Historic Rock Ford Receives Gift Of Rare Early Lancaster County Schrank
Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster, Pa., is delighted to announce that it has received a generous gift of a ca. 1750 Lancaster County schrank/wardrobe. This gift was received from Sabrina duPontLangenegger, the daughter and sole heir of William K. duPont, who died in 2020.
The Queen Anne schrank, boasting a unique bonnet top, is an important piece that is currently the only known example of its kind made in Colonial America. The schrank is of substantial size, standing at nearly 9 feet
high and 6 feet wide. It represents a German-trained emigre craftsman’s masterful traditional Continental marquetry work. The exquisite inlays, featuring scorching and line engraving, demonstrate an unparalleled level of detail and shading, particularly in the flowers and compass stars adorning the paneled doors. American walnut was used for both primary and secondary wood.
The schrank is in a remarkable state of preservation for its age. It features a majority of its original wrought-iron
hardware, and the pulls are nearly identical to a pair of wrought-iron pulls made in Chester County that are now in the Titus C. Geesey collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The turned feet, top central section of the cornice molding, and keystone are the only noted restorations.
“We are tremendously grateful to Sabrina duPontLangenegger for her generous gift and look forward to sharing this remarkable piece of Lancaster County history with our visitors,”

Early Spring Houdiniana And Magic Memorabilia Event
Realizes $629,000
Signature Auction Included Stellar Collection Of Books, Photographs, Lithographs, Props, And Other Rarities Related To Harry Houdini
Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of the 370-lot magicana sale held on April 13. It celebrated all things Harry Houdini (Hungarian/ American, born Erik Weisz, 1874-1926). The auction had a nearly 100 percent sellthrough rate. Prices noted include the company’s
20-percent buyer’s premium. The top lot in this Houdiniana sale was Guy Jarrett’s (1881-1972) book “Jarrett. Magic and Stage Craft Technical.” Estimated at $6,0009,000, it made a breathtaking $60,000. It was self-published by the author in 1936 in New York. This example was both a presentation
copy and the first bound copy. It was signed by Jarret “Guy Jarrett/Dec. 4th/’36” to Morris Blum. Its next owner, Larry Weeks (1919-2014), wrote about Jarrett, and this copy in particular, in a 1961 issue of the journal “Magical Bookie.”
Another book, Harry Houdini’s “The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin,” was estimated at $25,000-$35,000 and delivered $33,600. This presentation copy, first-edition book was published in New York in 1908. It featured a portrait frontispiece of Houdini guarded by tissue and a profusion of plates picturing rarities from Houdini’s collection. This near fine example was inscribed and signed by Houdini, possibly to his brother, Leo Weiss, M.D. The inscription read, in full: “To my real Pal /
Doc / with best wishes / and compliments of the / author. May you / enjoy reading my / book with as much pleasure / as the gathering of the / contents gave me. / Harry Houdini / (Ehrich Weiss).” This was one of a handful of autographs in Houdini’s hand extant using the Americanized spelling of his birth name, Ehrich Weiss. This signature example was the first of its type the auction house had presented for sale.
The original poster, “Buried Alive! Egyptian Fakirs Outdone. Master Mystifier. Houdini,” estimated at $8,000-$12,000, sold for $22,800. The ca. 1924 linen backed, eight-sheet lithographed poster was printed in Cleveland by Otis Litho. and measured 109-by-89 inches. It advertised a stunt that Houdini would never

“Jumbo Hippity-Hop Rabbits” was estimated at $500-$1,000 and traded hands at $22,800. This apparatus was made by the company Owen Magic Supreme around 1985. These stencil-painted pair of black and white rabbits each measured 26.5 inches tall and were marked on their undersides. According to Potter’s experts, this pair was the only model in this rare size that they had ever handled.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert
This Week: The Shipping Dilemma
By Peter Seibert
So, the other week, I made a purchase from a very good auction house in
upstate New York through one of the online auction platforms. Most of us are pretty comfortable with this way of bidding, and, frankly, it is a great way of finding stuff in out of the way spots. I generally always read the bidder instructions, but this time I missed out that the auction house was relying upon the shipping company run by the live auction platform.
I made my payment, which included the money for the item plus applicable premium and taxes as well as a $150 shipping charge. Today, shipping is expensive, and so I was not taken aback by this amount since
the object was an early 19th century oil-on-canvas painting and would become part of the museum’s permanent collection. This was on Feb. 4. I am sure you are already guessing where this story goes. Forty-five days later, having filed a dispute with American Express (who are great about resolving such issues) and a complaint with the New York Better Business Bureau, the painting magically arrived. Lots of hours communicating with a sender who apologized profusely but not surprisingly was unable to get the job done.
My reason for telling this tale, in addition to venting
National Watch & Clock Museum Extends S-Town Exhibit
The National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia, Pa., has extended its special exhibit, “S-Town Exquisite Clocks,” to run three more months due to continued public interest. The exhibit will be up until July 31.
Home to North America’s largest collection of clocks, watches, and horological artifacts, the National Watch & Clock Museum is honored
to exhibit examples showcasing the talent of John B. McLemore, the focus of the acclaimed podcast “S-Town” from the makers of “Serial” and “This American Life.”
Brian Reed, host and executive producer of the “S-Town” podcast, said, “Clocks were John’s livelihood, but they were also the lynchpin of some of his most important relationships. The
exhibit is a celebration of John’s technical and artistic skill: an homage to this incredible life’s work and the lasting impact he had on his field.”
More than just the inspiration for the well-known “S-Town” podcast, which riveted millions of listeners when it broadcast in 2017, McLemore was a highly accomplished clockmaker who restored fine clocks back to their full splendor. He was particular about the way that he worked and carefully replicated historical methods to ensure the accuracy of his work.
His commitment to that accuracy may well have cost McLemore his life; he used fire-gilding to apply gold to his clocks. The old method produces beautiful results, but it relies on melting mercury with gold and produces extremely toxic mercury vapors. Years of breathing that poisonous gas likely took its toll. The exhibit, however, is a celebration of John B. McLemore’s life and work.
“The exhibit of McLemore’s workmanship at the National Watch & Clock Museum provides an inspiring representation of one man’s passion for preserving horological history for the next generation,” said executive director

a bit of ire on my part, is to talk about the need for auction houses to provide shipping for their buyers. In buying online, I have used all the suggested options ranging from local UPS stores to the auction platform’s shipper to the auction house’s internal shipper. And if asked which I prefer, the answer, hands down, is with the auction house’s internal shipping department. Why? Because I have found that the smart auctions who use their own shippers are more self-aware of their reputations. Ouch, that is harsh to say, but I would argue that those houses that bring it inside want to maintain the best relationships with their customers rather than rely on a potentially unreliable outside shipper.
Now to inoculate myself, I am sure there are readers who have had bad experiences with in-house shipping by auctions. But I would
argue that your avenue for making it right is far easier than a third-party outsider who you do not know.
For auction houses, I know that in-house shipping can be a pain, especially with overseas bidders. And yet, with most houses selling a majority of their lots online, it frankly is just part of doing business, based on reputation alone. It is important to keep the feedback from your clients high. And if you doubt me, I encourage you to look at the online negative to positive ratio in houses that handle their own shipping compared to a third-party outsider. I have looked, and it’s clear the ones who use the third party not only have more negative feeback, but the auction houses, for the most part, are clearly unable to respond online to the complaints about a third party.
So even as much as many
houses hate to ship, it is the way of the world, and I would encourage you to get some wrapping tape and take care of your customers.

Spring Madison/Bouckville Slated For May 31 To June 2
Madison and Bouckville are two small villages between Syracuse and Hamilton, N.Y., and will both become thriving metropolises for the weekend of Friday, May 31, to Sunday, June 2, to all who love antiques and early collectibles.
Attracting about 2,000 exhibiting antiques dealers and many thousands of shoppers, the main street,
which is Route 20 connecting the two tiny towns, will be reduced to a 15 mileper-hour speed zone. Drivers look for the most convenient parking for the next field they next want to shop. In fact, the driving lanes of the road are reduced for all the pedestrian traffic along the road as well.
This spring show features a dozen show fields. All fields have free admission,
and the local tourist board claims about 10,000 shoppers will arrive for the shopping spree. There is plenty of parking for the early birds, some of which is charged and some free of charge. Food service is available on most show fields.
Northern New York State has been well known as a source for antiques, especially American made 18thand 19th-century furniture, textiles and household accessories. This rich history creates an environment at this market and again from Aug. 12 to 18 when the main Madison/Bouckville event takes place.
Over the years, names have changed, owners have retired and sold to other show managers, but the fields continue to thrive as both Spring and Summer Madison/Bouckville remain two of the country’s premier opportunities for finding great early American treasures. Among the larger show fields, Cider House Antiques has been adding several features since ownership changed, to include free parking, a large campground, and very good food service.

across the road and among the markets with a permanent building onsite, giving weather protection for the exhibitors. The East Expo is only two booths deep from the street and about a quarter mile long with several multi-dealer tents. Butternut Hill will be under new management. Bounty Hunters Will Find The Rarest Rocket-Launching Boba Fett Action Figure In Heritage’s
“Star Wars” Auction Sale Scheduled For May 31
It’s almost that time, so let Heritage Auctions be the first to say: May the Fourth be with you.
This year’s was a particularly special “Star Wars”
day, too, with the launch of the Friday, May 31, “Star Wars” Signature Auction, which features the most coveted “Star Wars” toy never made in 1979, one of the
two surviving hand-painted, missile-firing Boba Fett action figures pulled from the production line. Man, oh, Mandalorian.
This 3.75-inch Boba Fett stands tall among this event’s nearly 175 lots, including the lightsaber Luke Skywalker and Rey shared in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” a Lucas film-sanctioned Darth Vader helmet, armor and chest box made for early 1980s promotional tours, early and rare (and even cast-signed) posters, and one of the scant few surviving sealed copies of the original “Star Wars” videocassette that came in the coveted drawer box.
The event spans the beginning of the beginning of “Star Wars,” as represented by a revised fourth draft of George Lucas’ script when the movie was still titled “The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as Taken from the “‘Journal of the Whills’”

Here is one of the two surviving handpainted, missile-firing Boba Fett action figures pulled from the Kenner production line, a “Star Wars” Prototype Rocket-Firing Boba Fett L-Slot/ Hand-Painted AFA 60 (Kenner, 1979).
(Saga I), to the modern-day sequels and streaming iterations. There’s material from the movies: “Death Star panels! Ewok heads! Darth Maul’s lightsaber!” Material made to promote the movies includes the only known gem-mint Han Solo and Princess Leia stickers from Topps’ first series of “Star Wars” trading cards. Whether Rebel or Imperial, this is the auction you’re looking for.
It begins with the little bounty hunter with the hefty price on his head, the Boba Fett action figure that has achieved what ABC News once called “mythic, unicorn-like status.”
At first, the figure was intended as a giveaway: “FREE BOBA FETT,” exhorted the in-store displays, the action-figure packaging and TV ads in 1979, shortly after the armored (and, then, animated) figure debuted as “Darth Vader’s right-hand man” in the “Star Wars Holiday Special.” All a kid, or their parents, had to do was provide proof they had purchased four other “Star Wars” action figures. In return, within six to eight weeks, they would receive Kenner’s 21st “Star Wars” action figure with the “rocket firing back pack.” Even better, said the promos: “Boba Fett not available in any store.” To a kid for whom the force awakened their collecting bug, that sure put the bounty in
bounty hunter.
Except, quite famously, that rocket-loaded Boba Fett never arrived in the mail, or anywhere else, after reports surfaced in early 1979 that competitor Mattel’s “Battlestar Galactica” plastic-missile-firing toys had become choking hazards. When he finally did arrive in a plain white box, the rocket had been glued into place, and there was a “Note to Consumers” explaining why the change had been made: “The launcher has been removed from the product for safety reasons.”
Some Kenner employees spared the rocketfiring Boba Fetts destined for the Sarlacc pit. That’s how the few surviving prototypes became the most sought-after “Star Wars” toy in this galaxy or any other, what Entertainment Weekly’s Andrew Breznican once called “the fulfillment of a broken promise.”
“Projectiles were always touchy subjects,” says former Kenner engineer Jacob Miles III, an original member of the company’s “Star Wars” team tasked with keeping that rocket safely in Boba Fett’s backpack. “But when ‘Battlestar Galactica’ had their issues, we immediately just shut it down and destroyed everything. We were concerned about disappointing kids because we had shown that thing (the rocket) taking off. But we had a much bigger concern if we shipped it.”
This Boba Fett has the
www.stingerfineart.com
L-shaped latch in the back, of which there are some 70 known examples of the surviving 100 (or so) prototypes. As longtime “Star Wars” expert and dealer Brian Rachfal notes in his letter of provenance, “It’s uncertain exactly how many Rocket Firing Boba Fetts were created,” or survive 45 years later. But this is absolutely among the rarest.
“One of only two examples known, this handpainted figure is still unique in its class,” Rachfal writes, as it’s the only one with its head and appendages painted gray. This AFA-graded, CIB-authenticated figure has been so thoroughly examined that
hobby historians can pinpoint where it was made (“Kenner’s 10th floor at the Kroger building” in Cincinnati, Ohio), how it got out (“it was salvaged from a box of discarded toys deposited there for employees to take home”) and where it eventually landed (with Justin Kerns, revered among Boba Fett-ishists as he once had nine unique survivors from the discarded lot).
The diminutive Boba Fett figure, which Kenner kept small so kids could collect them all, is an imposing figure in an auction full of centerpiece offerings, among their considerable ranks is a Mandalorian helmet Pedro Pascal
wore in season two of “The Mandalorian” and during his appearance on “The Book of Boba Fett.”
Acolytes will take particular pleasure in perusing the armory filled with iconic lightsabers that glow like kyber, among them the Jedi’s weapon built by Anakin Skywalker that Obi-Wan Kenobi handed over to Luke before it was thought lost (along with Luke’s right hand) during Vader and son’s duel on Bespin in “The Empire Strikes Back.” This is the so-called Skywalker Lightsaber kept by Maz Kanata that beckoned to Rey in “The Force Awakens,” the saber that binds the Skywalker family and the “Star Wars”
franchise in a bolt of blue. Every saber in this auction has countless stories attached to it, whether it’s Kylo Ren’s so-called crossguard lightsaber from “The Last Jedi,” Darth Maul’s saberstaff famously wielded in “The Phantom Menace,” or the shared stunt saber used by General Leia and Rey in “The Rise of Skywalker.” Each is more than just a prop from a movie; each holds the weight of an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. Then again, so too is the limited-edition “Mandalorian” pinball machine. As a wise man likes to say, “This is the way.” To learn more, visit www. HA.com.

California Gold
A large California Gold Rush-era gold and quartz nugget sold for $25,000; an original 1881 photograph of a 13-man posse in Arizona brought $8,750; and a trove of letters from 1883-86 pertaining to the “Bisbee Massacre” and Apache attacks in Arizona brought $12,187 in Holabird Western Americana Collections’ Wild West Relics Auction split between two weekends, April 6 and 7 and April 13 and 14, online and live at the gallery in Reno, Nev.
It was a massive event, one that required a break between Sessions 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. It had 2,300 lots come up for bid in over 60 collecting categories over the four days. The sale came on the heels of a timed auction held two weeks earlier that also saw a lot of action.
Day one contained 563 lots of art, jewelry, Native Americana, maps, World’s Fair/Expositions, books, autographs, photographs, tools and the Wilcox photo archive.
The Wilcox archive comprised hundreds of photographs taken ca. 1860-64 by Dr. Timothy Wilcox, an Army physician assigned to many of the Western forts, including Fort Huachuca in Arizona. It changed hands for $2,625. But the top lot of the day was the 1881 mounted original albumen photograph of the 13-man posse that was sent from Tucson to Yuma, Arizona,

to arrest one of the Goldwater brothers for fraud in a suspected major retail goods swindle ($8,750).
A ca. 1660, full edition copy of “Il Capitolo dei Frati,” handwritten in ink by Jesuit monk Sebastiano Chiesa, controversial for its time and banned by the Catholic Church (just owning a copy was punishable by death), fetched $5,000. Also sold was an archive of photos and personal papers from Oliver Parker Fritchie, a visionary who owned electrical vehicle and wind power businesses in the early 20th century. He was awarded his initial battery patent in 1903 ($3,125).
There were several stunning squash blossom necklaces in the auction. Chief among them was a stunning example with dark blue turquoise in a dark brown to black matrix, crafted ca. 1960 by Jimmy Long, the spouse of Navajo silversmith Helen Long ($3,250), and an equally fine vintage Navajo necklace set in sterling silver, 24 inches in length, with ten turquoise nuggets up the necklace portion and another seven set in the naja at the base of the piece ($2,875).
An early copy of Italian Renaissance artist Raphael’s masterpiece from ca. 1815-16, “The Madonna of the Chair” (or “Madonna della Seggiola / Sedia”), went for $3,875. The original is housed at the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy. Also,
a ca. 1908-11 Russian icon of “Our Lady of Kazan,” with three colors of gold plate over .875 silver oklad, a rose gold halo and yellow gold robes, the icon and frame seated inside a custom glass-top box, sold for $2,000.
Day two featured 580 lots of 3D collectibles, clocks, musical items, furnishings, clothing, flatware, advertising, general store, bottles, saloon, gaming, tobacciana, cowboy, entertainment, circus, toys, sports, transportation and railroad, political, military, firearms and weaponry, and general ephemera.
One of the day’s top earners was an archive of hardware and library material from the private collection of a Spy Craft OSS (Office of Strategic Service, which later became the CIA) member during WWII, which commanded $8,750. Also, a near-mint example of a marked Virginia & Truckee Nevada railroad lantern from around 1915, the globe etched, “V. & T. Ry” and the very top marked with embossing, garnered $2,375. It was one of about 50 railroad lanterns in the sale.
