly decorated soldiers in U.S. history. At age 19, he received the Medal of Honor for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers in France, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. After his military career, Murphy starred in more than 40 Hollywood

The 1944 Rolex gold watch, S/N 309040, ordered from Rolex and shipped to B-25 bombardier 2nd Lt. Benjamin Elms at German Stalag Luft 3, where he was held as a WWII POW, came accompanied by extensive original Rolex documentation confirming shipment to the stalag in Hammelburg, Germany, plus receipt stamped at stalag. It sold at the upper end of its estimate range for $12,285.
A Colt Single Action Army revolver, .45 Long Colt cartridge, owned by WWII hero and Medal of Honor Winner Audie Murphy, who later starred in 40-plus Hollywood films, is one of only 244 such guns assembled in 1947-’48 under direct supervision of Harry St. John, whose personal stamp “F” appears at rear of trigger guard. “When you consider everything Audie Murphy achieved in just 45 short years, it still seems impossible. That’s why his legend endures,” said Miles King, co-owner of Milestone Auctions. “It was a tremendous honor for us to handle Audie Murphy’s personal Colt revolver. There were many inquiries about it. On auction day the bidding was brisk and boiled down to two collectors who really wanted it.” The Colt was one of only 244 guns of its type assembled in 1947-48 under the direct supervision of Harry St. John, whose personal stamp “F” appears at rear of its trigger guard. In 1958, Colt shipped the gun to Murphy’s home address in North
Hollywood. It was offered by Milestone with a 1989 Colt Archival Letter signed by Colt Historian Emeritus MS Huber. It sold at the high end of its estimate range for $90,675.
The Hollywood connection continued with the sale of a Marlin 1895 lever-action rifle manufactured in 2010 and screen-used in the 2015 film “Jurassic World.” It is one of three actual-firing Marlin 1895 lever-action rifles sent to the “Jurassic World” set in Hawaii. It came with six dummy rounds, photos of the film’s actors with the rifles, and a letter of authenticity from Point Blank Props, Henderson, Nev. The coveted Marlin sold near the midpoint of its estimate range for $46,800. “The new owner is a younger collector who is a big Jurassic fan. He also bought the Searcy 500 Nitro Express double rifle made

This 1912 Colt .41 caliber Double Action Army Special revolver belonged to legendary Texas Ranger Capt. Manuel T. ‘Lone Wolf’ Gonzaullas (1891-1977), who is enshrined in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. With mother-of-pearl grips, backstrap engraved (likely at Colt factory) with Gonzaullas’ name and “TEXAS RANGER,” the gun went at midpoint of estimate range for $11,100.
Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert
This Week: Summer Cottage Communities: Chautauquas, Camp Meetings And Spiritualist Camps
By Peter SeibertRegular readers know that I have been slaving away this past year over a new manuscript that was just published by History Press on summer cottage communities. The book is called “Summer Cottage Communities: Chautauquas, Camp Meetings and Spiritualist Camps.” Having grown up in southcentral Pennsylvania, I am very familiar with places like Mount Gretna, Mount Lebanon, Eagles Mere and Ocean Grove. These were early summer communities established in the 19th century to provide both physical and spiritual refreshment and rebuilding.
In the course of working on the book, I found several fascinating references as to how summer cottages were decorated. Most of the cottages were designed in one of a small number of styles that ranged from the Victorian era shingle look to the Adirondack bungalow. The rooms inside tended to be small, which was off-set by the large porch that served as an outdoor parlor/living room/ family room.
The famed muckraker journalist from Titusville (Crawford County), Pa., Ida Tarbell, wrote in the early 20th century about how homes looked like picnic housekeeping. The reference pointed to how a mix of furniture was pulled out of attic storage to decorate one’s summer home. A Federal card table might get re-used for puzzles on the porch. Or a Victorian era bureau might be painted white to fit in with the Arts and Crafts look of a bedroom. And at the center of Tarbell’s description of picnic housekeeping was the ubiquitous rope bed turned into a bench.
Auction goers in most of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and
Maryland know exactly what I am talking about. This is a spindle (sometimes called a Jenny Lind) bed where the headboard and part of the rails are re-used to make a stubby little porch bench. As a boy, I recall many of these still in use on porches out in the Lebanon Valley. They were a way of re-using the bed after its original use fell away. These converted beds to benches were very popular in summer cottages throughout the region.
Other decorating elements included the use of Navajo weavings. At Mount Gretna in Lebanon County, dealers in Native American rugs advertised locally to attract cottage buyers. There is even the story of how one cottage in Mount Gretna still retains is original Navajo rugs on the floor despite the house having been sold several times since the original owners.
As we come into the summer season, I would encourage you to take an evening and visit the cottage community nearest you. Chautauqua’s and camp meetings abound in the mid-Atlantic. They are a true
window into a slower and more relaxed world, a place where you can attend a lecture, go to a hymn sing or just sit quietly on your porch and listen to the crickets.
And if you go to Mount Gretna, be sure and walk around and see if you can still spot some of the beds turned into benches that Ida Tarbell was talking about.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.
Frick Publishes Final Volume In Series On History Of Art Collecting In America
New Book Examines Dynamic Landscape Of Collecting American Art
The Frick Collection has published “Tastemakers, Collectors, and Patrons: Collecting American Art in the Long Nineteenth Century,” the sixth and final book in its Studies in the History of Art Collecting in America series.
Edited by Linda S. Ferber, Margaret R. Laster, and Samantha Deutch (series editor), the volume explores the dynamic landscape of American art collecting in the United States from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries. The geographic range of collecting histories presented in this publication spans the country, from the Eastern Seaboard to the Old South, the Midwest, and the West Coast.
Contributing scholars investigate individual collectors and collectives whose missions to create regional and national collecting communities in the United States encouraged civic philanthropy in the fine arts. Key themes such as the creation of an “American” school distinct from, yet rooted in, European tradition, as well as the trials of forming publicly supported museums reverberate throughout the book.
Essays examine early patrons, collectors, and museum founders; the impact of sectionalism, the Civil War, and reform on American

The Rolling Stones At Altamont And A Young Elvis Steal The Show Original Poster Market Shows Tremendous Strength
Over three days and more than 500 lots of deep rockand-roll history, Heritage broke significant records and realized $2.1 million in its April 11, 12, and 13 Music Memorabilia & Concert Posters Signature Auction. The two days dedicated to rare and iconic posters snagged a full $1.8 million of that total, which, for the poster category broke all auction house records.
One of the most historically loaded lots in the category also broke all records for a Rolling Stones poster and can be summed up with one bracing word: Altamont. The elusive poster, created when the band played that fateful festival at Altamont Speedway in California, brought $93,750. It came from the collection of music memorabilia collector David Swartz, whose trove has been sold over the last two years. Altamont took place on Dec. 6, 1969, and some billed it as a “Woodstock West.” A
magazine as “a day when everything went perfectly wrong.”
A new auction record was realized for an Elvis Presley poster. An original cardboard window card advertising a 1955 Indianapolis concert, headlined by Hank Snow, was the first one produced after the young Elvis signed with the company RCA. It brought $187,500.
documentary was made the following year about the free event titled “Gimme Shelter.” To sum it up, it was a disaster. The concert was marred by violence; people died and many were injured. It was reported by “Rolling Stone”
“I’ll be honest, I was so excited I lost sleep both nights when our Altamont and then Elvis Indy went for multiples of what we had projected,” stated Pete Howard, Heritage’s director of Concert Posters. “These two dark horses, neither of which we’d ever auctioned before, came zooming from the rear of the pack and blew the doors off the place with spectacular finishes.”
The other “in the money” poster in the event was a delightful slice of Beatles
history with spectacular provenance. A Beatles 1966 Shea Stadium concert poster came from the office of the man whose name is printed at the top of it, the famed concert promoter Sid Bernstein, via his right-hand man, Fred Lyman, who treasured the poster for decades. It sold for $137,500. Coming in at a notable fourth place in the poster category was the Grateful Dead 1966 “Skeleton & Roses” Avalon Ballroom concert poster, also known as FD-26 and created by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, which sold for $81,250.
“Heritage is extremely pleased and humbled to have just concluded the richest concert poster auction in history, at $1.8 million spread over two days,” continued Howard. “It points to the continuing growth of this hobby and the appreciation for, and long-run success of, the
