Uncut Sheet Of “Magic: The Gathering/ Pokémon” Cards Brings Record $375,000

A “Pokémon” Charmander unnumbered promo 64 Mario Stadium best photo contest (CGC Trading Card Game Mint 9), 1999, featuring an image by Tsukasa Hosono, brought $75,000.

This “Magic: The Gathering” Black Lotus limited edition (Alpha) (BGS Trading Card Game EX-MT 6) from Wizards of the Coast, 1993, sold for $50,000. The card from the Alpha Edition is part of the most powerful group of cards in the entire game, known as the Power Nine. BGS has certified 10 copies earning an EX-MT 6 grade with 250 graded higher.

A “Magic: The Gathering/Pokémon” test print uncut sheet with notes (Wizards of the Coast) that was part of the sales pitch to extend the “Pokémon” game’s reach from Japan into the Western world sold for $375,000 to lead Heritage’s May 17 and 18 Trading Card Games Signature Auction to a total gross of $1,747,323.

The final price, reached after 34 bids poured in, established a new world record for an uncut sheet of cards from a trading card game.

The auction’s top lot is hugely significant in trading card games history because it not only helped the growth of the “Pokémon” game, but also features cards from the two most popular trading card games in the world, “Pokémon” and “Magic: The Gathering.” Uncut sheets from either game are coveted by collectors, but to have both games on the same sheet is incredibly rare. In addition, it is the only sheet known that represents a “Pokémon” ” card with a black border.

A “Magic: The Gathering/Pokémon” test print uncut sheet with notes (Wizards of the Coast), which was part of the sales pitch to extend the “Pokémon” game’s reach from Japan to the West sold for $375,000.

“This record price is fitting for such an important piece of trading card game history,” said Jesus Garcia, consignment director of Trading Card Games at Heritage Auctions. “It smashed the previous mark of $250,000 that was paid at Heritage last year for a “Pokémon” unlimited base set test print uncut sheet. “The market for trading card games remains remarkably strong, and the results in this auction reflected that,” continued Garcia.

A “Pokémon” first edition base set sealed booster box also was in high demand, pulling in 24 bids before closing at $237,500. Released in January 1999, the set included 102 cards, including the popular Charizard. Because of the low print run, booster sets like this one that are scarce and rarely reach the open market. A “Pokémon”

Charmander unnumbered promo 64 Mario Stadium best photo contest (CGC Trading Card Game Mint 9) from 1999, featuring an image by Tsukasa Hosono, brought in a winning bid of $75,000. Contestants competed to take the best photos they could for the N64 classic, titled “Pokémon Snap,” with the top five photos printed on reprint cards from the Japanese “Pokémon” TCG expansion pack.

Another card featuring an image from a “Pokémon” tournament, a “Pokémon” Squirtle unnumbered promo 64 Mario Stadium best photo contest (CGC Trading Card Game Mint 9) from 1999, ended at $68,750. The same amount was paid for a “Magic: The Gathering” limited edition (Alpha) sealed starter deck that was the first set released for the game.

One of the most popular cards from any game, a “Magic: The Gathering” Black Lotus limited edition (Alpha) (BGS Trading Card Game EX-MT 6) (Wizards of the Coast, 1993) realized $50,000. The most sought-after trading card in existence, this card from the Alpha Edition is part of the most powerful group of cards in the entire game, known as the Power Nine. BGS has certified 10 copies earning an EX-MT 6 grade with 250 graded higher. Other highlights were a “Magic: The Gathering” Legends edition sealed booster box selling for $30,000. Soulis’ Spring Art Auction Will Have Bidders Dreaming In

Both Black-And-White And Color

Important American Art Photography Collection To Be Sold June 6 And 7

Midwest auction houses can be a little like America itself when it comes to their fine art offerings. A melting pot of sorts, they often combine material from consignors on both coasts, and blend it all with works by Midwest regionalists. That’s certainly the case with Soulis Auctions and their 26th Annual Spring Art Auction roster.

The two-day event to be

held on Thursday and Friday, June 6 and 7, blossoms first in black-and-white with an outstanding collection of American art photography, fresh from a Fort Collins, Co., collection. The highlights include shots from out west by the master Ansel Adams (1902‚ ‘84). Two images, “Mount Williamson, Sierra Nevada” and “Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite,” printed ca. 1950 and 1960, respectively,

though the images were shot much earlier, carry estimates of $20,000-$30,000 and $40,000-$60,000. This collection has outstanding provenance, including two images owned by iconic American fashion and

due to a paperwork issue. The prodigal bronze, signed and numbered one of six, returned with a certificate of authentication from the President of the Dina Vierny Foundation. It will be estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

portrait photographer Richard Avedon.

The auction lineup goes from grayscale to the striking black and white lithographs of Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975). There will be 15 prints headlined by the scarce triumvirate of large format, low edition lithographs from the 1930s titled “Jesse James,” estimated at $10,000-$15,000, “Huck Finn” (est. $8000-$12,000) and “Frankie and Johnnie” (est. $8,000-$12,000). Each image was inspired by Missouri lore, whether literature or oral tradition, sometimes shared in the form of folk songs, a concept Benton appreciated and drew upon frequently.

gold. Anything with the state flower brings a premium, and a Randy Payton (B. 1958) oil-on-canvas paved in bluebonnets is sure to please at $3,000-$6,000. Other views out West include an unusual Taos, N.M., area view with an adobe structure in fall landscape by Alfred Wands (1904‚ ‘98), estimated at $3,000 to $5,000.

In the Upper Midwest, and far beyond, Aaron Bohrod (1907‚ ‘92) is well known for his unique trompe-l’oeil style and magic realism. He blends both of these in the masterwork “Still Life ‘52 Anatomy of a Horse.” The oil painting is a feast for

the eyes, offering countless delightful experiences of visual trickery, and carries a $12,000 to $18,000 estimate. Also hailing from the state of Illinois, and a number of other Midwest locales, was the farmer folk artist Alfred Montgomery (1857-1922), famous for painting bountiful still life compositions of corn. In his paintings with corn, Montgomery detailed each kernel in high impasto. But here, the subject is a rare still life with apples. This deviation is sure to catch the eye of collectors at $2,000-$4,000. Another highlight is the

The selection extends to Europe and a rare bronze by French sculptor Aristide Maillol (1861‚ 1944), fresh from a trip to Paris for authentication, where she spent two nerve-wracking weeks stuck in customs

And like the “Wizard of Oz,” everything turns to technicolor with a selection of paintings that includes a 1912 oil by Kansas artist Birger Sandzen (Swedish/ American, 1871-1964). This landscape with a twilight moon over water was found in a Kansas City basement and is expected to realize between $60,000 and $80,000.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: My Top Ten Undervalued

I am getting pretty frustrated with the online filler stories about why you should ditch all your antiques because they now have no value. You know the stories. The antiques market has collapsed and kids today want none of it, so sell for nothing all of your silver, china, glass, brown furniture, collectibles, and pretty much everything else. I have yet to see any actual facts that back up these statements, but I have certainly heard my share of collectors who have read this garbage and believe that everything they own is and will remain valueless for the future.

So, yes, the market remains in a state of flux and every day I see things that are too cheap compared to what they once were. I also

run into collectors who stand and beat their breasts hoping that the prices will return to 1988. The reality is, in my opinion, the hyper price inflation of antiques in the 1980s and 1990s will be a long time in returning because those prices were an aberration in the history of collecting. Too much money married with too much greed, and speculation drove that market. So, I do not think the market will return at those levels anytime soon, but I do not believe that antiques and collectibles are valueless.

In the stock market, in my humble opinion, one should be looking for bargains rather than paying 52 week highs. Makes common sense. Buy General Electric when it hits its 52 week low and, barring the unforeseen, you will do well. Not rocket science. The same thing is true in antiques, particularly for new collectors or those looking to furnish their homes. I will argue until I am blue in the face that press board is never going to last when compared against solid wood furniture. So why buy the modern junk?

I offer this prognosticated list of 10 undervalued antiques that I think are just stupidly cheap right now:

1) Grandfather Clocks: Okay, so I saw an eightday late 18th century Berks

County, Pa., clock for sale in a co-op for $475! Enough said.

2) Victorian Furniture: It is never out of style, and I just bought an Elizabethan Revival hall chair for $60.

3) T oy Trains: Old school, but still more fun than any video game and, besides, you learn how to wire things. A bargain!

4) Christmas: My old friend Jim Morrison at the Christmas Center has always inspired me to add classic Christmas ornaments to my tree. Today, as families downsize, it is a bargain.

5) Painted Furniture: Remember when a grain decorated dry sink was $1,500 or more? How about $125 at Adamstown two months ago!

6) P olitical memorabilia: Okay, maybe too sensitive for most of us, but I do love holding political tokens from the campaign of 1860! Go, Honest Abe!

7) P re-1890 China: This is just nuts! How about assembling a set of Flow Blue or Onion Blue or Transferware. You can do it in a heartbeat and for no money. Mix and match. It gets even better.

8) Firearms: Never really ever a bargain, but I think there is a real softening in classic Winchester and early handguns. These are fun to shoot and wonderful to collect.

9) R egional Art: I remember when paintings by Harrisburg regionalist painter Ira Deen routinely brought $500-$750. Just saw two sell for under $200. Collect art from your hometown.

10) Gar den Stuff: Old concrete? Really? Yard sale season is here, and lots of really cool garden art is on the market. I see it at auctions and the flea markets, and this is an area where everyone can find something they like.

So hunt for those treasures now before the market rises!

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Special Sales Display Presents Unique Gift Options

Often social events in June usually have something to do with a wedding, a graduation, or Father’s Day. Fittingly, the special sales display in the month of June at the Haddon Heights Antiques

Center is dedicated to brides, grads, and dads. When it comes to dads, shoppers will find the types of antique and vintage items that many men like, such as sports memorabilia, barware,

militaria, and maybe even a vintage tie or two. A unique gift for a grad might be jewelry, a vintage fountain pen, a traveling case, or an old book on a subject they like. Brides might appreciate a piece of antique silver, a crystal vase, a hand-worked linen, or a beautiful antique picture frame.

When someone presents an antique or vintage item as a gift, they are assured of offering something unique that will stand out. Of course, the special sales display will also be decked out with vintage photos,

cake toppers, and other knickknacks appropriate to the theme.

Since June also usually ushers in some hot and steamy days, the air-conditioned Haddon Heights Antiques Center is a great place to hunt for antique and vintage treasures in comfort. Located at 531 Clements Bridge Road in Barrington, N.J., (for GPS purposes), it is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Fridays. For further information, call 856-546-0555.

Where’s The Market?

In the last column (4/26/24 Vol. 54, No. 17), I presented a viewpoint concerning the current state of the market, while taking a short glimpse of where it was a generation ago. One thing is easy to agree upon, it is an exciting time to collect Americana. By most accounts, market watchers would consider today as being a buyer’s

market. Noteworthy would be the category of furniture. My spin on this is that it’s a great time to furnish a house with actual furnishings that have character, history, solid construction, and value.

Antique dealers often lament younger people need to get interested in the market. I agree; yet, for most it takes time to generate disposable income when

in the early stages of a career, home ownership, and life in general. For those interested, there are opportunities throughout the middle market. Whether you have been around antiques your whole life or not, it is a fascinating and diverse world to dive into. Seek out the advice from a dealer friend and get to know local auctioneers.

A buyer’s market can

present challenges for appraisers. Condition as a rule of thumb is less forgiven today vs. before, and yet, good material in general is more scarce. With Baby Boomers downsizing, we are in a market cycle where a lot of things are hitting the open market. Buckle up. Next time, I’d like to discuss a topic often talked about, commission rates and buyer’s premium.

dairy country genre scene by legendary New York illustration artist Peter Helck (18931998). This slice of Americana features the ubiquitous and iconic Chevrolet advanced design model trucks, prevalent after WWII. The trio of Chevy truck models is seen hard at work on an idyllic, sunny family farm, ca. 1950. Obviously intended for advertising, no connection to a published ad has been found. Peter Helck’s legend includes an honor in his name awarded for accomplishments in

automotive illustration. This work is estimated at $5,000 to $7,000. Second in command in the sculpture category, or it could make the top spot, is a model by Chicago artist Wheeler Williams, best known for his public installations. This unique original, hand-sculpted work, or maquette, in terra cotta, is accompanied by a book by the artist inscribed, “To Tom McLaughlin from a fellow baloonitic of World War I.” The two had served together in the U.S. Balloon Corps in WWI. The sculpture and books were a gift, descended through the McLaughlin

family and offered here with an estimate of $2,000$3,000. No record of an original terra cotta work by Williams could be found.

This Soulis Spring auction will begin with an internet-only evening session of paintings, prints and posters beginning at 6 p.m. central time. The following day, a live session begins at noon with photography, paintings, prints, sculpture, and modern design.

Milestone Brings Summertime Fun With Eclectic Vintage Advertising Signs, Toys, Coin-Ops And Old Coins

California Collection Of Squeaky-Clean Gas And Oil Advertising Among Offerings In June 15 Auction

Milestone Auctions is mixing it up for its Satur

on fresh-tomarket gas, oil and travel-related signs, along with toys, coin-op machines and amusements; country store items; and dozens of other types of antiques, including timepieces and gold coins.

A Tonka #0875-5 Builders Supply Fleet set in crisp original factory box with inserts, is new/old stock in never-playedwith condition.

A Kingsbury #272 Pumper Fire Truck with (partial) original Kingsbury wood box, retains original white rubber tires, original rubber hoses and the scarce accessory fire hydrant, is 24.5 inches long. This version has a motor-driven pump, which is in working order.

“Throughout the auction inventory, the key word is condition,” said Miles King, co-owner of Milestone Auctions. “Many of the signs are in amazing condition, either mint or near mint. At the heart of the category is an advanced collection we picked up recently in California.”

The star attraction is an all-original Studebaker Art Deco porcelain neon bullnose sign. Double-sided

with a sharp-looking cobalt blue, red and white motif, this automotive classic measures 10 feet 6 inches long, 47 inches tall from the top to the Studebaker red dot, and 2 feet tall at the other end. Made by the noted sign manufacturer Walker & Co., this dazzling Art Deco sign comes from an advanced private collection and is expected to sell for $15,000-$25,000. A double-sided round porcelain sign for Cadillac

Authorized Service is another example of how effective a combination of primary colors can be in conveying a message. In equally fine condition on both sides and marked Walker & Co. Detroit, this appealing sign emblazoned with the distinctive Cadillac brand’s crown-andshield French coat of arms is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

Yet another boldly colored production is the red, white and blue double-sided

art. Miles King remarked that its condition is “very close to new/old stock and really beautiful.”

A subcategory that has been growing by leaps and bounds is that of plate signs made specifically to affix to gas pumps. The auction includes a Time Super Gasoline single-sided porcelain gas pump plate sign adorned with the image of a clock and made for the Time Oil Company of Los Angeles.

Toy trucks made of sturdy pressed steel have been hot sellers in Milestone’s recent sales, especially those made by Tonka. “Kids started playing with Tonka construction trucks in 1954 when the company’s first toy, a dump truck, rolled off the production line. They were made for active play, which is why it’s so unusual to

find a Tonka truck in truly mint/ boxed condition,” remarked King. The auction includes just that, a Tonka #0875-5 Builders Supply Fleet set in its crisp original factory box with original inserts. The toy is new/ old stock in never-playedwith condition and includes a pickup truck and interchangeable body truck with two beds. Highlights from the many other categories appearing in the sale include a Danbury Mint “History of America” set of 200 sterling silver medals; a Corum watch with a face comprised of 1904 $20 Double Eagle gold coin; a VMC 81D 10 cent Pepsi vending machine; a Herschell carved-wood carousel horse; a ladies’ 14-carat white gold and diamond crisscross ring; U.S. Navy WWII ship’s binnacle made by Lionel Corporation; and an all-original 1 cent Pulver Chewing Gum porcelain vending machine with a clown figure inside. Also waiting their turn to cross the auction block are

pedal cars, slot machines, games of skill, bar figures, cash registers, tobacciana, barber shop, soda pop and snack signs, knives, oil lamps and much more.

three,” explained Morphy. An artistic masterpiece with all-original castings and most of its original nickel plating, the Triple Eclipse was made sometime between 1902 and 1904. Following its period of service

as a public gambling device, the machine joined the fabled Dobby Doc collection, which was amassed in the 1930s and ‘40s and lay dormant until it was discovered in a Nevada warehouse in the late 1960s. A breathtaking combination of artistry and early technology, with the serial number 121

The iconic 1890s Vichy (France) automaton depicting young man serenading crescent moon, in excellent condition and working order, sold for $20,400 against an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.

An ornately decorative Kemaco Lion 1¢ peanut vending machine, unusual form with lantern-style globe, facade adorned with bas-relief lion’s head, a book example in Bill Ene’s reference book “Silent Salesman Too,” realized $19,200.

A ca. 1920s Mr. Peanut castiron roaster/dispenser was made as point-of-sale display for Planters Peanut Co. Powered by an electric motor, machine renders the illusion that top-hatted Mr Peanut mascot is operating the machine. One of very few known, restored condition, it sold for $135,300 against an estimate of $30,000-$60,000.

confirming it to be the earliest of only four known survivors of its type, it cashed out at $147,600.

Also from Caille Bros, a ca. 1910 “Loving Cup” dualwheel slot machine, similar to the manufacturer’s “Silver Cup” model, displayed original wheels and castings, and both “played and paid” correctly. Its optional 5¢ Gum side vendor was present but not in working order. The sought-after machine was won for $79,950.

In 1904, Caille’s other major Chicago competitor, Watling, produced the double upright slot machine known as “The Buffalo.” All original and in its nicely preserved quartered-oak cabinet, this model is distinguished by the ornate

The Princess Doraldina 5¢ fortune teller machine was made in Rochester, NY., with lifesize figure with a wax head, period clothing and costume jewelry, sitting behind window with row of cards before her. It went for $52,890 against an estimate of $15,000-$30,000.

This ca. 1904 Mills Novelty Co. (Chicago) original musical Big Six upright slot machine with colorful tin wheel, raised panels and patina sold for $48,000 against an estimate of $15,000-$30,000.

coin heads marked “Buffalo” which are seen at the top of each of the jointly-encased units. This rare machine sold at the midpoint of its estimate for $56,580. A countertop roulette machine made around 1932 by Caille Bros., the boxy wood with aluminum “Aristocrat” came to auction with provenance from the lifelong collection of Bill Howard. Original, unrestored and ready to play upon receipt of a 25¢ coin, it swept past its $15,000$30,000 estimate to settle at $38,400.

Who doesn’t love Mr. Peanut? At the sale, the jaunty mascot for Planters Peanut Company was ready to show off his jockeying talents in a way that would make even professional

mechanical bull riders jealous. Complete with top hat, cane, monocle and spats, the three-dimensional character was the focal point of a fully-functional ca. 1920 electric peanut-roasting machine. When activated, the figural character, who straddles the roasting barrel, renders the appearance that he is powering the machine with his cane, as an oarsman might do on a sculling team. Likely the finest of few that are known to exist, the roaster offered by Morphy’s easily surpassed its $30,000-$60,000 estimate to reach $135,300.

Both sports and coin-op fans stepped up to the plate to bid on an Amusement Machine Co. 1¢ All-American Baseball Game. A floor

which pitted the Pittsburgh Pirates against the ultimately victorious New York Yankees. Unrestored with its original cast-iron player and umpire figures and the original cardboard grandstand, it sold at the midpoint of its estimate for $55,000.

Those who were invested in the stock market during the Great Crash of 1929 probably wished they had consulted Princess Doraldina, a 5¢ fortune teller machine made in 1928 in Rochester, N.Y. The life-size figure of the eponymous clairvoyant was designed with an articulated wax head, wears period clothing and costume jewelry and sits in a booth behind a glass window with a crystal ball and row of

cards before her. Only Princess Doraldina knew prior to auction day that the $15,000-$30,000 estimate was too conservative. She proved her uncanny psychic skills upon securing a winning bid of $52,890.

Collectors of vending machines quickly identified the ornately decorative Kemaco Lion 1¢ peanut machine as being the actual book example appearing in Bill Ene’s reference book “Silent Salesman Too.” An eye-catcher with its lantern-style globe and facade adorned with a bas-relief lion’s head, it sold just below its high estimate at $19,200.

After the hammer fell on the final lot, coin-op expert

Tom Tolworthy, who had curated the auction’s contents, remarked, “The energy generated from another fresh-to-market collection proved once again that our move back to Las Vegas has been a huge benefit for collectors and the hobby in general.”

Dan Morphy, who served as principal auctioneer at the three-day event, echoed Tolworthy’s sentiments, commenting, “I was very pleased with the results and the turnout. We had over 100 live attendees, including a lot of new bidders and buyers, which is always a huge positive on many levels. We also had a number of potential consignors come to meet us and

see our Las Vegas operation. I can say with confidence that our fall Coin-Op and Antique Advertising Sale is already shaping up to be a blockbuster.”
