John Hess Delivers High Powered On-Site Sale For Breininger Family Sale Highlighted By Berks County Pottery By Karl Pass Conestoga Auction Company, a division of the John Hess Auction Group held an on-site sale on behalf of the Breininger family at the family residence, just outside the rural Berks County town of Robesonia, Pa., on May 21. It was the eighth on-site sale for the late Lester Breininger, wife Barbara, and three children. A ninth and expected to be final sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, and will include the real estate. The large residence, known locally as Taylor Mansion, is a late 19th-century, 20-room house, whose original owner was iron industry magnate George Taylor. The late local historian and

Since the mid-19th century, when the New York Knickerbockers played the first organized baseball games using modern-day rules, New York has been home to some of the sport’s most successful and beloved teams. Opening Friday, June 10, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibition “The Old Ball Game: New York Baseball, 1887-1977” will include nearly 400 baseball cards featuring players from numerous teams, from the New York Metropolitans and the Brooklyn Bridegrooms to the Giants, Dodgers, Yankees, and Mets. All of the cards are from the collection of The Met and many will be on display for the first time. The exhibit will run until Thursday, Oct. 20. Highlights of the exhibition include never-before-shown cabinet cards of the late 19th century, such as an 1894 example picturing George Davis, the Hall-of-Famer shortstop for the New York Giants. The first six hitters in the Yankees’ famed 1927 lineup - Earle Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri, also known as “Murderers’ Row” - will be represented through cards published in the 1920s and 1930s by the American Caramel Company and Big League Goudey Gum, respectively. The legendary “Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” in

interest in selling a system in which they received no further retail sales of software from. Sony learned a costly lesson from the experience while other video game hardware manufacturers took notice. Still, at the time, the foundation for digital-only media was successfully laid. Today, the debate still rages on over how the future of the video game industry will be defined. Video game manufacturers have repeatedly hinted at a future in which physical copies cease to exist. Manufacturers of video games praise this idea. Without having to deal with physical manufacturing costs and a non-existent secondary market (no secondary or used game sales) all of the leading software producers would rake in more profit. This has non-video game playing executives salivating at the mouth
be a 3DS handheld system or the home Wii U console) is due to the glut of classic Nintendo franchises that are readily available for download direct from Nintendo’s own eshop online store. Some of these titles can be purchased for as little as five dollars each and make owning the physical copy much more cumbersome and not worth the effort. Antidigital crusaders have attempted to make the claim that owning physical copies are the only way to ensure true ownership because a digital copy is not transferable and only playable on the hardware system it is downloaded on. As a result they argue, if something happens to the video game system in question your digital copies become worthless. Ironically,

The glut of electronic media readily available in digital format is daunting and ever increasing. Consumers now have the luxury to purchase music, movies, and video games without ever leaving their house and get access to their purchase almost instantaneously. This is causing mass controversy in certain collectible fields that this technological advancement has affected. Music collectors were first to have to deal with this phenomenon, in that the very first digital music players appeared on the scene well over 16 years ago. After the arrival and market saturation of digital music players (thank you, Apple) came the rise in increased memory. Both computers and
specifically, collectors were worried that the rise of digital media would signal the decline of physical media. Sony was first to support this new trend by creating the first all-digital portable video game player known solely as the Playstation GO. The system had no external game slot and worked by downloading games solely from an online store. The concept was revolutionary at the time and praised by the general media. Within a year the system would be considered a critical failure. Video game consumers failed to see any advantage in owning a portable video game system in which they had no control over the secondary use of the media purchased. Selfdescribed video game collectors simply refused to purchase the system altogether while retailers had very little

more specifically, home video game consoles, were next in realizing this technological marvel. All the top video game console manufacturers created their own online electronic “e-shops” to distribute popular video games direct to the consumer. Movies became a necessary byproduct of this increased memory and many of the top video game manufacturers courted various direct to consumer movie streaming services like Netflix and Hulu and advertised their machines as multi-functional entertainment devices. This marketing ploy helped consoles like the Sony Playstation 3, which had a built in Blu-Ray player, achieve mass market success. At first, video gamers arose in protest to these developments - thanks in part to the rise in popularity and collectability of classic video games consumers. More
while shareholders look on in awe. All three of the big video game manufacturers (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft) currently offer an online video game store in which exclusive titles which are not sold in retail stores can be purchased and downloaded by consumers. The popularity of these online stores (similar to Apple’s own iTunes store) has been growing with each passing year. There is no reason to believe that the day will not come when buying a physical video game at a retail store is regarded as being obsolete. Nintendo has had great success in bringing its mass catalog of vintage video games to the masses via its own online store. In fact one of the best reasons to own a current Nintendo system (whether it

Burdick (1900-63), an electrician by profession, deposited more than 300,000 items at The Met between 1943 and 1963, including more than 30,000 baseball cards, for which he developed a cataloguing system that remains in use today. Since 1993, in response to the overwhelming enthusiasm of collectors and fans, The Met has put on display groupings from the Burdick Collection of several dozen baseball cards at a time, rotating them at sixmonth intervals. The exhibition is organized by Allison Rudnick, assistant curator, Department of Drawings and Prints.

Among the strengths masters Pisanello (Italy), of the collection - which DuprÊ (France), Reinhart (Germany), and Jonghelinck (Netherlands). A selection of the portrait medals will be featured in a major spring/summer exhibition opening in May of 2017. show will be accompanied by public programming and an in-depth scholarly publication that catalogs the entirety of this important collection. “Henry Clay Frick had an abiding interest in portraiture as expressed in the paintings, sculpture, enamels, and works on paper he acquired. At the same time, the intimate scale of the institution will offer a superb platform for the medals to be appreciated as an independent art form, one long overdue for fresh attention and public appreciation, said Director Ian Wardropper.

The Frick is pleased to announce a promised gift of portrait medals from the Stephen K. and Janie Woo Scher collection. An initial gift of about 450 medals will trace the development of the art of the medal from its inception in the 15th century through the 19th
