The Ruth Bryson Sale Pook & Pook Sells Lancaster County Regional Collection By Karl Pass Ruth Bryson started dealing in Pennsylvania antiques in 1986. Her business was called Country Lane Antiques. She and her husband, Jack, lived in Quarryville, southern Lancaster County, Pa. For many years, Ruth had the lobby booth inside the entrance at the Original Semiannual Antiques Show and Sale in York, Pa. Bryson was fond of Lancaster County

Many things in this sale were purchased at those two auction houses, and many between the years 1997 and 2004. Ruth Bryson passed away in 2017. She is survived by her husband, three children, and seven grandchildren. On April 14, Pook & Pook Inc. in Downingtown, Pa., held the anticipated Ruth Bryson sale consisting of 321 lots. The total gross realized was $1,082,132. The hammer total was $882,650—$148,550 of which sold online (roughly 17 percent).

It’s not often, if ever, an auction has 10 Weber boxes. Actually, seven were boxes (three with feet, four without). One Weber item was a small wooden carved and painted bird on a pedestal

Spring is finally here after a cold March with snow storms. The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium will sponsor its Eighth Biannual Antique Show and Garden Market in the adjacent parking lot and courtyard on Sunday, June 3. Auctioneer Christopher Doerner and his wife, Elaine, have agreed to evaluate family treasures at this event. For a $5 donation, Chris and Elaine will

evaluate three items. The donations will go to the Burlington High School Performing Arts program. The Emporium courtyard will be filled with flowers, cement figures, garden art, furniture, and other items to enhance patios and gardens. The garden theme will continue for the Emporium display case, which will be filled with all types of pottery, such as Continued on page 6

($6,100); one item was a small hanging comb box, ($2,928); and one item was a paint-decorated slide-lid box, ($10,980). Prices reported include a 22-percent buyer’s premium. These small trinket boxes used to be attributed to a Jacob Weber, but thanks, in large part, to Clarke Hess, we now attribute these boxes to a Jonas Weber. A farmer by trade, Jonas Weber (1810-76) spent the bulk of his working years in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, making woodenware, ca. 1835-55. The boxes are often characterized by having a paint-decorated house on the front flanked by trees. The ones with feet were carved and put together with small wooden pins. Continued on page 2

shops, which I was very enthusiastic about when they started. Now, with the abundance of them everywhere, it is very hard to get a sense of what is owned by the shop, consigned to the shop or even dealer dump. The latter is a trade term to refer to second-level goods that antique dealers push back into the market to try and recoup their losses. Too much confusion and too much ambiguity around pricing means that buyers and sellers need to be aware.

In the last column, we talked about ways of selling your collection and ended up talking about auctions. As I noted, auctions are a great place to sell your collection, as the auctioneer is a partner with you in the sale of the material. That being said, all auction houses are not created alike. For example, I would be wary of selling fine china with an auctioneer that only sells real estate or cars. When looking for an auction house to sell items, I would encourage you to look at three components of their operations. 1.) Do they allow internet bidding? Many old timers decry internet sales, but they are the way of the world and this is where a majority of sales now happen. 2.) Do they allow a wide range of payment methods?

Federal Queen Anne 19th century chest. The piece was period to the 18th century, but none of the other terms came close to describing it. There are many wonderful regional auction houses, and I truly recommend that people spend the time and find one that would meet their needs. Also, remember that the auction world of today is vastly different than the collector’s world of the past. I recall one collector who wanted to sell his collection locally so the pieces would stay local. I never had the heart to tell him that in the post-modern era pieces sell out of the area constantly, and relatively little remains local any longer. Finally, there are other avenues for sale that I am far more skeptical about. One is the tag sale that is popular in the West and the South. To my mind, such sales allow for the best to be cherry-picked and the rest to be left behind with the ongoing issue of what to do with the detritus. Another is consignment

Credit card, checks and even PayPal are commonplace now. I am wary of old-time auctions that only allow local bank checks—not the best way to bring big-ticket buyers. We are in a post-cash-era economy. 3.) Is the photography any good? I am amazed when I see auctioneers who are snapping photographs with what looks like a bad 1970s Polaroid because iPhones and the like can take quality high-resolution photographs. An auctioneer who can’t take good pictures needs to think about a different job. I also encourage you to do some research on what the auctioneer writes about the items they are selling. Cataloging is a subjective art, and everyone can assuredly add or modify a description. My concern is when an auctioneer simply does not know what they are selling. A favorite example was a recent sale held in the South of a major estate where a piece of furniture was described as a

Rich Penn will hold his big spring auction at the Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa, on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6. Over 1,100 lots of toys, advertising, country store, barber shop, coin-operated machines, and furniture will be sold without reserve. “This auction has a number

of rare and one-of-a-kind pieces, including the largest Robot we’ve ever sold and a Caille mutoscope with female boxing beauty drop cards,” said Penn. “There is such a great variety of pieces here, gathered from superb collections on the West Coast, the East Coast and states in between, we should

have something for every collector and something in every price range. It should be a super fun auction,” continued Penn. With hundreds of toys, collectors of pressed steel, cast-iron, tin wind-ups, trains, Disney items, automatons and character toys should all find something of interest. Among the most unusual toys in the auction is a 10-foot-tall robot. This multi-action piece came from the amusement park, the World of Sid and Marty Krofft in Atlanta, Ga. Built in A Buddy L toy train engine, No. 963 (Hudson), cast-iron and steel, with some surface wear, is 26 inches in 1976, the theme park only lasted one season. The robot length. Continued on page 7

auction block. Items sure to incite competition amongst bidders include 1911 A1 pistols, Colt model 1909 and 1917 U.S. Army revolvers, M1 Garands, and M1 carbines. One special lot to watch is the rare and desirable Winchester Van Orden evaluator model 70 sniper rifle, .30-06 caliber, with a smooth pistol grip walnut stock with sling swivel studs. This rifle was one of the very few special orders shipped to Evaluators Ltd, the Quantico, Va., gun shop owned by Retired USMC Brig. Gen. George Van Orden, sometimes referred to as the father of Marine Corps snipers, known for his role in establishing the training program for USMC snipers. Additional WWI and WWII highlights will include German helmets and flags, gasmasks,

web belts, spy glasses, and even a WWII Japanese Army officers katana with leather wrapped scabbard and featuring a brass tsuba decorated with cherry blossoms. A large collection of over 50 shotguns will also generate interest in the sale, including a Winchester model 21 double barrel shotgun in 20 gauge and 12 gauge. More contemporary guns on offer will include a Colt Anaconda .44 magnum revolver. One of Pook & Pook Inc.’s firearms sales would not be complete without Pennsylvania rifles, and May’s sale is no exception. One fine example is a full stock percussion long rifle crafted by Abraham Gibbs of Lancaster, Pa., approximately .44 caliber, the barrel stamped C & S and with the scroll engraved lock featuring a small scene with a hunting dog. Another expected highlight with exceptional

just for hunting purposes typically show the scars of their life story as opposed to those made simply for decoration. Hunters who carved their own decoys exposed these pieces to the elements and had them sitting in water time and time again. Therefore, these utilitarian decoys may show some water damage, their paint would have overall wear and fading, and there may even be some chips, indentations or shot marks. However, there’s no set rule as to the type of wear or even the style of carving you would expect to see on a decoy of a particular age. The level and type of wear depends on many factors, including how often the decoy was used, where it was used, under what conditions it sat in the elements, how it was stored, etc. Many decoy collectors say that old carvings are like fingerprints, no two are exactly alike. Each carver may have their own particular style, but because each decoy is handmade, they will have differences, and there are certainly differences between carvers. Not all carvers over the past hundred-plus years marked their work with identifiers, but some did, either by carving or burning their marks into them. These marks can, of course, be copied by forgers, so you need to know exactly how carvers signed their pieces throughout their careers. In numerous cases, famous carvers’ marks have been added to old, unmarked decoys in an effort to add value to the pieces. One of the most commonly forged marks is that of famed decoy carvers

and twins Lee and Lem Dudley (1861-1942) because they marked their decoys with only the initials “L.D. However, in a 1994 article in “Decoy Magazine, Dick McIntyre writes, “Every example that I have seen with the initials ‘L.D.’ carved in the bottom was either a modern fake, or the initials had been added later to enhance the bird. McIntyre goes on to state that he believes the only decoys with the “L.D. mark were those made for the Dudleys’ personal use; these were sold to the Knotts Island club in 1913, and all had hump-back bodies with painted rather than glass eyes. The types of wood used by carvers is also important. Master carver A. Elmer Crowell made many of his decoys with

Once used only for utilitarian purposes by hunters to attract ducks, geese, and any other desirable waterfowl, decoys soon became, and continue to be, collectible pieces of Americana art as well as a significant part of hunting history. The earliest American decoys were made by Native Americans and crafted from woven reeds embellished with feathers and natural “paints. Over the course of generations, decoys evolved into more realistic carved wood lures, eventually becoming mass-produced molded plastic. Those old hand-rasped and lathe-turned wooden decoys are what many collectors of antique and vintage decoys have their sights set on, and they can carry a hefty premium. Among the highest prices paid at auction for an antique duck decoy was in 2003, when the then-called Guyette & Schmidt decoy auction firm sold a preening pintail drake decoy carved by A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) of Massachusetts for a whopping $802,000. That was a record until 2007, when Crowell’s preening pintail drake and his Canada goose sold for $1 million each. Obviously not all antique and vintage carved and painted decoys carry that high of a price tag; many can be had for under $1,000. It’s not unusual to see five- and six-figure examples sold at auction. This, of course, puts the fraudsters’ spotlight directly on them, which is why it’s important for buyers to know as much as possible about the decoys made by specific carvers they’re interested in purchasing. On the other hand, there are contemporary carvers who produce decoys that imitate antique and vintage pieces to such a high degree, it’s nearly impossible to recognize the difference. However, these artists are not trying to deceive buyers, and they usually mark their carvings to identify them as modern pieces. It’s when these marks are removed and sometimes replaced by the forged marks of a well-known carver that problems arise, so always look for evidence of sanding or other means of mark removal. Tiffany Floor Lamp And Diamond Ring Sell For A Combined $424,800 At Cottone Spring Fine Art And Antiques Auction Was Held March 23 And 24 Tiffany led the list of top lots at Cottone Auctions’ twoday Spring Fine Art and Antiques Auction held March 23 and 24, as a rare Tiffany Studios Bamboo leaded glass

and bronze floor lamp lit up the room for $241,900 and a fine, vintage Tiffany & Company 5.25-carat diamond ring slipped onto a new finger for $182,900, combining for a staggering $424,800. They were easily the top achievers in a 576-lot sale that posted an overall gross of $1.9 million. “We had some great items with excellent provenance,” said Matt Cottone. “Participation was strong A vintage Tiffany & Company (N.Y.) 5.25-carat diamond ring set in platinum, with the round brilliant diamond graded Color E, Clarity VS1, realized $182,900.

nationally and internationally. The market continues to be solid for the right merchandise. We try to h a v e carefully curated sales limited to 350 lots or less per day.” This rare Tiffany Studios Bamboo floor lamp, circa 1910, with original reddish-brown patina on base and shade and a 24-inch-diameter Tiffany-signed shade, sold for $241,900.

The Bamboo leaded glass and bronze floor lamp on a Bamboo senior base, made circa 1910, featured a shade signed “Tiffany Studios N e w York.” T h e Bamboo l a m p shade is one of a handful of models produced by Tiffany Studios that incorporated curved panels of glass, a laborintensive, time-consuming process in which individual pieces were cut. After being cut, the

pieces were then placed in a kiln and heated until they slumped to conform to the contours of the mold. The Bamboo series of lamps was first introduced shortly before the firm’s initial price list, published in 1906, then discontinued in 1913, likely due to the time and cost of their production. The lamp sold stood 67 inches high. The vintage Tiffany & Company 5.25-carat diamond ring, from an estate in Rochester, N.Y., was set in platinum and came with a flattering GIA report. The round brilliant diamond boasted color E and clarity VS1, and had good cut. Both Continued on page 14

James D. Julia’s Last Auction: A Memorable Event Engraved And Signed Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle Ties World Record Price, Selling For $598,000 In December of 2017, Morphy Auctions acquired the James D. Julia Auctioneers, and as per the terms of the purchase, Jim Julia agreed to conduct his last two auctions: the February Fine Art, Asian and Antiques Auction and his Extraordinary Firearms Auction, which was held on March 21, 22, and 23. The three-day firearms auction was the last one for the Fairfield, Maine,

facility, and certainly a memorable one, filled with emotions, excitement and tremendous success. Thereafter, all auctions will be conducted at Morphy’s Denver, Pa., and Las Vegas, Nev., facilities. As such, it could not have been a more fitting final sale for the Julia legacy and the beginning for the new Morphy/Julia organization.

of the final Maine sale. The evening of Tuesday, March 20, was set aside for a special celebration of life for the late J.R. LaRue, who was a great friend and hunting companion of Jim Julia and one of the firm’s lead consultants and catalogers for many years. LaRue had just finished a hunting trip in Georgia with members of the organization and while traveling to Kalispell, Mont., putting together a deal on a number of firearm consignments, became ill and passed in the Kalispell hospital. The celebration of life ceremony was held at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta, Maine. It was a heartfelt remembrance that included a video presentation, stories, and time sharing memories. Julia’s auctions have regularly included a virtual “Who’s Who” in the firearms world, and this sale was no

Over time, he began focusing on Winchesters, with the goal to amass the finest condition collection of Winchesters there is. His Winchester collection, gun for gun, is the most comprehensive collection of Winchesters in private hands. While the Winchester collection was perhaps the

most significant and memorable one, Bentley also put together as many as 15 or 20 other collections, including rare silver trophies, police badges, toy trains, military helmets, saddles, dye-cast models, and much more, all of which will be sold in Pennsylvania at various Morphy Auctions sales in the future. The Ray Bentley Winchesters were divided up into three sessions, the first being offered in this sale and the remaining two sessions for later this year at Morphy Auctions. Ray’s son, Larry, and daughter, Barbara, both attended the sale. More than 100 of Bentley’s high quality Winchesters and Henrys were sold in this auction, with many of them being the finest examples that Julia’s had ever offered. Miro was a sculptor, painter and cerami-

One was an oil-oncanvas painting by William Aiken Walker (Charleston, S.C., 1838-1921), titled “Cotton Picker” (1886), artist signed, measuring 18-by-10 inches. The other was a 26-by-36inch oil-on-canvas by Jack Lorimer Gray (Canadian, 19271981), titled “The Foghorn,” signed and in the original frame. An Italian Renaissancestyle walnut secretary, made in Florence around 1870 by Luigi Frullini (1839-97), covered with carved panels and borders of flowers, leaves and conventional figures, hit $54,280. Four doves in flight were depicted on the main panel of the 8 foot, 4 inch tall secretary, while a dove with outstretched wings surmounted a dial face above. A late 19th-century

Slave” sculpture. The selling price of $598,000 against an estimate of $175,000-$275,000 tied the world auction record for an 1866 model Winchester. Also offered from the Bentley collection were countless other high condition longarms, Colt and S&W handguns, Gatling guns, edged weapons, rare ammunition, and cartridge display boards. A fine Colt Model 1875 Gatling gun on an original carriage, one of just 44 long Model 1875 Gatlings purchased by the U.S. Army, was lot 2106. This Gatling is among the finest examples extant, and Bentley won numerous awards with it. It sold for $299,000 against an estimate of $125,000-$155,000. Lot 2116 was a superb and rare Colt Calvary Single Action Army revolver in pristine condition with grips dated 1876 and inspected by David A. Lyle and John T. Cleveland. It sold for $69,000 against a $40,000-

$50,000 estimate. Lot 2138 was a historic high-grade staff officer’s sword presented to Gen. George McClellan that had been owned by Ray Bentley for many years. This sword and its scabbard was estimated at $25,000-$50,000 and brought a final price of $63,250. Among the many lots of rare ammunition from the

A superb Colt Single Action Arm revolver, J.T.C. inspected for 1876, sold for $63,250. Bentley collection was lot 2089, the finest known 100count Henry “Black Box” cartridge pack. Almost 40 years ago, Ray Bentley bought Val Forgett’s entire Winchester cartridge collection just to get this box. There is no doubt

that this is the finest example of the earliest Henry rifle cartridge box, of which only a handful of examples are known. He displayed it often with his Henrys, and it was coveted by every cartridge collector who saw it, and so it is no wonder it established a world auction record price for a single box of ammo, selling for $46,000 against an estimate of $25,000-$35,000. Several cartridge display boards from the collection were also in high demand, including lot 2088, a United States Cartridge Company display board that blew away its $12,500-$15,000 estimate to sell for $41,400. In its entirety, over 300 lots were offered from the Ray Bentley collections, which contributed over $6 million to the auction’s total sales. This auction also featured many other high points out-

side of the Bentley collection. This included an offering of Class 3 items; in fact over 100 NFA items were offered. Julia’s has sold more machine guns over the last decade than all other North American auction houses combined. Collectors of Class 3 firearms saw eight auction records tied or broken in this sale. This popular collecting genre was highlighted by a Colt R-75A machine gun as lot 1065, which sold for a new record price of $80,500. Another Class 3/NFA record breaker was lot 1098, a scarce Knight’s Armament Company Stoner 63A machine gun that brought $69,000. World War II enthusiasts came out in force for this auction and drove an auction record price right from the start with the first lot on day one of the auction, lot Continued on page 18

cedar bodies and pine heads. Also, it’s important to know the types of birds each carver crafted; for example, the Dudley brothers weren’t known to make shore birds or hen decoys, only one ruddy hen decoy is known, so far. While weathered, damaged wood with sun-bleached paint is expected to be found on authentic antique and vintage working decoys, this authenticity check is by no means definitive. Fakers who are good at their trade use old, weathered wood (like fence posts, boat masts, etc.) and falsely age the paint they apply to their decoys. Some go so far as to create fake gunshot damage as well. However, unless they go to much greater lengths to create more exacting replicas, there are some details that will give the fake or reproduction away. Original old paint (pre1970s) on decoys was leadbased, old shot was lead, and nails were metal. If the decoys you’re interested in are five or six figures in value, it would be worth it to have them evaluated with some sort of radiography. This will show the presence of lead paint, remnants in the marks of lead shot, and most importantly, the internal nail construction as well as evidence of reconstruction

and repairs. Finally, be wary of marriages of old decoy bodies with newer or “wrong” heads, a relatively common practice. Because decoy heads had a lower survival rate than the bodies, hunters or fraudsters would replace one head with another or simply carve a new head. McIntyre points out that even museums have been fooled by this practice; radiography will also help detect this combination. All photos property of the author. At A Glance: Signs of a reproduction, fake or modern decoy: 1. Wrong type of wood 2. Resin 3. Stamped carver/manufacturer mark 4. Two or more identical decoys 5. Wrong type of bird for specific carver 6. Eyes of the wrong material Reference books, websites and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes.
