Petal The Elephant Is Coming To Burlington City Petal was a lifesized elephant statue that stood in the Burlington Center Mall for 30 years. Among the 100 stores and restaurants in the mall, Petal greeted shoppers and found family members with the expression, “meet me by the elephant in an hour.” As the economics of malls and the retail market changed, stores closed, and those retail spaces remained empty. In January of 2018, frozen pipes burst, damaging the fire alarm system, forcing officials to finally close the mall. Petal became the last inhabitant and orphaned. The mall’s owners, Moonbeam Capital Investments, offered to donate the fiberglass elephant to any organization free of charge, providing the new owners would move the oneton, 11-feet-high, and 8-feet-wide

statue. The New Jersey Arts Guild, a nonprofit organization in Burlington City, took on the project. On Feb. 3, 2019, during a snow storm, Petal was loaded on a flatbed truck and made a short trip to Chester, Pa., for restoration. The Rotary of Burlington financed the majority of this on behalf of the guild. The Arts Guild hopes that city officials will decide on a final location near or within Riverfront Park. Artist Zenos Frudakis has established a GoFundMe page for Petal’s restoration and move. For Emporium shoppers who wish to assist the Arts Guild specifically with this project, a donation jar for Petal will be on site during the month of June. Also, the Emporium’s seasonal display case for the month of June will be filled with elephants and other wildlife. The multi-dealer shop is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. It is located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J. Those seven flags were sent to the military museum at West Point in 1906 but, incredibly, were thrown out in the 1940s,” said Dan Morphy. “Clearly, this is a flag that belongs either at the Museum of African-American History, the Smithsonian, or some other important collection,” stated Morphy. “The flag was consigned to our auction by the GAR Civil War Museum, and in my opinion, it is very unlikely that it will ever appear for public sale again, surely not in

outshine the magnificence of a museum-quality Kastane, the national sword of Ceylon. The hilt is of characteristic dragon form, decorated in two colors of gold and silver, set with rubies and lavishly chased and decorated to a standard fit for a king. The exquisite gold scabbard is equally beautiful. Appearing to be of 18th-century origin, it likely resided in the Ceylon Royal Treasury until the commencement of British rule, at which point it may have been given to a member of the Morse family for services rendered; the Morse family motto and coat of arms appear on the chape. The sword’s line of provenance includes El Museo del Oro del Peru Miguel Mujica Gallo. The estimate will be $150,000-$250,000. Both artistically and historically significant, the Imperial Russian Napoleonic sword of Prince Ivan Ivanovich Odoevsky, a distinguished military officer who died in 1814 at the Battle of Brienne in France, weighs an astonishing 6 lbs. 1 oz. With solid gold ormolu embellishment on the hilt and scabbard, it bears a Cyrillic inscription with the Prince’s name and the presentation date of 1810. Measuring 41 inches overall, it comes to auction with a $50,000$100,000 estimate. Two Bowies stand out in a field of premium-quality knives backed with American lore. An I*XL Wostenholm caststeel Bowie knife, etched “Death To Abolition,” famous
in the collecting community for its association with the rare circa-1837 anti-slavery publication, “The Slave’s Friend,” is estimated at $30,000-$50,000. Another top prize depicted in multiple reference books is a gold and silver-mounted California dress Bowie made by Michael Price, circa 1856-89. This special knife is entered with a $70,000-$100,000 estimate. Additionally, a top-quality gold-wash Sheffield California knife made during the Gold Rush era (circa 1849-50) by G. Crookes measures over 12 inches long and displays ornate foliate scrollwork. Its estimate is $25,000-$35,000. Another chapter in the life and times of George A. Custer is filled in with a lot containing then-Lt. Col. Custer’s personal 1867-68 Indian Wars field map, annotated with campsites and other intriguing details. The group lot also includes cartesde-visite of Custer in his 7th Cavalry dress uniform and with wife, Elizabeth. The line of provenance goes back to Custer’s great-niece, Margaret Custer, and will be estimated at $20,000-$30,000. Morphy’s June 12 and 13 Edged Weapons, Armor and Militaria Auction will start at 9 a.m. Eastern Time each day. All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the Internet through Morphy Live. To learn more, call 877-968-8880 or email info@morphyauctions.com. All images courtesy of Morphy Auctions.

released solely in Japan. This also meant that U.S. gamers who still wanted to play games on their Sega Saturn systems would have to import games direct from Japan or concede that their Sega Saturn systems were pretty much obsolete due to how well Sony had launched their first entry in the video game wars. Unfortunately, importing Japanese video games was never a mainstream phenomenon. Even today, if you import Japanese games on current consoles you are considered to be one of the few hardcore enthusiasts. That said, a lot of the most popular Japanese releases for some of the systems released in the 1990s have gone on to become quite valuable on the secondary market. A copy of “Mega Man: The Wily Wars” is worth well over $600 today, but if you opt for a fake reproduction version instead, it can be had for less than $100. That said, there are plenty of sought-after Japanese import

more mainstream arcade-style games that rely on limited amounts of Japanese language and culture to play. By the early 1990s, it was not uncommon to see advertisements appearing in the backs of popular commercially successful home video game magazines like “Electronic Gaming Monthly” and “GamePro” that advertised Japanese import games for sale to gamers outside of Japan. I was one of the lucky gamers who took advantage of some of these offerings and remember ordering great games like “Mega Man: The Wily Wars” and “Golden Axe III” for the Sega Mega Drive system; which were two great games that never received an official North American release. Most of these games were sold at a higher cost than that of a standard U.S. release. I remember paying about $60 to $70 for each of these games plus shipping and having to wait about two to three weeks to receive them. By the time 1995 hit and the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation CD-based systems were launched in North America, numerous devices and hacks were created to allow the use of Japanese games on North American systems. Since the Sega Saturn was nearly crushed by the Sony Playstaion in the North American market, this meant that most of the best Sega Saturn games were being

video game consoles. This prevented a standard overseas Nintendo cartridge from being inserted into a North American console and vice versa. Sega did a similar thing with its Sega Genesis (known as the Mega Drive in Japan). This issue was easily solved with the development of cartridge adaptors that simply allowed Japanese video game cartridges to be inserted into them, which would then be inserted into the corresponding North American console so that the game would work as intended. The limitation of these devices was that they did not translate any of the Japanese language to English. They simply allowed the Japanese import game to be played on the corresponding North American console. The second setback to being able to successfully play Japanese games on North American consoles was that there was absolutely no way to translate any language within the game that was in Japanese to English. This meant that a lot of great and extremely text-involved role playing games would make little sense to be purchased by North American gamers if they did not know an extensive amount of the Japanese language and how to read it onscreen. There was no workaround to this issue and still isn’t to this very day. As a result, a lot of the most popular Japanese import games are

Back in the early to mid-1990s, the home video game market was entirely different than it is today. Most of the best games were developed and made by high-profile Japanese video game publishers. Most of these publishers would release their games in their home country of Japan first, and if they were deemed to be worthy of a Western release, the publisher would begin the tedious process of translating the game for American audiences. The home video game industry was much more decentralized and fragmented at this time versus today. For instance, today we have three main hardware companies battling it out for dominance in the home video game market: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. However, back in the 1990s there were multiple video game consoles on store shelves at any given time. If you walked into a video game store in 1993, here are just some of the video game consoles you could purchase: Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16 (discontinued in 1992 but still sold in 1993), SNK Neo Geo, 3DO, Atari Jaguar, and the Philips CD-I. In fact, the 1990s were considered the peak nostalgia time in the home video game
industry just due to the sheer number of technological advances achieved within this sole decade. That said, consumers had a lot of choices. Obviously looking back, the most popular video game systems purchased during the early 1990s were the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis. Both systems maintained a large following around the globe, and both were deemed successful in both their home countries of Japan as well as North America and other regions. As a result, multiple high-profile video game publishers developed games for both systems. Unfortunately, as a result of the high costs associated with translating some games from Japanese to English, along with acceptable cultural differences contained in some games, a lot of great games were never made available to regions outside of Japan. This presented a disappointing conundrum to most hardcore video game enthusiasts and an excellent business opportunity to distributors who had access to Japanese video game publishers, but not without some modest setbacks. The first setback to being able to present North American video game enthusiasts with access to games released solely in Japan was the fact that both Sega and Nintendo instituted strict region locks on their home

games that easily sell for anywhere between $200 and $3,000 per game. In an upcoming article I will list some of the most popular Japanese import games and what they are worth. In conclusion, Japanese import gaming is not as popular as it used to be, but it is making a comeback since Nintendo decided to not place a region lock on its popular Switch video game system. This means any overseas game will play on any Nintendo Switch system, making import gaming back en vogue with collectors and enthusiasts alike. Will any of these games be worth as much as their vintage counterparts? Most likely not, but some will. And like most facets of the antiques and collectibles trade, time will tell which ones were well worth holding onto to. Until next time.

are impressions made during his lifetime, a number of them from his major published sets, while others were produced for periodicals, thus encompassing different aspects of the American expatriate’s prolific activity as a printmaker. Works printed posthumously are also included. The Kosovsky promised gift comes a little over a century after Henry Clay Frick purchased more works (including paintings, etchings, and pastels) by the artist than by any other. Since Frick’s death in 1919, only one work by Whistler has been added to the collection, a lithograph after his portrait of Robert, the Count of Montesquiou. The Kosovsky gift significantly expands the institution’s Whistler holdings. In particular, it nearly triples the Frick’s works on paper by the artist, almost all from his Venice period, and places them in the context of his career as a whole, allowing many more aspects of the master’s virtuoso printmaking to be appreciated. “Whistler as Printmaker: Highlights from the Gertrude Kosovsky Collection” will remain on view through Sunday, Sept. 1. It is organized by Susan Grace Galassi, senior curator, and Margaret Iacono, associate research curator, and is accompanied by public programs. Gertrude Kosovsky began to collect prints in the 1960s, encouraged by her friend and
mentor, the expressionist painter Joseph Solman. Although her interests were wide-ranging, she focused mainly on Whistler. Over time, she and her husband gave 37 prints and one pastel by the artist to their son, who continues to add to the collection and has made this generous promised gift in her honor. “We are immensely grateful to Gertrude Kosovsky and her son for this outstanding collection, which will fit in seamlessly with the Frick’s holdings. The Frick Collection is pleased to announce a promised gift of 42 works on paper by James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), from the collection of Gertrude Kosovsky. An exhibition highlighting 15 prints and one pastel from the gift is currently on view in the museum’s Cabinet Gallery. The collection was formed over five decades by Mrs. Kosovsky, with the support of her husband, Dr. Harry Kosovsky, and includes 27 etchings, 14 lithographs, and one pastel, which range from Whistler’s early etchings dating from the late 1850s to lithographs of the late 1890s. LiveAuctioneers Partners With eBay To Bring Unique Fine Art, Antiques And Collectibles Inventory To Millions Of Buyers
Antiques & Auction News — June 7, 2019 - - 9
Stahl’s Pottery Festival Set For June 15 32nd Annual Event In Zionsville, Pa., Is Rain Or Shine
The new partnership will bring exceptional art, antiques, vintage collectibles and other high-quality goods from LiveAuctioneers sellers to the eBay platform for fixed-price sale. Image courtesy LiveAuctioneers. LiveAuctioneers and eBay have jointly announced a new partnership that will expand selling opportunities for auction houses in a way that is unprecedented in the art and collectibles market. The combined force of eBay’s incomparable presence in the online retail marketplace with LiveAuctioneers’ peerless technology and client database of more than 5,000 premier auction houses will form the infrastructure for a “Buy It Now” after-sale venue set to launch this spring. “With the goal of bringing art, antiques, jewelry and vintage collectibles inventory to the eBay platform, we’re excited to partner with a highly regarded industry leader in LiveAuctioneers,” said Katerina Frank, category manager of art and antiques at eBay. “LiveAuctioneers’ partners will benefit by having their coveted goods accessible by eBay’s large global customer base.” Auction houses that use LiveAuctioneers’ online livebidding platform will have the option of exposing auction inventory to eBay’s 179 million global active buyers. In return, eBay visitors will have access to a select inventory of fixedprice art and high-quality collectibles that previously would have been available only via the live-auction route, with anticipated prices ranging from $50 for a vintage toy to $200,000 for an original
Impressionist artwork. LiveAuctioneers sellers will gain access to powerful eBay marketing tools. While expanding their buyer base and go-to-market models, auction houses will experience a full range of e-commerce benefits designed to improve their sell-through rates and attract new consignors. “Auction house owners are first worried about supply, and then demand. Now, LiveAuctioneers partners will be able to offer their consignors unprecedented access to both the LiveAuctioneers and eBay audiences in a ‘Buy It Now’ format, no bidding required,” said LiveAuctioneers CEO Phil Michaelson. “Auctioneers will not have to invest any additional effort or resources to take advantage of LiveAuctioneers’ special relationship with eBay. Everything is fully integrated and organized so that unsold auction goods automatically list on eBay and are optimized for visibility. It’s a unique marketing tool that auction houses can use to secure supply and increase their sell-through rates.” LiveAuctioneers and its award-winning client services division will manage all bidder communications, payments and fulfillment on “Buy It Now” purchases, just as they do now for auction houses that use the LiveAuctioneers

The Parkers’ Colonial Stoneware Production In Charlestown, Massachusetts By Justin W. Thomas It can be argued that Isaac (1692-1742) and Grace Parker’s (1697-1754) red earthenware business in Charlestown, Mass., was the most successful pottery of this type in Colonial New England. The company was established around 1714, just after the couple married, and was in operation until the 1750s. Archaeological evidence has shown the family’s red earthenware was exported all over coastal New England, with artifacts recovered as far north as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, as far south as North Brantford, Conn., and possibly even North Carolina, and places in between such as Yarmouth, Maine, Berwick, Maine, Portsmouth, N.H., and all over the Boston area, Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. The Parkers and their 11 children were prominent in the Boston and Charlestown area. The family was well-to-do, living on Charlestown’s waterfront with servants, seasonal gardens, a dock and all the latest fashions. For example, Mrs. Parker’s inventory in the Massachusetts State Archives indicates the family owned popular imported ceramics for the period, such as Delft and fine China. The Parkers also owned a general store in the City Square neighborhood in Charlestown, where they sold their pottery and other goods. However, being the businessman that he was, Isaac appears to have been driven by opportunity and desired more success for his pottery company. He had apparently noticed the domestic stoneware that was imported by the shipload from European manufacturers (found throughout Colonial archaeological contexts in Boston and Charlestown) as well as wares possibly from some domestic stoneware potters, such as those employed in New York City, Philadelphia and perhaps even Virginia. Stoneware was manufactured at three primary locations on the East Coast during this period, but Boston was not among them. The Crolius and Remmey families had arrived from Germany and began to manufacture their ware in New York City as early as the 1720s. There was also a stoneware business operated by an Englishman of French Huguenot descent, Anthony Duche (d. 1762), who began to produce English and Germanstyle stoneware along with his three sons in Philadelphia around 1724. Another Englishman, John Rogers, owned a pottery in Yorktown, Va., around 1720, where he must have employed at least one English trained potter.
An 18th-century stoneware chamber pot handle was recovered by archeologists within a mid-18th century context on Wapping Street in Charlestown, Mass. The shape of the handle and the finger impression on the handle terminal is similar to the handles found on the pot that Watkins discovered. Image courtesy Boston Archaeology Department.
Nevertheless, Isaac Parker must have noticed the stoneware trade between merchants and consumers in the Boston area. He must have envisioned an opportunity to capitalize with his own brand. Massachusetts author Lura Woodside Watkins (1897-1982) researched the history of Parker’s business venture, which is largely documented in the Massachusetts State Archives. She later presented this story when “Early New England Potters and Their Wares” was published in 1950, and her analysis has been cited in other publications, thereafter. “In Isaac Parker’s day no stoneware had been manufactured in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Parker’s greatest difficulty was to learn the mystery of making the ware. For this purpose he took a trip to New York to investigate the potteries there, but the tradespeople were so wary he was unable to obtain the slightest information. As a last resort, he sent to Philadelphia for a man who had been trained there in the stoneware potter’s art. James Duche (1715-49), son of Anthony Duche, arrived with his family on the brigantine Mary in Boston on July 14, 1742. James Duche was perhaps skilled enough as a potter but was lacking in knowledge of the properties of New England clay. The stoneware makers of New York and Philadelphia never had any trouble because they had suitable clay nearby. Although Isaac Parker had heard of Martha’s Vineyard clay being used for this purpose, and fearing that the cost of transporting clay from New York or Philadelphia would eat up the greater part of any profit he might make, he decided to make a trial of the nearby material. In September 1742, Parker presented a petition to the General Court stating that he was endeavoring at great expense to find out the art of making stoneware and had employed a man to assist him. He explained why it would be an advantage for Massachusetts but said he was unable to provide the funds to do so. Therefore, he asked for a loan and the sole privilege of manufacturing the ware for whatever time the court should see fit. The petition was granted on Parker’s terms, and the loan was payable without interest on or before the last day of December 1746. Unfortunately, Isaac Parker unexpectedly died three weeks later. Now left with the burden of how to operate the family’s red earthenware business, but also support her family, Grace Parker decided to continue with the stoneware investment. Her brother-in-law, Thomas Symmes (1702-54), was a red earthenware potter and merchant in Charlestown and capable of operating a potter’s business. He was

Grace Parker combatted financial loss and misfortune during her years of ownership, but there were also reasons to celebrate. She was a trailblazer and a voice for women in the workplace in Colonial America. She was clearly a remarkable woman who believed in family business. She was evidently a leader in her community and within the local potter’s industry. Grace had a choice; she could have continued to

Following an exhibit in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1995, the media was ablaze with the announcement that a small, centuries-old beeswax figure of a man on horseback was authenticated by leading scholars as having been the work of none other than the master, Leonardo da Vinci. A single bronze figure was able to be meticulously cast from the ancient wax in 2012. Believed to be the model for what was to have been a monument honoring Leonardo’s patron Charles d’Amboise, the historic casting was titled simply “Horse and Rider.” The beautiful 28-cm. bronze, the only casting to emerge directly from Leonardo da Vinci’s ca. 1510 beeswax figure, along with the original mold made from the wax figure, will be sold by Guernsey’s at auction on Friday, Nov. 1. Location to be announced. This year marks the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death (May 2, 1519), with celebrations, events and exhibits around the world honoring the “Renaissance man’s” genius. It is so rare that a work by the Leonardo da Vinci becomes available that in 2017, a painting attributed to him fetched $450 million at auction, the highest amount ever paid for a single work of art at auction. Emerging from a Swiss vault in the 1980s, the wax “Horse and Rider” became the object of intense study by

Without a doubt, there is more to the story that may ever be known, and I imagine much of it revolves around the relationships formed within the Parker family.

Largest Ever Museum Show Of Classic Movie Posters Examples Range From Early 1900s To 1980s, With A Spotlight On The Golden Age Of Hollywood
“Dementia 13” (aka “The Haunted and the Hunted”) came out in 1963, this is an example from the release in Australia, measuring 13-by-30 inches.
“Cleopatra” was released in 1963; this is an example from the release in France, measuring 62-by-93 inches. The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Fla., is thrilled to present the largest ever museum exhibition of classic movie posters from one of the most prominent private collections in the world. Titled “Coming Soon: Film Posters From the Dwight M. Cleveland Collection,” the exhibition includes more than 200 posters representing comedies, musicals, westerns, sci-fi thrillers, dramas, and others that date from the turn of the 20th century to the late 1980s. “Coming Soon” will be on view from Friday, July 12, through Tuesday, Oct. 29. The exhibition is co-organized by guest curator Matthew Bird and Norton assistant curator J. Rachel Gustafson, who selected 215 posters, from the more than 3,000 held in the Cleveland collection, to present a comprehensive history of movie poster art and the longstanding allure of Hollywood these objects helped promote. The exhibition includes posters of iconic films such as “Casablanca,” “The Godfather,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “North by Northwest,” and “Grand Hotel,” as well as memorable cult classics such as “Barbarella” and “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.” “This exhibition is a
landmark event for the art form, which has not been granted the respect of a stand-alone show,” says Chicago-based collector Dwight Cleveland. “Film posters have always been mixed with costumes, scripts, props, and other ephemera in previous exhibitions about movies. Most film buffs think all the art is on the screen, but I believe the best posters can represent the soul of the movie itself and communicate volumes about the essence of the film.” Movie posters have a complex “job description.” They must grab the public’s attention, introduce a story, depict a foreign world, promote a celebrated cast, and ultimately fill theater seats. The subject of a full-length feature film has to be communicated in a single image, and movie poster artists had to become adept at simultaneously communicating glamour, aesthetics, and emotion in a very limited space. In spite of changing eras and technologies, today’s film posters do the same work the earliest ones took on, using ephemeral paper and ink to connect a film to its audience. The posters selected for “Coming Soon” illustrate the artistic techniques – pastel,

Movies also have been one of America’s most popular exports for at least a century. Therefore, “Coming Soon” includes posters from around the world that have interpreted American movies,
providing a window on how other cultures view the United States. Posters in the exhibition also come from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, posters advertising films that were produced abroad in countries such as Germany, Mexico, and Russia are exhibited in “Coming Soon” to illustrate the global reach and popularity of filmmaking. From the earliest silent films, through the Golden
Age of movie making, right up to our contemporary blockbusters, movie poster art tells the story of how the film industry developed, appealed to audiences, took on the challenges of an ever-changing entertainment landscape, and continues to enthrall us. “Coming Soon” not only celebrates one collector’s passion, but also provides a rare survey of an often overlooked art form that has become an important fixture in popular culture. About Guest Curator Matthew Bird Matthew Bird teaches design and design history at Rhode Island School of Design and works to bring designrelated content into art museums and present design to new audiences. Secreted there in the 14th century and discovered in 1863, the Colmar Treasure, now in the collection of the Musée de Cluny, Paris, comprises rings of sapphire, ruby, garnet, and turquoise; jeweled and fanciful brooches; a delicate enameled belt; gilded buttons; and more than 300 coins. Giorgione’s startling allegory, “La Vecchia” (known as “The Old Woman”), will be on view at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art until Sunday, Aug. 4. Despite the mystery of his biography and the few paintings that can be attributed to him, Giorgione (ca. 1474/6-1510) is considered one of the greatest artists of the Venetian Renaissance. With this empathetic painting of an old woman, Giorgione created a portrayal of aging and a reminder of human vanity and the fleeting nature of life. The Wadsworth presents this singular work in conjunction with the Cincinnati Art Museum, due to the initiative of the Foundation for Italian Art and Culture (FIAC), which has facilitated its loan from the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy. “La Vecchia is Giorgione’s poetic response to the natural phenomenon of aging,” stated Oliver Tostmann, Susan Morse Hilles curator of European Art of the Wadsworth. “It is a milestone in European portraiture in which Giorgione shows old age with implacable explicitness. It prompts us to confront our own mortality and the inevitable truth of growing old.” The hyperrealistic portrayal of a haggard woman looking directly at us both attracts and repels at the same time. With her lips open as if about to speak, she gestures to herself. In her hand is a slip of paper inscribed with the words, “col tempo,” “with time.” Painted more than 500 years ago, the unsparing naturalism and representation of the effects of aging are unexpected, a striking departure from the more familiar, idealized portraits of the time. A recent conservation treatment, funded by FIAC, has removed discoloration and breathed new life into “La Vecchia.” Venice around 1500 was a center of cultural and artistic activity where private patronage of the arts thrived. Giorgione was an innovator, introducing new subjects including mythological scenes and sensitive portraits. He is considered one of the leading Venetian painters during the Renaissance, yet he remains one of the most enigmatic. Little is known about Giorgione’s life. Born in Castelfranco, he came to fame during the early 16th century and died in his early 30s. After experiencing Giorgione’s “La Vecchia,” visitors will be invited to view the Wadsworth’s collection of Italian works of art, including important Venetian Renaissance paintings by artists such as Sebastiano del Piombo, Tintoretto, and Jacopo Bassano. A group of deluxe books designed for and published by the famed Aldus Manutius, Venice’s leading purveyor of ancient and modern texts, known for their elegant design, are on view adjacent the Giorgione, as is the museum’s Andrea Previtali, “Madonna and Child with a Donor in a landscape” (ca. 1504-05). “Rarely do we have such a prime opportunity to reconnect with our shared humanity and with the Renaissance,” said Thomas J. Loughman, director and CEO of the
