Mildred Keyser: A Study In Revivalist Arts By Karl Pass Mildred Davis Keyser (18921950) was a revivalist potter in Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, Pa. She produced Pennsylvania German-inspired redware from 1938 to 1949. Her daughter, June Adams, worked along with her mother beginning in 1942 and continued the operation until 1976, the year she moved to Florida. Both mother and daughter got their start through taking a WPA adult education course at Amber High School taught by William Gleaves. Keyser started with a workshop in the family’s barn and eventually had an addition put onto their house, which served as a shop and studio. The operation was called Brookcroft Pottery and located on the Butler Pike just east of Plymouth Meeting. Mildred Keyser, who also went by Mrs. C. Naaman Keyser, was involved with the start of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen in the late 1930s. Keyser produced 33 booklets on Pennsylvania German traditional

More than 120 exhibiting antique dealers and collectors will converge on Gettysburg, Pa., Saturday, May 20, for the 50th annual Gettysburg Spring and Fall Outdoor Antique Show. The fall edition will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23. Sprawling out from Gettysburg’s historic Lincoln Square, this event is billed as a “buyers and sellers” paradise, with a range of antiques and collectibles. Items from primitive cupboards, sideboards, benches, farm tables, and wooden boxes to lamps, coins, pattern glass, art glass, Depression-era glass, and ironstone will be shown for sale. Shoppers can also find clocks, jewelry, photos, pocket knives, bottles, old toys, crocks, old linens, dolls, pocket watches, holiday collectibles, postcards, and country farm items. Brand-name pieces of Heisey, Cambridge, Fostoria, R.S. Prussia, Limoges, Haviland, Rockwood, Roseville, and carnival glass will also be featured. “This is a great semiannual tradition in Gettysburg,” said John Angstadt, the event’s organizer, “Dealers, collectors and casual

The show is held rain or shine beginning at 7 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. The proceeds from this show support community activities of the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association. Jersey Cartoonist’s New Book Popular With Collectors John Stinger, a serious collector and a nationally syndicated cartoonist from Stewartsville, N.J., is having a fun time with his 260-page book gently spoofing collectors and treasure hunters. The book, “The Lighter Side of Collecting!” published by Tanner Publishing, is off to a fast start, selling to collectors, dealers, auctioneers, shop owners, appraisers and memorabilia seekers worldwide who wheel-and-deal in vintage nostalgia.

His cartoons appear weekly and monthly in national magazines and newspapers. Stinger’s very funny but nonoffensive cartoons - all 200 of them – are featured full page and illustratively drawn in what he calls “the New Yorker style.” From the positive press and response he’s receiving, the book is resonating with younger collectors as well as seasoned old-timers who deal with rapidly changing pop culture. But, it’s still all about the fun of chasing and finding rarities at yard sales, flea markets, antiques malls, estate

instructional manuals and are full of illustrated design motifs. “The time was ripe in 1914 for a revival of Pennsylvania Dutch arts, but because of the strong feeling at the time against anything German in origin, Pennsylvania Dutch craftsmanship slipped into oblivion before its present momentum became evidenced,” wrote Mildred Keyser in her article, “Pennsylvania Dutch Pottery” in “The Pennsylvania Dutchman” Vol. 2, #1, pg. 7, speaking about the society-at-large-sentiment in

America during the onset of World War I. There were two large pine trees in the front yard of the Keyser property, which served as the inspirational source for her inscribed signature. Mildred signed work with a pine tree symbol next to the letter “K” and sometimes dated her work. June Adams signed her work with a pine tree symbol next to a lowercase letter “A” and sometimes “JK” or “JKA.” The mother and daughter used hand-dug clay procured along North Lane near

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Auction Memories

Peter Swift Seibert It was a lovely winter’s night this past January, and I got to thinking about the many evenings when my mother and I would race home from work, hit Roy Rogers for a hamburger, and head to the weekly auctions. As regular auctiongoers know, there are the on-site sales on Saturdays and the weekly sales in an auction house or fire company. Both have equal opportunities. Mom and I would head towards Juniata, Mifflin, or Union counties for the weekly sales in small country towns. Those were the sales where the published notices of what was to be sold always left you

wondering. You might see anything from modern household to period furniture, and it could be all mixed together. The auctioneers were wonderful, and sometimes you found a bargain, and sometimes you would have to pay high retail. I was young and not so bright, so I made more mistakes than not. But it was a great learning experience for sure. There was the great story of waiting all evening for a pair of Empire girandoles. They never came up. It only dawned upon me around 10 p.m. that the runners were afraid to move the piece because of breaking a prism. I finally steeled myself to ask for the piece, and four runners carefully started to move it. The trembling got worse and worse and finally the auctioneer stopped the sale and told them to put the piece back on the shelf. I bought it for $200 only because I think everyone

Twin County Doll Collectors UFDC Presents

Parade of Dolls and Bears Show/Sale

was scared to move it. Another sale was where I purchased a Victorian desk. It was in two sections, and I was driving a two-door sedan. I recall buying a big load of unfinished rag rugs and ripping them apart so I could use the strips to tie the desk to the back of my car and then pad it so it would not wreck the finish or fall off.

Those were the days of silly prices for mundane things. I remember watching a set of sleigh bells sell at a country sale in upper Dauphin County for $1,500. I understand rarity, but this was a crazy price. Then there was the man who bid on the treen bowl without seeing it. After purchasing it, he noticed it was wormy and tossed it back

at the auctioneer where it exploded into a million pieces on the floor. Then there was the night that Mother was on one side of the room, and I was on the other. We ended up bidding against each other because we thought the other was not participating. The auctioneer found it as funny as we found it embarrassing.

Those country sales were wonderful, and I truly recommend to anyone who has never gone to find one and go. On a cold night when there is a big stove heating the auction and everyone is nursing a white Styrofoam cup of coffee, it is about as authentically Pennsylvania and antique as anywhere you can imagine.

Antiques Show And Sale Set To Be Held At The Emporium

antique show and garden market will be held at the Emporium. This year, the Emporium is adding the Sunflower Fields Farmers Market and Village Bakery to the spring event. Also, auctioneer Christopher Doerner and his wife, Elaine, of 21st Century Antiques will evaluate antiques. An evaluation donation of $5 per three items will be donated to Team Franky (Childhood Cancer Fund). The Emporium greeter at the front door will give evaluation numbers starting at 12:30 p.m. and ending at 3 p.m. To contact Doerner, call 609-877-6843. Emporium dealer Pat Patricio will join Chris and Elaine giving evaluations on watercolors, oil paintings, and prints. An old proverb, “March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers, was first recorded in 1886. The shorter version, “April showers bring May flowers, is also a common expression in English speaking countries. The Emporium display case for the month of May will be filled with vases and other items decorated with flowers.

Also on May 7, the Emporium will offer opportunities to win a spring floral gift basket filled with great items along with an Emporium $25 gift certificate. Tickets will $1 each. The winning ticket will be pulled at 5 p.m. The Emporium is located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J., and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Find the Emporium on Facebook or call 609-747-8333 for additional information.

Why? Mostly because the younger generation simply doesn’t like it the way that their parents and grandparents did. Many don’t even have a dining room in their house, condo, or apartment today. The team at Hake’s Americana had plenty to celebrate as the first auction of the company’s goldenanniversary year concluded. The two-day event, held March 14 and 16 with a gap day in between, swept past expectations and ended on a high note, reaching $1,061,373. All prices reported include an 18 percent buyer’s premium. As predicted, the star of the show was Norman Mingo’s (American, 1896-1980) original

Back-To-Back Catalog Sales At Conestoga By Karl Pass Conestoga Auction Company, of the Hess Auction Group in Manheim, Pa., held back-to-back Saturday catalog sales on March 18 and 25. The first sale had 469 lots. A separate 200-lot sale of coins and currency was held in the back salesroom. The coins and currency were the collection of Oliver and Judi Overlander of Marietta, Pa. Of the 469 lots

in the main catalog sale, 280 lots were from either Overlander or his late business partner, Harry Hartman. Hess had already held three dedicated sales for Hartman’s estate. The March 25 catalog sale was 550 lots from various consignors. It was an exciting twoweek stretch for the company, which also has an active division that sells residential and commercial real estate, including farms. Phil Nissley did most of the selling for both catalog sales, due to John Hess needing to be out selling farms. “I know Oliver was happy,” said John Hess after the first sale. Both Overlander and Hartman have done business

with Conestoga, since Larry Bomberger owned the company. From the Overlander collection, a rare Peter Derr kettle lamp, stamped “P.D. 1850,” in very good condition, sold for $3,540. It went to a collector from the area Derr worked. Peter Derr (1793-1868) was a gifted metalsmith from New Schaefferstown, Berks County,

Pa. The still rural Pennsylvania German enclave, near Bernville, is in Jefferson Township. During Derr’s time, it was Tulpehocken Township. A comparable Derr kettle lamp sold for $11,850 in 2011 at the Breininger sale held by Pook & Pook. Another example sold for $9,360 in 2007 at the Shelley sale, also held by Pook & Pook. A copper base Derr Betty lamp dated with the same year sold to the trade for $1,180. A Derr dough scraper dated “1856” brought $767. Among the few items with a reserve, a fine, large-size Compass Box Artist box failed to find a buyer. It was written for blue ground mocha mug brought Catharina Gerhart and dated “1815.” The bookplate sold for $885. $2,990 on Oct. 8, 2004, at the Dr. and Mrs. Donald Shelley “fraktur and related works on

Greater York Antiques Show To Return To The York Fairgrounds For 48th Year The Greater York Antiques Show and Sale is one of the top shows of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic, featuring 60 dealers from across the United States. This year’s event will run on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, at Memorial Hall East in the York Expo Center in York, Pa. The show will feature fresh merchandise and will include, for the first time at show, cut glass from the collection of Dr. John Williams. Attendees may browse inspiring room settings of 18th- through 20th-century furniture, folk art, lighting, silver, ceramics, glass, fine

antique jewelry, clocks, paintings, and other fine decorative accessories for the house and garden. “It’s something special. You can’t find this material presented in this kind of atmosphere anywhere else,” said Bob Bockius, show manager of the Greater York Antiques Show. The show also promises many unique items, including a collection of 30 carved walking sticks and pointers by William Abbott Willard (1851-1931), which can be found in the booth of Arborfield Americana. William Abbott Willard spent nearly his whole life in

Hartford, Conn., where he lived in a house with Mark Twain as his neighbor on one side and Harriet Beecher Stowe on the other. He gained a wide reputation for his hobby of carving canes as gifts for friends and relatives to commemorate both personal and historic events of the day. He often carved cane handles in the forms of distinguished gentlemen’s heads, and he usually added an inscription explaining the occasion the cane commemorated. Most of his canes were carved from twigs he gathered on the grounds of Mark Twain’s property, and he presented many to Twain

and Stowe. New to this year’s show will be J.K. Nevin Antiques from Doylestown, Pa.; Fleshman’s Antiques from New Market, Md.; Barbara Rew of Lewes, Del.; and Gary Manlove of Greenwood, Del., who is bringing a Henry Mauger rifle to the show. Mauger (1750-1826) worked in Douglas Township along the Bucks County, Pa., line. He made rifles and pistols and some locks. It is believed that John Derr apprenticed under Mauger, as Derr used a similar patchbox design on many of his long rifles. This same design was also used by Joseph Faust.

A special feature on Saturday afternoon will be a manager’s reception, providing an opportunity to talk with the dealers and learn the significance and history of the items they are offering for sale while enjoying a glass of wine or champagne. The show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Coffee and pastry from the Copper Crust, a quality local bakery, will be served as part of a relaxing Sunday morning perfect for shopping and enjoying the show. The change in Sunday hours is to accommodate collectors and dealers who

Early Pattern Molded Glass Attributed To Stiegel’s Glass Works Excel At Norman Heckler’s Auction A pattern molded covered sugar bowl and an early pattern molded pocket bottle, both likely manufactured by Stiegel’s American Flint Glass Manufactory in Manheim, Pa., sometime between 1763 and 1774, combined to sell for

nearly $20,000 in an onlineonly auction (Premier Auction #146) held March 6 to 15 by Norman C. Heckler & Company. The brilliant cobalt blue sugar bowl featured a 16-diamond pattern and a cylindrical bowl flared to the rim, with matching cover having an applied swirled rib finial. The glass quality and clarity were superb, with a strong mold impression. The light-tomedium lavender pocket bottle was a masterpiece of early American glassware, with its plump form and ogival pattern above flutes. The sugar bowl was the auction’s top lot, selling for $10,530. “Which is significant,

An early pattern molded pocket bottle, likely made by Stiegel’s American Flint Glass Manufactory in Manheim, Pa., circa 1763-74, sold for $9,360.

since sugar bowls and other tableware got regular use and weren’t put up on a shelf, like a bottle or a flask,” said company owner Norman Heckler. “That they survive intact for so many years is remarkable in itself, but to be presented in like-new condition, like this sugar bowl was, is simply amazing.” “Maybe it’s finally time tableware will get the respect it deserves, and not take a back seat to bottles and flasks. We had many fine examples in the auction, including salt bowls, utility jars and creamers. Most did very well. We also saw high prices paid for the better examples of blown glass, the ones that were very important. Overall, the sale went quite well,” reported Heckler. The auction was an eclectic mix of merchandise, one

that included early glass, bottles, flasks, paperweights, bitters, soda and mineral water bottles, freeblown and pressed glass, whiskeys, medicines, pattern molded glass, utilities and inkwells. Headlining the auction was the collection of Ed and Sherry Losacano. The early pattern molded pocket bottle sold for $9,360, but it wasn’t the only such flask in the auction. Another one, maker unknown but probably manufactured in the Midwest between 1820 and ’30, bluish aquamarine in color, sold for a reasonable $1,755. The five-inch-tall flask, ribbed and swirled to the right, with 16 ribs, boasted truly brilliant glass. All prices quoted include a 17 percent buyer’s premium.

The fancy ink bottle made in America between 1840 and ’60, conical in form with a drape pattern and label panel, medium cobalt blue, 2.5 inches tall, sold for $4,972.

This “For Pike’s Peak” historical flask with an image of a man shooting a deer, attributed to the Ravenna (Ohio) Glass Works, circa 1860-70, sold for $8,190.

condition, with no others known in a higher condition, it smoked past its high estimate to settle at $10,923. Neck and neck with the topselling comic, an example of All Star Comics #7, from October/November 1942, features Green Lantern backed by The Justice Society of America on its cover. The CGC 9.2 NMbook soared beyond its estimate to reach $10,620. Superheroes made a big impression, both as a group and individually. A vibrantly colorful store box containing 120 onecent packs of Fleer Justice League of America Tattoo gum left its mark at $6,140, while a factory-sealed Hasbro Wonder Woman game, copyright 1967, commanded $2,153. Superman grabbed his share of the spotlight, too. A rare 1963 syndication promotional kit for the Adventures of Superman TV show, containing nine 8-by-10 glossy publicity shots and plot synopses for various episodes, earned $4,283 against a $400$700 estimate. A factory-sealed Aurora Superman boxed model kit, copyright 1963, was claimed for $1,752. “Superhero items were very strong in this sale,” Winter observed. “As comic books conThe All Star Comics #7, tinue to climb in value, it October/November 1942, CGC 9.2 appears that collectors are paying more attention to related NM- realized $10,620. material. If anything, it’s the wave of the future. We’re excited about it because we know the category front to back from having handled it for so many years.” Other notable auction lots included a boxed circa-1932 16-piece Rosenthal Mickey Mouse porcelain tea set, $4,187, and a boxed 1952 Gilbert Nuclear Physics No. U238 Atomic Energy Lab. Designed to inspire budding Einsteins, the lab set was offered complete with all original contents and packing materials. It blew up its $2,000-$5,000 auction estimate, selling for $8,697. were a big hit. “Posters promoting rock, blues, pop and jazz concerts continue to climb in value as more and more collectors gravitate toward these scarce printed works of art. They’re very hard to find because they were not originally intended to last for more than a few days or weeks,” said Winter. Topping the auction’s music “charts” were the only known example of a 1958 Rock ’N’ Roll Jamboree poster with an electrifying image of Jerry Lee Lewis standing at and playing a piano, $7,204, and a 1961 poster promoting a show in Buffalo, N.Y., that paired Ahmad Jamal and Aretha Franklin, who, at the time, was only 19 years old. An important artifact from Franklin’s early days as a performer, the poster sold for $6,490. Political memorabilia, the category on which the Hake’s brand was founded, put in another strong performance. Many highlights emerged from among the 500 political lots offered, like the 1916 Hughes/ Fairbanks portraitstyle jugate described as only the second one known to Hake’s, which rose to $6,198. It was followed, pricewise, by an 1868 Grant and Colfax 36-star campaign parade flag, $5,711, and a sleeper – a simple, nonpictorial 1952 Eisenhower/ Nixon coattail button from Mayor Louis Bay Day in Asbury Park, N.J. – which more than quadrupled its high estimate at $3,028. Comic books – especially the 600-plus issues that were CGC and CBCS certified – were hot commodities, knocking down one impressive price after another. One of the auction’s big winners was TopNotch Comics #2, from January 1940. It featured a wartime theme on its lavishly illustrated, brightly hued cover with an image of a Nazi bomber plane going down in flames. The only known copy in 9.6 NM-plus

Herkimer, N.Y., is one of the premier pieces. In original condition, it would make a great statement piece in any country store collection. “The Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center is just 100 yards from our office. We were finally able to get the dates we needed. It’s a great facility and is connected to a hotel. Both are connected by an enclosed skywalk. Plus, it’s within walking distance to some great restaurants. The hotel gave our guests a special $79 room rate, and I think we’ll have some other fun things lined up too. We’re really looking forward to it,” added Penn. The site is located in downtown

Heckler’s Auction Waterloo, just one block off the freeway.
