registered online bidders, who participated through LiveAuctioneers.com, Bidsquare.com and Invaluable.com. There were also 437 phone bidders. All prices quoted include a 25-percent buyer’s premium. The oil-on-canvas portrait of George Washington after Gilbert Stuart done by former President Eisenhower (with whom Woodruff often played golf) was housed in a giltwood frame measuring 35.5-by-29.5 inches. It was signed lower right with a plaque reading, “To Nell and Bob from their friend Ike.” The portrait found a new owner for $50,000. The charcoal portrait on tinted paper by Norman Rockwell (N.Y., 1894-1978), titled “Portrait of Robert Winship Woodruff,” was artist signed and in a 26.5-by-21.5inch frame. It depicted Woodruff as a young man and sold for $43,750. A portrait of Woodruff as an older gentleman, with cigar, by Thomas E. Stephens (British/N.Y., 18851966) fetched $12,500. The Woodruffs led a full, exciting life, and the items in the auction reflected that zest for living. They were pulled from the couple’s four homes: Windcrofte, their opulent primary residence on 16 acres in Atlanta; the TE Ranch in Wyoming, the 8,000-acre one-time home of the legendary Buffalo Bill Cody (1846-1917); a two-story River House complex on 52nd Street in Manhattan; and Ichauway, a vast, 29,000-acre

Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Insane Rise Of Boba Fett And Investing In Collectibles In Reverse?
By Shawn Surmick In March of the year 2020, a whole new way of life was ushered in for a lot of people. Up until this particular point in time, most of us have never lived through a pandemic before. Along with the pandemic, the economy changed as well. Stimulus checks were doled out, and some people took pleasure in their favorite pasttimes and hobbies. This was akin to adding gasoline to a collectibles marketplace that was already on fire. Yes, I am well aware that not every single collecting market in the antiques and collectibles trade is going bonkers right now. However,

the vast majority of popular collecting markets, ranging from coins to comic books to vintage toys to sports cards to Pokemon, have seen massive price increases during the pandemic. While it is true that some of these markets have started to correct (sorry, modern era sports cards and Pokemon), others have continued their upward climb and reached new extreme highs (you’re quite welcome, coins and comic books). It is the insanity of some of these top trending markets that I want to discuss here. When you have been in the antiques and collectibles trade as long as I have, certain things fail to surprise you anymore. One of those things is how much certain collectors will pay to acquire something they inherently feel the need to own. I can assure anyone taking the time to read this article that the greater fool theory is alive and well. It is fallacy to rely on such a pseudoeconomic theory as a seller or investor, but the unpredictability of buyers is nothing new. Just research the psychology of why we buy, and you will have more than enough reading material to keep you busy for quite some time. And while you are studying the psychology of buying, you may also want to read up on the psychology of collecting. It is interesting to note that most people choose to buy things at the wrong time. It is also interesting to note that a lot of so-called investors
choose to invest when markets are at all-time highs. Intellectually, most people know that if you are trying to invest in something, it is best to buy low and sell high. The problem comes into play when this analysis is put to the test because most people make decisions out of emotion and not logic. So, by now you may be asking what does any of this have to do with the antiques and collectibles trade? Ironically, the answer is everything. In the year 2022, certain markets in the collectibles trade are soaring to all new highs. Pop culture fever has taken over the collectibles market! Case in point, in late December of 2021, the Disney Plus streaming service premiered
The Spring 2022
what “Star Wars” fans have long sought to see, the return of everyone’s favorite galactic bounty hunter. “The Book of Boba Fett” was an all-new series based on the journey of the hardened bounty hunter from “The Empire Strikes Back,” who is famous for taking Han Solo’s carbonite frozen body to Jabba the Hutt. To the casual “Star Wars” enthusiast who thought that Boba Fett’s end came in the beginning of “The Return of the Jedi,” you would be forgiven. However, Disney owns the “Star Wars” franchise now, and they cannot allow a cash cow as large as Boba Fett to simply die. Permanent death is almost unheard of in any pop culture art form. Just ask any

slightly altered from their standard format to mitigate the threat to Jordan’s healing bones after he broke his foot in October 1985. The Air Jordans’ soles were replaced with those used on the Nike Dunk, which were both softer and wider. Among baseball collectors, few pieces of lumber are more vaunted or valuable than those swung by Ted Williams, the last player to hit over .400 in a season. So it should not surprise that a game-used and signed Hillerich & Bradsby bat from Teddy Ballgame’s 1947 Triple Crown season now holds the record for the most expensive Williams bat ever sold at auction: $336,000.

toy collectibles. One of the lots in question was a very scarce rocket firing prototype Boba Fett action figure graded by AFA (Action Figure Authority) in 50 (very good condition). To give credit to both the buyer and seller, this was the more scarce Jslot version, and it was a near complete and full painted prototype. Make no mistake, these are highly sought by high-end collectors. This particular figure sold for a record price of $204,435, which includes Hake’s 18-percent buyer’s premium. I can confidently state that without the current rise in popularity of Boba Fett, this figure would not have sold for that much. So what made the buyer shell out all that money for this item now? It is obvious he has a definite fondness for Boba Fett. However, I am curious if the buyer considers this to be an investment as well? Why would someone buy an item like this at the top of the market and consider it to be a good investment? Is this not the very definition of the greater fool theory in action?
What collectors and investors in the antiques and collectibles trade sometimes forget is that in order to have a transaction there has to be both a buyer and a seller in the marketplace, or in this instance, at auction. This is Economics 101. Both the buyer and seller of any market-based transaction have a different perspective. In my opinion, the seller (or consignor) in this example was the smart investor. He or she analyzed the market and saw that Disney brought back Boba Fett. Based on that information, the individual then chose to sell this coveted collectible and reaped the potential rewards. This was a wise play in my opinion. That said, the buyer could still make money over the short or long term as long as Boba Fett continues to shine. However, in the collectibles marketplace, it is always wise to strike while the proverbial iron (or light saber in this instance) is hot. That is the moral of today’s story. Let’s call it the book of Shawn Surmick. You can thank me later.

comic book collector to explain it to you (spoiler alert: Superman isn’t dead either). As much as I like (not love) “Star Wars,” I watched the first few episodes of “The Book of Boba Fett” and came away feeling disappointed. It did not have the same look and feel of the original movies that I grew up with. As such, I never took the time to go back and watch the remainder of the season. I can say, however, that overall fan reaction was high, and in no time at all on pop culture collecting forums, Boba Fett was trending yet again. It is events like this that cause me to caution would-be speculators and hardcore collectors to control their emotions. Most of these individuals, however, choose not to read this column or take this advice, and it is quite costly to them in more ways than one. On March 16, 2022, Hake’s Auctions had an incredible online auction that featured several high profile vintage

acquisition will enhance Skinner’s strengths and will allow for further global reach. The acquisition of this auction house will give Bonhams greater access to the North American market through Skinner’s salerooms in Boston and Marlborough, Mass., and its digital platform for online sales. The purchase of Skinner will also build on Bonhams’ global business strategy, following the addition of Bukowskis, the leading auction house in the Nordics (based in Stockholm, Sweden) that was announced in January 2022. Founded in London in 1793, Bonhams, was acquired by the UK-based private equity firm, Epiris, in September 2018. Since that date, there has been substantial investment, specifically in digital technology, marketing, and new hires. The business operates globally from flagship salerooms in London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Hong Kong, with additional sales in Edinburgh and Sydney. This year the auction house will hold more than 400 specialist sales across 53 different categories. “Bonhams and Skinner are a great match. With its international reach, Bonhams brings the world to New England and gives our world-class specialists global access. We are all really excited at the potential created by bringing these businesses together,” stated Karen Keane. “Skinner is such an iconic presence in New England and much-loved and celebrated for the rich treasures it offers. It also has a well-established digital footprint throughout North America that complements Bonhams’ presence, which will allow both companies to reach more consignors and buyers. The acquisition will enhance the local to global strategy that underpins Bonhams’ strength in the core market, so I am delighted to This is Bonhams’ 101 New welcome Skinner to the Bond Street building in Bonhams family,” said Bruno Vinciguerra, chief executive London. Bonhams, the global auction house, based in London, has acquired U.S. auction house Skinner. The company will be known as Bonhams Skinner. Based in Boston, Mass., Skinner holds around 80 sales a year in 20 collecting categories including Americana, Fine Art and Collectibles, and Wine, and ranging from fine violins to contemporary paintings. Important sales have included a Qing Dynasty vase sold for $24.7 million in 2014, a record price at the time for Chinese art in the U.S., and the record-setting sale of “Manchester Harbor” by American artist Fitz Henry Lane that achieved $5.5 million in 2004, which remains the highest price for a work of art ever realised at a New England auction. Among other hihglights was and a bottle of whisky believed to be the oldest known, ca. 1860s, which achieved $137,500 in 2021. Skinner was founded in 1962 by Robert W. Skinner Jr., who hired Stephen Fletcher as his first employee. Fletcher is now executive vice president and chief auctioneer and owns the company with Karen Keane, its chief executive officer. Joining forces with Bonhams provides Skinner with opportunities for growth and audience expansion, while also maintaining connections with consignors and buyers in the auction house’s community. The

“Magic: The Gathering” Trading Cards Dominate Winter Auction Beta Black Lotus Card, Graded 9, Brings $45,000
“Magic: The Gathering” (MTG) trading cards dominated the list of top lots in Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers’ Winter Comic, TCG (Trading Card Games) and Toy Auction held Feb. 26, as the top five offerings, all MTG cards from 1993, combined to bring a total of $123,750. The auction was held online as well as in Bruneau & Co’s auction house located in Cranston, R.I. Soaring to the winner’s circle was a “Magic: The Gathering” Beta Black Lotus card, graded CGC 9 mint, considered a Holy Grail item for MTG collectors. It sold within
estimate for $45,000. The card is revered as the most powerful of the Power Nine. It’s also famous for the elegant artwork by Christopher Rush. “It was a phenomenal sale, and an absolute pleasure to get to handle such a wonderful collection of ‘Magic: The Gathering’ cards” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. auctioneer and the firm’s director of Pop Culture. “Original Alpha and Beta cards do not come out of the woodwork that often, especially Power Nine. It was certainly a trading card game dominated day.” All the CGC graded MTG cards in the auction were from a single owner and original owner in Virginia. The runnerup card was a “Magic: The Gathering” Alpha Ancestral Recall card, graded CGC 9.5 gem mint ($38,750). Like the Beta Black Lotus, it’s another MTG Holy Grail card, on most every collector’s wish list to complete, with Alpha print being the most coveted. Next in line was a “Magic: The Gathering” Alpha Timetwister trading card, graded BGS 8.5 NM-MT+. It

A copy of Detective Comics #359 (DC Comics, Jan. 1967), CGC graded 8.0, the comic book featuring the origin and first appearance of Batgirl, plus an appearance by Killer Moth, climbed to $4,000. Also, a group of 107 Marvel Comics Spider-Man comic books, #21#150, in conditions ranging from 4.0 to 7.0, went to a determined bidder for $3,875. “Magic: The Gathering” (known as Magic or MTG) is a tabletop and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast (now a subsidiary of Hasbro). Some clamshells were yellowed from aging and sun, otherwise good condition. These are a unique piece of “Pokémon” TCG history and would have been sold in a

The example in the auction proved to be something of a sleeper, sailing past its $5,000 high estimate to change hands for $9,375. “This was yet another auction proving that investing in pop culture collectibles such as comics and cards is a real addition to one’s financial portfolio,” said Kevin Bruneau, Bruneau & Co’s president and an auctioneer. “The strength
