upgrading,” said Haradin. Tom Sage, a ubiquitous figure who seems never to miss an important auction or show, started his business in Allentown, Pa., with $20 of seed money. In the mid-1970s he delved into banks in earnest with the purchase of a Kyser & Rex Merry-Go-Round purchased at a small estate auction in New Jersey. Sage retained the bank in his private collection, always considering it a favorite. Its next owner will be determined at the auction, where it will be offered with an $80,000$100,000 estimate. Sage’s Mikado bank, estimated at $120,000-$160,000, was acquired in the early 1990s at the storied John D. Meyers sale. “Mr. and Mrs. Meyers were old-time, firstgeneration bank collectors from Chicago. Their Mikado, which would become another of Tom’s prized possessions, is one of fewer than ten known to exist,” stated Haradin. Other great rarities in the Sage collection include a circa1907 J. & E. Collector Anecdotes And Antics Top Tips For Collecting And Investing In Vintage Toys And Action Figures By Shawn Surmick Thanks in part to a well-calculated strategy to revive some of the most beloved franchises in the history of pop culture, vintage toys and action figures have seen a wave of new interest from both collectors and investors. This is causing a lot of money to flow into the hobby of vintage toy collecting. Prices are on an upward trend and have been since the 2015 theatrical release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but you would be wrong to assume that just vintage “Star Wars toys are on the move. Almost all relevant pop culture franchises from the 1970s through the 1990s are being reworked and released. This trend is causing mass price movements in most vintage toy lines, but there are some words of caution to assist the would-be collector. I have listed my top tips below. 9. The trend is your friend until the end. The hottest segment of the vintage toy collecting market is by far the action figures and toy lines produced during the mid1970s through the mid-1990s. This is a far cry from 10 to 15 years ago when toy collectors were obsessed with vintage toy robots and tin space toys. Add in a total revamping of everything from “G.I. Joe and “Star Wars to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and
“Transformers, and it is easy to see why the big money is centered around the toys from this era and the generations that grew up with them. 8. Grading has become the norm. When grading company AFA (Action Figure Authority) first appeared on the scene in the early millennium, seasoned collectors were split on the idea. Today, few question it, and collectors like me praise it. Grading will never be perfect, but ask anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of a bad deal, and you’ll quickly understand why some of the biggest collecting fields cater to independent thirdparty grading. Besides, seeing the final product gleaming in acrylic is a great thing for the diehard toy collector. 7. If buying for investment, only go after near-mint examples. I cannot stress this enough. Even toys produced in the late 1970s were produced in the near millions. Carded vintage “Star Wars figures are not rare, they are simply in demand. Contrary to popular belief, there were a lot of speculators that bought and held a significant amount of vintage action figures from all toy lines. Some toy lines are harder to find factory sealed, but they are out there. Condition matters. Whether you buy loose items or factory sealed examples, go after near mint examples. I would not buy AFA-graded items in less than a strict “80 condi-
tion, with “85 preferred whenever possible. 6. Choose wisely. It is easy to get focused on a particular toy line. Ironically, diversification is your greatest ally. If you are buying vintage “Star Wars toys in high-grade condition, you are going to pay a lot for them because the demand is extremely high right now. As a result, it may be best to go after vintage “G.I. Joe action figures or even vintage “Masters of the Universe toys because neither toy line currently has any blockbuster movies in the public eye. That will change, as Hasbro will be launching a new “G.I. Joe movie in the coming years, and Mattel has no plans to let the incredible “Masters of the Universe franchise die a slow death. 5. If investing, avoid most modern toys. I am sorry to say, but today’s toys will never have the allure of yesterday’s classics. Most people fail to realize that when the original “Star Wars movies launched, they were in the movie theaters for almost a full year. This was before things like VHS and digital downloads. Kids of that era also didn’t have access to established electronic entertainment. Most of today’s toys are quickly released and end up in the bargain bin a few weeks later, quickly forgotten. This disposable business model is not good for the long-term collectability of most of these items,

kinds of buyers will always lose money in the end. 2. If investing, understand the time value of money. Some toy lines experience a brief resurgence in popularity before a well-calculated re-launch. The time to buy these items is when they are not in high demand. “Star Wars is the exception, as the value of high-grade vintage pieces should continue to grow over the coming years assuming they are well cared for. Tying up money in items that may never grow in value is par for the course if you choose to invest in the collectibles
trade, as it sometimes carries with it the dangerous consequences of lost opportunity. 1. Have fun, and buy what you love. If you don’t like “Star Wars, there is no reason to own vintage “Star Wars toys. Buy what you like, don’t overpay for it, and you will never go wrong.
Shawn Surmick has been an avid collector since the age of 12. He currently resides in his hometown of Boyertown, Pa., and is a passionate collector of antiques and collectibles. His articles focus on various topics affecting the marketplace.
Donegal Society To Hold Annual Meeting On June 9 Historian Jim Landis Will Give Lecture The Donegal Society, an organization dedicated to preserving the history of Lancaster County’s ScotsIrish settlers, is holding its annual meeting on Saturday morning, June 9, followed by a luncheon. The program will feature local historian Jim Landis, who will talk about the preRevolutionary War frontier in the area of what is now western Lancaster County,

with few exceptions. 4. Understand that vintage toys and action figures are fragile, graded or not. I recently wrote an article titled “Understanding the Risks when Buying Vintage Toys and Action Figures. Unlike a graded coin or comic book, vintage toys and action figures have multiple parts and pieces that can easily become dislodged or shift during something as simple as shipping or even storage. This requires the buyer to have a greater understanding of what they are buying and not just trust the grade on a certified toy’s label. Most early vintage “Star Wars toys and play sets were sealed with tape that dries out over time. This is wreacking havoc on a lot of mint and sealed examples. Ungraded examples are even worse because most lack the protection of an acrylic outer case. Know what you are buying, and do your homework. 3. Research, research, and more research before buying. The time to become a hardcore collector isn’t two weeks before a major toy auction. Review price trends, interact with other collectors, and, if possible, visit a vintage toy convention in person. Most mistakes are made by impatient and inexperienced collectors who just got a taste of the collecting bug or, worse yet, read on the internet that vintage toys are a great financial investment. Most of these

weavings that had an architectural and sculptural intention. Unlike those massive constructions woven with heavy fibers such as horsehair and coarse hand-spun wool, the Alchemies are more concerned with how surfaces, textures and finishes transform the space they occupy or contain. The pieces from this series hang in a vertical, gravitational way and separated from the wall, as if they were living in their own unique space. The effect, the atmospheres they create when hung together are similar to when you enter a Colonial church or the burial chambers of preColumbian cultures. “It has always been my desire to induce a ‌ state of silence in the places where I install my pieces,â€? stated de Amaral.

Fine And Decorative Arts Sale Scheduled For June 7 Alderfer Auctions of Hatfield, Pa., announces that “Alquimia XXXVIII by Olga de Amaral (b. 1932) will be among the highlights of its Fine and Decorative Arts Sale on Thursday, June 7. Acquired directly from the artist, this rare and important studio craft woven tapestry is expected to sell in excess of $50,000. Olga de Amaral (Columbia, born 1932) made the acrylicand-gold leaf on woven linen strips, “Alquimia XXXXVII, signed, dated, titled, and numbered on reverse, “Olga De Amaral, in 1987. After a trip to Ireland to participate in a World Craft Council conference in 1970, on her way back to Colombia, Olga passed by Lucie Rie’s studio while in London (she met the British ceramist at the conference). Rie inspired Olga to incorporate gold into tapestries. “That afternoon in London, I noticed a break in a ceramic vase. Lucy Rie explained to me that the breakage didn’t exist for her because she transformed the piece when she mended it with gold leaf, as do the Japanese when prized porcelain breaks. The concept touched me in some mysterious place of my mind, reflected the artist. The Alchemies Series, started in 1983/84 and ongoing, was the first series made entirely with gold leaf, which the artist considered, just as the alchemists did, as a symbol of knowledge. The pieces from this series are rectangular mini “canvases made out of cotton and prepared with white-washed gesso to be covered with acrylic paint and gold/silver leaf. After experimenting with the large scale, Olga de Amaral wanted to return to a human scale. The first 13 works in the series are based on the proportion of the human figure and inspired by the ancestral culture of Peru, its objects and science, especially mathematics. Also, when the artists visited the village of Barichara in northern Colombia, the architectural landscape of that town inspired the materials and colors used in the first pieces in the series too, clay-colored linen predominantly with white, gold and blue tones. Gold has played an important role both in various Native American cultures and in the Catholic religion. The artist realized that the application of gold made the weaving appear heavy and flexible, a quality she was looking for after the early large scale

Rembrandt van Rijn’s Jan Uytenbogaert, “Preacher of the Remonstrants, an etching and drypoint from 1635, sold for $57,500 to the trade.
Chagall’s color lithograph “L’Âme du Cirque,â€? 1980, which nearly doubled its high estimate to sell for $42,500, a record for the work. Also by Chagall, “Carmen,â€? 1967, an after-print in vibrant hues, r e a c h e d $62,500. The etching and drypoint portrait of Jan Uytenbogaert, “Preacher of the Remonstrants,â€? 1635, by Rembrandt van Rijn, previously in the collection of the German art director Rudolph Busch, nearly doubled its high estimate to sell for $57,500. A selection of early self portraits by the master was led by “Self Portrait in a Cap, Laughing,â€? 1630, and “Self Portrait in a Fur Cap: Bust,â€? 1630 ($27,500 and $35,000, respectively). Two elegant etchings by James A.M. Whistler performed well, led by “Rue de la Rochefoucault,â€? 1890, which was purchased by a collector for $30,000, a record for the work. Another highlight was “The Two Doorways,â€? 1879-80, an intimate vista of Venice, $25,000. Vice president and director of prints and drawings Todd Weyman noted, “Eighty-five percent of lots by Albrecht DĂźrer sold, showing resiliency in the Old Master prints market that Swann has come to dominate.â€? The visionary’s engraving “St. Eustace,â€? circa 1501, led the selection, selling for $37,500. For more information, visit www.swanngalleries.com. Images courtesy of Swann Auction Galleries.

the artist commemorated a significant milestone in her own life. Moses depicts herself at age 80 amidst the bustle of a working farm, about to embark on her first trip, by automobile, to New York City to see her own paintings on view at Galerie St. Etienne. “The Smithsonian American Art Museum is dedicated to telling the story of the American experience, and Grandma Moses is a key part of this story,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “The Kallirs’ generous gift allows the museum to share Grandma Moses’ unique style and subjects across the arc of her career for the benefit of the public who has long been fascinated by this American original.” Moses, born in 1860, captured a nation transitioning from the 19th to the 20th century. In the 1940s and especially in the 1950s, her style was viewed as quintessentially American and more accessible than postwar modern art. In 1953, she was featured on the cover of Time magazine, celebrated for her youthful spirit and the “old timey” style of her paintings and subject matter. While Moses’ art has
been on view at SAAM for a number of years, her work only became part of the collection in 2015 when Charles Nelson Brower donated the painting “Christmas” (1958). “Historically, women artists have too often been overlooked, and this issue is particularly acute among selftaught artists, whose work was often lost before it was ever appreciated,” said Leslie Umberger, SAAM’s curator of folk and self-taught art. “Moses was a notable exception; her work was appreciated and cared for, and she became both an American icon and a market success during her lifetime, a rarity on several levels. Both her story and her art are truly remarkable.” Jane Kallir, co-director of Galerie St. Etienne and the author of four books on Grandma Moses, has long stewarded the Moses research archive that Otto Kallir began compiling in 1940; she will serve as a consultant on the exhibition. “I am thrilled that the Smithsonian American Art Museum has affirmed its commitment to Grandma Moses, and I hope that the museum will become a magnet for Moses scholars, as well as for the many Americans who love her work,” said Kallir. The Smithsonian American Art Museum championed self-taught art as an embodiment of the democratic spirit since 1970, when it acquired and preserved James Hampton’s iconic “The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly.” It is one of the only major American museums to advocate for a diverse populist voice within the context of what is traditionally considered great art. The museum shows folk and selftaught art throughout the The Grandma Moses oil-on-canvas titled “Grandma Moses Goes to the Big museum and has had dedicatCity” is from 1946, Smithsonian American Art Museum, courtesy of Grandma ed gallery spaces for such Moses Properties Co., gift of the Kallir family in memory of Otto Kallir. work for more than 45 years; a new installation of these galleries, organized by Umberger, opened in 2016. “Between Worlds: The Art of Bill Traylor” opens at SAAM Sept. 28 and
The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) recently announced that it has acquired three masterworks by beloved American painter Anna Mary Robertson, “Grandma” Moses (1860-1961). The paintings are a gift of Jane Kallir and the Kallir family in memory of Otto Kallir, who first showed Moses’ work in his New York City Gallery, Galerie St. Etienne, in 1940, and who remained her steadfast supporter and collector. The three donations are the first of 10 major Moses paintings that the Kallir family has promised to give SAAM between now and 2026. A major traveling exhibition of Moses’ art is being planned at SAAM for the Fall of 2023 and will feature all 10 works. The three paintings, “Out for Christmas Trees” (1946), currently on view on the first floor; “Grandma Moses Goes to the Big City” (1946), on view in the Luce Center; and “Turkeys” (1958), are stellar examples of Moses’ colorful and lively style, which was inspired by her many decades as a farmwife. Capturing holidays and the spirit of the season, “Out for Christmas Trees” and “Turkeys” show rural life in full swing, while in “Grandma Moses Goes to the Big City,”

All Dolled Up: Flexible Fabric Dolls Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson Some dolls cry. Some say, “Mama.” Lots of them open and close their eyes. And diapered baby dolls often put those tiny diapers to practical use. Fabric dolls, with their flexible wire underpinnings, just bend. These dolls don’t really need to “do” anything. Just pose them and, when the mood strikes, change the poses. The dolls won’t mind. Their colorfully detailed costuming and whimsical expressions make them a unique visual accent, even in an otherwise doll-less modern décor. Fabric dolls have been around for ages, whether dolling up Egyptian tombs or being dragged around in the dust by those “Little House on the Prairie” girls. Early cloth dolls have a folk art look, as many were handmade. These were, of course, soft-bodied
Which looks better? This is a Roldan optician doll souvenir postcard from France, 1950s, est. $10-$15. dolls, with no interior support. Floppy and loveable, yes. Poseable, no. Although cloth-covered dolls with concealed wire armatures allowing posability had been available from the 1930s onward, their widespread popularity came as Spanish souvenir dolls. In the early 1950s, companies including Layna, Nistis, Roldan, and, most notably, Klumpe, released bendable fabric dolls that tourists snapped up. The dolls, most
This is a Klumpe “Señorita.” under a foot tall, initially offered humorous interpretations of standard Spanish clichés (bullfighters and flamenco dancers). Soon the roster expanded to include hundreds of varied characters. There were lighthearted caricatures of occupations (doctors, dentists, bellhops, ballerinas), activities (golfers, bagpipers, football players), and even the occasional snake charmer. To satisfy growing interest from consumers not fortunate enough to travel to Spain (or to receive a doll as a gift), U.S. importers, including Effanbee and John J. Schneider, brought bendable fabric dolls
stateside. According to a 1956 Schneider sales catalog, “The charming Klumpe Character Dolls are becoming more and more the ideal collection for both young and old!” Spain wasn’t the only country filling the doll carriages. Portugal produced the “Maria Helena” dolls, noted for their oversize feet, which helped them maintain freestanding balance. On the high end were Italy’s more realistic “Lenci” dolls, produced in Turin from 1919 until 1944. Exquisitely hand-stitched by Elena “Lenci” König, Lenci dolls are noted for their “sideways glance,” giving them a somewhat forlorn look. Author Dare Wright featured her own childhood Lenci doll, “Edith” in the best-selling photo book, “The Lonely Doll.” In the United States, designers quickly joined the fabric doll parade. Among the most popular domestic dollmakers: the “Four Sisters” of Independence, Missouri. All four Bullard sisters worked on these handmade dolls, although the best-selling of the quartet’s designs were created by Aileen Bullard Franklin. Her “Little Troll” elves and “Charles Dickens Character Dolls” first emerged in the 1950s and proved holiday perennials. The Four Sisters’

dollmaking tradition was continued by Aileen’s great-niece Hanna Mendus, until her passing in 2003. Also climbing aboard the holiday express: the Byers’ Choice “Carolers.” Their mouths always open in song, the limber, elongated Byers dolls are particularly wellsuited to wintry action poses. The first Byers’ Choice dolls were created by Joyce Byers in
the 1960s, their handcrafted stylings capturing the spirit of traditional Christmases. Unlike many mid-century dolls, flexible fabric dolls remain in remarkably good condition, despite the passage of years. The reason is simple: these were dolls to look at, not dolls to play with. The Met To Show Major Collection Of Edo Paintings Painting blossomed in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868), as artists daringly experimented with conventional styles. Novel approaches to pictorial art came to Japan from China or the West, and new schools or styles emerged when individual painters stepped outside the rules set forth by established painting academies. The exhibition, “The Poetry of Nature: Edo Paintings From the Fishbein-Bender Collection,” on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will trace the development of the major schools and movements of this fascinating era. Featured will be more than 40 outstanding examples of Edo-period hanging scroll paintings from the collection of Estelle P. Bender and her late husband, T. Richard Fishbein. Many of these paintings, mostly gifts and promised gifts to The Met, have not been displayed or published in the West. Inspired by the way the collectors enjoyed these works in their home, the exhibition will present the Edo-period paintings in juxtaposition with some 15 contemporary Japanese ceramics from the Fishbein-Bender collection. Unexpected pairings of paintings and decorative objects are also part of an age-old Japanese tradition called toriawase (connoisseurial arrangement). An additional 50 works in various formats and media from the Met collection will provide further context. Some of the lightsensitive works on paper and silk will be rotated partway
through the exhibition. The exhibition and catalogue are made possible by the BenderFishbein-Goodman Family. The celebration of the natural world will serve as a unifying theme, and the distinctive interaction of poetry and the pictorial arts that is fundamental to Japanese tradition will be a particular focus of the exhibition. “The Poetry of Nature” will shed new light on the ways in which Edo artists used verse to transform their paintings into a hybrid literary and visual art. All Japanese texts will be translated into English to assist visitors in appreciating the interrelationship between the written word and the painted image. The works from the Fishbein-Bender collection are primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries and represent important artists and every major school and artistic movement of the Edo period, including Kano, Rinpa, Nanga, Zen, Maruyama-Shijo, and Ukiyo-e. Though the FishbeinBender collection focuses on the schools that broke away from orthodox academies such as the Kano and Tosa schools, it does include a virtuoso painting of waxwings and cherry blossoms by Kiyohara Yukinobu, a highly skilled woman painter of her day who was trained by Kano masters. Rinpa, literally the “school of [Ogata Ko]rin,” referring to the great Kyoto painter of the early 18th century, is an area in which the Fishbein-Bender collection excels. Notable works include
the atmospheric “Moon and Kudzu Vine,” by Sakai Hoitsu, and “Frog on a Lotus Leaf,” by his top disciple, Suzuki Kiitsu. Nanga artists, who sought to revive the ideals of the literati culture of China within a Japanese environment, held ink paintings of expressive brushwork by Ike Taiga and his wife, Gyokuran, in high esteem. The poet-painter Yosa Buson is strongly represented by “Deer in Moonlight,” bought in honor of Mr. Fishbein’s 60th birthday, while the more energetically brushed “Herb Gatherers in the Mountains” was one of the collectors’ final acquisitions before Mr. Fishbein’s untimely death in 2014. Zen painting and calligraphy had never been a focus of their collecting interests, but they could not resist acquiring the magically powerful calligraphy with the oversize Chinese character for “Virtue,” by the monk Hakuin Ekaku. The Maruyama-Shijo school, famous for its marvelously naturalistic renderings of flora and fauna, is superbly represented by “Two Deer beneath Maple Trees” by the school’s founder, Maruyama Okyo. The final section of the exhibition contains imaginary portraits of women of the Yoshiwara demimonde, including a rare and beautifully preserved painting of a courtesan by Hishikawa Moronobu of the late 17th century. The Collectors Longtime residents of New York and supporters of the Met, Estelle P. Bender and her late husband, T. Richard

Fishbein, shared a love of art and travel, especially to Europe and Japan, since the time they met in the late 1970s. At first they collected in various areas, including ceramics and Japanese prints, but eventually focused on Edo-period paintings. Commenting about why they collected, they noted that they enjoyed the great diversity of Edo-period art as represented by different schools and lineages. At first they focused on works that manifested gestural and expressionistic qualities of the brushwork, the subtle gradations of ink, and the interplay of empty spaces and inked areas. They eventually broadened their focus and

Mr. Fishbein notes in his preface to the catalogue, “The works we
enjoyed most were understated and elegant, peaceful and soothing, reflecting Estelle’s taste and predilections.” A unifying thread of the diverse works in the collection is an Continued on page 18

The coins entered pop culture in the 1940s after novelist Raymond Chandler based one of his popular Philip Marlowe mysteries on the fictional theft of a Brasher doubloon in 1942. Chandler’s novel, “The High Window,” inspired a major motion picture called “The Brasher Doubloon” by 20th Century Fox in 1946. “We have had the honor of owning this amazing piece of history since 2014,” said Crum, “and take pride in knowing our firm will be forever etched into its provenance.” Monaco Rare Coins is headquartered in Newport Beach, Calif.

The first gold coin struck in the United States, the finest certified 1787 New York Brasher Doubloon, was recently sold for more than $5 million in a private treaty transaction involving Heritage Auctions, Monaco Rare Coins, and an anonymous West Coast collector. The more than $5 million deal sets one of the highest prices ever reported for an American coin. Terms of the transaction remain confidential by a non-disclosure agreement between buyer and seller, said Todd Imhof, executive vice president at Heritage, who brokered the coin on behalf of Heritage and the anonymous collector. “The Brasher doubloon is truly one of the greatest

The Morgan Acquires Rare Manuscript Illumination

Work Is By Dutch 15th-Century Artist The Master Of Catherine Of Cleves The Morgan Library and Museum recently announced the acquisition of an extremely rare manuscript leaf by the finest and most original illuminator of the Dutch Middle Ages, the Master of Catherine of Cleves. The work is from an otherwise lost “Book of Hours” and is the first to be discovered by the artist since 1980. The Master of Catherine of Cleves was active in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from around 1430 to 1460. He is named after his masterpiece, the “Hours of Catherine of Cleves,” which is part of the Morgan’s collections, and only 15 of his illuminated manuscripts survive. The newly discovered page contains the beginning of the “Seven Penitential Psalms,” written in Dutch, and the artist framed the text in an elaborate gold and foliate border. Figures depicted in the leaf include David playing the harp, two fighting birds, and an abbot praying to the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child. “This is an extraordinary addition to the collections of our Department of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts and testimony to the connoisseurship and eagle eye of department head Roger Wieck,” said Morgan director Colin B. Bailey. “The work of the Master of Catherine of Cleves is exceptionally scarce,

Dependent on the intricacy of their costuming and accessories, Klumpe (and unmarked Klumpe-like) dolls are generally less than $75; Byers’ Choice, less than $100. Four Sisters dolls, in particular the early elf-like “Trolls,” top out at $200. Priciest by far are the Lenci dolls; editions can reach $1,000 or more. Bendable fabric dolls are

We are delighted that we can share the leaf with the public almost as soon as it arrives at the Morgan, and we particularly winsome examples of mid-20th-century consumer-oriented design, capturing the irresistible innocence of an earlier time. David Schorsch-Eileen Smiles sold an impressive Charles Hoffman Almshouse painting (1877). “It was the first thing I sold,” stated Schorsch, who grew up near Philadelphia and has spent his life in the business. The dealer also sold a Chippendale blockand-shell carved chest of drawers from Connecticut, a Punch tobacconist figure, among other items. West Chester, Pa., dealer Skip Chalfant reported good sales.
