Annual Spring Auction Will Take Place On June 2 And 3 Over time, fine toys become historical objects as they pass from one prestigious collection to the next. That concept will be strikingly apparent at Bertoia Auctions’ Annual Spring Auction on Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, which includes treasured toys from some of the greatest collections of all, including that of the late KB Toys co-founder Donald Kaufman. “Toys from the Donald Kaufman collection are now starting to reappear in our auctions. Collectors are ecstatic to have a second chance to buy the rare and beautiful toys they missed out on during the Kaufman auction series we hosted in 2009 and 2010,” said Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions. Recognized as the largest privately owned automotive toy collection of all time, the Kaufman collection totaled $12.1 million. Not only does Bertoia’s June auction include several prized pieces from the Kaufman collection, it also features the final 150 lots of pressed-steel and light This Kingsbury pressed-steel Huckster truck, 15 inches long, is estimated at $800-$1,000. pressed-steel vehicles from the Jay Schoedinger collection and part two of the Catherine Sue McKinney collection of antique teddy bears. A special attraction from across the Atlantic is the multigenerational Lorette This late-18th-century Lance (English) Queen Anne-type wooden doll, 21 inches, is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. family collection from Switzerland, which contains superb handpainted German tin toys, many extremely rare.
The Hubley boxed castiron racer with electric lights is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.
The Friday session will open with cast-iron automotive, including a few toys with Kaufman provenance, such as a Hubley boxed racer with electric lights and an all-original Hubley Friendship airplane. “It is unusual to see a Friendship plane in factory This Bradley & Hubbard figural castiron Huckleberry Finn doorstop is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. condition with original paint. Many that have appeared in the marketplace at one time or another were repaints,” noted Bertoia. Among the other star lots are a large-size Hubley Borden’s Milk truck, an extremely scarce Seto Bugatti racecar made by Scoglund & Olsen,
and one of three known examples of a Kilgore sedan with trunk. In the horsedrawn cast-iron subcategory, standouts include two Pratt & Letchworth productions - a fourseat brake and a hook and ladder wagon. Twenty-five lots of early American tin toys will cross the auction block, as well. Leading the parade is an elusive and always avidly pursued Suffragette patriotic toy. The mechanical and still bank selection is brimming with superior Continued on page 2

Norman Rockwell Study Sets World Record At Heritage “Study For Triple Self Portrait” Reaches An Unprecedented $1,332,500 Norman Rockwell’s “Study for Triple Self Portrait,” an oil study for the artist’s self-described 1960 Saturday Evening Post “masterpiece,” sold for $1,332,500, a new world record for an oil study by the artist on May 3, during Heritage Auctions’ American Art Auction in Dallas, Texas. The record-setting Rockwell led a $4.5 million auction of diverse American art pieces that realized a 96 percent sell-through rate by value and saw spirited bidding across all Heritage Auctions’ bidding platforms. Other top lots include Birger Sandzén’s powerful “Creek at Twilight.” Once relegated to a Milwaukee school’s storage room, the masterwork soared to $516,500, well above its pre-sale estimate. Net proceeds of the work will be set aside to fund college scholarships for Washington High School graduates. Thomas Moran’s visually stunning “Mountain Lion in Grand Canyon” (Lair of the Mountain Lion) fetched $612,500. “Today’s American Art auction was unbelievably exciting,” said Aviva Lehmann, director of American Art. “We exceeded the aggregate high estimate by over one million dollars. Setting a new auction record for a Rockwell study, combined with the number of active bidders for the Sandzén that

Steinlen’s Cat Tops Vintage Posters Sale
On March 16, Swann Galleries held a Vintage Posters Auction, featuring dynamic selections of graphic art from the end of the 19th century through the middle of the 20th century. The sale represented the myriad functions of the poster as a means of communication and advertising, with sections devoted to Soviet propaganda and also beachside vacations. The top lot of the sale was the iconic “Tournée du Chat Noir” by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen. The 1896 large-format poster was Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen’s “Tournée du This circa-1930s Karl Bub Horch coupe with purchased by a dealer Chat Noir,” 1896, sold for $30,000 to the trade. electric headlights is estimated at $5,500-$7,500. on the phone for Three Musicians on a Bench. games, whimsical candy con- $30,000, a record for the work. without text ($3,750 and Also from the Lorette col- tainers, dollhouses, and dolls, Art Nouveau pieces per- $1,188, respectively). lection comes a Gunthermann including several very pretty formed well overall, most The sale featured an enorclockwork Mutt & Jeff (ex. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Prestige Of Being Pennsylvania German
By Peter Seibert Several days ago, I received a note from a regular reader, Betty Gish, who was telling me of her Pennsylvania German ancestry in Southcentral Pennsylvania. As someone of Pennsylvania German heritage, it was the kind of letter that did my heart good. The pride that many of
us have in being part of our heritage came out in her letter as she described her ancestral home to me. As many of you know, those of us who claim Pennsylvania German (or as the tourists will call us Pennsylvania Dutch) ancestry can trace our roots back to those settlers who came from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Alsace region of France, etc. to America from the 1600s to 1848. They came for religious and economic reasons and settled most of Pennsylvania. Their German language dominated many communities. Lebanon city, for example, was a predominantly
German speaking community. Even today, there are street signs in Pennsylvania German dialect with English subtitles located in northern Lancaster County. So what does it mean to be Pennsylvania German in the 21st century? Well, it means eating pork and sauerkraut on lots of days other than New Year’s. It means enjoying every part of pig cooking except the squeal. It is about lots of sugar and mac and cheese and other good stuff. And yes, despite the humor, I love all of that stuff. It also means loving quilts and coverlets, houses that have two front doors, and
giving directions based upon geographic references that have not existed in decades (turn left at Miller’s store, which burned back in 1972). It is also about a pride in the history of the German community in Pennsylvania. Much of our language was lost as a result of anti-German sentiment around World War I. For example, Bismarck, Lebanon County, became Quentin, Lebanon County, named for the son of President Teddy Roosevelt. However, it still lives on in the Grundsau Lodges and the Fersommling. It lives on in our own expressions that still catch me now living in another
part of the country. Two wonderful books that speak to the prevalence of the Pennsylvania German culture are Henry Glassie’s epic “Pattern in the Material Folk Culture of the Eastern United States” and Mac Barrick’s “German American Folklore.” Both are books to hunt for and to own. They were written by two great scholars who are
good writers, and their publications are very readable. So, for those of you who are descended from Pennsylvania German stock, I encourage you this summer to take a visit to the cemeteries and farms that your ancestors owned. Take some photos and share them with children or cousins or others to remember your German heritage.

The 55th Philadelphia Antiques And Art Show Among The Finest Americana Showcased At Grande Dame Of Shows
This year’s loan exhibit curated by Jeff Bridgman, “What So Proudly We Hail,” American flags and patriotic textiles, was well-received by showgoers.
This year’s Philadelphia Antiques & Art Show was held April 20 to 23.
By Karl Pass In its 55th year, the esteemed Philadelphia Antiques and Art show was held April 21 to 23 on the Marine Parade Grounds at the Navy Yard. A special preview night was held on April 20. “It was a great party, and packed,” said co-manager and exhibiting dealer Diana Bittel
concerning preview night. “I think a lot of the dealers did well,” continued Bittel. Penn Medicine is known as HUP (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania). The Hospitals of the UPENN Penn Presbyterian are ranked number one in the state and among the top 10 in the nation. The Philadelphia show is a longstanding benefit
event for the organization. There were 59 exhibitors this year. DiSaia/Bittel (Diana Bittel and Karen and Ralph DiSaia) management ran the show. On the evening of April 21, at 8 p.m., the Antiques Dealers Association of America Inc. (ADA) presented the 2017 ADA Award of Merit to curator
Patricia Kane at the annual Award of Merit dinner. The award recognizes contributions made to the field of American decorative arts. “It was a really nice event for Pat Kane,” commented Bittel. This was the second year that the show was held in a
structured tent on the Navy Yard at South Broad Street and Intrepid Avenue. Easily accessible just off I-95, with plenty of free parking directly across the street, the return to the Navy Yard has proven to be a success. This year’s loan exhibit,
“What So Proudly We Hail,” consisted of American flags and patriotic textiles, curated by Jeff Bridgman. Bridgman wrote the show catalog essay and presented the lecture on April 23, “Spangled and Splendid: Discovering Art and Continued on page 19

Works By Picasso, Warhol, And Basquiat Sold At Woodshed Gallery Auction
Measuring 9.5-by-13 inches, this paint-and-ink-on-cardboard attributed to Jean-Michel Basquait, titled “Federal Reserve,” sold for $1,875.
An oil-on-canvas by Francisco Corzas (1936-83), titled “Two Figures,” signed and dated “1963,” sold for $9,375 to a collector in Mexico.
A portrait drawing in ink and colored pencil on paper attributed to Andy Warhol (1928-87), titled “Young Man,” sold for $2,500.
drawing (and a photograph of Godie affixed with a safety pin) inscribed on the reverse, “Value $150, figures the actress and artist Lee Godie, French impressionist.” It sold for $1,187. The other drawing was also a portrait drawing (no accompanying photo), on the back of which Godie also described herself as a “French impressionist.” It sold for $375. Godie was a self-taught artist and larger-than-life figure in the Chicago art scene from the 1960s to the ’90s. In 1991, Chicago’s Mayor Richard Daley proclaimed September “Lee Godie Exhibition Month.” Man Ray (1890-1976), an American-born artist (real name, Emmanuel Radnitzky), also spent time in Europe, mainly in France, where he became a major contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements. He was also a photographer. His ink drawing on tan paper with abstract watercolor underpainting, titled “Female Figure” (1951), went to a bidder in London for $6,688. The sale attracted bidders via LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com, and the website www.woodshedgallery auctions.com. Around 100 were active bidders. It was a spare auction, with just 97 lots. “I decided to keep this
This work on woven paper by Adolph Gottlieb (1903-74), untitled, signed in This autograph and drawing on a book pencil and dated “1967,” sold for page by the renowned artist Pablo $6,250. Picasso (1881-1973) sold for $1,500.
auction small, in order to focus on the bigger-name items,” said Wood. “Overall, I was very pleased with the prices and results.” Several drawings attributed to pop art icon Andy Warhol (1928-1987) came up for bid. One, a portrait drawing in ink and colored pencil on paper, titled “Young Man,” signed and unframed, commanded $2,500. Another, aptly titled “Two Campbells Soup Cans,” was a drawing on manila folder-weight paper. It made $1,875. Warhol (real name, Andrew Warhola) was from Pittsburgh, Pa. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), like Warhol, needs little introduction. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and co-founder of the Cubist movement. His autograph and drawing on a book page fetched $1,500. Picasso was born in Spain but spent most of his adult life in France. He was a painter, sculptor, poet, playwright and ceramicist. A paint and ink on cardboard work attributed to JeanMichel Basquiat (1960-88), titled “Federal Reserve,” signed front and back and consigned through a collection from an antique shop in New Orleans, finished at $1,875. The price would have been much higher had the provenance been stronger. Basquiat, who died from a drug overdose at age 27, is in great demand today. A gouache and ink on wove paper attributed to Adolph Gottlieb (1903-74), signed in pencil and dated “1967,” changed hands for $6,250. Gottlieb was one of the “first generation” of Abstract Expressionists and was accomplished as a painter,
draftsman, printmaker and sculptor. Today his artworks are in the collections of more than 140 major museums around the world. Rodolfo Morales (19252001) was a Mexican painter who incorporated elements of magic realism into his work. He’s best known for his brightly colored Surrealistic dream-like canvases and collages, often featuring Mexican women in village settings. His collage made from fabric and other materials in an artist-made tin frame, signed and titled “Mujer Corriente,” hit $2,250. The Woodshed Gallery is a

and his work is highly collected today, in part because he didn’t produce many artworks, having died at age 47. “The Corzas sold to a bidder in Mexico, and is an example of my big takeaway from this auction, the repatriation of artworks to their country of origin,” said Bruce Wood, owner of The Woodshed Gallery, based in Franklin, Mass. “I’m seeing it time and time again, serious collectors outside the United States with more cash to spend bringing fine artworks back home.” Wood also pointed to Lee Godie (1908-94), the celebrated Chicago artist who fancied herself a French impressionist. An oil-on-canvas painting by Mexican artist Francisco Corzas (1936-83) titled “Two Figures” sold for $9,375 to take top-lot honors in an onlineonly Master Artworks Discovery Auction held March 29 by The Woodshed Gallery. Corzas beat out brighter stars in the world of fine art – names like Picasso, Warhol, Man Ray, Adolph Gottlieb and Lee Godie. All prices include a 25 percent buyer’s premium. Corzas was born into a very poor family, but he managed to study art in both Mexico and Italy and actually began his career in Europe, where his work can still be found in many museums and private collections (including the Vatican). He split his time between Mexico and Europe,

Cordier’s Spring Firearms Sale Defies National Trends Despite reported decreases in national firearms sales, Cordier’s Spring Firearms and Miltiaria Auction saw high turnout and competitive prices across all categories of antique and modern guns. The auction was held on March 26 at the company’s Harrisburg, Pa., facility, with bidders competing from all over the world through live online platforms. The top performers were all semiautomatic machine guns, consigned by a private collector, including a TNW Model MG-34 ($4,400) and a BREN MK II ($3,900). Also included in that category were
a Keeter Creek DPM-28 semiauto ($2,800) and a TNW M1919 A4/A6 ($2,300). In military collectibles, a rare, soldier-identified World War II A-2 flight jacket and bomber shearling cap sparked heated competition, finally selling to an internet bidder for $2,300. The jacket belonged to Tech Sergeant Gunner James F. Byrd of the 305th bomb group “Can Do.” It was decorated across the front with a patch for the 422nd Bomb Squadron, as well as with three German crosses, each designating downed enemy aircraft. Military firearms were
highlighted by a Winchester M-1 Carbine ($1,100) and a Rockola M-1 Carbine ($950). A Springfield M1A rifle in 7.62 NATO brought $1,100, while two U.S. Springfield M-1 Garands sold for $1,200 and $1,100, respectively. A Romanian PSL Marksman rifle led the way in foreign military
long arms, selling for $1,100. Colts continued to produce strong sales results, with a Colt Python Revolver bringing $1,800, and a Colt Model 1908 hammerless pistol selling for $1,300. Also sold were a Colt SA Army 3rd Generation revolver for $1,200. A Colt 1849 pocket revolver ($1,100) and a
reproduction Colt Texas Patterson revolver in a display case ($1,000) also sold . Winchesters did well, represented by Winchester model 70 rifles in .250-3000, .257 Roberts, and .375 H&H Magnum that sold for $1,600, $1,400, and $1,100, respectively. A vintage model 1886 in .33
W.C.F. went for $1,300, while a model 94 Chief Crazy Horse Commemorative realized $700. The auction was the first of three Firearms and Militaria Auctions Cordier has scheduled in 2017. To learn more, readers may call 717-731-8662 or visit www.CordierAuction.com.

Outlaw Biker Gang Movies And Memorabilia Hell hath no fury in Hollywood like a biker gang scorned. The venerable outlaw motorcycle gang movie replete with wild, marauding bikers, ear-splitting road machines, rough-looking “mamas” and scared, milkdrinking “straights” - has been traversing the highways of Tinseltown since the early 1950s. Here are 10 great outlaw biker films and the colorful movie memorabilia they spawned. Fasten your seat belts for a bumpy, nostalgic ride down one of Hollywood’s more wild and interesting cinematic sub-genres. 1. “The Wild One” (1953). Based on the Frank Rooney short story “The Cyclists’ Raid” (Harper’s Magazine, January 1951), producer Stanley Kramer’s “The Wild One” is considered by many to be the original outlaw motorcycle gang movie. The film stars Hollywood’s quintessential rebel Marlon Brando as Johnny Strabler, leader of the hell-raising Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Lee Marvin co-stars as Chino, leader of the rival Beetles biker gang. The two hooligan entities converge in Wrightsville, Calif., where local police chief Harry
order. Directed by Laszlo Benedek, “The Wild One” is a big favorite with collectors. The film’s standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) is sure to get a collector’s engine racing, with one restored example in very good condition on linen selling at auction for $1,314.50. A half sheet poster (22-by-28 inches) in rolled very fine+ condition brought a top bid of $418.25. 2. “The Wild Angels” (1966). Peter Fonda of legendary “Easy Rider” (1969) fame has the lead role. The Heavenly Blues are a Hells Angels chapter operating out of Venice, Calif. and Fonda is their lead man. Also along for the wild ride are Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd, Buck Taylor, Michael J. Pollard, and a sprinkling of actual members of the real-life Hells Angels and Coffin Cheaters motorcycle clubs. Produced and directed by Roger Corman and released by budget-conscious American International Pictures (AIP), “The Wild Angels” remains a cult classic among biker film aficionados. The eight-card lobby set, originally displayed in movie theater lobbies to promote the picture, represents biker film art at its best. One complete set of 11-by-14-inch color cards in very fine condition sold at auction for $179.25. 3. “C.C. and Company” (1970). Directed by Seymour Robbie and released by AVCO Embassy Pictures, “C.C. and Company” stars fabled New York Jets quarterback and Super Bowl III hero “Broadway Joe” Namath as C.C. Ryder, an ex-grease monkey who tells his boss to shove it and joins the Heads motorcycle gang. The latter is led by big, brawny

The film’s climax takes place at a motocross where Namath and Smith lock horns, with pretty Ann-Margret as fashion writer Ann McCalley figuring prominently in their macho rivalry. “C.C. and Company” memorabilia is still quite affordable. The picture’s standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) is the big draw, promising a “Joe Namath - loving, brawling and bustin’ it up!” One example in folded fine/very fine condition brought a top bid of $40 at auction. 4. “The Born Losers” (1967). An important entry in biker film lore as this picture introduced Tom Laughlin as Billy Jack, an ex-Green Beret Vietnam vet who takes on the Born Losers motorcycle gang in a small California town. Jeremy Slate plays the gang’s leader Danny Carmody, with Elizabeth James and William Continued on page 18

Wellman Jr. (son of the great movie director) also on hand. Laughlin directed the film under the pseudonym “T.C. Frank” and later shot to stardom playing the title role in the 1971 sleeper hit “Billy Jack.” The standard one sheet poster is a real blast, featuring the blurb: “Kitten On Wheels With Her Bike…Her Boots and Bikini! Out for kicks…in for trouble! She’s going to join the…Born Losers.” One example in folded very fine- condition sold at auction for $107.55. 5. “The Glory Stompers” (1967). Dennis Hopper - Peter Fonda’s co-star in 1969’s “Easy Rider” - stars as Chino, the soulless leader of the Black Souls motorcycle gang in this low-budget entry from American International Pictures. Chino and his grubby clan leave rival Glory Stompers biker gang leader Darryl (Jody McCrea) for dead, kidnap his girlfriend Chris (Chris Noel) and hightail it to the Mexican border. In hot pursuit is the resurrected Darryl and ex-Glory Stompers member Smiley (Jock Mahoney). A favorite exploitation film of actor-director Quentin Tarantino, “The Glory Stompers” produced some wild movie promo material. The film’s insert poster (14-by36-inches) - promising “the Deadliest Cycle War ever to be waged!” - represents an outstanding piece of biker movie history. One example in rolled very fine condition brought a top bid of $30 at auction. 6. “Werewolves on Wheels” (1971). The unbeatable combination of horror and hell-raising converge in this offbeat biker film from Fanfare Corporation. Steve Oliver as Adam and D.J. Anderson as Helen head the cast, with Billy Gray (Bud Anderson on TV’s “Father Knows Best”) and singer Barry McGuire (“The Eve of Destruction”) also along for the ride into Hades. The biker gang of note in this flick is The Devil’s Advocates, who trash a monastery inhabited by devilworshipping monks, only to be hit with a curse later when one of their “mamas” is transformed into a werewolf. “Werewolves on Wheels” movie material commands excellent prices today. The film’s standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) executed by Joe Smith is hog wild, featuring outstanding, overthe-top graphics along with the blurb: “The Gang Thought It Was Tough…’til it found a new type of hell…The Bride of Satan!” One example in folded very fine condition roared to a top bid of $334.60. 7. “The Hard Ride” (1971). Vietnam vets and biker gangs often commingled in Hollywood biker films of the
1960s and ’70s. In this flick from American International Pictures, Robert Fuller plays newly-discharged Vietnam veteran Phil, who returns home from the war to fulfill a promise to a dying friend. He takes charge of his buddy’s beloved motorcycle “Baby,” meets up with said buddy’s girlfriend Sheryl (Sherry McBain) and runs afoul of a biker gang in the desert. The eight-card movie theater lobby set - dominated by the beautiful, saucy, red-headed Sherry McBain clad in all black - is a winner with collectors. One set in very fine+ condition sold at auction for $36. 8. “The Rebel Rousers” (1970). Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern and Harry Dean Stanton star in this low-budget biker film which these gentlemen have been collectively trying to forget ever since they filmed it in 1967. The boys are members of the Rebel Rousers, a biker gang on the loose in a small town in coastal California. Also on hand are Cameron Mitchell and Diane Ladd - the obligatory “straights” - who run afoul of the gang. “The Rebel Rousers,” released in 1970 in order to capitalize on Jack Nicholson’s Oscar-nominated performance as George Hanson in “Easy Rider” (1969) features some wild movie promotional material. The standard one sheet poster (27-by41-inches) incorporates elements of the old Confederate battle flag. One example in folded very fine condition brought $71.70 at auction. 9. “Hells Angels on Wheels” (1967). Released by U.S. Films Inc. and directed by Richard Rush, “Hells Angels on Wheels” stars Adam Rourke, Jack Nicholson and Sabrina Scharf. Nicholson plays the role of Poet, a bored gas station attendant who joins the Angels for kicks. Also appearing in the film is Ralph “Sonny” Barger, the real-life president at the time of the Oakland chapter of Hells Angels. The standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) - promising “The Shattering True Story of the Hells Angels of Northern California!” - is replete with biker themes and symbols. One example in restored fine/very fine condition on linen sold at auction for $155.35. 10. “The Mini-Skirt Mob” (1968). Yet another American International Pictures biker film but with a unique twist: the gang is all female. Diane McBain stars as Shayne, the leggy leader of a biker gang known as the Mini-Skirt Mob (actually it should be the Micro Mini-Skirt Mob given the length of their skirts). Instead of Harleys and Triumphs, the girls unleash hell on lightweight Hondas while kicking tail in wild go-go boots.

A lobby card set for “The Hard Ride” (1971) sold for $36. “Nothing is more vicious than a scorned, guilt-ridden blonde,” the movie trailer warns. The standard one sheet poster, which features the blurb “They Play Around with Murder Like They Play Around with Men! They’re hog straddling female animals on the prowl!” (whew!), pictures Diane McBain sprawled out on a motorcycle. One example in folded very fine condition zoomed to a top bid of $191.20 at auction. Other notable entries in the genre include “Motorcycle Gang” (1957), “Chrome and Hot Leather” (1971), “Nam’s Angels” (1970), “The Black Six” (1973), “Hells Angels ’69” (1969), “Naked Angels” (1969), “The Cycle Savages” (1969), “Hell’s Belles” (1969), “The Hellcats” (1968), “The Wild Rebels” (1967) and “Run, Angel, Run!” (1969).
