of American homes. We gobble down over two billion of them annually. (In case you’re keeping count, that’s about 300 cookies per person each year. Are you doing your part?) Cookie Containment No matter how quickly they disappeared, some type of convenient storage container for freshly-baked cookies was still called for. The first cookie jars were known as “biscuit barrels,” the moniker a holdover from the British term for cookies. (When next in London, remember: request a biscuit with your meal, and you’ll likely receive a piece of cookie-like shortbread, rather than the anticipated hard roll). The biscuit barrel (a glass jar, often pink or green, with a screwon metal lid), was primarily utilitarian; decoration was secondary. Metal variations were known as “biscuit tins,” and some thrifty housewives even made do with repurposed oatmeal boxes or coffee cans. In 1929, the Brush P o t t e r y Company of Zanesville, Ohio, changed all that. Brush introduced the first ceramic cookie jar. It was green and emblazoned with just one word: the self-explanatory Cookies. Other manufacturers quickly followed suit, and the biscuit barrel became a thing of the past. From the 1930s onward, cookie jars were expected to serve a dual purpose: to store cookies and to do so attractively! Over the years, although glass, metal, plastic, and even wooden cookie jars had their adherents, the ceramic cookie jar held sway. Ceramic proved the most versatile medium for decoration and shape. More importantly, ceramic cookie jars were nonporous, keeping their contents free from the absorption of

unwanted outside elements. As for those often ill-fitting ceramic lids? Well, in the days of fresh-baked cookies, it really didn’t matter much if a cookie jar was completely air-tight; the cookies never lasted long enough to go

tive ceramic cookie jars lasted from the late 1940s well into the 1970s. Prominent among manufacturers satisfying that hunger were McCoy and American Bisque. Other notable cookie jar creators: Shawnee, Hull, Hall,

minimally adorned with floral or leaf decoration, applied via paint or decal. Then, in response to buyer demand for variety, imagination took over, in the form of “shaped” jars. Since cookies appealed not only to children, but also to “former children” (i.e., everybody else), why not cookie jars celebrating childhood favorites? An entire storybookfull of nursery rhyme and fairy tale character jars ranged from “Red Riding Hood” and “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater,” to “The Wizard of Oz” and the (particularly apt) “Little Gingerbread Boy.” There were cookie jars based on silver screen and TV favorites, including “Pinocchio,” “Donald Duck,” and “Howdy Doody.” Generic whimsy found expression in such themes as playful kittens, frolicking clowns, winking owls, and grinning alarm clocks. Advertising icons such as “Elsie the Borden Cow” also found their way onto jars. And, since a cookie jar’s home was in the kitchen, there was an overabundance of food-based figurals. Among them: apples, strawberries, pumpkins, and watermelons, along with such unlikely cookie companions as tomatoes and green peppers. Any verbiage was simple and to the point: “Have A Cookie”; “Try Mom’s Cookies”; as well as the less accommodating, “Did You Ask First?” The California Cleminsons went a step further, with jars Shawnee’s “Jo Jo the Clown,” 8-1/2” h., $100-$125.

bearing such folksy mottos as “The Way to a Man’s Heart. . .” Some cookie jars did double-duty: American Bisque’s “Blackboard Girl” toted a functioning chalkboard, on which household necessities could be noted (for instance, cookie ingredients!). Nearly any theme could conceivably be re-imagined as a cookie jar. . . and was. (Continued on page 2)

also a characteristic of jailhouse carvers themselves. With a few exceptions, being a jailbird is not a celebrity status. One who emerged from anonymity was Patrick J. Culinane. In 1914 and 1915 while serving a sentence in a jail in Charlestown, Mass., he made a bar scene similar to those mentioned above but distinguished by being populated with monkeys - about 70 of them, according to an entry in “Henry’s Attic: Some Fascinating Gifts to Henry Ford and His Museum.” Scattered about the bar, the figures were indulging in the activities that Culinane believed to have led to his downfall and that of his fellow prisoners: drinking and gambling. According to the entry, when the manager of a local Ford factory visited the prison, Culinane asked that the diorama be sent as a gift to Henry Ford, whom he greatly admired. The admiration was mutual. Ford was so impressed he

The Early Owego Antique Center, at the corner of Lake and Main Streets in Owego, N.Y., will hold a fun and fact-filled “Spring Fling” on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18. The fun part begins on Friday evening, when everyone is invited to “Meet the Dealers.” Early Owego is a multi-dealer antique and collectible salesroom hosting over 80 dealers. Competent staff members are in charge daily, with the dealers coming and going as need be. But on Friday evening, May 17, all of the vendors have been invited to explain their areas of interest, talk a bit about pricing and valuation trends, answer questions and take note of customers’ wants. Each dealer has even been asked to offer a favorite hors d’oeuvre, beverage or snack. Adding to the fun and excitement will be a performance by The Royal Blues Big Band. Known locally and further afar, this select group of 17 dedicated musicians enjoys playing all types of music, from Glenn Miller to the Beatles. The band

includes four trumpets, a full complement of saxes, plus a trombone, French horn and baritone horn, with keyboards and percussion, all under the direction of Don VanScoy, conductor. The Royal Blues will perform without interruption from 6:30 until 8 p.m. On the mezzanine, dancing is invited. On Saturday, May 18, the Early Owego Lecture Series continues with a very special presentation by Dr. Christopher Wright on “The Earliest Forms of Photography with a Display of Period Cameras and Lenses.” Dr. Wright holds many degrees, including a Doctor of Divinity, and has had many occupations. Originally an academician, he tired of the 100 percent scholarly life and purchased a farmstead and went to homesteading. This was not that unusual, except that Dr. Wright, at 64, is the nation’s oldest living survivor of Morquio Syndrome, a rare connective tissue disease that is severely disabling. As his disease progressed, he was

forced to give up his beloved music and was led toward photography. Doing nothing halfway, he has single-handedly revived the chemical and physical processes of most of the known very early photographic techniques. He is a consultant to the Getty Museum’s “Project for the Preservation of the Traditional Chemical / Wet Darkroom,” the owner of “Visions in Silver Photography,” specializing in Large Format Fine Art black and white images, and the author of “Still Life-Still Living,” a collection of his photographs and essays describing development of spiritually-based aesthetics. Dr. Wright will offer his talk and presentation of equipment at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Antique Center. arranged for Culinane’s release and secured work for him at the Ford factory - making of him an honest man, husband and father of three. The diorama is housed at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., but in 1909 it was loaned to the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore for a special exhibition titled “The Marriage of Art, Science and Philosophy.” There, visitors could see the plaque mounted on its back: … “a token of appreciation and esteem for his many and benevolent acts toward…prisoners” and signed “By a Prisoner.” Culinane’s monkey bar is noteworthy for several reasons. It is one of the earliest of many monkey bar dioramas that followed. Invariably they showed figures engaged in one or more vices; and like them, some of its figures were made of peach pits. Renewed interest in monkey bars was spurred in 2006 by an episode on the nationally broadcast Antiques Roadshow, during which Marybeth Keane, an appraiser

from Connecticut, was asked to evaluate a monkey bar brought to her by a guest who said that, according to family history, it had been made by a convict at the New Hampshire Penitentiary in the 1920s. It had been in her family since the 1930s. Keane said she knew of about 20 made by one or more inmates in the penitentiary, sometimes populated with frogs, more often with monkeys, and often carved from peach pits. She evaluated it at $3,500 to $4,500. A local group that became interested in the appraisal was the Down Jersey Folklife Center at WheatonArts and Cultural Center in Millville in South Jersey (a region sometimes known as Down Jersey). It, too, had a monkey bar about the same size as the Antiques Roadshow specimen and also populated with figures carved from peach pits: one pit for the top half of the figure, the other pit for the bottom half. Peach-pit carving is a well-established folk craft that may have first been developed in China. It is still pursued in the South Jersey area, although most local

practitioners turn their peach pits into miniature baskets. The center’s monkey bar origins are unknown. The peach pit figures were regarded as evidence that it, too, was of jailhouse origin, if not New Hampshire. It was found in storage around the time the Folklife Center opened in 1995. It probably was later than the others, though before World War II, to judge from both its black-and-white checkered linoleum flooring and from the telephone booths and the floor-model radio that are included in the bar’s décor. It also intrigued a visitor to the Folklife Center in 2009, particularly when he heard about the $3,500 to $4,500 Roadshow appraisal. He confided that he owned a box that also was an example of jailhouse carving. He had gotten it from his father, he said. Coveted Campbell Soup Sign Fetches $60,000 Highlights Posted From Showtime Auction Services’ April Sale A C/B a la Spirite corset display with the original box, original etched and gold leaf on the front of the display case and even a mannequin inside (with a price tag of $1 affixed to the sample corset), sold for $17,100 at a threeday auction held April 12 to 14 by Showtime Auction Services at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Mich. The display measured 23.5 inches by 42 inches by 20 inches, and the mannequin was in very good original condition, except for some minor staining. The lot was typical of many other country store and general store displays that contained actual product, driving up their value and desirability as a collectible. Most of these displays had not been on the market for 30 to 40 years. T h e y came from the collection of the auction’s headlining

New York State Museum Acquires Rare Stoneware Acrobat Jug A four-gallon stoneware jug depicting acrobats, manufactured by Fulper Bros. in Flemington, N.J., during the 1880s, is now part of the New York State Museum’s Weitsman Collection of American Stoneware. Now on display at the State Museum, the historically significant piece of stoneware was recently acquired for the museum by stoneware collector and benefactor Adam Weitsman. The acrobat jug, a sought-after example of decorated American stoneware, has been breaking stoneware record prices at auction for decades, and Weitsman had wanted the piece for over thirty years. Weitsman recently purchased the jug from Allan Katz Americana. “This iconic piece of Americana now joins the nation’s most important collection of decorated American stoneware at the New York State Museum,” said State Museum Director Mark Schaming. “Through Adam Weitsman’s visionary acquisitions and generosity, this extraordinary, singular collection is now available for all New Yorkers to appreciate.” Abraham Fulper produced an assortment of earthenware, stoneware and tile products at

his Flemington pottery in the 1860s and 1870s. After his death, his sons continued the pottery, and during the 1880s the company became known as Fulper Bros. or Fulper Bros. & Co. Fulper Bros. stoneware often featured unique decorations. The acrobats on this jug may have been inspired by a traveling circus or performers at the nearby annual agricultural Flemington Fair. Stoneware was the plastic of the nineteenth century, used to create a variety of utilitarian vessels for the storage and processing of food and liquids. The potter, or in some cases a talented decorator who worked at the pottery, would enhance these utilitarian wares with artful designs that are today considered prime examples of American folk art. The acrobat jug is currently on exhibit at the New York State Museum, along with forty other pieces of the Weitsman stoneware collection, and the piece will be featured in a forthcoming book, “Art for the People: Decorated Stoneware from the Weitsman Collection” by John Scherer, Curator Emeritus of the State Museum. The book will illustrate some two hundred pieces of decorated stoneware that

have been donated to the State Museum by Adam Weitsman since 1996. The collection demonstrates how New York State was a leading manufacturer of stoneware throughout the nineteenth century. The State Museum is a program of the New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education. Located on Madison Avenue

Analyzing Ancient Coins

Chances are you may never have heard of Slavey Petrov, Giovanni Cavino, or Pirro Ligorio unless you’re a collector of ancient coins. These are three well-known coin counterfeiters in history, though they’re far from being the only ones. We tend to think of counterfeiters living in modern times, but Cavino

and Ligorio (with the help of scholar Alessandro Bassiano) crafted their copies back in the 16th century. Coin counterfeiting is considered to be among the first types of fakery. The earliest known counterfeited coins date all the way back to around 670 B.C., when coins were first created by King Gyges of Lydia. Once those ancient fraudsters realized they could make counterfeit coins simply by making a cast of an original and then minting their own, there was nothing to stop

Cavino’s contemporaries would have recognized the difference between his copies and the authentic coins they mimicked, thereby making him a gifted medalist. As t h e r e appear to be no records to settle this score, the truth may never be known. However, Cavino’s copies are now collectible antiquities in their own right and sell for hundreds of dollars each. The problem is that if his copies are misrepresented as rare originals, their cost is multiplied and a collector will still have been duped. Knowing the difference in weight between a Cavino copy and an original is the key to authenticity. Not all modern replicas of ancient coins were intentionally made to deceive; some were made as souvenirs, oth-

But if better-made pieces aren’t clearly marked as replicas or if the marks have been removed, fraudulent resellers may try to pass them off a s authent i c . Knowing w h a t material the original coin was made from is a good first step to authentication – some ancient coins were minted in precious metals, while others were made from bronze or had silver plating. An expert I know recognized a well-crafted fake immediately because it was made from the wrong metal for that issue; it even had carefully placed “remnants” of silver coloring in the crevices, but further examination proved it to be white metal rather than silver plating. In countries whose histories run back into antiquity, it’s common to find thriving

two problems with these scenarios: first, it’s illegal in most countries to sell authentic ancient coins; and second, there’s a 99 percent chance the coins at those ancient sites are reproductions that were planted there by the vendor earlier that day in anticipation of this opportunity. Depending on the method used to make reproduction or fantasy coins, look for one of these “tells”: a seam along the edge between the top and bottom; pitted surfaces; electroplated silver or gold coins with filler metal inside (the weight of these coins will be wrong); a re-engraved authentic coin that creates a rarer coin (this can be seen with magnification); and crystallization that is good but with corrosion that is a sign of false aging. Also check for seams that have less wear than surfaces, lettering of different sizes, and the style of portrait features (hair, eyes, nose), which

should match established examples. One area forgers sometimes overlook is the direction of the obverse and reverse images – the reverse should face in the correct direction as opposed to the obverse. Some reverse images are upside-down in relation to the obverse, others are in the same direction, and still others may be at an angle. Regardless of which it is, coins of one particular type should all be made the same way. A trustworthy catalog can help you here. In the world of ancient coins, it’s better to know the details of authentic coins through hands-on learning and networking with experts rather than solely trusting reference sources. Some wellrespected catalogs of fakes have actually mistakenly listed authentic coins as fakes, either because the information at that time was incomplete due to misinformation, or because the appraiser was simply mistaken. Using these references as general guides is fine, but learn all you can

from experts, experienced fellow collectors and trustworthy dealers about the intricacies of the ancient coins in which you plan to focus, then assess and appraise individual examples carefully. Just as important as owning good reference sources about authentic coins is owning books about forgers of ancient coins and their

wares – these will show you the minute differences between real coins and fakes or reproductions. By understanding how these forgeries were crafted, you’ll be even better able to keep your collection as pure as possible. All images via Wikipedia. At A Glance Signs of a Fake or
