Edward Curtis: 150 Masterpieces From The North American Indian New Exhibit Opens At The Muskegon Museum Of Art Marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of renowned photographer Edward Curtis, the Muskegon Museum of Art is exhibiting 150 photogravures from “The North American Indian,” Curtis’s monumental project comprised of 20 volumes of text and over 700 large portfolio prints that sought to catalogue the Native American tribes of the Western United States. The exhibition, titled “The 150th Anniversary of Edward Curtis: 150 Masterpieces from The North American Indian,” will run through Sunday, Sept. 9. The Muskegon Museum of Art is located at 296 W. World Record Comic Book And Art Auction The Morgan Library And Museum Presents Exceptional Surpasses $12.2 Million Frank Frazetta Leads At $1.79 Million To Set Auction Record For Any Group Of Drawings By Piece Of Comic Art Thomas Gainsborough Renowned for his portraiture and depictions of rural landscapes, the 18th-century British artist Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88) is best known as a painter. However, he was also a draftsman of rare ability who extended the traditional boundaries of drawing technique, inspiring an entire generation of British artists such as John Constable (1776–1837) and J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). Running until Sunday, Aug. 19, the Morgan Library and Museum presents an exhibition solely focused on Gainsborough’s works on paper, bringing together 22 outstanding examples in graphite, chalk, oil paint, and other media. Included in “Thomas Gainsborough: Experiments in Drawing” are preparatory studies, finished

Bailey, director of the Morgan Library and Museum. “Famous in his day for his paintings of members of the British aristocracy and gentry, he eagerly turned to drawing as a respite from his portrait work. It allowed him the freedom to pursue his passion for rendering nature and scenes of country life utilizing new stylistic effects in color, line, and material. The Morgan is pleased to present its first exhibition on this important aspect of Gainsborough’s art.” To learn more, visit www.themorgan.org.

Heritage Auction’s May 10, 11, and 12, Comic Book and Art auction in Chicago, Ill., was the largest public auction dedicated to vintage comic books and original comic art and fetched $12,201,974, setting the world record for the most valuable sale of its kind. The top lot claimed its own record when artist Frank Frazetta’s original art titled, “Death Dealer 6, 1990,” first published as the cover for Verotik’s 1996 Death Dealer #2 comic book, more than doubled the all-time auction record for any piece of comic art when it sold for $1.79 million. “As the live session opened, the Frazetta painting had a bid of $600,000, but within moments it had come down to two collectors, bidding by phone, who waged a pitched battle for this very desirable painting,” said Barry Sandoval, director of comics operations at Heritage. The sale surpassed the previous record for the world’s most valuable comic book auction by more than $1.8 million, a record also set by Heritage Auctions in July 2012 at $10,389,821. The three-day,

Collecting The Obscure: The Rise And Fall Of The TurboGrafx-16 Super System They were even able to form a successful partnership with acclaimed Japanese developer HudsonSoft. This meant that many great original games were made for the system. Just check out “The Legendary Axe, “Blazing Lasers, “Alien Crush, “Splatterhouse, and “Bonk’s Adventure and you can see just what the system had to offer. Even today a lot of these games still stand the test of time. Sadly, by the 1991 holiday shopping season, it was clear that NEC was in trouble. Sega had managed to score a breakout hit with its powerful Sega Genesis home video game system, and software developers took notice. Even Nintendo had to fast-track its own 16-bit system for release in 1992 to fight off Sega’s onslaught. By 1992, NEC rebranded its company Turbo Technologies Incorporated and released the Turbo Duo to U.S. gamers for $299.99. The system featured an upgraded CD-ROM system along with the TurboGrafx-16 base unit, which were combined in a sleek package and came packaged with five awesome games. Sadly, by this time Sega had already released its own CD-ROM add-on for the Sega Genesis called the Sega CD. The Turbo Duo was regulated as an afterthought, which was a

THE

real shame because the system had a lot of incredible games that could only be played on it. By the end of 1993, both the TurboGrafx-16 and Turbo Duo were quietly discontinued, with NEC pulling out of the home video game market in the U.S. Its remaining inventory was sold through a mail-order-exclusive company known as Turbo Zone Direct. The company would sell some of the hardest-to-find titles all in brand-new and factorysealed condition for as low as $19.99 each. Some of these titles are now worth hundreds of dollars on the secondary market today thanks to increased collector demand for the system and its games. Today, the TurboGrafx-16 is one of the most soughtafter failed video game systems on the market. Systems can be had from $100 to $200 for the basic TurboGrafx-16 and anywhere from $300 to $600 for the Turbo Duo system, depending on what is included and the condition. Most of the popular games can be obtained quite easily, with prices ranging from $30 to $60 for the most common releases. Collectors of laterelease games like “Soldier Blade and “Air Zonk and CDbased games such as “Dungeon Explorer II and “The Dynastic Hero can expect to pay hundreds of

By 1987, the home video game industry was successfully recovering from the glut of low-quality software that proliferated the market during the Atari age. Atari, now a shadow of its former self, was left in shambles. Nintendo quickly became the new kid on the block with the success of the Nintendo Entertainment System, which hit U.S. retailers in 1985. This caused several competitors to fast-track plans to release more powerful home video game systems in an attempt to stop Nintendo’s growing dominance. Most would fail, and some would provide a worthy challenge momentarily, but in the end, Nintendo would remain king. One such company that was quietly watching Nintendo’s rise was Japanese electronics conglomerate NEC. NEC is most famously known for its electronics and computer division. The company scored a massive success in the 1980s by marketing a line of PC-compatible home computers. By 1987, its first home video game system, called the PC Engine, was released in Japan. The system sported a high-powered 8-bit processor, much like the Nintendo Entertainment System, but it had two of them working in tandem. This allowed the system to produce 16-bit graphical visuals that looked much better than Nintendo’s. After having some modest success in Japan with the PC Engine, NEC decided to bring its system to the United States under the name of TurboGrafx-16. Unfortunately for NEC, it took two long years to get the system ready for launch in the U.S., and by this time another much more versatile competitor, Sega, known for making highly popular arcade video games, announced its first true 16-bit video game system was ready for launch. Called the Sega Genesis in the U.S., the system boasted a powerful true 16-bit processor that put the TurboGrafx-16, along with Nintendo’s Entertainment System, to shame. And while Nintendo was already working on its own true 16-bit system, which would be called the Super Nintendo, NEC stood

behind its aging console. The TurboGrafx-16 launched in August of 1989 with a retail price of $199.99. This was almost double the price of the Nintendo Entertainment System and still $10 more than the more powerful Sega Genesis system released that same year. The system came packaged with one controller and a copy of the game “Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, which was a mediocre action adventure game that had no name recognition. By contrast, Sega chose to launch its new Sega Genesis system with a copy of its arcade hit “Altered Beast. What set the TurboGrafx-16 apart from its competition was the fact that its games came on small credit-cardsize game cartridges, and system owners could pay an additional $399.99 to be the first to own a CD-ROM expansion system that was already state-of-the-art upon launch. At the time, no other video game system offered a CDROM expansion drive, even though paying an extra $399.99 after paying $199.99 to own the base system was outside the realm of most gamers’ budgets. As a result, the CD expansion system sold poorly and could not attract too many developers to create games for it. NEC did its very best to attract third-party developers to create games for its system.

also consider the TurboGrafx16 a much better system to collect for investment purposes than most other video game systems released at this time due to the fact that most of the games have not been re-released as part of classic video game marketing. If you are considering getting into vintage video games, you cannot go wrong with the TurboGrafx-16 and Turbo Duo systems.

dollars per game, with ultrarare games like “Magical Chase selling for several thousand dollars on the secondary market. If you own a TurboGrafx-16 or Turbo Duo system with games, be sure to look up sold listings on eBay to see what some of your items are worth. You just may have some collectible games, but know that rarity and condition are key. The TurboGrafx-16 is my favorite system of the 16-bit era. Even though I owned both a Sega Genesis and a Super Nintendo growing up, my TurboGrafx-16 saw the most use. I highly recommend any video game collector or enthusiast check out the little system that almost could. I

A couple Mid-Century Modern tub chairs will suit those with a contemporary style, and a selection of hanging cupboards, tea tables and blanket chests will appeal to those with an affinity for the classic Pennsylvania style.

Moving into a new house? Recent college grad moving into a first place? With hundreds of lots of furniture going across the block, there will be deals on unique pieces for anyone’s new space. Attractive and beautiful conversation pieces to accent stylish areas are abundant in this sale. The bulk of the auction is comprised of a near endless selection of Americana smalls, such as bentwood boxes, redware platters, stoneware pitchers and crocks, cast-iron door stops, and decoys, all sure to incite competition amongst eager bidders. Plus, an unexpected collection of Native American and Inuit art will complement this sale. Inuit carved bone figures, Native American pottery, baskets and beaded items will certainly attract the attention of curious collectors. Those with an affinity for wearable art will find the selection of Native American silver and turquoise jewelry particularly compelling. Bidders with more niche or specific interests will find the smattering of antique toys or the numerous militaria related items to be more their speed. Collectors of silver and pewter

Winterthur, the Brandywine River Museum of Art, the Delaware Art Museum, the Delaware Museum of Natural History, Hagley Museum and Library, Mt. Cuba Center, Rockwood Park and Museum, the Delaware Historical Society’s Museum, Mitchell Center for African American Heritage, and Read House and Gardens will participate in the ninth annual Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A list of participating museums nationwide is available at www.arts.gov/ bluestarmuseums. “Visiting a museum is a great way to get to know a community, whether it’s in your hometown or a stop on a road trip,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “We appreciate the enthusiasm of museums all across the country who open their doors for military and their families to spend time together and have new arts experiences.” This year’s participating Blue Star Museums represent fine arts museums, science museums, history museums, zoos, nature centers, and children’s museums.

“As many military families spend the summer months moving from one duty station to another, or reconnecting with a parent who has returned from deployment, Blue Star Museums helps service members and their families create memories,” said Blue Star Families chief executive officer Kathy RothDouquet. “Blue Star Families has great appreciation for the generosity of the museums across the country who roll out the red carpet for the families who serve alongside their service members. We are thrilled with the continued growth of the program and the unparalleled opportunities it offers.” About Blue Star Museums Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America. The program runs through Monday, Sept. 3. The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard as well as Active Duty and Reservists, National Guardsman (regardless of status), U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common

access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum. About the National Endowment for the Arts Established by Congress in 1965, the NEA is the independent federal agency whose funding and support gives Americans the opportunity to participate in the arts, exercise their imaginations, and develop their creative capacities. Through partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, and the philanthropic sector, the NEA supports arts learning, affirms and celebrates America’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, and extends its work to promote

equal access to the arts in every community across America. About Blue Star Families Blue Star Families builds communities that support military families by connecting research and data to programs and solutions, including career development tools, local community events for families, and caregiver support. Since its inception in 2009, Blue Star Families has engaged tens of thousands of volunteers and serves more than 1.5 million military family members. Frick Acquires Rare Vase By 18th-Century Roman Silversmith Luigi Valadier Purchase Inspired By Major Exhibition Scheduled For Fall Of 2018 Luigi Valadier was the preeminent silversmith in Rome during the second half of the 18th century. His work was admired by popes, royalty, and aristocrats throughout Europe. His oeuvre will be the subject of an upcoming monographic exhibition and publication at The Frick Collection, “Luigi Valadier: Splendor in Eighteenth-Century Rome” (Oct. 31, 2018, through Jan. 20, 2019). Inspired by this project, the second in a series of exhibitions to focus on decorative artists who deserve fresh scholarship, the museum has purchased a unique vase by the artist. The vase, believed to be a special commission, is the only known marble example attributed to Valadier that was executed with gilt-silver mounts, rather than his more typical gilt bronze. The marble used for the vase is also

unusual, a rarely used blood-red variety identified as Rosso Appennino. The vase is currently on view in the museum’s library gallery. “An exceptional object by Valadier, this vase is an excellent example of the silversmith’s art and a superb object to represent him at The Frick Collection. We are thrilled to add it to our holdings, as it perfectly complements our works by Pierre Gouthière, Valadier’s contemporary in France. It provides a wonderful introduction to New Yorkers as a part of the forthcoming exhibitions,” stated Xavier F. Salomon, Peter Jay Sharp chief curator. To learn more, visit www.frick.org.

“Strike three! You are out!” Yes, the boys of summer are back. Baseball, hot dogs and mom’s apple pie are things to be enjoyed throughout summer and fall. This year, the official first day of summer, the solstice, is Thursday, June 21. To celebrate, the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium will offer hot dogs to all customers from 4 to 7 p.m. The frankfurter, also known as a “dachshund” or “littledog,” is thought to have been created in the late 1600s by butcher Johann Georghehner of Coburg, Germany. In America, the year 1893 was an important date in hot dog history. At the Chicago Colombian Exposition, visitors consumed large quantities of the little sausages nestled in a little bun. Also in 1893, a German immigrant who owned the St. Louis Browns, a Major League baseball team at that time, introduced the little sausage to fans, and it became standard fare at ball parks. For the month of June and part of July, the Emporium’s display case will be filled with items relating to America’s pasttime - baseball. There will be bats, signed balls, gloves, cards, and other memorabilia on sale. The Emporium is a 14,000-squarefoot building nestled in the center of the historic city of Burlington, N.J. Swann Galleries’ Auction of Graphic Design on May 3 offered vintage posters that defined the styles of the 20th century. In a curated selection of just over 250 lots, the highlight was Man Ray’s iconic poster for the London Underground, which reached a record $149,000. Done in the surrealist master’s iconic “rayographic” style, the asymmetrical poster equated the reliability with the nascent tube system with the timeless regularity of the solar system. It was the

world’s most expensive travel poster from June of 2007, when it sold for $100,906 at Christie’s, until 2012, when a poster by A.M. Cassandre sold at Swann Galleries for $162,500. The work was originally part of a pair of identical posters, with its complement reading “London Transport.” Additional auction records for stunning secessionist masterpieces included Alfred Röller’s XIV Ausstellung / Secession / Klinger Beethoven, 1902, for $57,200, and Frommes Kalendar, 1899, by Koloman Moser, at $25,000. Both works were purchased by institutions. A record was also achieved by Bon Appétit!, 1961, an advertisement for eggs by Niklaus Stoecklin in his hyperrealist New Objectivity style, at $8,450. A masterwork of printing designed by Charles Loupot in 1940 for the Lion Noir shoe polish company, in which a glossy black lion prepares to pounce from a matte black background, was purchased by a collector for $35,000. “This was our the best auction of Graphic Design since 2007 and the third-best since we began the category in 2001. The mesmerizing, two-color broadside was linen backed and measured 35-by-11 inches. Lot #651, a linen backed “Il Mago Delle Meraviglie” poster from 1949, also caught the eye of many bidders. It was decorated with a myriad of magical acts within the shape of a large owl. Estimated at $300$500, it made $1,680. Things were positive with lot #358, seven glass photo negatives owned by Houdini. Estimated at $2,000-$3,000, this group, which included images of the Atlantic City Orpheum Theater, restraints, and Hardeen broadsides, realized $5,280. And it was a “clothes” call with lot #602, a wine-colored brocade jacket and white silk shirt worn by Dutch magician Tommy Wonder. Estimated at $1,500-$2,000, the lot sold for $6,480. “Houdini continues to outperform estimates, and the tantalizing idea of unpublished and unknown material related to his life and career clearly drove prices well beyond our expectations. I was also pleased with the diversity of the sale, and how collectibles in a variety of categories really made the auction a ‘something for everyone’ offering. Our next magic sale, scheduled for Saturday, June 16, features our second offering from the collection of David Baldwin. It promises to be a strong auction and will feature automatons, RobertHoudin mystery clocks,

Open the case’s rear cover and look for the markings “10k,” “14k,” or “18k.” This should be easy to see, as it will be impressed into the inside back cover. If one of those markings is visible, then your pocket watch is gold. seen by millions of children and adults who happily paid their quarters and half-dollars for tickets. Millions of youngsters spent an extra quarter to ride atop Jumbo for a few short minutes. By 1881, he had grown nearly 12 feet tall and weighed over six tons. Along with two dozen loaves of bread, large quantities of fruit and 200 pounds of hay, he consumed a quart of whiskey daily. At that time he was possibly the largest elephant in the world and still growing. Antiques and Collectibles During his lifetime, Jumbo inspired an extraordinary number of toys, novelties and ephemera. There was a veritable treasure chest of Jumbo books, stories, poetry, chromolithographs, illustrations, and pamphlets. A popular seller was titled “Jumbo-Barnum,” a booklet about the giant and his owner. Countless novelties were produced and scooped up by an eager, fascinated public. Most of the Jumbo items, however, were nickel-and-dime goods bearing the famed elephant’s name and often his image. Puzzles, board games, and mechanical paper toys flooded store shelves. Also, toothpaste, packaged and canned goods of every type, whose pictorial wrappers are so highly collectable today, were sold. The nation’s emerging ad agencies used Jumbo as a promotional gimmick on lithographic advertising cards of the era. Clark’s O.N.T. spool cotton thread and Kazine Soap, for instance, produced multicolored card sets depicting the elephant’s exciting trek from London to America. These were given away free as inserts in product packaging to the buying public. Top favorites with collectors today are the numerous circus posters once used to exploit Jumbo’s presence in Spangleland, as the circus was often called. These posters
