curatorial affairs and strategic art initiatives at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and curatorial consultant to Art Bridges. Created by collector and philanthropist Alice Walton in 2017, Art Bridges is dedicated to dramatically expanding access to American art across the country. “The sharing of American artworks has already brought together these outstanding organizations in an unprecedented new partnership model, unlike any we’ve seen in the museum field to date. As the initiative continues, we look forward to supporting the innovative work that these organizations will do to engage their communities through these powerful works of American art.” “We are pleased to be working with the Philadelphia Museum of Art to launch the Art Bridges and Terra Foundation Initiative in Pennsylvania as part of our nationwide program to engage local communities with outstanding works of American art in meaningful ways. Already this Pennsylvania cohort has yielded profound conversations and fresh ideas on how to achieve this. Created with local communities in mind, their collaborative exhibitions and programs will present American art in innovative ways, inviting audiences to be part of an alwaysevolving dialogue around it,” said Elizabeth Glassman, president and CEO of the Terra Foundation for American Art. Timothy Rub, the George D. Widener director and chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, identified the following museums as partners through a careful process of research and evaluation over the last two years: Allentown Art Museum Demuth Foundation (Lancaster Museum of Art and Demuth Museum, Lancaster)

State Sen. Patrick Browne (16th District, Lehigh Valley) serves as co-chair of the Pennsylvania Arts and Culture Caucus. He stated, “The unique initiative is transformational in the way it will expand the access to renowned collections of art to diverse audiences and communities across Pennsylvania. I applaud Art Bridges and the Terra Foundation for American Art for their financial commitment to this great opportunity and the Philadelphia Museum of Art for its leadership and interest in sharing its wonderful collection of art and history with other museums, including the Allentown Art Museum in my hometown. This program, as it nurtures cultural activity in our cities and towns, will also provide benefits to local economies through increased public engagement and tourism and will encourage more young people to draw inspiration from creativity.” The Allentown Art Museum has chosen Marsden Hartley’s “Blessing the Melon” (The Indians Bring the Harvest to Christian Mary), of about 1918, and two 18th-century Peruvian paintings, “The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, with Saints Francis of Assisi” and “Anthony of Padua along with The Annunciation,” for the

exhibition “Evolution of the Spiritual: Europe to America,” on view from Nov. 24 through May 24, 2020. The installation aims to expand the idea of what comprises American art and to reach diverse audiences whose history and traditions may not have been included in traditional narratives about the history of American art. The Demuth Foundation plans to borrow “Tulips,” 1917, an important work on paper by the modernist Charles Demuth, along with an additional Demuth flower subject from another partner, the Reading Public Museum. These exceptional works by the Lancaster native, one of the most outstanding American watercolorists of the 20th century, will complement the exhibition “Focus on Flora: Charles Demuth’s Florals,” on view in Lancaster through June 30. The Erie Art Museum has requested the loan of “Paul,” 1994, a painting by Chuck Close, to be paired with a selfportrait in a jacquard-woven textile done in the previous year by this contemporary artist. These works will be installed near the museum’s main entrance, where they will greet visitors beginning in the fall of this year. The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State has selected “Homage to the Square” (It Seems), 1963, a painting by the influential artist and educator, Josef Albers. It will be on view from Sept. 3 through Dec. 15 in an exhibition commemorating the legacy of the Bauhaus in art, design, and architecture. The presentation of the Albers will be closely linked to a major international symposium, “Bauhaus Transfers,” sponsored by the Stuckeman School of Architecture at Penn State. For its exhibition “Picturing Pennsylvania Barns,” on view from Sept. 15, 2019, through Jan. 5, 2020, the Reading Public Museum will create a focused installation in which its painting “Hill Road,” 1920, by George Sotter is displayed side-byside with two works by the modernist Charles Sheeler, lent by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Sheeler’s “Bucks County Barn,” 1918, a gelatin silver print, captures the same barn that appears in Sotter’s work and from very nearly the same angle. Sheeler’s luminous “Pennsylvania Landscape,” created seven years later, rounds out the grouping. In Carlisle, at Dickinson

College, the Trout Gallery plans to borrow five delicate silhouettes by Moses Williams, the early 19th-century cutpaper artist who grew up enslaved in the home of the Philadelphia painter Charles Willson Peale. Freed in 1804, Williams continued to work for the Peale family museum, cutting silhouettes; the group to be lent to the Trout Gallery includes portraits of members of the Peale family. The college, not far from the northernmost point of the Confederate advance during the Civil War, was founded by Dr. Benjamin Rush, whom Williams may have known in Philadelphia through his friendship with Charles Willson Peale. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg is borrowing “Penn’s Treaty with the Indians,” about 1830-35, and Ralph Blakelock’s “Indian Encampment,” about 1890. These paintings are presented in the exhibition “The Outsider’s Gaze,” which looks at images of Native Americans from the perspective of European-American artists working in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. It will serve as a companion exhibition to “Mingled Visions: The Photographs of Edward S. Curtis and Will Wilson,” on view through June 30. The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown borrowed a work by the acclaimed Bucks County impressionist Daniel Garber. A commanding, yet tender portrait of the artist’s young daughter, Tanis, is distinguished especially by its striking use of backlighting. It was painted in 1915 at Garber’s home in the Cuttalossa Glen, near New Hope, not far from the museum. The painting was presented in context with a large-scale mural by Garber and an installation of similarly-scaled murals by Edward Steichen. Timothy Rub, the Philadelphia Museum of Art director, noted that he was drawn to the Art Bridges and Terra Foundation Initiative because of the opportunity it offered to address an objective of the museum’s strategic plan. “While the Philadelphia Museum of Art lends its collection to museums around the world, we are also committed to working more collaboratively with sister institutions closer to home,” said Rub. “I am delighted that we are playing a leadership role in this promising initiative, knowing that it will build sustainable relationships and broaden the reach of our public service across the state.” Future phases of the project will culminate in the development of additional exhibitions, encompassing up to 25 works each, that will be drawn both from the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the partner institutions. The prohibitive cost of insurance and art shipping both make this type of loan program challenging and not feasible without such an innovative and generous grant.

Most people who come to see my collection assume that what is out represents the sum total of my holdings. Unbeknownst to them, the real secrets of my personal collection are housed in about 40 three-ring binders. There are the photographs, booklets, documents and advertising that document the history of daily life in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. I have collected paper for decades now, and I still do not get tired of being on the hunt for new items. Last week, it was a trade card for a Lancaster County coverlet weaver and a photograph of a Sioux Sun Dance in the 1940s. The variety of opportunities in collecting paper is endless. So the question is, why would you want to collect this sort of thing? Well, a few years ago I was asked to help an organization in re-creating a 19th-century town. I dug into the binders and found loads of original imagery that showed streets in various size towns. Here, instead of speculation, was the visual text of exactly how people lived and worked in small towns.

always easy. In the old days, you could go into a used bookstore, and they would have piles of paper that were used as bookmarks. Good, bad and indifferent, you could always find something. However, as fewer and fewer untouched libraries exist anymore and the used bookseller is truly an endangered species, it means you have to look to other sources. I love using eBay to find paper. Manipulating the search terms, one can track down paper pretty easily. Sometimes it is super cheap, like the 18th-century silversmith indenture that I got on eBay for $20, and sometimes it is expensive, like the coverlet trade card that was much more than that. In any case, a little knowledge and common sense can help you to find real treasures. So consider starting a paper collection to support your larger collection of antique treasures. A lot of paper can fit in a binder, so it is also a great collecting

Collecting paper is something I think both every specialized or general collector should do. So you collect bottles, then acquire the advertisements, labels and store images that illustrate their use in a given time. It is cool to have and, more importantly, can help your understanding of how people really used your collections. Some years ago, I found a really wonderful photograph of a young woman lying on a bed with a jacquard coverlet over her legs. The name and date in the corner block were clearly visible. It was a wonderful photograph that I later gave to a friend who is a weaver. She and I discussed that such documentary images of the use of coverlets (albeit later in the 19th century) were super rare. As a weaver, she valued the image, not only because of its rarity but also how it spoke to people actually using woven Pennsylvania coverlets in the period. Hunting for paper is not

and a large Statue of Liberty bank whose original paint is so exceptional, it was described by Bertoia Auctions President Michael Bertoia as “dripping wet,” collector jargon for the best to ever be seen. Also entered in the first session are approximately 80 cast-iron mechanical banks. Just a few of the standouts include a pristine Boy Scout Camp, a near-mint Multiplying bank, and an ultra-rare Bowling Alley bank. Collectors of pressed steel will find a selection awaiting them that is as comprehensive as they’ve ever seen in a single auction. There are both large and small vehicles in the mix, as well as a dozen pedal cars. Highlights include beautiful American National Giant Series trucks, an American National pedal car, Buddy ‘L’s, Keystone and Steelcraft pieces, and a broad assortment of Structo toys from the late Tiny Moyer’s collection. Nautical toys are led by a large Bing torpedo boat in superb condition, accompanied by its original box. Also part of the proud flotilla is a large grouping of working craft speedboats, battleships and other vessels from the Moyer collection. Cast-iron automotive toys are well represented by a large Vindex steam shovel, several cast-iron fire trucks and Hubley racecars. Additionally, there are cast-iron

An auction entry that conjures deja-vu at Bertoia’s is a cast-iron tricycle with painted wooden wheels and a metal seat whose cut-out design creates the words “Tom Thumb.” The late-19th-century production was purchased 30 years ago by Bertoia Auctions cofounder and antique toy dealer the late Bill Bertoia. However, before Bill resold the antique trike, it was kept at the family home, where Bill and Jeanne’s children, Michael and Lauren, happily posed with it for Christmas and Easter photos. One of those photos was actually featured in a cover story about Michael’s penny
toys (Antique Toy World, March 2019 issue). Now the tricycle has come full circle to Bertoia’s, consigned by the person who bought the toy from Bill three decades ago. Super-clean and ready to display with pride, the comic character toys in the sale are dominated by boxed favorites, such as the perennially popular Superman Tank and several Popeye toys. A wide range of Mickey Mouse and other Disney toys completes the amusing array. Both American and European toys will be pulling into the gallery to learn what their next destinations might be. Leading the way will be a Marklin 1 gauge blue locomotive pulling three refrigerator cars, fresh from a Wisconsin estate and graded a solid 10 out of 10. “It’s unusual to see a refrigerator car set as complete as this one. We think it could make $20,000 to $25,000 at auction, maybe more,” said Michael Bertoia. The large number of Halloween pieces to be offered actually comprises Part II of the same Pennsylvania private collection Bertoia’s debuted

Sharing the spotlight with the doorstops is a truly exceptional single-owner collection of figural string holders. They include an Ice Skater, Fairy Godmother, Dandy, and full-figure Black Cat Head. “Cast-iron collectors have a great appreciation for string holders because, in a very clever way, they incorporate beautiful design with a functional purpose,” said Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions A boxed Linemar Superman Fighting Tank, battery and an expert on fig- operated, pristine condition, is estimated at ural doorstops and $3,500-$5,500.

Fontaine’s Auction Gallery To Offer Striking Statement Pieces In May 18 Sale white Carrara marble sculpture, one of several artistic standouts in the sale. The sculpture depicts a nude sea nymph rising from the waves, her hands reaching up toward the sky, raised on a large carved marble pedestal and signed “Galli” on the back. Professor Fortunato Galli worked in late 19th century Florence. The statue stands 64 inches tall. Another choice example of marble statuary will come in the form of a pair of C. Lapini, Firenze 1886” on the base. The male figure stands 42 inches tall, and the woman, 40 inches tall. An unusual item represented in the sale will be of key interest to numismatists, a lot of 36 Mexican 50-peso gold coins. The front of each coin features a portrait of Winged Victory, a symbol for the Greek goddess of victory (Nike), and each coin weighs just over one troy ounce. Like Rays Of Sunshine: Little Golden Books Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson Getting your tonsils out isn’t so scary. Having a new baby sister can be sort of wonderful. It’s OK to be a poky little puppy, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a saggy, baggy elephant. You’re just right, just the way you are. Those words of wisdom come courtesy of Little Golden Books, the pint-sized publications that have delighted young readers (and the young read-to), since their introduction in 1942. In about 40 pages, filled with right-tothe-point text and plenty of
imaginative illustrations, their message is delivered succinctly. An adaptation of Disney’s “Dumbo,” for instance, sums up the story in one concluding sentence: “But best of all, Dumbo forgave everyone who had been unkind to him, for his heart was as big as his magical ears.” Ol’ Walt himself couldn’t have said it better. Little Golden Books have covered almost every topic of possible interest to tiny folk. Animals are always popular, from the Big Brown Bear, who should have listened to Mrs. Bear’s advice (“Don’t go near the beehive in the old dead tree!”), to those mitten-losing
“Three Little Kittens,” the first Little Golden Book, was a traditional story illustrated by Masha, 1942. “Three Little Kittens,” the subjects of the very first Little Golden Book (“Found your mittens? You good little kittens! Then you shall have some pie!”). There are holiday Golden Books (“Christmas Carols,” “Santa’s Toy Shop”); Golden Books based on children’s classics (“Hansel and Gretel,” “A Child’s Garden of Verses”); and even interactive Little Golden Books. “Fun With Decals” came with a page of decals (“Ask Mother where you “Tootle” by Gertrude Crampton was may put them”), while “Nurse illustrated by Tibor Gergely, 1945. “The Saggy Baggy” Elephant by K. & B. Jackson was illustrated by Tenggren, 1947.
“The Big Brown Bear” by LGB originator Georges Duplaix was illustrated by Tenggren, 1944. Engineer Bill’s cardinal rule: “Staying on the Rails No Matter What!” (“There is nothing but red flags for locomotives that get off their tracks”). And the Marvelous Merry-Go-Round let kids in on a (somewhat nightmarish) secret: those wooden animals on a carousel are actually real! (“The grownups look at the animals and say, ‘How charming! How quaint!’ But the children know, yes of course they do, the children know they’re alive”). George Duplaix of the Artists and Writers Guild came up with the idea of Little Golden Books, a joint project with Western Publishing and Simon & Schuster. The goal: to provide affordable, easy-tohandle children’s books as alternatives to the larger (and pricier) books then on the market. At 25 cents per book, the hope was to sell 50,000 copies at everyday retail outlets.
Within five months, over 1.5 million Little Golden Books had found their way into the hands of eager young readers (and their moms and dads). Much of the enduring appeal of Little Golden Books is due to the authors and illustrators who lent their talents to the series. Among the many contributors: Margaret Wise Brown, Garth Williams, “The Poky Little Puppy” by Janette Richard Scarry, Tenggren, Sebring Lowrey was illustrated by Eloise Wilkin, Corrine Malvern, Tenggren.
