Local Folk Art Excels

Horst Auctioneers in Ephrata, Pa., held a two-day 813-lot catalog sale on April 14 and 15. The total gross for the multi-consignor sale was $215,340. Horst does not charge a buyer’s premium for in-house bidding. There is a 10-percent premium for absentee and online bidding. The majority of the iron in the sale came from the John Tyler collection and John Tannehill collection. Tyler was a curator at the William Penn State Museum (PHMC) and a blacksmith. He and his wife, Darlene, wrote a book, “Early American Cast-Iron Holloware,” in 2014. The late Tannehill was a professor at Millersville and collected

tools and utensils among other American metalware. Horst will be selling more Tannehill items in an upcoming speciality tool sale.

Regional folk art often does well at Horst, in particular, Hattie Brunner paintings. Brunner (1889-1982) was a well-known antiques dealer in Reinholds, Pa. Late in her career she began painting in watercolor, ca. 1958. Her primitive farm and auction scenes have always been collectible and have a large audience in today’s market. An 18-by-13-inch framed winter scene (1971) with a brick farmhouse and man on horseback in foreground sold for $5,400. A similar winter scene depicting a covered bridge

All fields have free admission, and the local tourist board claims around 10,000 people attend the June shows. There is plenty of parking, some of which is at a charge and some free of charge.

Over the years, show names have changed, owners have retired and sold to other managers, but the fields continue to be one of the country’s premier opportunities for finding great early American antiques. Among the larger fields, Cider House Antiques has been adding several features since being taken over by Jim and Ruth Dutcher a decade ago, such as free parking, a large campground and quality food service.

Hattie Brunner Painting Realizes
Unusually large for a Hattie Brunner painting, this framed 30-by-21.75-inch autumn auction scene, ca. 1975, sold to a local collector for $26,500. The original receipt from Brunner to the late dealer Walter Himmelreich to Robert Wiker in 1976 ($1,000) was included. The black leather wall pocket pin cushion with birds, heart, star, initials “F.R.” ex. Joyce Leiby, attributed to a Lancaster County, Pa., saddlery shop, brought $1,050. Martin,” a select 26-lot sale to be held Sunday, June 4, highlights the passionate collecting activity and discerning eye of Sydney Martin. through prestigious loans to local institutions. “We’re delighted and honored to bring the esteemed collection of Sydney F. Martin to market,” said Freeman’s chairman Alasdair Nichol. “The selection itself is remarkable, having been carefully collected by Martin and his wife, Sharon, over several decades, and reveals the couple’s deep Pennsylvania roots. It’s also an occasion to bring together the strengths for which Freeman’s is best known: sales of Pennsylvania Impressionists and single-owner collections.”

The sale is led by Edward Redfield’s “Spring Veil,” offered at an estimate of $300,000-$500,000, which represents one of the most powerful springtime scenes ever executed by Redfield. The enormous canvas depicts the Valley of Point Pleasant in full bloom. Widely exhibited, this exemplary canvas constitutes the pinnacle of Pennsylvania Impressionist collecting opportunities.

Daniel Garber’s “The Delaware River” is a newly rediscovered and fresh-tomarket landscape depicting a bend in the river near New Hope, Pa. Fern Coppedge’s “Winter from Skillman’s” offers a quintessential view of Lambertville, N.J., as seen from New Hope, one of the artist’s sought-after winter scenes. The auction also presents “A Glorious Day,” a summer Bucks County scene by Morgan Colt, a colossal talent and founding

member of the New Hope School whose work remains desirable in the marketplace. The sale also features several works by John Fulton Folinsbee, including the oneof-a-kind “Golden Afternoon,” an autumnal triptych commissioned in 1920 that displays the artist’s masterful brushwork.

Alongside Martin’s esteemed Pennsylvania Impressionists collection is a selection of seven works by William B. T. Trego, a Pennsylvania painter best known for his military works.

The auction includes several American Civil War scenes. Sydney and Sharon Martin, longtime Doylestown, Pa., residents, were driven by a deep sense of loyalty and love for their region and its rich

The True “Power” Of Nintendo Collector Anecdotes And Antics

time, Nintendo also knew that in order to successfully launch their new brand in the United States, they would need an effective print advertising campaign. The first attempt to do this was a simple newsletter-like publication that was given free of charge to anyone who registered their original Nintendo Entertainment System upon purchase.

In the antiques and collectibles trade, magazine collecting has never really been considered a top tier collecting category. Even with the advent of third-party grading for magazines, very few iconic magazines have garnered a cult-like following. One exception to this rule is vintage Nintendo Power magazines. First published in 1988, with a cover date of July/August 1988, there were over 3.6 million copies of the first issue of Nintendo Power produced. The majority of these magazines were given out by Nintendo free of charge to drum up interest in their new magazine. By the time the publication went into print, Nintendo mania was in full swing.

But, before we talk about the power of Nintendo Power, we have to talk about why this even matters at all. The original Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as the NES) was launched in 1985, and after successfully completing a test market run in New York City and Los Angeles simultaneously, the system took North America by storm in 1986. By 1987, almost every kid in America would want to own a Nintendo. Nintendo capitalized on this by releasing brilliant television advertising that graced consumers’ living rooms with taglines such as, “Now you’re playing with power!” Given that there was no internet or social media formats during this

Nintendo Fun Club, as it was called, was a simple, severalpage newsprint-like publication that was sent free of charge via mail. The publication would last only seven issues before being discontinued and replaced with a bigger and better option.

Nintendo Power was seen as the answer, and issue one would feature an iconic cover that showcased Nintendo’s new blockbuster game, “Super Mario Bros. 2,” which every Nintendo enthusiast wanted to own.

I was one of the lucky enthusiasts who was sent a copy of this publication, and I fondly remember what it was like to have this come in the mail. Most of the Nintendo enthusiasts who received this first issue back in 1988 read and abused their copies. I remember taking mine everywhere with me, from school to my bedroom and the dining room table. My parents were forced to order me a full subscription to the publication in hopes I would stop talking about it. Very few of these first issues were saved and preserved in near-mint condition, even though the magazine was originally well packed and came in a plain manila envelope. Nintendo Power would prove to be a massive success for the company and would be discontinued with issue 285 in December 2012. In December 2017, Nintendo decided to name a Podcast after the publication as a tribute to the power (pun intended) of the brand. Looking through old issues of Nintendo Power today is like recovering your lost youth if you were lucky enough to grow up in the late

1980s and early 1990s. The magazine just drips with nostalgia. Until the past few years, most vintage issues of Nintendo Power magazine, even early ones, did not have a lot of monetary value on the secondary market. There are, however, several reports of the first issue selling for amounts of $1,000 or less over the last decade or so, even in what was perceived to be near-mint condition. However, with the advent of third-party grading coming to vintage video games, it was only a matter of time before interest in all early Nintendo video game merchandise started to become en vogue. When thirdparty grading started being offered for magazines, interest in early Nintendo Power magazines took off, with issue one being the most desired.

Warnings about the perceived rarity of Nintendo Power issue one in near-mint condition started to prove true back in 2022. On Nov. 4, 2022, Heritage Auctions auctioned off a Nintendo Power issue one graded by CGC in 9.4 (near mint) condition. The book fetched a respectable $24,000 at auction and cemented itself as a top tier Nintendo collectible. Enthusiasts and critics alike took to various collecting forums to tout or criticize the sale. There are only a handful of these issues known to be in near-mint or better condition and, in all honesty, given what certain high-grade comic books sell for, the $24,000 amount does not seem that ridiculous. Very few collectors would be able to predict at that time what a copy in 9.8 condition would sell for, but make no mistake, that question would be answered soon!

Then on April 23, 2023, Heritage Auctions sold a 9.8 copy for a record price of $108,000. To put this in perspective, another first issue of Nintendo Power in this same auction yet graded in 7.5 condition (very fine minus) sold for only $1,020, which shows just how condition-sensitive collectors are when looking for collectibles like this.

Special Memorial Day Weekend Sale

Set For Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall

Annual Sale Scheduled For May 27 To 29

The Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall will host its annual Memorial Day Weekend Sale from Saturday, May 27, through Monday, May 29. Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall is located at 3371 Lincoln Highway East in Paradise, Pa., on Route 30. It is four miles west of Route 41 and six miles east of the Rockvale Square Outlet Mall in Lancaster County.

The huge, 26,000-squarefoot facility houses a wide variety of antiques and collectibles displayed by over 125 dealers. Merchandise featured includes items such as furniture, glassware, sterling silver, clocks, advertising, jewelry, fine china, toys, books, postcards, trains, Christmas items, pottery, linens, primitives, kitchenware, and much more.

Housed inside the antique mall is an Old Time General Store. Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall offers convenient

parking for over 100 vehicles, with a spacious area for campers, trailers, and tour buses. The shop is clean, climate-controlled, brightly lit and carpeted.

Shop-goers may also want to visit the stores out in front of the mall. Not Just Baskets of Cackleberry Farm is a unique gift shop filled with quilts, baskets, candy, gifts for pets, candles, framed prints, and all sorts of of other great gift ideas. Many items in the wide assortment of merchandise are on sale for a limited time.

Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5

According to the CGC census that lists how many copies they graded and in what grade, there is only one copy of Nintendo Power issue one in 9.8 condition, none in 9.6 condition (the next grade under) and four total in 9.4 condition. This proves this magazine is quite scarce. I want to make sure readers understand the price difference between a 7.5 versus a 9.4 versus a 9.8 conditioned copy because when I write an article like this, I occasionally get contacted by someone who claims to have the item in question. Almost always the item is nowhere in near mint condition, so while almost any copy of Nintendo Power issue one does most certainly have some value on the secondary market, very few would be worth grading, let alone have the value of a 9.4 or 9.8 copy specified above.

Regular readers will note that I have been especially harsh on the price points that certain vintage video game collectibles have obtained over these past few years, as the market was in a

speculative euphoria for quite some time. This, however, is actually one sale that I agree with due to the definite rarity of locating this item in near-mint or better condition. The name Nintendo Power sure seems to fit. Until next time, thanks for reading.

A Painted Red Earthenware Jar Marked “Mason & Co. Phil.”

In the late 18th and early 19th century, many forms of shoe polish became available in Europe, especially in England, yet then it was rarely referred to as shoe polish or boot polish. Instead, the product was often called blacking, specifically when mixed with lampblack, or referred to as dubbin, a type of prepared grease used for softening or waterproofing leather.

Furthermore, tallow, an animal by-product, was also used to manufacture a simple form of shoe polish. For instance, in Chicago, where 82 percent of the processed meat consumed in the United States during that period was

Here is an advertisement for the James Mason & Company that shows the five-story brick and granite building adorned with a sign reading “Blacking” on its roof at 108, i.e., 138-140 N. Front St. Mason & Co. occupied the building following its completion in 1851 and tenanted the site until 1919. The building, built 1850-51, was demolished in 1973. which was available in either small wide-mouthed stone tubs, slabs wrapped in oiled paper or in circular tin-boxes, about three inches in diameter and half or three-quarters of an inch thick. Tinned blacking paste was at this time exclusively for Army use, where some of the tins read, “Yet, as the soldier’s boots or shoes must to some extent emulate the brightness and glitter of the boots of those who pay for battles instead of fighting them, a portable blacking apparatus is provided.”

Mason & Company of Philadelphia

James S. Mason (1811-88) was born to James Mason and Alice Heywood in Lancashire, England, in 1811. He came to Philadelphia with his parents around 1830 and founded

processed in the stockyards, the city became a major shoe polish producing area.

In London, the Warren brothers, Thomas and Jonathan, started to make blacking ca. 1795 to 1798, initially in partnership with each other, and then branching off establishing their own competing companies. Interestingly, Jonathan Warren’s Blacking company is noted as the first employer of the young Charles Dickens (1812-70) at

the age of 12 in 1823. The main competitor to the Warren companies in London was the Day & Martin Company established in 1801.

Details of the operation of Day & Martin in 1842 reveal that the blacking they produced was in two forms, bottled liquid and a thick paste

James S. Mason & Company about 1832, which was a manufacturer of shoe blacking and ink pigments. His blacking was basically tallow and lamp black.

In 1851, James S. Mason & Company constructed a building at 138/140 Front St. where ultimately 10 million boxes were produced annually to hold tins of blacking. He employed 200 workers. Later, tins of blacking were labeled as Mason Shoe Polish.

and horse-drawn sleigh realized $7,000. The star painting, however, was a large 30-by21.75-inch framed autumn auction scene, ca. 1975, which sold to a local collector for $26,500. The original receipt from Brunner to the late dealer Walter Himmelreich to Robert Wiker in 1976 ($1,000) was included. Autumn auction scenes tend to be among the

most popular of her works, and few of her paintings were of this size. The current marketplace does not seem to be slowing down for Brunner’s Pennsylvania German “Grandma Moses” style work.

The photos and captions show a small sampling of of the diverse country sale.

The next catalog sale will be in the summer (date to-bedetermined).

on-site, giving weather protection for the exhibitors. East Expo is only two booths deep from the street but then is about a quarter-mile long, with several multi-dealer tents. Quaker Acres West reopened last year, adding to their support from the Boyce family’s shop, which will also be open throughout the weekend hosting at least 150 exhibitors and parking in the rear. There are many more shows, but as they are connected, covering them for good picking is easy for the shoppers. Food service is

plentiful.

Set-up is Thursday, June 1, for the dealers, with most fields allowing shoppers to enter as the exhibitors unload their vans, trailers, and trucks. Hotels for visitors and dealers are the major chains in Utica and Syracuse as well as several in the nearby college town of Hamilton. Madison-Bouckville is a country crossroads 25 miles south of Syracuse and southwest of Utica.

stands at this mid-18th century Cumberland County furnace. Today, the Appalachian Trail runs next to it by the historic Ege stone arch bridge over the Yellow Breeches creek. A cast iron Indian maiden doorstop, ca. 1868-80, the pattern being from a Brown’s Celebrated Indian Herb Bitters bottle, sold for $650. The star design penny rug sold for $425. It was from a 24-lot consignment of the late Tex Johnson. Selling for $525 was this large 19th century iron anchor. The framed watercolor fraktur drawing of two chickens facing each other, some stains and fading, likely Southeastern Pennsylvania origin, realized $3,600. The Madison-Bouckville Antiques Week, late Spring edition, will take place June 2, 3, and 4.

Hand-Book of the Great Manufactories and Representative Mercantile Houses of Philadelphia, in 1867,” Edwin Troxell Freedley wrote, “Philadelphia has the largest Blacking Manufactory in the United States, and, with one exception, probably the largest in the world. We allude to that of James S. Mason & Co., 138 and 140 North Front street, which was found by the senior partner about 35 years ago. All the operation of manufacturing both Blacking and Ink are conducted here on a vast scale. Nearly two million sheets of tin are consumed in this one establishment, and about ten

The men carry a banner reading, “Mason’s (Original) Challenge Blacking (Philadelphia),” as well as boots, and signs spelling “M-AS-O-N.” In the right background, a crowd of spectators, including figures likely representing Germany, the Ottoman Empire, Britain, and possibly France, stand and watch the competition attentively. The scene also includes boxes of Mason’s Challenge Blacking.

St. Louis Exposition. And even though the shapes and design are more sophisticated, this type of painted terracotta ware was made at Galloway and Graff in 1881, such as some objects that are displayed in the Cincinnati Museum of Art in Ohio.

Even more so, if this pot was not produced by Galloway, then I suspect it was made by another local manufacturer and, either way, likely represents two different successful businesses working in the Philadelphia area in the 19th century.

Among the interesting artifacts that survive from Mason & Company today is a small 19th century red earthenware or terracotta jar. The jar may have been a commemorative object used for advertising, although it may have also held a product that the company manufactured and sold.

“Mason’s Blacking” is now a standard article of commerce.”

Mason & Company also heavily advertised itself in the 1800s, whereas some advertisements depicted shoe blacking competition between two African-American shoe shiners. In this case, the men are portrayed in caricature, holding a brush, a canister of Mason’s Blacking and a boot, while they dance on a table. An AfricanAmerican man fiddler sits on a stool and plays. In the foreground, a white man holds an oversized boot; a white shoeshine boy, his pack on his back, stands behind an older man holding his arm as he points at his reflection in the

This jar was recently discovered in the suburban Philadelphia area, and it is painted with ancient style design, a type of production that was popular with some American potters after 1870, such as a small group that operated in and the around the Boston area. The base of the jar is impressed “Mason & Co. Phil.” There is also a letter “R” impressed on the base.

The manufacturer of this pot is not identified, but it may have been produced nearby at a company such as Galloway and Graff (later the Galloway Terra-Cotta Company) in Philadelphia. Not a lot is known about this company’s early production from about 1810, but the company is known in the later years of the 1800s, when Galloway won awards at the Philadelphia Exposition in 1876, the Chicago Exposition and the

“Of God And Country: American Art From The Jill And Sheldon Bonovitz Collection”

New Outsider Art Exhibition To Be On View At Philadelphia Museum Of Art

“Of God and Country: American Art From the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection” will run from May 19 to Jan. 1, 2024, in the Jane and Leonard Korman, Jaimie and David Field, and Marie and Joseph Field Galleries (152–155) at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This exhibition is devoted to works by artists who are typically labeled as “outsider artists,” often marginalized or excluded from traditional narratives of art history. Exploring their work within wider themes of religion and what it means to be American,

the exhibition looks at the nation’s landscape, beliefs, and fraught history with race and racism. At times critiquing and celebrating aspects of American life, the works reflect a deep engagement but profound ambivalence toward the present, as well as

Michener Art Museum Presents “Sarah Kaizar: Rare Air”

Art Exhibition By Philadelphia-Based Illustrator And Designer Now On View

The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., is pleased to present “Sarah Kaizar: Rare Air,” an exhibition featuring original gouache and ink artwork. The work comes from the book “Rare Air: Endangered Birds, Bats, Butterflies, and Bees,” an illustrated work about diminishing flighted species and citizen science, authored by Sarah Kaizar with writing by A. Scott Meiser, to be published by Mountaineer Books in September 2023.

The exhibition expands on the book’s stories and research with playful interactive installations. “Rare Air” connects audiences of all ages to the diversity of our ecosystems and the extraordinary creatures that populate them. Kaizar’s work enables audiences to recognize and appreciate the winged creatures that share our world. It offers strategies, big and small, to slow or reverse the threats that face them. Visitors will

discover, explore, play, and create while learning about urgent issues in wildlife conservation.

“I hope that my work with endangered species will slow people down and deepen their empathy for the world that we live in, even by just a shade or two. I think these individual portraits create small spaces for a personal connection around them. Showing them collectively starts to make it feel more powerful and forces you to stop and look at them,” shared Kaizar.

“There is a lot to discover in Kaizar’s meticulous, yet playful, drawings of the creatures that inhabit the air around us. Visitors will enjoy learning more about these endangered species and their fight for survival,” added chief curator Laura Turner Igoe.

About Sarah Kaizar

Kaizar’s work has been seen in regional galleries and museums including the Woodmere Art Museum, Delaware Contemporary, and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. She was a recipient of the 2021 Wind Fellowship by InLiquid and the Dina Wind Foundation and completed a residency at the Cedar Point Biological Station at the University of NebraskaLincoln in the summer of 2021. Kaizar is also the author of “HIKER TRASH: Notes, Sketches + Other Detritus on the Appalachian Trail,” an illustrated work based on her experience
