Rarity Was Top Lot Of Morphy’s $3 Million Las Vegas Auction An effervescent sixfigure winning bid drove an extremely rare Coca-Cola prototype bottle to the top of prices realized at Morphy’s April 12, 13, and 14 auction in Las Vegas, Nev. The three-day offering of antique coin-op and gambling machines, Old West relics, and antique advertising chalked up more than $3 million, with $110,700 of that total attributable to the early-20th-century soft drink bottle. A bona fide American treasure, the modified prototype bottle was created by the Root Glass Company in 1915 and submitted to Coca-Cola executives for consideration as the design for their standard Coke bottle. After remaining out of sight for more than a century, the bottle was discovered in the

collection of a retired Coca-Cola employee who also had previously worked for Root Glass. According to Morphy Auctions president Dan Morphy, the test bottle is one of only two of its type known to exist and is the only fully intact example. “This bottle is a missing link in the history of Coca-Cola. From the moment it arrived in our hands, we knew it would create a buzz. It’s considered a highly important piece, not only by CocaCola collectors but also advanced bottle collectors,” according to Morphy. The new owner of the bottle is a private collector who prefers to remain anonymous. All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of a 23-percent buyer’s premium. To view the online catalog for Morphy’s Las Vegas auction, visit www.morphyauctions.com. Image courtesy of Morphy Auctions.

In remarkable condition with no chips, cracks or case wear, this 1915 modified prototype Coca-Cola bottle was designed by Earl R. Dean of the Root Glass Company. It is the only intact example of its type known to exist and sold within estimate for $110,700 on April 14 at Morphy Auctions in Las Vegas, Nev.

Interest And Prices Realized For Vintage Video Games And Prototypes Surging Limited Run Games Head To Auction On May 16, 17, And 18 Who could predict a copy of Nintendo’s Donkey Kong 3 (NES, 1986) and a rare cartridge of Nintendo World Championships (NES, 1990), the game played during the world’s first nationwide video game competition, are now enticing collectors to pay $20,000 or more for each at auction next month? The explosive demand for vintage video games, particularly those professionally certified, are now bringing big dollars at auctions, with no price ceiling in sight. A group of 53 such games and game prototypes will cross the auction block Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 16, 17, and 18, in Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Auction in Dallas, Texas, and on HA.com. “This Donkey Kong 3 is the fourth revision of this black box game, indicated in part by the presence of the hangtab under the shrink wrap,” said Heritage Auctions’ video game consignment director Valarie McLeckie. “This particular variant had a very small print window, and

This rare copy of Donkey Kong 3 (NES, Nintendo, 1986) is a Wata 9.2 A (seal rating) variant, and only a couple are known to exist. there are fewer than five of this variant confirmed in sealed condition. We anticipate this will be a very popular item with collectors.” These games and others are all sealed in hard plastic cases after certification by Wata Games, which has built a business based on collector nostalgia. Wata staff evaluates each submission based on condition, authenticity and historic context before the video game is encapsulated

in a case secured with six locking clips. Wata even preserves a prototype game’s data by “dumping” and storing it on a secure database, which will only be accessible using the firm’s unique Matrix code, a feature that will be released in the near future. The gray cartridge of Nintendo World Championships 1990 is one of fewer than 100 left from the 1990 Nintendo World Championships U.S. Tour. Some competitors’ parents expressed concerns that it was unfair that there was a Nintendo Power giveaway for the Gold version of these cartridges, but their kids who participated in the competition would not get one to keep. The offered copy is one of those given to satisfy those concerns, and it is believed that only 50 to 60 remain in existence. Many have torn labels, some with writing on them, meaning very few can be considered to be in true mint condition. Ironically, the cheaper glue that allowed some labels to lift up from the cartridges, and subsequently

were glued back down, now are considered a measure of authenticity. So rare are these cartridges that they have become the centerpiece of many collections. Sought-after prototypes offered in the auction include Adventure Island Prototype (NES, Hudson Soft, 1988), which, Wata Certified, may sell for more than $4,000, and collectors could also pay $4,000 for a copy of Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos Prototype (NES, Tecmo, 1990), Wata Certified. “Until now, prototype collecting was not as accessible to collectors because authenticating these handmade cartridges requires a great deal of specialized knowledge,” stated McLeckie. “Each prototype is completely unique as there were no standardized means of creation for these test cartridges. Now, with Wata certifying them, anyone can be much more confident that the prototype games they’re buying are genuine.” To learn more, readers may visit www.HA.com.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Coin collecting is one of the most diverse and intimidating segments of the greater antiques and collectibles trade, though, by far, coin collecting is among the most developed segments of the trade. It is not uncommon to see extremely rare coins sell for millions of dollars at high-profile auctions. Unfortunately, coin collecting is also a hobby that can be quite punishing to novice collectors. That said, both patience and study are rewarded in the field of numismatics unlike any other. There is virtually no other market that I know of where your success in the field is directly related to your own in-depth knowledge. Two exact same coins graded by the same third-party grading companies in the same condition can sell for drastically different sums at auction based solely on their individual eye appeal. I believe every collector should attempt to collect coins at least once in their lifetime in order to see if they like it. It is for these novice collectors that I have compiled this list of top tips for any upand-coming numismatist. 10. Read, read, and then read some more. The overall number of books being published on the antiques and collectibles trade declines every year thanks in part to the rise of the internet and digital age. That said, the amount of books being published on the subject

of numismatics is outstanding. Read “Inside the Rare Coin Market” by Q. David Bowers and “Pleasure & Profit: 100 Lessons for Building and Selling a Collection of Rare Coins” by Robert W. Shippee. Both books are good reads for any coin collector, novice or advanced. Then get yourself a copy of the yearly coin price guide titled “Red Book Guide to United States Coins.” 9. Research, research, research. Now that you have read the recommended books, you are ready to start researching what to study and what to possibly buy. Join some of the numerous online forums, and interact with other collectors and dealers. Both NGC and PCGS, two of the primary leading third-party graders of coins, both have excellent online forums. Avoid the drama and stay focused on learning all you can. Ask for advice, share your opinions, and also be respectful. A lot of experienced collectors are happy to help newcomers to the hobby. 8. Focus, focus, focus. It is tempting when starting to collect something new to go “all in” and start to buy, but this will only hurt you in the coin market. Decide what you want to focus on and be as specific as possible. My advice? Start with classic United States coinage from the 1800s and early to mid-1900s. Coins from the 1700s can be costly for most newbies. Coins produced after the 1950s are much too volatile in price and extremely common

in most cases. Pick a series and denomination and start there. Understand how coins are made and what makes a valuable coin valuable (Hint: It is not always about the mintage produced). 7. Join Heritage Auctions. It’s free to sign up even if you don’t have the means necessary to bid in some of their auctions. As a free member you will have access to their complete backlog of auction history/prices realized. If you are looking for an 1881-CC Morgan Dollar in MS-65, you can search their vast auction histories and see exactly what that coin sold for at various auctions. 6. Understand grading and get to know third-party grading. Both NGC and PCGS are highly respected thirdparty grading companies in the coin industry. That said, just knowing that isn’t enough. The industry also has CAC stickered coins, which is in a sense a third-party grading company that keeps both NGC and PCGS in check by agreeing to sticker any graded

coin they feel is of moderate to high quality for their given grade. CAC is actually doing a great job of disrupting the third-party grading of coins (which is a good thing), and some collectors will only collect coins that have been CAC certified. 5. Looking for possibly undervalued deals? Look no further than the graded paper money marketplace. While this list of tips is geared towards numismatic coins, in an upcoming article I will give my top tips for collecting paper money. The hobby of paper money has taken a backseat to coin collecting as of late, and it’s a buyer’s market at present time for notes that are not rare. Just know that a significant turnaround in this area of the market may not happen for years, if it even happens at all, but it should be noted that prices for some of the rarest items are still at all time highs, much like rare coins, which brings me to number four. 4. Rarities are increasing in value exponentially. While coins in the $500 to $5,000 range continue to eek out

understand that even if you leave out the extreme rarities and just go after what is available on the market, a type set of available U.S. coinage would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to put together in or around mint state condition. If this cost seems unsurmountable to you, have more realistic goals. 1. Have fun. Building any kind of numismatic collection can be quite rewarding and quite profitable if you understand the market and the risks. That said, it should be worth mentioning that the journey is not worth it if you are not going to enjoy it and have fun along the way. Building a great collection should be a marathon, not a sprint!

R033792

My Top Tips For Collecting Numismatic Coins

minimal gains and sometimes losses, coins that are considered rare, and selling for over $50,000 each, are increasing in value as wealthy collectors fight to own these museum pieces. I should clarify that I am by no means suggesting that you should take a second mortgage out or overextend yourself to buy these kind of rarities, but just know, the money currently in this end of the market is obscene. 3. Know your budget. There is absolutely no need to borrow money to buy most of the sought-after coins and currency on the market because so much is out there and always hitting the auction block as older collectors continue to sell. Have a plan and stick to it. Auction fever is for the naïve and gullible. 2. Have a plan. You should have a plan as to what kind of a coin collection you want to build before you start. I never recommend anyone pursue a type set of U.S. coins due to the cost, but if that is your goal

This talk will focus on the new discoveries the author has made about Warren following 25 years of research. Di Spigna will discuss this often forgotten early patriot and leader from Massachusetts, including his resistance activities toward the British Crown during the years 1765-75. Pulitzer Prizewinning author and historian Eric Forter has praised this book: “Joseph Warren has finally found the biographer that restores him to his place among the architects of American independence.” The talk will take place at Lafayette College’s Oechsle Center for Global Education on Wednesday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. The center is located in Room #107 at 53 S. College Drive, on the college’s campus in Easton, Pa. The book will be available for purchase, and the author will be conducting a book signing. Admission will be free of charge for the group’s members, but there is a requested donation of $6 for the general public. To learn more, readers may visit www.lvarrt.org.

Led Zeppelin Fully Signed Self-Titled Debut Album Sells For $32,156

This Led Zeppelin fully signed self-titled debut album sold for $32,156.

into the 1970s. Led Zeppelin’s eponymous debut released on Atlantic Records in January of 1969, roughly four months after the band played their first official concert together. By all accounts, the speed in which the group achieved success remains an unprecedented feat, with Page, then the only high-profile member of the group, footing the bill for the debut’s entire recording and mixing costs, a process that took a mere nine days. At the time of the album’s release, Led Zeppelin were in the midst of their first North American tour, a 36-date endeavor enabled by the tour cancellation of manager Peter Grant’s other big act, the Jeff Beck Group. Zeppelin’s nearly twomonth outing across Canada and the United States proved significant in the A Paul McCartney signed Hofner bass sold for growth and visibility of the band. Despite $26,487.

initial mixed reviews, Led Zeppelin I received 50,000 advance orders en route to the album reaching number 10 on the Billboard chart and earning a gold certification in July 1969. Led Zeppelin’s debut has since gone platinum eight times and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. “There are said to be fewer than 30 known fully signed Led Zeppelin albums known to exist, making this both rare and remarkable,” said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at RR Auction. “This example is made all the more interesting by Plant’s two signatures and humorous line.” The online Fine Autographs and Artifacts auction was conducted from March 15 to April 10. Other highlights were a Paul McCartney signed Hofner bass, which sold for $26,487; an Al Capone twice-signed interest note document, $25,060; and a Prince goldtone waist chain charm belt selling for $19,625. University Archives Online-Only Sale To Be Held May 15 Anyone looking to start, add to or complete their collection of signers of the Declaration of Independence will have that opportunity in University Archives’ online-only auction, set for Wednesday, May 15, starting at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. All but one of the Declaration’s 56 signers will be offered as individual lots, not as a set, many for the first time. “Rarely do you see a nearly complete set of Declaration signers come up for bid, especially as single lots,” said John Reznikoff, president of University Archives. “Some of these signatures have been off the market for a 100 years. This is a rare opportunity for collectors to own a piece of American history, or more than one piece if they’re filling in spaces in their collections.” Reznikoff is no stranger to Declaration signers. Twice before he’s sold several complete, once for well over $1,000,000. “That was one of the finest sets in existence,” he remarked, “and the buyer was more than happy to pay that much.” Reznikoff added he’s probably sold more Declaration signer material than any other auction house or dealer alive.
