Pook & Pook Inc. Teams Up With Noel Barrett By Kary Pardy, Pook & Pook Inc.

FRIDAY JUNE 3, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 23

Premier Automobilia And Petroliana Sale Goes Into Overdrive

Pook & Pook Inc. Auctioneers and Appraisers is excited to announce a new collaboration with the jovial, mustachioed king of toy auctions, Noel Barrett. After over 40 years “playing” with antique toys, first as a dealer then, starting in 1988, as an auctioneer, Barrett is teaming up with Pook & Pook Inc., a premier east coast auction firm. Barrett and Pook & Pook Inc.’s founder, Ron Pook, expressed excitement about joining forces, a move that will benefit both companies, buyers, and sellers. The big question, however, is why these two

I’ve turned a hobby into a business,” said Barrett. Years of hunting and dealing helped Barrett build both a superior knowledge of his field and a loyal client base, things that made his eventual auction business a hot

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: 1-Adam-12 or Where Are The Antique Police? but reach out and help others. Sadly, what they owned was a late Victorian crazy quilt with a similar aesthetic. It would have been easy to shut down the hopeful owner with the comment that their quilts were a dime a dozen and worth a fraction of the album quilt. Instead, with each

person we spent time explaining the differences between the two AND then talking about the rich history of crazy quilts. Most folks were appreciative (a few held onto the belief that they owned the album quilt) and probably came to nurture and cherish their family treasure. So my parting thought is that even though we have a fantasy about the antiques police, the real task for all of us is to respectfully educate the public about our hobby. It’s the only way that it will survive.

was ticked off by the misattribution but folks this is way uncool. We do not need to publicly chastise others whose lack of knowledge does not match our own. My grandmother’s wisdom of not saying anything if you can’t say something nice is apropos here. More to the point, each of us, as collectors of antiques are secretly teachers at heart. We want to share our knowledge with others so instead of using the switch, be proactive and share your knowledge. Teach a course, write a blog,

This topic is always a favorite of mine and I have to confess that every collector that I have met wishes in his or her heart of hearts to have the antiques police out on patrol. What do I mean? On that same note, I have seen a trend over the years of people deciding to be antique vigilantes when it comes to this. Walking into a booth where a 1930s piece of furniture was described as being an original 17th century piece, I recall seeing someone who had scribbled on the dealer’s label the words “NOT HARDLY! Okay, so someone really

Unbeknownst to the collector is that the case is filled with fakes and reproductions priced just at that sweet spot that the unknowing will think they have found the buy of the century. This is when I fantasize about the sudden arrival of two policemen, looking faintly like Malloy and Reed from that classic TV show of our youth. They pull up and quietly reduce the price on the overpriced treasure or warn off the unsuspecting collector. But this scenario does not happen. It is upon all of us to learn as much as we can and share as much as we can, in a

spot for collectors. Personally involved in all aspects of the auction process, Barrett found success by applying his knowledge and continued enthusiasm towards one or two finely-curated auctions a year. “Success also might be a bit of an understatement. Noel Barrett hosted the five-million-dollar toy and train auction of the late Disney animator Ward Kimball. He has also handled five auctions dispersing the Toy Museum of Atlanta, the three sales of Bill and Lillian Gottschalk’s record setting toy automobilia and steam toy collection, and the collection of the Washington Dollhouse and Toy Museum. Barrett’s skills and personality were also recognized by the creators of the PBS television show, “Antiques Roadshow. He appeared on the American inaugural season and has been involved ever since, missing only three shows in over 20 years. “Antiques Roadshow was also one impetus for Barrett’s recent expansion after being approached by viewers and other admirers of his business, Barrett broadened his offerings to include categories such as vintage advertising, salesman’s samples, and unique models. Pook & Pook was founded by Ron and Debra Pook in 1984. Like Barrett, Ron and Deb started off as antique dealers and graduated to auctioneers in the 80s to accommodate the needs of their ever growing family. They soon became a record setting auction firm, offering some of the

finest antique furniture, fine art, and decorative accessories on the market. With a 97 percent selling rate and up to 20 annual auctions that repeatedly exceed the million dollar mark, Pook & Pook Inc. is also a leader in innovation. In 2013, the company joined with five other respected auction houses to create Bidsquare.com, an improved online auction platform, and have become a leading presence in the online auction trend. While Pook & Pook has had several successful toy auctions, including selling the contents from Merritt’s Museum of Childhood, a sale grossing over two million dollars, toys have been a smaller subset of the company’s decorative arts coverage. Ron Pook hoped to expand Pook & Pook Inc.’s scope to include more auctions of toys and related material. A collaboration with Noel Barret, whose decades of experience and reputation in the toy world are largely unmatched, would provide the backbone for such a move. Similarly, Barret felt his smaller auction house could benefit

White House Memorabilia Lead Waverly Rare Books Sale First-Edition Of “The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz” Will Also Be Among The Highlights The Rex Wayne Scouten collection of White House memorabilia, eight contemporary photographs by William Christenberry, and rare first-edition copies of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and Florence Nightingale’s “Notes on Nursing” will come up for bid at Waverly Rare Books’ Catalog Auction #269, slated for Thursday, June 9. The auction will be held at the firm’s Falls Church gallery in northern Virginia, with absentee and online bidding available through LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Around 400 lots of rare books, fine bindings, first editions, art and illustrations, historic and contemporary photographs and other ephemera will be offered. Start time is 6 p.m. ET. Rex Wayne Scouten (19242013) served 10 U.S. presidents, as White House chief usher from 1969 to 1986 and White House curator from 1986 to 1997. His collection includes signed gifts and material from Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon,

Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton. Items include signed photographs and documents from presidents and first ladies, original artwork, architectural fragments from White House renovations, and more. A star lot from the collection is a 1963 White House Christmas card, signed by President John F. Kennedy shortly before his assassination and inscribed by Mrs. Kennedy, who wrote: “Christmas 1963, With our deepest appreciation, Jacqueline Kennedy.” The card features a reproduction of an engraving, “The President’s House, From Washington.” It is expected to bring $3,000$5,000. Scouten’s retirement poster - signed by five consecutive presidents, from Ford to Clinton, plus six first ladies - carries a pre-sale estimate of $2,400-$4,000. Most of the signers wrote heartfelt and, in some cases, lengthy notes of tribute and thanks. As an accompanying letter attests, it took more than five months for the poster to circulate and

return with all of the presidents’ signatures. A color photo signed by five presidents and six first ladies, taken at the opening of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in 1991, is estimated at $2,400-$4,500. Greater York Antiques Show Begins New Format Longtime Biannual Show Now Runs On Saturday And Sunday By Karl Pass The Greater York Antiques Show was held April 30 and May 1. Bob Bockius of Mitchell Displays, along with his roster of dealers put together a great looking quality show. For the first time in its 48 years, the former “Burk” Show was held on a Saturday and Sunday, versus its typical Friday and Saturday format. Prior to being a Friday and Saturday show, it was a threeday event from Friday to Sunday. The other biannual antiques show on the York Fairgrounds, run by Melvin Arion, is held over three-days. When the Greater York show ran for three-days, a number of out-of-state dealers felt that lodging among other expenses could be decreased by doing away with the last day and management

listened. Many dealers are creatures of habit and slow to embrace change. This time, the opening day of Friday was eliminated for the sake of being a traditional weekend show. There was plenty of sentiment that getting rid of the Friday opening was a mistake and there were some regular opening day buyers who reported they could not make the trip due to the new format. “We plan to stay with the Saturday and Sunday format and see how it goes,” said manager and promoter Bockius. “We are looking for a new audience. A lot of people work ‘real’ jobs from Monday through Friday and we felt this was a good move.” Attendance was “okay” according to Bockius and numbers were right around average on day two, which was Sunday.

Dealer Greg Kramer took over the entire entryway annex by the food court, filling a massive space. Landis Valley Farm Museum had a space inside Memorial Hall advertising its current exhibition “Weathervanes: Three Centuries of a Pennsylvania Folk Art Tradition.” The exhibit and the farm museum are well worth the visit. To learn more, visit www.landisvalleymuseum.org. Of course, a lot has

changed in the antiques marketplace over the 48 year history of this primarily country Americana show. The nationwide reach has contracted a bit. Fewer customers are flying in for the show from such places as Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia. It has a mostly regional following from the Mid-Atlantic area. Bockius is two years away from the show’s 50th anniversary and it is something that will and should be recognized. “We are starting to gather ideas in how to celebrate,” said Bockius. It has been quite an

evolution for this long-standing show. Tastes change and many types of antiques have come in and out of favor - as with any market. Americana reached a fever pitch high during the country’s bicentennial in 1976. Pennypacker’s Auction Centre ruled the Pennsylvania market, record prices were paid, and demand was high. Special things came and went from the floor of the

famous “Burk” Show. In the ’80s, the market did mostly well. Collector Harrison Ford shopped the “Burk” Show in 1985 during the time that he was filming “Witness” in nearby Lancaster County. In the ’90s, pottery collector William Kelly Young of Texas would drive a trailer from Fort Worth to the “Burk” Show and often go home with it loaded (Crocker Farm sold the late ceramics collector’s collection in 2010). This current market in 2016 could sure Continued on page 14

J.M.W. Turner’s Quartet Of Whaling Paintings United For First Time

Estate Auction

Kass Detweller &the late Al Detweller, Boyertown et al.

Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 9:00 AM ET Preview: Tuesday & Wednesday 9:00-- 5:00PM and Day of Auction 8:00AM

Antiques, Collectibles, Furnishings, China, Pottery, Glassware, Sterling, Artwork, Jewelry, Toys, MIB Dolls including M. Alexander, Vintage Clothing and much more!

This is “Whalers” by Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775-1851) circa 1845, oil-on-canvas. Courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Collection, Wolfe Fund, 1896. Herman Melville’s epic novel “Moby-Dick,” published months before Turner’s death in 1851. It is not certain that Melville saw the paintings when he first visited London in 1849, but he was unquestionably aware of them. Aspects of Melville’s novel are strikingly evocative of Turner’s style. In addition to the four paintings that will be on view, a selection of related watercolors, prints, books, and wall quotes will also be displayed and will offer insight into Turner’s paintings and their possible relationship with Melville’s text. A whaling harpoon on loan from the South Street Seaport Museum and whale oil lamps from The Met’s collection will also be on view. This focus exhibition will allow viewers to engage

closely with the output of these two great 19th-century artists, and to assess for themselves whether the British painter inspired one of the crowning achievements of American literature. “Turner’s Whaling Pictures” is organized by Alison Hokanson, assistant curator, and Katharine Baetjer, curator, both of the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of European Paintings. The exhibition will be accompanied by a Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin titled “Turner’s Whaling Pictures” written by Alison Hokanson. It will be on sale in the museum’s book shop and online. The publication is made possible by the William S. Lieberman Fund.

“Turner’s Whaling Pictures,” on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art until Sunday, Aug. 7, will be the first exhibition to unite the series of four whaling scenes painted by the great British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) near the end of his career. The quartet of paintings - comprising The Met’s “Whalers” (ca. 1845) and its three companions from Tate Britain were among the last seascapes exhibited by Turner, for whom marine subjects were a creative mainstay. The topic of whaling resonated with some of Turner’s favorite themes: modern maritime labor, Britain’s global naval empire, human ambition and frailty, and the aweinspiring power of nature termed the “Sublime.” The exhibition is made possible by the William S. Lieberman Fund, the Janice H. Levin Fund, and the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust. Shown in pairs at the Royal Academy in London in 1845 and 1846, the whaling canvases confounded critics with their “tumultuous surges” of brushwork and color, which threatened to obscure the motif; yet the pictures earned admiration for the brilliance and vitality of their overall effects. “Turner’s Whaling Pictures” will offer a unique opportunity to consider the paintings as an ensemble and to contemplate their legacy, including their possible impact on

M.D.

CONESTOGA AUCTION CO.,

768 GRAYSTONE RD., MANHEIM,

PA 17545

MORRIS V. SHELANSKI IS A LIFELONG COLLECTOR OF FINE ARTS AND ANTIQUES. He was born to European immigrants and grew up in South Philadelphia during the Depression. Upon graduating from South Philadelphia High School he was awarded a scholarship to Harvard. While studying biochemistry there he took a humanities course in archeology and ancient civilizations where his passion for classical art was kindled. He went on to medical school, served in the Navy and went to work in Pharmaceutical R&D holding several important patents in the field. FROM THE 1950S THROUGH THE 1970S he acquired many fine objects in his weekend travels to antique shops on Pine Street and the surrounding Philadelphia suburbs. He bought with unbridled enthusiasm from classic cars to classical arts. He also bought in quantity. Prominent dealer Phil Bradley once remarked that while on a buying outing to Pine Street in the 1960s that he could not buy a single painting because Dr. Shelanski had already bought them all. THE MAJORITY OF THESE OBJECTS HAVE BEEN IN STORAGE FOR OVER 40 YEARS, many even longer, some having been packed away upon purchase. THIS AUCTION CONSISTS OF over 150 paintings from 16th to 20th centuries, over 50 prints and etchings from 17th to 19th centuries, large selection of antique and semi-antique Oriental Carpets, crib quilts, Arts and Crafts oak furniture, period and period style furniture, bronze sculptures, Orientalia, 18th & 19th century rhinoceros horn libation cups, woodenwares, Metalwares, etc.
