Horst Auctioneers To Sell Old Toy Soldier Auctions Will Host May 29 To 31 Sale Featuring The Mike Endres Collection Newly Discovered Weber Box Bidders are on their marks, and battle lines have been drawn for Old Toy Soldier Auctions’ (OTSA) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 29, 30, and 31, sale of military and civilian figures and sets. Over the three-day period, OTSA will offer more than 1,650 lots from several advanced collectors, including Mike Endres, whose collection is the centerpiece of the sale. The auction lineup is highlighted by “connoisseur pieces, primarily military figures and miniature military models, that were detailed to perfection by some of the great master painters of our time,” said OTSA owner Ray Haradin. Among the brands represented will be Stadden, Lasset, Courtenay, Courtenay Greenhill, and Greenwood & Ball, manufacturers of one of the sale’s featured pieces, a handpainted figure of Brigadier Sir Pratap Singh Bahadun in ceremonial attire, complete with Sikh turban, medals, and sheathed sword. A fine selection of Britains includes a rare circa1890 “Horse Race” toy, the only known example retaining its original factory box. Exhibiting beautiful original paint, the gyroscopic toy includes two competing horses in full stride, each mounted by a jockey in colorful “silks.” As the label on the box attests, “The Winner Is Positively Uncertain,” owing to a random-action feature that would have kept youngsters amused for hours. There are many other rare Britains waiting in the wings for their moment in the auction spotlight. Among them are an iconic circa-1902 set #72, “Life Guards Past and Present,” featuring saberwielding British Life Guards
and the brass hinges are Victorian-era replacements. There is also a small chip at the bottom of the right foot. The paint is original and in good condition. The box is attributed to Jonas Weber (1810-76), who worked in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pa., and made for Jonas Reiff (181078), who was a Mennonite farmer in Groffdale, West Earl Township, Lancaster County. The box has descended directly to the consignor. “It came from a local family. His name is still Reiff. They are a plain Mennonite family,” said Brent Horst. A rare three-dimensional painted figure of Disney favorite Minnie Mouse dressed in a red skirt with yellow polka dots with red shoes, yellow gloves and a jaunty green hat as accessories will be sold. Figures of her friends Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Clarabelle Cow will be up for bid as well. A broad variety of civilian figures will include many interesting pieces by Austrian manufacturer Wollner and premier German brand Heyde. The latter company also produced the boxed Spanish-American War battle set that is entered in the sale with its original box. Each figure in this particular set is well-crafted and fastidiously handpainted. Some of the men aim rifles or bayonets, while others hoist flags or hold a bugle. The set even comes with skillfully molded and painted lead trees and shrubbery. Two lots from the manufacturer Ping warrant special mention. They include a seldom-seen circa-1952 figure of King Edward I that was commissioned expressly for the world-famous Hamley’s toy store in London, and a superbly detailed figure of Sir Thomas Wyat, which is presented on a wood plinth with metal identification tag that notes the nobleman’s 1529-54 dates of birth and death. Novelty boxed sets will include two sizes of “Britains Zoo,” a Britains “Model Farm,” an Oak Apple railway set, Johillco’s “Farm” and “Railroad” sets; and a very

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics
On May 8, I took the day off from work and headed to t h e Philadelphia Convention Center for the annual Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Convention. This convention is considered one of the best comic book and pop culture conventions of the year, and Wizard World has been operating shows like this around the country for many years. Before I begin my overview of this year’s show, it is important to note that I personally don’t like a lot of conventions and related shows that other collectors enjoy. I find I can do much better by finding my own deals and doing business with a select few dealers and collectors that I have worked to build a solid relationship with over the years. My dealings in the comic book and toy-collecting fields are no different. As a result, I don’t normally go to many conventions and shows of this type so my review of this event should be taken in this context. It should also be known
lector looking to buy and not someone looking to get celebrity autographs or mingle with the up-and-coming cosplay crowd. If you are someone who is heavily into pop culture and enjoys dressing up as your favorite comic book character, your opinions may vary. I began my journey at home in Blandon, Pa. My plan was to simply drive to the convention, pay to park, and spend some time on the convention floor. I was looking forward to seeing several dealers whom I had only had a chance to work with via the Internet. I went online and bought my admission ticket the day of the convention, which was a major mistake. Without any kind of discount or coupon code, I was stuck paying the full price of admission for one day, which was a little over $50 with absolutely no extras. This was just for general admission to the show. Upon buying my ticket online, I left for the convention center, and after driving for almost two hours (thanks in part to heavy traffic), I arrived in center city Philadelphia. I must admit that the directions to the convention center were pretty easy to follow, even though I rarely
vention center, I had to locate a parking garage that still had available parking. Luckily I found one that had parking, but they charged by the hour. This meant if I spent just three hours at the convention, I would pay close to $30 just for parking alone. After parking, I arrived at the convention center and had to wait in an extremely long line to enter the show. Various individuals were dressed up in costume and many more were anxiously awaiting the arrival of noon, when the show was scheduled to open. Once the show opened, the line moved slowly and I got into the convention at about half past noon. Upon entering the show, one of my first thoughts was just how much pop culture influenced the show. Vintage video games, television shows, mass-produced posters, and the like had all become forefront while the overall influence of actual comic books was placed on the back burner, or so it seemed. As a high-grade collector of certified vintage comic books and toys, I was actually surprised at just how little material there was to purchase. Yes, there were

issues from the silver age of comics, but most dealers didn’t have a lot of the most common high-grade bronze age (1970s) and copper age (1980s) key issues in stock. This was actually cause for concern. As I spoke to several dealers I had a working relationship with, some said the same thing over and over: “I can sell high-grade certified books directly online, so there isn’t always a reason to take them to a convention to sell.” I was surprised to find only one “Incredible Hulk” 181 in CGC 9.2 (the first full

Estimated at $80,000-$120,000, the circa 1868 landscape was fresh to the market, having descended in the family of the artist to the consignor. A key member of the Hudson River School, Church traveled throughout the East in 1867 and 1868. While there, he visited the Lebanese town of Baalbek, known in Roman times as Heliopolis and notable for its extensive complex of temple structures. Church spent eight days exploring Baalbek and making drawings and studies. Baalbek has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to the landscape by Church, the sale offered a wide selection of American paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries, including fine examples of portraiture, Hudson River, western and regional landscapes, marine paintings and still lifes. and other merchandise. Overall, I found the lack of high-grade vintage material to be quite unsettling. Unfortunately, this appears to be a growing trend. Comic book conventions are slowly dying and being replaced with pop culture conventions at an alarming rate. While newcomers to the collecting hobby may be impressed with the mix of pop culture and comic books, as someone who grew up around hardcore collecting I find it greatly disappointing. While Wizard World is a great pop culture convention that any true fan is sure to love, it is truly disappointing for the older enthusiasts like me who were hoping to find a room full of comic book dealers ready and willing to cater to the hardcore collector. In an upcoming article I plan to explore how the slow death of actual conventions is affecting the trade. Until that time, thanks for reading!

wear marks weren’t natural even if the bottom had been in constant contact with any surface; they were concentrated in the centers of the marks almost exclusively. Some differences may be miniscule, so check makers’ marks carefully with known authentic marks, many American marks were photographed and published by J.B. Kerfoot. How certain pieces were made during specific time periods is extremely important to weeding out reproductions and fakes. For example, an item purported to be an early American porringer should not have thin walls or edges, nor should the edges be rolled; this would most likely be a reproduction. One tricky thing is that porringers from America’s early years were exact copies of British porringers, some even having crown handles. Porringers are generally not signed, which can make authentication problematic. Modern porringers not made to deceive are being mixed in with authentic 18th century pieces by unscrupulous sellers and sold at the same price, the unspoken insinuation being that they, too, are antique. Some of these have forms that were never used in the 18th century, such as footed pieces with two solid handles. They are sometimes represented as “rarities,” but an educated buyer will know they are contemporary. Old original English and European pewter molds are and have been used by con-
temporary forgers, and since the pewter pieces cast in them are identical to their antique counterparts, buyers need to examine marks and signs of false aging, as well as tiny spots of corrosion. It’s also important to know the feel of old pewter, which has its own unique type of roughness. Not many early American molds exist, and those that do are not thought to be outside museums and such, except for spoon molds. Many modern-made spoons cast from old molds are being sold as antiques, so special caution needs to be taken and every detail checked. And speaking of spoons, perhaps the most notable early American metalsmith was Paul Revere; seeing his rectangle-enclosed P. Revere mark would give any collector goosebumps. However, convincing reproductions of his spoons, not meant to deceive, have been made as souvenirs and for Revere family reunions. Some unscrupulous sellers have attempted to sell these as 18th century pieces, so caution and further examination of the spoon in question will either confirm or eliminate the piece’s authenticity. New pewter is being blackened with acid to simulate age. Sometimes the piece is buffed after blackening to more convincingly mimic an aged polished surface. Volume sellers will sometimes create new molds from authentic old pieces like plates or basins. If a seller has a lot of the same piece, check to see if they all have the same defects and scratches, that is a sure sign of a reproduction. No two authentic, used pieces will have exactly the same wear, damage, or casting defects. Pewter plate image via Wikipedia. Pitcher image property of author. At A Glance Signs of a counterfeit: 1. Pewter of the wrong color for its age or use 2. Unnatural fake wear 3. Incorrect font or design on makers’ marks 4. Combination pieces from two different sources 5. Early touchmarks on shapes of later eras 6. Multiple pieces with the same wear or defects 7. Sloppy soldering

First, know the mark of the pewterer you’re collecting, and know it well. The Bassett mark in question had three separate parts, one of which was an eagle; however, the style of the eagle wasn’t that of Bassett at all, it resembled the mark of another pewterer altogether. In addition, the font in “F. Bassett” was block style and completely different than that used by Bassett (a common forger’s mistake). In an attempt to age the piece and to obliterate a significant amount of the fake marks, leaving just enough to make buyers think it was Bassett, the fraudster rubbed and scratched the marks so portions were indistinguishable. However, the marks and fake wear were on a recessed surface that wouldn’t have come in contact with tabletops; therefore, wear would have been very minimal, if present at all, not severe like it was on this inkwell. Fooled By Fakes: Antique Pewter Growing up, I remember a family friend referring to pewter as “poor man’s silver.” I didn’t understand that at the time, but later on, I discovered that highly-polished pewter can resemble silver but was less expensive. I was surprised to learn that pewter had been used in the ancient cultures of Egypt, Rome, Greece, and China. Most of the antique pewter images I’d seen up to that point were from Colonial America and medieval England, although pewter’s Golden Age is considered to have been in the 17th century. Pewter is an alloy metal made mostly of tin and combined with hardening agents that include bismuth, antimony, lead and copper. The amount of certain agents, such as lead, can vary depending on whether the pewter is being made to look fine like silver. However, in the 18th century, British “pewterers” began using an alloy made of tin, copper and antimony, which was already being used in Continental Europe, which became known as Brittania Metal. The advantage of this alloy was that it could be mass produced, whereas pewter alloys containing lead were cast. Very early pewter pieces are hard to come by because many of them were melted down and molded into new pieces once the original pieces became outdated or were broken. There are lots of faked and forged antique pewter pieces, especially those represented as having historical significance. There are plenty of reproductions too, but those weren’t made to deceive and many times bear the mark of the contemporary maker. The problem arises only if someone tries to sell a reproduction as an original with a corresponding higher price. Sometimes you’ll come across a fake that started its life as a completely different object. Back in the late 1990s, a pewter inkwell was appraised on PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow,” with a mark that indicated it was an 18th-century piece made by Frederick Bassett, which would have put its value around $15,000. However, it was discovered that not only was the mark wrong, but the domed top was originally from a completely different object made in the early 19th century and redesigned as an inkwell lid. (Similarly, there are inexpensive objects with replaced bottoms that allow fraudsters to charge more, such as mugs and chalices. Those bottoms include original, desirable makers’ marks, and unscrupulous sellers try to sell them as originals. Look for signs of soldering, possibly sloppy, that would not be original to the piece.) The piece offered a lot of valuable clues that can be used when evaluating pewter authenticity. Knowing the amount of lead that would be used in particular types of pieces is extremely helpful. The more lead in the mix, the darker the pewter. In the case of the inkwell, its color was too bright silver and should have been darker; therefore, its dome may have originally been from a finer pewter piece used as tableware. The Bassett mark was also wrong, and although some of the problems with the mark were specific to Bassett, we can still take away some good lessons.

The iconic outfit worn by Vivian Leigh in her Academy Award-winning role as Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind” sold for $137,000 on April 18 at an Entertainment and Music Memorabilia Auction held by Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif. The dress took top lot honors in an auction of highlights of the James Tumblin collection of “Gone With the Wind” costumes, props, and behind-the-scene rarities collected over the past 40 years. The winning bidder of the outfit, which was comprised of a jacket and a matching full skirt with a black zig-zag appliqué, wished to remain anonymous. “The costumes from ‘Gone With the Wind’ are much more than icons of Hollywood history; they are icons of American history,” said Kathleen Guzman, managing director at Heritage Auctions, who auctioned the dress. “We are confident this collection is going to a wonderful home,” said Guzman. Tumblin, formerly in charge of the hair and makeup department at Universal Studios, began collecting rarities associated with the Academy Award-winning film in the early 1960s. He purchased the iconic outfit for $20 from the Western Costume Company as it was being prepared for the trash bin.

Pair Of Huanghuali Stools And Zitan Kang Table Ring The Register At $700K At Quinn & Farmer Two lots of antique Chinese furniture entered in Quinn & Farmer’s April 18 auction proved to be stellar investments for the consignor who purchased them at Christie’s in 1996, a time when the Asian secondary market was still developing in the West. A pair of important 17th/early 18th-century huanghuali cabriole-leg stools (fangdeng), two of only nine known examples, commanded
$448,400 against an estimate of $100,000-$150,000, while a zitan kang table (kangzhuo) was bid to $247,800. Prices quoted include an 18 percent buyer’s premium. Together, the two lots produced a handsome $696,200 payday (less fees) for the consignor, who had paid $120,250 for the items 19 years ago. The gross profit was $575,950. “The Chinese pieces were an extremely wise investment, and many eyes in the trade

were watching to see if that would be the case,” said Stephen Usry, vice president of Quinn & Farmer. “On the Monday morning following the sale, there were five phone calls from dealers asking about
the results. When I told one dealer what the pieces had sold for, he said, ‘Well done. You did a great job of [marketing] them…much to my chagrin,’” said Usry. Multiple in-house bidders
and four telephone bidders from China who were assisted by Mandarin-speaking students from the University of Virginia Chinese Students Society competed aggressively for the huanghuali stools. The final
two competitors were phone bidders. A different Chinese phone bidder paid $247,800 for the kang table, which had been estimated at $40,000-$60,000. (Continued on page 18)

The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum Will Celebrate Its 30th Anniversary In June The Art Museums Of Colonial Williamsburg Also Announce First Museums Board Williamsburg’s extensive collections had either never before been on public view or had been seen infrequently. During the 50th anniversary of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1976, the organization identified the creation of a decorative arts museum as a “very high priority” so that the public and scholars could see the collections not on display. DeWitt Wallace, the founder of Reader’s Digest, recognized the significance of such an endeavor. When he donated $14 million in gifts toward the construction of the museum (originally named the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery), he was the second-largest donor to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation after John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his family, who established the preservation project in 1926. Wallace, along with his wife, Lila Acheson Wallace, were frequent visitors to Colonial Williamsburg over nearly 50 years and told the foundation’s then chairman, Carlisle H. Humelsine, “Any person is a better citizen for having spent three or four days in this unique spot.” Guiding the Art Museums’ future will be its newly formed Museums Board. Leslie A. Miller of Bryn Mawr, Pa., is chair. She is an attorney in Philadelphia, where she also serves as an advisor to Mayor Michael Nutter and was the first woman to serve as general counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg that houses the renowned collection of British and American fine and decorative arts dating from 1600-1830, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in June 2015. Anniversary plans are still in formation. In addition, the Art Museums, which announced in November 2014 plans for the first largescale expansion and upgrade of the building that houses both the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum since its opening on June 10, 1985, are announcing the Colonial Williamsburg Art Museums Board, its first leadership board. “For 30 years the Dewitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum has offered the world excursions into the history and development of American decorative arts in all its disciplines,” said Mitchell Reiss, president & CEO of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “But this milestone isn’t about looking backwards. The Wallace Museum shares Colonial Williamsburg’s overarching mission to inspire, educate and entertain in a unique way. Just as our modern nation was built on the foundations laid in Williamsburg, the decorative arts created in the Colonial period continue to shape and inform our American aesthetic sensibilities to this day.” Before the Wallace Museum was built, many of the objects in Colonial

“Colonial Williamsburg is the only institution in the United States that vigorously collects the full range of early American fine and decorative arts, both Northern and Southern. It uses these remarkable materials in conjunction with its outstanding collection of British art and antiques to fashion cuttingedge exhibitions on 18th-century history and culture,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s vice president for collections, conservation and museums, and Carlisle H. Humelsine, chief curator. Designed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates, the museum presently features 15 galleries with 26,500 square-feet of exhibition space, a 260-seat auditorium, a museum store and a popular café. The proposed expansion of the Art Museums, to be designed by Samuel Anderson Architects, includes a new, more accessible entryway that will replace the existing entrance route through the reconstructed Public Hospital of 1773, which was the first building in North America dedicated to treatment of the mentally ill. Other improvements will include a 22 percent increase

replied, ‘Victoria Britannia! It’s coming home!’ He was elated,” said Usry. The 180-lot sale grossed $1.19 million. More than 80 percent of the goods sold were the property of a single consignor local to Charlottesville, Va., leading Matthew Quinn, vice president of parent company Quinn’s Auction Galleries, to comment, “We achieved our goal, which was to show people in the Charlottesville area and beyond that we’re capable of doing a bang-up job of marketing, then following through with top results.” “An event like our April 18th sale is exactly what the Quinn family and I envisioned when we first came to Charlottesville. We wanted to combine our forces and produce global sales that would identify Charlottesville as a world-class auction destination,” added Ken Farmer, president of Quinn & Farmer.
