Western Bottles Soar At American Bottle Auctions Sale A Lacour’s Sarsapariphere Western bitters bottle, made circa 1866-75, the early variant number one and in a color that is highly desirable to collectors, and an E. G. Lyons & Co. Mfgrs. (San Francisco) very early Western bitters bottle, made circa 1868-71, in near-perfect condition, one of only a handful known, each sold for identical prices of $35,650. All prices quoted include a 15 percent buyer’s premium. They were the top lots in Auction #63, a two-part online and catalog auction held Feb. 10 to 18 and March 3 to 11 by American Bottle Auctions, based The E. G. Lyons & Co. Mfgrs. Madruga amassed his collection over a 50-year span, and his bitters include many of the top Western examples known. O’Neill’s collection had rare one-of-a-kinds. “The Lacour’s bottles went crazy, but so many bottles just went way above and beyond what we thought they’d do,” said Wichmann. “That same Lacour’s bottle five or ten years ago might have only brought half of what we sold it for. Western bottles are hot right now. Virtually all the best bottles sold for new record prices. Even Lacour’s bottles with some minor damage set records.” Wichmann said condition is still a major determinant in how well a bottle will perform at

auction. “Damage is really hurting some pieces, sometimes dramatically,” he said. “But in general, a good condition bottle will do very well.” The auction attracted 399 bidders, who posted a total of 162 winning bids. “It was a complete success by any measure,” continued Wichmann. The Lacour’s Sarsapariphere Western bitters bottle was able to set a record price mainly due to its color, which was unique and highly desirable to collectors. “The Lacour’s generally speaking really aren’t even that rare,” Wichmann said, “but they come in a bevy of colors, and anything but amber can bring big bucks. This one’s condition was exceptional, too, with just a tiny flaw.” The E. G. Lyons & Co. Western bitters bottle had a lot going for it, including a backwards “N” in the name, a highly desirable forest green color, scarcity (one of possibly less than ten known), condition (near perfect, filled with thousands of tiny bubbles and as crude as can be), and age (one of the earliest Western bitters made. “It was the best bottle in the sale,” according to Wichmann. Other Lacour’s bottles that did well included a Lacour’s Sarsapariphere Western bitters in a bright grass green color ($15,525); a Lacour’s Sarsapariphere Western bitters in a yellow green color ($24,150); and a Lacour’s Sarsapariphere Western bitters in a greenish amber color ($14,950). A Dr. Henley’s “Eye Opener” medicine bottle, made in 1873, changed hands for $20,125. The bottle was a magnet for collectors, as there are only four aqua variants known, with this being the only example with color – an

An Evaluation of Ceramics in America.” Over 17 years, “Ceramics in America,” published by the Chipstone Foundation, has featured dozens of major articles on 400 years of American ceramics history. Collector Anecdotes And Antics Speculation Nation: An Inside Look At The High Stakes World Of MTG Finance modern-era cards to be much riskier. The game’s creators have also massively increased the game’s print run, so the rarest cards printed today are anything but rare. Still, this hasn’t stopped the average speculator who can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on a graded and highly sought-after vintage card from trying their hand at the modern-era world of MTG Finance. Just log on to any of the many websites catering to this kind of speculation, and you are bound to get massive amounts of varying good and bad advice—from hoarding sealed product to simply buying up all low-priced cards in a set and hoping for a massive price increase as new play mechanics are discovered that increase demand. There is no shortage of advice, and an internet search of the terms “MTG finance will reveal just how large this secret world truly is. New expansion sets for “Magic are released several times a year. Large gaming stores that cater to the secondary market order thousands of booster boxes of the latest set and open them within hours of their release to ensure they have an ample supply of cards to sell to both players and speculators alike. Specialty created websites and YouTube channels

track the demand and price movement of each highly sought-after card. Due to the game’s complexity that ensures all previous sets can be played with one another, as new play mechanics are discovered, some previously “worthless cards end up spiking in price on the highly volatile secondary market. It is these price spikes that have served speculators who follow the game over the long-term very well. Sadly, due to the over printing and questionable management of the game at present time, Wizards of the Coast has come under heavy criticism

from fans and investors alike that they are only interested in short-term gains at the expense of the long-term value of the brand. Collectors holding sealed, unopened product based on recently released sets have the most to lose, as due to heavy print runs most sets are no longer in demand after being discontinued. This has created a wave of resentment toward the game’s creators and has also, interestingly enough, caused prices for vintage product to increase exponentially as investors look for more sound investments to tie up cash. As of this writing, “Magic

has appeared to enter a period of weakness not unlike what was encountered just ten years ago. These periods of weakness are actually good for the game as a whole as they allow both enthusiasts and the game’s creators to assess the longterm validity of the MTG market and see what has been working and what has not. Still, after almost 25 years of being on the market, “Magic: The Gathering is one collectible whose time has come. And, it’s time for serious auction houses and wellversed collectors to start noticing the potential of collectibles made in the 1990s.

When mathematician Richard Garfield created his fantasybased collectible card game known as “Magic: The Gathering (abbreviated as MTG or just “Magic) in 1993, few could have predicted just how much of a massive success it would become. Almost 25 years later, the game is still relevant and is now published by Wizards of the Coast, which is one of the most profitable divisions of the toy and gaming goliath known as Hasbro. Today, it is not uncommon to see vintage, out-of-print MTG cards selling for four to five figures. The game’s creators were good at printing just the right amount of sought-after cards and placing them in blind sealed booster packs to be discovered by eager enthusiasts and speculators. Since most of the game’s expansion sets have a limited print run that lasts anywhere from one to three years, a lot of these cards can increase and decrease in price based on how sought after they became on the highly volatile secondary market. This has caused some enthusiasts like myself to credit the game with creating just the perfect mix of collecting, gaming, and mass speculation. A robust and complex secondary marketplace almost as diverse as Wall Street has emerged. It’s a place where long-term investing is met with short-term speculation, and large amounts of money are won or lost almost daily. Ironically, the robust secondary market wasn’t always so robust. When “Magic first premiered in 1993, few could have predicted the massive success that would surround it. This caused the game’s initial creator to under-print a lot of today’s most highly soughtafter cards. Less than two years

after the game’s release, it was clear that something had to be done to ensure more product was readily available. The company made the disastrous decision to create an expansion set called “Chronicles that contained nothing but the reprinting of hard-to-find cards. This sent the fragile secondary market into a tailspin, and the game’s creator was stuck apologizing for the misstep. This single event led to the greatest and most controversial creation in the history of any collectible card game. Known as the reserved list, this highly publicized list contains hundreds of cards that the game’s creator has vowed to never print again. The company backed this pledge with a legal guarantee that is still in effect today. As a result, prices for some of the most highly coveted cards on the reserved list continue to rise each and every year. One such example, a sought-after “Black Lotus from the incredibly rare first edition of “Magic known as the Alpha series, graded and certified in near mint condition, has been confirmed as being sold for close to $50,000. Unfortunately for new investors, speculating in modern-era sets and cards is something of a crapshoot. Because the reserved list applies only to certain vintage cards, modernday releases can be subsequently reprinted at will. This has caused investing in

To Light A Fire: Spill Vases And Match Holders From Our Files By Andrew Richmond Man may have mastered fire millennia ago, but until fairly recently, historically speaking, fire and fire-tending have involved a great deal of equipment and attention. As with many things, we tend to take for granted providing light and heat, illuminating a page, heating up a meal, and achieving an accurate temperature to bake bread, but getting a fire started wasn’t always so easy. Especially after oil lamps

Of the type of colorful figural items produced by Staffordshire potter Charles Tittensor, this early 19th-century pearlware spill vase features a “brick” castle with towers. It sold for nearly $6,000 at Northeast Auctions in 2011.

and gas lights started to become more common in homes, offering a steady source of a small flame, household mantels began to be adorned by objects known as spill vases. “Spills” were twists of paper, longer than today’s kitchen matches, that were intended to burn long enough to transport flame from lamp to fireplace and to allow the lighter to reach far enough into the fireplace to light a fire. Spill vases, since they were typically intended for a home’s more public rooms and/or were in a position of display on a mantel, are typically very decorative, often some sort of ceramic form with paint decoration. The potteries in Staffordshire made thousands of them in just about every imaginable form, from courting couples to hunters, whippets to elephants. Spill vases should not be confused with match holders, which are smaller containers, often of a later manufacture, although often every bit as decorative as spill vases. Usually manufactured as small, individual or connected double containers, match holders, sometimes called

match safes, come in a variety of forms, from simple glass containers to figural ones in all sorts of shapes. Forms like boots or shoes were popular, but many are in animal or insect form such as flies, owls, or a donkey hauling baskets. Match holders are also occasionally found with several other small containers meant for use as a smoking set that is designed to hold cigarettes and other tobacco-related paraphernalia. Smoking sets, often manufactured by the same companies that sold desk sets,

can be elaborately decorated objects. Both spill vases and match holders occasionally utilize some natural design in order to create a design with multiple holders. From a collecting standpoint, spill vases and match

and high-end collectors, there are rare forms and decorations that can command thousands at auction. And because they are generally small, you can build a big collection without having to build an addition on your home!

SATURDAY, JUNE 3RD, 2017 FRACKVILLE, PA 17931

Located At The Schuylkill Mall, Directions: Interstate 81 & Route 61

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

You need matches to light a lamp, so why not simply integrate a match holder into a lamp base? Daniel C. Ripley did just that, designing a twofont lamp (often called a marriage lamp) with a central match holder. These rarely survive with the match holder covers. This lamp, lacking the cover, sold for $960 at Cowan’s Auctions.

This unusual flint enamel glaze spill vase in the form of a recumbent doe dates to the middle of the 19th century and was made by Lyman, Fenton & Co. of Bennington, Vt. It sold for $4,560 at Northeast Auctions in 2015. English potters produced abolitionthemed pottery in a variety of forms, often including this particular image of a slave in chains that was developed by Josiah Wedgwood’s factory in the late 1780s.A true rarity, this circa 1830 spill vase soared past it’s $400-$600 estimate to $4,230 at Neal Auctions in 2005.
