The Frick Collection Continues To Acquire Important Decorative Arts Objects For the 13th year in a row, east coast collectors of political buttons, badges, ribbons and related ephemera will meet in Titusville, N.J., on Saturday, May 14, to sell, trade and display memorabilia from the 2016 campaigns, as well as from elections throughout history. This show is scheduled from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. at the Titusville United Methodist Church. Attendees may expect to see a wide variety of political items, ranging from present day candidates, to items from such popular former presidents as Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan. The gathering will be hosted by the local chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) a national nonprofit hobbyist association, dedicated to preserving political history. “Our meeting will offer a great

opportunity for young and old alike to collect buttons and other items from this year’s exciting presidential campaigns,” said Tony Lee, a Titusville resident and president of APIC’s Big Apple Chapter. “Most political items don’t survive the elections in which they were used, so to see an ‘I Like Ike’ apron or a Ronald Reagan cowboy hat or a clothing button worn at George Washington’s inauguration and inscribed with ‘Long Live the President’ is a great experience for students of political history at any age.” The historic Titusville United Methodist Church is located at 7 Church Road - at the corner of River Road (Route 29) and Church Road in Titusville, just seven miles due south of the Lambertville, N.J., flea market. The button show will be held in the church’s separate

The Frick Collection Continues To Acquire Important Decorative Arts Objects

A pair of candelabra, early 18th-century porcelain, gilt-bronze mounts by Pierre Gouthière after a design by François-Joseph Bélanger, France, 1782, hard-paste porcelain, marble, and gilt bronze, The Frick Collection, were a gift of Sidney R. They will certainly find a remarkably appropriate setting for display and study here at the Frick.” The Frick Collection is located at 1 East 70th Street in Manhattan, N.Y. This Hubley cast-iron Packard Straight 8 Sedan brought $15,340.

Cast-iron automotive was robust from start to finish. Lot 70, a sample Dent Bulldog Mack Supply Truck, ex. Kaufman and Bob Brady collections, rolled out the door for $8,850; while the very next lot, a Packard Straight Eight, commanded $15,340. “The Straight Eight is one of only two or three known and came from the collection of Bob Brady, who has always been very particular about condition,” said Bertoia. Lot 162, a Dent Parcel Express Van, previously belonged to the late William “Bill” Gottschalk, a titan among toy collectors of a generation ago. It subsequently joined the Jay Schoedinger collection, the source of many superior toys entered in this sale. A Dent factory sample with identification tag, the skyblue van with red-painted nickel wheels raced past its $4,000-$6,000 estimate to settle at $9,440. Cast-iron aviation toys from the Brady collection were airborne as soon as they were announced at the auctioneer’s podium. Lot 81, a Hubley DO-X Seaplane sold for $11,210 against an estimate of $6,000$8,000; while Lot 174, a 1929 Vindex sample Lockheed airplane, ex. Kaufman collection, hit the top of its estimate range at $12,980. A specialty subcategory A Hubley cast-iron Giraffe Van sold for $16,520.

The Frick Collection is renowned for its remarkable holdings of 18th-century French fine and decorative arts and for galleries such as the Fragonard and Boucher rooms. In recent years, acquisitions in this area have included sculptures by JeanAntoine Houdon (active 17411828), Claude Michel Clodion (1738-1814), and Josef Chinard (1756-1813), as well as a rare vase from the Sèvres royal manufactory. Trustee Sidney R. Knafel has given the New York museum an extraordinary pair of candelabra by Pierre Gouthière, the great French chaser-gilder who worked in the second half of the 18th century for an elite clientele, including Madame Du Barry, the Duke of Aumont and the Duchess of Mazarin (the latter having commissioned from Gouthière, the Frick’s iconic blue marble table with giltbronze mounts). The newly acquired candelabra will be presented in the Frick’s groundbreaking monographic exhibition “Pierre Gouthiere: Virtuoso Gilder at the French Court” planned to open this fall. “At this time last year, with the help of Sidney R. Knafel, the Frick acquired a very important 16th-century SaintPorchaire ewer by the famed French ceramicist Bernard Palissy. A fascinating object, it inspired closer study and fresh scholarship of a vase from the same region purchased 100 years earlier by founder Henry Clay Frick. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Knafel once

A coveted factory display from the Jay Schoedinger collection, it benefited from its crossover appeal to both pressed steel and train enthusiasts, and chugged off to a new owner for $7,670. condition - realized that a unique opportunity to bid on elusive forms with beautiful original paint had arrived. “I was very surprised and pleased that even simple flower basket doorstops sold for much more than similar ones offered in other auctions. I think some collectors felt that if a particular doorstop was one of my favorites, it must be special. That was a real compliment to me,” said Jeanne. In fact, t h e top

A book example and one of only four known in all-original condition, it was entered as Lot 326 and sold for $29,500, just shy of its $30,000 high estimate. Phones buzzed with activity when bidding opened on Lot 424, a 16.25-inch Whistling Jim doorstop with a stunning natural patina. Against an estimate of $5,000-$7,000, the depiction of a boy with similarities to Huckleberry Finn quickly rose to a winning bid of $22,420. Also, Lot 315, the nicest of all known examples of an Uncle Sam doorstop, showed off all its Stars-andStripes glory to attract an estimate-topping bid of $21,240. Another excellent result was achieved by Lot 409, a doorstop depicting a football player in rushing stance, with a bold “V” emblazoned on his jersey. It crossed into the end zone at $11,210 against an estimate of $5,000-$7,500. “What this auction showed is that there is still a lot of strength in the toy hobby, especially when pieces in great condition come out of seasoned collections and into the marketplace,” said Rich Bertoia. “There was definitely some electricity in the room, and a lot of that had to do with the famous collectors of the past and present whose names were associated with the toys.” Bertoia’s next auction will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, and features antique toys, doorstops and Christmas antiques. First Annual Auction

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Fakes, Fakes, Fakes, Part III

This is the third and final column in a series that looks at the evolution of fakes in the marketplace. Last time, I was focusing on the ongoing history of how fake items have come to dominate certain parts of the marketplace particularly as it relates to military items. Much of the fake military on the market right now is the product of small shop production from offshore. Unscrupulous dealers could commission quantities of patches and other previously unfaked items to resell to collectors. This resulted in what had been a very safe area to collect now being opened to the wide world of fakery. An

pieces were of such high quality that lots of collectors were buying them and only after they realized that the nametape was to the same person but for disparate military units did folks realize they were re-enactor pieces. So where does this leave not only military collectors but anyone who wants to purchase genuine items? Such an abundance of bad items is enough to scare any collector away. It used to be that the secret was to only buy out of households rather than from dealers. Sure ‌ makes sense ‌ only go to estate sales and then you know you are getting close to the source. Problem is, as I mentioned, there have been fakes on the marketplace for decades so being in a house is no proof that it is real. Second is that with an estate, the original owner is not there to question whether the piece was something from their family or they purchased it in the last year of their life. This is particularly true as people lose things or have them stolen or

destroyed. They purchase new, reproduction or original pieces to replace their lost treasures. Without the story, they are circulated back to collectors at an estate sale with no clue if they are old or not. This is where purchasing from a reputable dealer or auction house is crucial. These folks will give you the written guarantee and stand behind that warrantee. For my two cents, that is where I would go to make a major purchase. For the casual collector, in my mind, it is a case of using common sense in your purchasing. If a flea market dealer, setting up on a Sunday for $10 a table, is offering thousand dollar items for sale often at seemingly rock bottom prices ‌ I think I would step back and pause for just a moment. If you can get top dollar, why would you settle for something less. Again, use your common sense and while you may not totally miss fake items, you will have lessened the odds of getting really hit hard.

with the American Quilt Study Guild. So when Marcy Molinaro agreed to serve as head cataloguer for the textile segment of the auction, we thought the time was right to launch the new endeavor. Response so far has been very strong and we anticipate a great event, added Evans. The Mount Crawford, Va., firm set a record price for Southern needlework in 2009 when they sold an 1834 Harrisonburg, Va., sampler for $48,875. It had descended directly in the family of the maker and is now in a Virginia private collection. even more unscrupulous path was followed by dealers, particularly those of America’s modern wars, who commissioned small Asian shops to invent patches for units. These totally made-up fakes played upon every collector’s desire for uniqueness. Imagine getting the fabled “xxxx patch used only by “yyyy unit. Trouble was, the whole story was made up. Finally, and the last layer to the fakery story, are the reenactors. The re-enactors that I have known are wonderful folks who would never deliberately fake an item. They pride themselves on securing or making exacting reproductions of items that they wear on weekends as re-enactors. The challenge comes when those exacting reproductions, often with lots of nice wear on them from weekends in the field, are obtained by unscrupulous folks and resold as originals. Again, in reading a forum online, I learned of a wealthy Asian re-enactor who had quality pieces made for his wear as part of his modern re-enacting persona. The

When I was a full-time auctioneer, I always felt that one of my most important jobs was to manage my sellers’ expectations. In other words, help them get as clear a picture as possible of their likely sale results. The reason I did this was quite simple: in most cases, when I’d help a lifelong collector sell his or her collection, the last interaction that person had with their collection was a settlement check. And to some extent, it really didn’t matter how great the service I gave them was, or how fantastic the catalog looked, or how big the sale day crowd was; if that check was smaller than expected, that seller was likely to be unhappy. Truth be told, this is, in my mind, the great frustration of the auctioneer. The single biggest factor in a seller’s satisfaction with their auction experience is the one thing no auctioneer can really control the prices. These days, this can be a real challenge. It’s a new world, and a new market. While the top of the market continues to amaze with crazy prices, the vast majority of the market does not. Many segments, such as formal American furniture, brass, and fireplace items (I could go on, but I won’t) simply aren’t bringing what they used to bring. If you spent the 1980s and ’90s building a collection by shopping shows (i.e., retail), the selling today at auction (i.e., wholesale) will sometimes result, after commission, in 30 to 50 cents on the dollar. I can hear your sighs and groans from here. Sound bleak? Perhaps you are considering saving yourself the perceived pain and not selling. Maybe you’ll let your kids deal with your stuff after you are dead so that you won’t be around to witness the inevitable bloodbath. Well, I’m here to tell you that it does NOT have to be that way! Let

me ask you one question that might help you begin to get some perspective: did you collect antiques for profit? I’m going to guess that the answer for the vast majority of you is a resounding “no.” Of course you didn’t. You did not spend 30, 40, or even 50 years traveling all over the place to auctions and shows seeking out treasures so you could flip it at age 65. You didn’t spend countless hours reading and learning about early lighting, jacquard coverlets, painted surfaces, and weathervanes so that you could enjoy a fat profit margin. And you did not get to know countless dealers, auctioneers, and fellow collectors, many of whom you now consider friends, so that your collection could pave the way to a house in the South Seas. You spent much of your spare time and money on antiques because you love old stuff, you love history, and you love

movement, bold color, and compositional integrity, this dynamic masterwork has been held in private hands for the last century and will be offered alongside legendary works across California, Western and Illustration Art. “This auction defines the term ‘fresh to market’, said Aviva Lehmann, Director of American Art. “The selection we’ve assembled includes fresh works never before seen at auction - many of which embody the height of these artists’ talents. For institutions and advanced collectors, this is a must-watch sale. In the arena of Illustration Art, the original promotional art for the 1960 film “Cinderfella (est. $300,000$500,000) is making its auction debut. Conceptualized by the film’s star and producer, the artwork embodies the artistic collaboration of two American legends: illustrator

Norman Rockwell and comedian Jerry Lewis. It has remained in Lewis’ collection since Rockwell presented it to him in 1960. As the producer, Lewis oversaw every artistic and marketing detail of Cinderfella. “My whole idea was to get an icon in the world of art and have that icon sell the movie, Lewis says in an interview filmed for Heritage Auctions. Another important Rockwell painting in the auction is his classic “Portrait of a Young Boy, circa 1955 (est. $100,000-$150,000). Possibly intended for a Crest toothpaste advertisement, few subjects capture the artist’s midcentury appeal than his illustration portraits of children and adolescents. “’Portrait of a Young Boy’ personifies postWorld War II mainstream

Highlighting the Taos Artists is Ernest Blumenschein’s “Aspen in the Squareâ€? Pier 94 to create both conversation and commerce between the world’s leading exhibitors, collectors, museum curators, art advisors and interior designers. “We are happy to continue our momentum in the New York market,” said Barbara Goodwin, New York Art, Antique and Jewelry Show director. “This Show is of vital importance to our exhibitors as well as our organization as we continue Manhattan’s rich legacy of providing an elegant showcase for a wide range of collector’s interests. As the city’s residential landscape evolves, Pier 94 helps us to do the same with an expanded show and new audience possibilities.” The New York Art, Antique and Jewelry Show is slated to be a special event, unique to that of any other presented at Pier 94 due explicitly to the superior selection of high end dealers that will showcase their fine art, antiques and jewelry at the location. Not only is the show being presented at an optimal time of year, but it will also be highlighted by a huge marketing, advertising and public relations campaign which will draw more collectors and buyers than ever before to the venue. event in Manhattan,” said Scott Diament, President/CEO of the Palm Beach Show Group. “Building prosperous events, at optimal times in ideal venues for dealers to succeed are the factors that build the foundation of the Palm Beach Show Group. We know, without a doubt, that this show embodies these factors and Pier 94 is the ultimate location for this event.” With both an intimate and iconic setting, Pier 94 is situated against the scenic backdrop of the Hudson River. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, on the Westside Highway, the ease of access to Pier 94 is an added benefit to the show’s new venue choice. Luxury shuttles will run to and from Pier 94 to the Upper East Side and other pre-determined locations, providing ideal transportation options to guests to attend the show. Perhaps the busiest commercial hub in the U.S., Midtown Manhattan offers an exhibition option for highend exhibitors to reach affluent and knowledgeable collectors. Intended to attract a global audience, the venue offers wide open spaces, high ceilings, column free corridors, which allows for a refined, focused, and exquisitely displayed show experience. Swann Galleries held a printed and manuscript African Americana sale on March 31. The total gross was $815,145, including buyer’s premium. “I have to say that I am really very gratified with the results of my 20th sale. It has more than lived up to my expectations. When I thought about the planning of this as an ‘anniversary’ sale, it was my intent to try and make it a special one,” said Wyatt Houston Day, Swann Galleries’ Printed and Manuscript African Americana specialist. “I was very fortunate to have both the weight of 20 years of auctions and exposure behind this one, as well as just plain good luck in locating and acquiring some truly exceptional material in the course of the year,” Day said. “I thank all of the staff at Swann for helping to make it a success, and I can only hope that we will be able to make the next sale as good or even better. My 76th birthday is tomorrow and I couldn’t have had a better present.” A star among the lots sold was a pen and brush work engraved and copyrighted in 1932 by E. Simms Campbell titled “A Night-Club Map of Harlem.” It sold to an institution for $100,000. Lot 54 was a signed autographed letter by Frederick Douglass to a son of Alphonso Janes of Providence, R.I. dated “6 July 1889.” It sold to a collector for $45,000. The

The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company: A Brief History

The Grist Mill Antiques Center Celebrates Mother’s Day

By Dudley Browne

Each year, a special day is set aside to celebrate the most significant person in everyone’s lives - mom! She is the comforter, caregiver, and creator of the beauty that makes a house a home. Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., believes that mothers deserve more than one day of celebration, so for the month of May they will be honoring mothers far and wide in its special display. Shoppers are invited to come in and see lovely items such as perfume bottles, ornamented hair combs, dazzling jewelry, delicate tea sets, handbags, decorative vanity mirrors, brush and comb sets, trinket boxes, photos, frames, prints, and postcards. These are are all part of the collections the dealers have curated to make Mother’s Day shopping as easy as pie. Besides mom, there are so many wonderful ladies to celebrate: don’t forget that grandmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, and friends also play vital

The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was established in 1880 in the town of New Bedford, Mass. An interesting fact is the initial product the company manufactured was metal hardware for caskets. The Pairpoint facility was located near the Mount Washington Glassworks factory which was well known for the production of innovative and high quality glassware. Through the years the two companies discussed the possibility of joint projects that might benefit them both. Finally, in 1894, the companies merged and began the production of lamps as well as lamp parts and accessories. Their innovative lamp designs became very popular and were in great demand. Their blown glass lamp shades were created in three basic designs: plain glass exteriors, ribbed

with an acid bath. From this point each shade went to the artist for the reverse painted decoration. While most of the Puffy shades were done in a floral design, the rarest and arguably most valuable Puffy shade depicts a crouching owl. This shade was done in two versions, a brown owl and a white owl. Up until 2006, there were only five examples of the Puffy Owl lamp known to exist. That is when the Lamp and Glass Department at James D. Julia Auctioneers discovered another example in the midwest and brought it to auction in the fall of that year. It sold for $86,250. Since that time Julia’s Lamp & Glass Dept. has discovered two more of the elusive owl lamps bringing the total known to eight. The Pairpoint Puffy lamps are without a doubt some of the most unique and innovative decorative products of their time.

exteriors and mold blown, known as “Puffy,” which created a three-dimensional shade. All of these shades were decorated with reverse painted designs on the interior. The reverse painting turned out to be a challenge for the artists, not only did they have to “reverse” how they painted the shades, painting the foreground first and the background last rather than the background first and the foreground last, as they would on a canvas. They also had to determine how the light of the lamp would affect the look of the design showing through the thick glass shade. Of the three different models, the Pairpoint Puffy is by far the most popular and valuable to collectors in today’s market. The clear glass Puffy shades were blown into a mold giving them the three-dimensional motif. The shades were then lightly frosted on the exterior

New Terrains: American Landscape Paintings From The Richard M. Scaife Bequest A superb selection of paintings given by Richard M. Scaife will go on view at the Brandywine River Museum of Art this spring. These works add significant depth to the museum’s holdings of American landscape painting and introduce the Hudson River School and American impressionist traditions. Many of the 25 paintings in the exhibition are by renowned artists that are new to the collection, such as John Frederick Kensett, Albert Bierstadt, Martin Johnson Heade, Alfred Bricher and William Merritt Chase. In 2014, Richard M. Scaife news publisher, art collector, philanthropist and longtime trustee of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art - left his extensive art collection to the Brandywine and to the Westmoreland Museum of Art in Greensburg, Pa., to be divided evenly. Scaife also

bequeathed Penguin Court, his estate in western Pennsylvania, to the Brandywine, adding over 1,000 acres to its protected lands - the single largest land acquisition in the organization’s history. Scaife was passionately interested in the varied traditions of American landscape painting, including California plein air artists. His collection featured paintings of sunlit marine scenes, bold mountain scenery and bucolic farmlands by 19th and 20th century painters, as well as contemporary artists, many of whom lived and worked in those regions. Scaife’s keen eye for collecting important Hudson River School painters of the mid-19th century offers

current special exhibition, “The Poetry of Nature: A Golden Age of Landscape Painting,” a premier selection of Hudson River School paintings on loan from the NewYork Historical Society, on view through Sunday, June 12. The Scaife bequest also brings to the collection marvelous examples of American impression by artists of the late 19th to mid 20th centuries, whose paintings are inflected with evidence of their study in Europe. The resulting work evidences an exciting and innovative approach to American landscape painting with vivid color and energetic brushwork - both hallmarks of the French impressionist style. A superb painting, “The Cherry Tree” by William Chadwick, embodies the impressionist palette, expressive brushstrokes and desire to capture the ephemeral moment in a composition bursting with springtime blossoms. Two extraordinary paintings by John La Farge, “Blue Iris with Apple Tree” and “Fountain in Our Garden at Nikko” reveal his absorption of the decorative aesthetic inspired by both French and Japanese art. These works and more in “New Terrains: American Landscape Paintings from the Richard M. Scaife Bequest,” attest to the collector’s extraordinary vision and generosity.
