“Many of the Gold Rush-era artifacts in the display have not previously been publicly exhibited,” said Adam Crum, president of Finest Known (www.FinestKnown.com) in Torrance, Calif. The “Ship of Gold” touring exhibit is being organized by Finest Known, Argos Gold Group, and National Treasures I LLC. The exhibit will be housed in a 40-footlong re-creation of the famous ship’s hull.

To mark the 35th anniversary of the historic 1988 discovery of “the greatest treasure ever found,” a $15 million “Ship of Gold” sunken treasure exhibit will begin a nationwide educational tour with its first portof-call at the Long Beach Expo (www.LongBeachExpo.com) collectibles show in Long Beach, Calif., Thursday to Saturday, June 22 to 24.

The display of recovered California Gold Rush treasures from the 1857 sinking of the fabled S.S. Central America will feature gold coins, assayer’s ingots, gold nuggets, and gold dust.

There will also be a treasure shipment box, items from the ship such as tableware, bottles, an engine room steam gauge, and the bell believed to be rung to announce meal service. One of the major factors in identifying the wreck site as the legendary S.S. Central America was the discovery of a green bottle still containing some gold dust. It was the first item from the ship retrieved from the ocean floor in 1988 and will now be displayed.

For the first time since its recordbreaking $114,000 sale, the world’s most valuable jeans, the California Gold Rush miner’s work pants recovered from the 1857 sinking of the S.S. Collectible Firearms Sale. The 1,421-lot auction event, featuring the types and brands of military, civilian and sporting arms hobbyists yearn for, will be held at the company’s suburban Cleveland gallery, with all forms of remote bidding welcome, including absentee, phone and live via the Internet.

A top prize in the sale’s opening session is a very fine Winchester Model 1866 Yellow Boy .44-caliber rimfire rifle,

manufactured in 1865-1866 and chambered in a Springfield .50-caliber carbine cartridge. The top of the frame is marked “MODEL / 1865 / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860 / MANUF’D AT PROV., R.I. / BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.,” and it bears all appropriate subinspector stamps as well as British proof marks on the breech of the barrel and top of the frame. It will be estimated at $8,000-$10,000.

A rare .52-caliber Sharps

Baseball legend and WWII hero pilot Ted Williams’ (19182002) personal Winchester Model 21 12-gauge shotgun, made in 1933, was kept in a safe at Williams’ home until after he died. The barrels are numbered 2612, other parts numbered 2320, metal retains 98 percent of reapplied blue finish, and excellent stocks with sharp checkering. Provenance includes Hunt Auctions 4-28-2012 Fenway Park sale of Ted Williams collection (retains auction tag). The estimate will be $8,000-$12,000.

which was designed by Oliver Winchester as the continuation to the famed Henry rifle. The auction example, manufactured in 1886, features a gunmetal brass receiver with a full-length octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has a two-line Winchester address, a German silver sporting blade front sight and an elevation-adjustable rear sight. With a desirable aged mustard patina, this beautiful Yellow Boy earns both its nickname and its pre-sale estimate of $15,000-$25,000.

carbine produced for the Confederacy in 1862 by S.C. Robinson in Richmond, Va., would make a coveted addition to any Civil War collection. This particular model is one of only 5,000 of its type that were produced in total. It carries the serial number 2684 on its barrel and the numbers 2684 and 12388 on the tang and lock, respectively. Strong interest is expected for this lot, which is estimated at $7,500-$12,500.

Another exceptional Winchester production is a 1st Model 1876 .45/.75-caliber rifle that was manufactured in 1878 and known as the “Centennial Rifle” due to its year of introduction. This model rose to prominence as a result of its use by such high-profile Old West figures as gunslinger Tom Horn, who worked as a U.S. scout, interpreter, range detective and early Pinkerton agent. The auction rifle is in exceptionally fine condition with a barrel and magazine that retain 97 percent of their blue finish. Its model number, 1876, is marked on the rear sight. The estimate will be $10,000-$18,500.

Many historically important firearms are entered in the two-day June event. Among them is an outstanding “Indian Wars” Spencer carbine

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: So Where Are We With The Market?

I am often wary about prognosticating about the antiques market, as, frankly, it is akin to trying to guess the lottery or predict the weather on a given hour a week away. But venturing into the lion’s den is something that I am not afraid to do, and so here it goes.

While the economists are predicting a recession at some point, I think a lot of dealers would say that it is here.

Despite lots of lookers, it seems as though the market is softer than it was a year ago at this time. Some shows, especially the small and well-managed and promoted ones, are solid, but I think others are really struggling. In the Midatlantic, the old adage was that you hoped for Republicans in D.C. because they would day trip to Lancaster and York to buy antiques. With a split Congress, I had hopes that we would see some impact, but not yet.

The items that seem to be selling, based on what I hear from dealers, are jewelry, jewelry and jewelry. Not surprising for a host of reasons. First, people are driven to valuable metals when thinking about tough economic times. While I doubt most would consign their collections to the furnaces to extract the gold or silver, it is still comforting to buy. Second, we are in a jewelry season, as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are big jewelry events.

I was surprised recently to be at an antiques mall waiting in a long line for payment (and I love lines in malls cause it means merch is moving). The people in front of me all had 1960-80s vintage ceramics. Not my taste, but clearly a hot item.

Watching the auctions, they seem soft as well. Items, especially esoteric material, that have high reserves are just crashing and burning. The comment always was that items from a

dead collector will always get higher bids at sale than items from a living collector. So items that are coming from old collections seem to be doing well, although I note a dead pool fascination of sorts with the prices on items sold now compared to what they brought back in the 1990s. I confess to playing that game and digging out old catalogs to see what something brought in the day vs. what it is bringing at a sale now.

I will also say, with tears in my eyes, that brown furniture seems to have taken a bit of downward spin. I have seen solid prices on great clocks and the like, but I also have witnessed really good 18th century furniture bringing a fraction of what a repro example would do sold by a big box store. Up at Adamstown, I have watched serpentine card tables go wanting for buyers at $200. My mania for clocks could easily get out of hand when a brass dial eight-day tall clock in a nice case goes for only $5,000.

It’s a buyer’s market, so let’s all be buyers!

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he

advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography,

American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

many to be a priceless national treasure. It is the single largest gold artifact in existence from the California Gold Rush and the most famous and desirable artifact from what Life magazine called ‘The Greatest Treasure Ever Found,’” furthered Crum.

“The Eureka Bar weighs 933.94 Troy ounces, a little over 64 pounds. The ingot’s value in 1857 was stamped by San Francisco assayers Kellogg & Humbert as $17,433.57, but today it’s insured for $10 million,” explained Crum.

“The S.S. scientific expedition using a six-ton remote-controlled submersible vehicle,” explained Bob Evans, the chief scientist and historian on the recovery missions.

“The tragedy of the S.S. Central America sinking took the lives of 425 of the ship’s 578 passengers and crew members, and the loss of the gold cargo was a major factor in the economically devastating financial Panic of 1857 in the United States,” said Evans, who will be at the Long Beach Expo to meet with visitors and answer questions about the S.S. Central America.

The exhibit also includes a prospector’s recovered saddle bag that contained gold coins, nuggets and gold dust. Visitors can see the only known complete treasure shipment box from the 1850s California Gold Rush period. with intricately engraved scenes of early San Francisco, a Madonna with child figurine, and a rare medal presented by the Order of Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus, the world’s second oldest order of knighthood, recovered from the sunken ship’s seabed debris field.

The record-setting miner’s pants and cigars in the display were discovered in the submerged trunk of first-class passenger John Dement of Oregon, a merchant and military veteran. The ship stopped in Havana, Cuba, on its ill-fated voyage from Aspinwall (now Colón), Panama, to New York, where Dement presumably obtained cigars.

The display will also have items found in the trunk of first-class San Francisco “royalty” passengers, Ansel and Adeline Easton, who were on their honeymoon trip to New York. His ornately embroidered, fashionable smoking jacket is one of those items in the exhibition.

“After the steamship was

overwhelmed and crippled by a hurricane, the captain, Commander William Lewis Herndon, ordered the lifeboats to be launched and the women and children, including Adeline, evacuated to a ship passing nearby. Ansel clung to debris in the water for hours after the ship sank until the crew from another vessel rescued him. Captain Herndon went down with the ship,” said Evans. The Eastons were reunited eight days later when the rescue ships reached port at Norfolk, Va.

“We are delighted to present these historic California Gold Rush sunken treasure artifacts for people to see in person,” stated Crum. “After this debut exhibition, we will be announcing future locations and dates in the United States and other countries for a ‘Treasures From the Deep’ touring display,” explained Crum.

View At The New-York Historical Society Exhibition Open Through Aug. 13

“Under Cover” examines the work and influence of J.C. Leyendecker (1874–1951), a preeminent illustrator and commercial artist who helped shape American visual culture in the first three decades of the 20th century through captivating advertisements including the legendary “Arrow Collar Man” and countless covers for the Saturday Evening Post. Leyendecker’s illustrations for a mainstream audience often had unspoken undertones; his work is especially revealing for what it says about the cultural attitudes of the period.

The exhibition showcases 19 of the artist’s original oil paintings and a wealth of related ephemera and features both Leyendecker’s editorial work, such as magazine covers, as well as commercial illustrations that appeared in the pages of popular publications, on roadside billboards, in store windows, and on mass transit. Laying the groundwork of Leyendecker’s narratives, these ads starred fashionable men in stylish settings engaged in activities such as boating, golfing, or reading in men’s clubs.

“Under Cover” delves into the early politics of gender while simultaneously examining how Leyendecker helped

J.C. Leyendecker’s (18741951) “The Crew Were Borne on Tossing,” dated 1905, is an oil-on-canvas, 30.5-by-22 inches, signed lower right, from “A Victory Unforeseen,” by Ralph D. Paine, Scribner’s Magazine, July 1905.

establish a nationalistic ideal of elite and athletic white male beauty. To address this aspect of his work, the exhibition juxtaposes some of Leyendecker’s paintings with artifacts that offer counter-narratives to his works’ exclusionary nature, including depictions of fashionable African American men during the Harlem Renaissance.

“Under Cover” is organized by New-York Historical from the collection of the National Museum of American Illustration, Newport, R.I. The show is guest-curated by Donald Albrecht, and coordinated at New-York Historical by Rebecca Klassen, curator of material culture.

A U.S. Model 1903

Springfield .30-06-caliber rifle is especially noteworthy for its original condition. Milestone’s experts describe it as having an early high-hump handguard, wide-groove single-bolt stock, and a bold as new “JSA” cartouche impressed in the block (a style used by Springfield Armory inspector Joseph Adams ca. 1915-16). The barrel is dated 1-16 SA with a pictorial bomb mark. “It is almost impossible to find these guns in any condition that haven’t been altered by the arsenal for various wars,” stated Miles King. It will carry an estimate of $4,000-$5,500.

A special highlight of the

auction is a selection of antique advertising related to firearms and many other products. Highlights include a rare and colorfully pictorial ca. 1909 Winchester pyramid-form hanging sign advertising cartridges and shot shells, est. $5,000-$8,000; a classic 1907 framed Winchester hunting dogs lithograph, est. $1,000$2,000; a 1920s Carborundum Razor barber die-cut, est. $300-$500; and a 1920s Nicholson Files tri-fold die-cut, est. $500-$750.

All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the internet through Milestone’s own bidding platform, LiveAuctioneers, Proxibid, or Invaluable.

For additional information on any item in the auction, call 440-527-8060 or email info@milestoneauctions.com.

From an outstanding selection of antique advertising for firearms-related and other products is this rare ca. 1909 Winchester pyramidform hanging sign advertising cartridges and shot shells, with original string, very colorful graphics of animals in the wild, measuring 15-by-22 inches. It will be estimated at $5,000-$8,000.

Interest in the Premier Collectible Firearms auction series grows with each successive edition, said Milestone coowner Miles King. “Gun collectors are very particular about accuracy, which our experts focus on intently when writing catalog descriptions. We also include as many photographic views as possible so relevant parts of each firearm can be visually assessed. Here at Milestone we think like collectors because we are collectors. We’re well aware of what remote participants want to know and see before placing a bid, and we make sure to provide it. This sort of transparency adds an important layer of confidence to the bidder experience.”

Milestone’s gallery is located at 38198 Willoughby Parkway, Willoughby (suburban Cleveland), Ohio. Start time both days will be 10 a.m. EST.

This superb Winchester 1st Model 1876 .45/.75-caliber rifle was manufactured in 1878 and marked “1876” on rear sight. Known as “Centennial Rifle” due to its year of introduction and made notable by gunslinger Tom Horn and other highprofile figures of the Old West, it remains in exceptionally fine condition with bright bore and barrel and magazine retaining 97 percent of blue finish. The estimate is $10,000-$18,500.
