Greece to man her. Among those signing on are Hercules, Hylas and Acastus. Unknown to Jason and the rest of the crew, Acastus is the son of Pelias, who was dispatched by his father to sabotage the expedition. Hera instructs Jason and his Argonauts to look for the Golden Fleece in the land of Colchis. Their first stop is the Isle of Bronze, where they are to take on provisions and nothing else. Hercules, however, steals a brooch, thus bringing to life one of the island’s protectors, the 100-foot bronze statue Talos. The marauding Talos lays siege to the Argonauts, finally grounding to a halt when Jason (as instructed by Hera) drains the life out of the statue by opening a large plug on the monster’s heel. Hylas, however, is crushed to death when the now-lifeless Talos comes crashing to the ground, demoralizing a guilt-ridden Hercules. The journey continues at Hera’s direction, with the Argonauts meeting with Phineus, a blind prophet who is being tormented by harpies. After the men capture and cage the winged beasts, a liberated Phineus tells Jason how to reach the land of the Golden brought Fleece. It will be a perilous journey, with the Argo attempting to navigate the treacherous Clashing Rocks. The Argonauts finally reach Colchis, but the intrigue and danger continue. The capture and return of the fabled Golden Fleece will not be an easy endeavor. “Jason and the Argonauts” premiered in Boston, Mass., on June 19, 1963. Although the film garnered some good reviews, most notably from Daily Variety, it failed to ring many bells at the box office. Years later, however, the picture became a baby boomer classic, with actor Tom Hanks

being one of its biggest fans. “Fantastic” is the best word to describe “Jason and the Argonauts, a film which special effects impresario Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013) considers his personal best. materials, history and process (along with some genealogy) is important in separating the good from the great. Condition is the other key determinate in looking at textiles and one that has some rigid rules to follow. Some quilts and coverlets were stored away in dowry chests never to see the light of day and are thus in bright as new condition. Others were used and abused by families and pets and often are only fit for the rag box. And then there are the ones in the middle. These are tough to evaluate as some have faded colors but great quilting. Others are rare in pattern but poor in condition. Making a decision about what to buy becomes a very subjective matter. We purchased, at the same sale, an Amish quilt that had some condition issues, but it was very early for an Amish quilt and thus filled a gap in our collections.

For a number of years, my wife owned a quilt store in Lancaster County. That, along with my connections in the antiques world, has prompted many an after-dinner conversation about who, how, and why to collect quilts and coverlets. I recall many years ago a magazine did a thoughtful look at what was hot and what was not in the antiques world. This was back in the 1980s, although I would say that the wisdom of the article is still true today. The author pointed people toward things like early English oak and American Empire as two styles

the 20th century loved quilts, particularly Amish examples, as they saw the use of big, bold geometric shapes as reflecting their aesthetic. Later on, the high prices for Baltimore album quilts on “Antiques Roadshow” drove all manner of patterned and figural quilts to crazy prices. Prices have moderated, but there are still trendy moments were quilts bring way more than they should. That being said, we went to an auction recently and acquired several wonderful quilts at really reasonable prices. The first and best was a crib quilt with a figural scene and fine quilting. The latter was what drove my wife’s eye. Exquisite hand-done quilting is a mark of great quilt quality, and this example was a 10 out of 10. Add in the unusual subject matter of figures in a landscape, and it got even more interesting. The fabrics were datable and so we could put this in the 1920s. The price was well under $500 and in our minds a genuine bargain. Collecting textiles is great fun. It is the challenge of a hunt where your knowledge of

in furniture where prices have remained the same since the 1920s. Similarly, the author noted that while most folk art was highly valued, particularly quilts, woven coverlets, were the real bargain. Today, I would still argue that coverlets are one of the best buys in the collecting world. They are beautiful and handmade and will not break the bank to acquire. While they are common enough to be found, it takes some real work to find examples in really good to great condition. You can collect examples from your home community and seek different patterns. If you are not committed to buying signed examples, the market is your pearl, as most examples bring much lower prices, even if more elaborate, than ones signed by the maker. Quilts are a market that to my mind swings with how America decorates. If we are in a nationally nostalgic mood, then quilts do really well. They conjure images of a grandma (or the more-oftenthan-not mythical quilting bee) making a quilt for a grandchild. The modernists in

So when the British East India Tea Company came in to Boston Harbor, colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the water. The British had no desire to give up the Tea Tax, because they drank more than one million pounds of tea each year. This uprising was among the colonists’ first act of defiance against British rule, and it sparked a surge of patriotism throughout the 13 colonies. Campaign buttons from John F. Kennedy are enormously popular among collectors, who aggressively pursue buttons from a set known as “The Big Four.” They reportedly came from longtime Kennedy family friend Frank Allen, whose intention was to create a set of campaign buttons that would stand out from the scores of others made for the 1960 campaign. Allen brought all four to Hyannis, Mass., to show them to family patriarch Joseph Kennedy, who was outraged, reportedly declaring, “My son is going to be the next president of the United States! You can’t use ugly pictures like this!” It is said he threw the buttons across the room, saying he never wanted to see them again. Joseph Kennedy’s objection notwithstanding, the buttons are in high demand among collectors, who have an opportunity to acquire three in this

and decorative wares. A desk from the U.S. House of Representatives, ca. 1857 (estimated at $30,000+) was designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the Capitol whose renovations included the enlarged dome surmounted by a statue of a Native American princess, emblematic of Liberty. Chairs and desks were ordered as part of an 1857 renovation, overseen by U.S. Army Quartermaster Gen. Montgomery C. Meigs. There were 241 Congressmen at that time, but when 11 states seceded from the Union, the number of members was reduced to 175. Excess furniture then was distributed to other government buildings and sold to the public. The offered desk, which is not accompanied by a chair, was manufactured by Doe & Hazelton of Boston. When the House of Representatives was refurbished in 1873, any remaining desks and chairs were sold off. Examples reside in several museums (Smithsonian Institution, High Museum of Art, Lincoln Memorial University at Harrogate, Chicago History Museum, Ft. Wayne Historical Society). Historic Rock Ford Museum In Lancaster Hosts New Exhibit

The 1st Continental Rifle Regiment, Summer-Winter 1776, as depicted by artist Don Troiani.

Ferree, Heinnerich Fesler, and the Baker family of riflemakers is showcased. As has been articulated in the writings of both Joe Kindig Jr. and Joe Kindig III, despite their highly functional purpose, the unique personal styles and advanced artisanship of these rifles has earned them a prominent place in early American decorative arts as fine examples of what was perhaps the “first truly American art form.” This exhibit entails far more than a display of Revolutionary War weaponry. Rather, it is presented in a narrative format to tell the story of how Lancaster County and its rifle makers played a pivotal role in supplying American rifle regiments with a weapon This is a fine John Phillip Beck, ca. 1772, long rifle, courtesy of the Historic Rock Ford that provided the accuracy Collection. and flexibility to successfully overturn the tactics of musket and bayonet wielded by rigid columns of troops that had previously ruled the battlefields of PRESENTS: 18th-century Europe. Museum of Pennsylvania as well as from the private collections of John Kolar, Paul Ware, David Hansen, and the late Joe Kindig III. Of significant consideration are two loans from the National Museum of the United States Army, The Thomas Tileston 1773 rifle as well as the 1776 seal of the 1st Continental Regiment, of which Edward Hand was the first commander and also commissioned the fabrication of a regimental standard, which contains the image on the seal. Edward Hand’s signature is on the only known surviving document bearing the original imprint from this seal. This exhibit represents the first, and perhaps the only, occasion that these weapons have been brought together in a single exhibition. It is accented by storyboards, maps, and illustrations from the work of renowned military-history artist Don Troiani, all to place these artful weapons in their proper historic context. The Elverson Show Successfully Returns The Elverson Antiques Show hosted 41 dealers at the Twin Valley High School on May 7 and 8. The show, started over 50 years ago as a

fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company, now benefits the school’s lacrosse club, whose members help during setup and with food service

during the show. The show returned to its familiar location after a twoyear hiatus due to the pandemic, and the dealers and public couldn’t have been happier. Despite the torrential rain on Saturday, those people who braved the weather were not disappointed. Dealers from eight states offered a variety of goods, from decorated blanket chests, colorful quilts, and blue-decorated stoneware to baskets, folk art, holiday decorations, sewing accessories,

redware, cookie cutters, lighting, ceramics, butterprints, wooden ware, and painted smalls. Comments such as, “I’m so glad it’s back!,” and, “What a beautiful show!,”

were heard frequently as people shopped, and business was good. Plans for a fall show are in the works and will take place Saturday and Sunday,

Oct. 29 and 30. To learn more about the show, visit www.elversonantiqueshowandsale. The photos are of items offered for sale at the show.

Popular German-American Ten-Plate Stoves By James Fritz The ten-plate stove was popular especially with German communities, in the later part of the 18th century and was in use well into the 20th century. The door on the front of the stove opened into the firebox into which small pieces of wood were fed. The ashes had to be removed by small shovel. The door to the upper chamber allowed the baking of bread or pies as well as provided warmth to the kitchen or

living quarters. The warm glow that emanates from the cast-iron plates in winter is a kind of warmth that has to be experienced. These stoves cast at furnaces throughout Pennsylvania and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic served as the first portable form of cast-iron stove and were a highly innovative tool in the early American household. When entering the second floor, of a house, one could see a 5-inch tin pipe extending from the floor through the ceiling, and then the pipe

would enter the brick chimney, which would have been located in the center of the building. One would see tenplate stoves on first and second floors with pipes reaching up through the ceiling and bent into a hole in the chimney. A fire hazard to be sure. On cold nights one would be thankful to sleep next to the stove or pipes running up into the attic chimney. Meats were smoked in the garret next to the chimney, where a hole was made and

the smoke would billow out onto the hanging meats. Usually these areas were walled in with beaded boards to form a chamber. The meats would be hung in rows on long sticks made of hickory. One often finds in the garrets of early homes of this era charred saplings, which were the roof supports, called purlins and tied into a beam that ran the length of the house. Stoves Continued from page 9

German-American kitchen because the cooking and sometimes bathing would occur next to the hearth. Clothes were hung by the fire for drying during the winter months. From the hearth crane hung wrought-iron pots, and on the hearth were additional pots and toasters, waffle makers and other implements. The hearth was usually constructed of large pieces of stone or brick to catch sparks that would snap and pop out onto the floor when the fire was underway. Solid shutters were installed across the opening of the fireplace on hinges to keep heat generated from tenplate stoves from escaping up the chimney, or to keep other

pests out during spring and summer. There have been raised hearths for cooking inside the walk-in fireplace with an arched opening underneath for the storage of wood. To find an extant raised hearth in a fireplace is an unsual sight today, because most have been removed. If one views old woodcuts carved by German craftsmen during the time of Martin Luther in the 1500s, one can plainly see the use of raised hearths in German homes for cooking. A large square handhewn beam usually served as the lintel beam/mantel. Other hand-wrought implements of fireplace use were hung next to the fireplace along with leather bellows to tease fire out of the last ember.
