From 1926 until 1937, the Nadelmans presented the voluminous collection, spanning six centuries and 13 countries, in their groundbreaking Museum of Folk and Peasant Arts in Riverdale, N.Y. The Nadelmans’ innovative museum was the first of its type in the United States; in fact, they were among the earliest collectors to use the term “folk art” to describe vernacular objects marked by exuberant color, flat pattern, and simplicity of form. The Nadelmans suffered financially with the stock market crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression, and by the early 1930s had begun to sell off works from their collection to finance its upkeep. In 1937, they sold the entire collection of some 15,000 objects to the NewYork Historical Society, which was in the midst of a building expansion and recognized the Nadelman trove as an opporA chalkware bust of a woman, plaster- tunity to capitalize on the conof-paris, paint, is from the New-York temporary surge of interest in Historical Society and purchased from the “common man.” The purElie Nadelman, 1937.1138. chase enlivened New-York

The exhibition will also trace the provenance of many of the Nadelmans’ purchases using data recorded on the curatorial cards of the Museum and Folk and Peasant Arts, which were retained by the family and had never been studied. Other highlights will include the regal chalkware bust of a woman (ca. 1800-50), highly valued by the Nadelmans. It represents a folk art type that may have influenced Nadelman’s “Bust of a Woman” (1882-1946), also on view. Can The United States Mint Reignite Interest In Numismatics?

Antiques • Furniture • Art • Jewelry • Collectibles since 1974

While the program brought attention to coin collecting for a brief period of time its overall effect was short-lived. The average pocket change collector grew tired of trying to collect all 50 state quarters and very few of these collectors took up coin collecting in a manner that had any kind of true impact on prices of key collector quality coins. Not to mention the fact that very few of those state quarters are worth anything more than a quarter at best. The run-up in precious metal prices that followed the economic crisis had more of an impact on coin collecting than any program the U.S. Mint could institute. That being said, as a collector who prefers classic coins I can verify that those lucky enough to get their hands on one of the 125,000 2016 Mercury Dime Centennial Coins will be more than pleased with their purchase. Just don’t expect the release of these incredible commemoratives to have any long-term effect on the field of numismatics. For that to occur, coin collecting would have to truly become en vogue again for a new generation of collectors that grew up playing Nintendo and watching Star Wars. Sadly, I don’t see that happening anytime soon, but as I have said many times before the underlying theme in the antiques and collectibles trade in the year 2016 is change ‌ unfortunately that doesn’t leave a ton of hope for the few remaining collectors of pocket change!

certified pieces of paper money in high grade just before the economic crisis that occurred in 2007/08. Unfortunately, those price increases turned out to be short-lived and the market has been in a general downturn along with the rest of numismatic hobby while other collecting fields continue to flourish and gain new ground. Classic video games, vintage advertising, and even vintage toys are starting to break price records on a regular basis - even for lackluster items that would not have received any bids just a few years ago. This all begs the question as to whether or not the release of these three centennial gold coins from the U.S. Mint could potentially reignite demand in the overall field of numismatics? Is the average classic coin collector who cherishes the unique designs of the Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, and Walking Liberty Half going to buy a current commemorative coin made out of gold and sold at a premium? On the other end of the spectrum, one could ask if the average U.S. Mint enthusiast who probably only purchases gold and silver coins strictly for their bullion content going to start collecting classic coins because of the commemorative launch of these three gold coins based off of classic designs? This isn’t the first time the U.S. Mint tried to revive the hobby of numismatics. Anyone remember the controversial 50 state quarter program launched in 1999?

S920729

At 12 p.m. on April 21, the United States Mint quite literally struck gold. It was at this exact date and time that lucky coin collectors and enthusiasts were able to purchase the 2016 Mercury Dime Centennial Gold Coin. Struck in 24 karat gold and containing one tenth ounce of gold, the coin is the first in a set of three gold centennial coins to be released this year to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of some of the most popular coinage in our nation’s history. Later in the year the U.S. Mint will also release a 2016 gold edition of the ever popular Standing Liberty Quarter (composed of a quarter of an ounce gold) and the highly anticipated gold edition of the Walking Liberty Half (composed of a half an ounce of gold). These three noted releases were highly anticipated since being announced last year. The 2016 Mercury Dime Centennial Gold Coin had a mintage of just 125,000 coins and went on sale with a retail price of $205. The coin sold through its entire mintage in less than two hours leaving a lot of customers furious that they could not get one. To be fair to the U.S. Mint, I had no issue getting two coins for myself and the mint had a well advertised yet controversial household limit of ten coins per addressee. Over the past few years, coin collecting has slowly

resolidified itself as a popular collecting field. It was unfortunately losing ground in part to an aging population. I know of very few hardcore coin collectors under the age of 40. In 2015, I sold a portion of my high grade coin collection compiled over a period of 15 years (from 1999 to 2014). It contained a series of key date coins spanning some of the most popular series from the 1800s through the 1940s. All of the coins were bought certified and graded by either PCGS or NGC in MS 63 to MS 66 condition. Highlights included the 1921 Peace Dollar in MS 63, the 1928 and 1928-S Peace Dollars in MS 64, and almost a complete set of Morgan Dollars minted at the coveted Carson City Mint in MS 63 through MS 66. I did not sell all of these, as I did keep some because I do consider Morgan Dollars minted at the Carson City Mint to be undervalued (even in the current lackluster numismatic market that encompasses this article). Ironically, almost a month hardly goes by without a high end auction house or the media announcing a new record breaking sale price for a rare museum quality coin. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only segment of the coin collecting market currently on fire. Affordable key date coins in collector quality condition through the mint state grades that lack rarity just aren’t increasing in price when compared to other collecting fields. I used to think that paper money collectors were on to something when prices started to increase for

dianthus pink glass sold for $210. The collection belonged to author John Carpenter. An authority on the subject, Carpenter self-published both a soft and hard-bound reference book titled “Peanut Butter Glasses And More” in 2014 along with co-author David Grayson. The definitive go-to book for all things Peanut Butter glass, this work features 1,400 color photos. The main emphasis of the book are Boscal peanut butter glasses. Including glasses and tumblers, “Peanut Butter Glass” was not all used to hold peanut butter. It is a field of collecting that has captivated generations who enjoy 20th century glass. Some were originally sold in boxed sets, some individually. There is a tremendous number of variates when it comes to color,

the spectrum is broad, but the Philadelphia show ranks among the best places to see a very vast array of the finest American antiques and art presented by established dealers in their fields. Lectures took place throughout the run of the show, among them, was one by Alexandra Kirtley of the Philadelphia Museum of Art titled “The Museum Curator as Collector, Value vs. Aesthetics.” Another was by Nancy Moses, author of the book “Stolen, Smuggled, Sold.” The cafe was catered by 12th Street Catering and sponsored by Pook & Pook Inc. It was called the Bulldog Cafe. Ron and Debra Pook have two English Bulldogs. Among the sales for Kelly Kinzle of New Oxford, Pa., asked $120,000 for the circa 1920s carved American antiques dealers and painted birdtree by Harvey Kinsey David Schorsch and Eileen (1878-1964) Lancaster County, Pa. After a year off, the Philadelphia Antiques Show, now called the Philadelphia Antiques & Art Show, returned in an energized and revived fashion on April 15 to 17 at the Marine Parade Grounds at the Navy Yard. The 54th show, a benefit for Penn Medicine, is a grand Americana Show and showcased an array of early decorative and fine art. Penn Medicine is known as HUP (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania). New show managers, Diana Bittel and Karen DiSaia found a worthy new location at the Navy Yard, where it had once been held. The show was most recently held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The committee placed a structured tent on the Navy Yard at South Broad Street and Intrepid Avenue, and plenty of free parking was available directly across the street. The Navy Yard has been built up over the last decade. It has a developed mix of industrial, manufacturing, and office uses. There are hotels and restaurants. Over 100 companies encompass the area - different from when the show was held at the complex’s passenger pier terminal nearby. By car, it is easily accessible just off of I-95. There was also a special shuttle bus to the show from the 30th Street Train Station. It was a show stopper. Friday evening at 8 p.m., the Antiques Dealers’ Association of America, Inc. (ADA) presented the 2016 ADA Award of Merit to collectors Joan and Victor Johnson of Philadelphia. The annual award recognizes contributions made to the field of American decorative arts. The Herrs also sold well. “We sold three major quilts, including the one in our ad, a Heyne chalice, a Boyd creamer, and other textiles,” said Don Herr. “This was our last show. It was good for us and we are very pleased.” The Herrs offered an unusual Pennsylvania figural redware bank in the form of a woman and dated 1831. It was priced at $6400. “We bought it from (J. Garrison) Gary Stradling years ago at the Philadelphia Show,” said Herr. The rare bank had sold for $600 in 1976 at the last of the famous Walter Himmelreich auctions held at Pennypackers. Barbara Israel specializes in antique garden ornament and furniture and is a leader in the field. “Opening day was very, very good. We ended up doing well, and I loved the

David Schorsch and Eileen Smiles of Woodbury, Conn. were first-time exhibitors to the show. Schorsch did exhibit at the Philadelphia Show with his mother in 1977. This miniature grain-painted cupboard from Lancaster County, Pa., was $22,000. A center piece item in the exhibit from dealer James Kochan was a very rare enlisted uniform from the Mexican Army (1846-48). The stories and photos of the items were also included in the show catalog. The Philadelphia Show is a high end show with elegance. It is THE most elegant show in terms of top tier early American antiques and fine art. Where Americana dealers at the Winter Antiques Show the grande dame of antique shows in this country - held every January in New York City showcase alongside international works, contemporary and modern art, antiquities, Asian, and English antiques the Philadelphia show is more focused on Americana.
