The dog features fine detail, including an open mouth with tongue and stampdecorated basket holding a jug. The monkey, expressive in his raised arm stance,

Historical Society Of The Cocalico Valley Opens New Exhibit

This rare printed fraktur taufschein (baptismal certificate) printed by the Ephrata Cloister Brotherhood was decorated by the “Early Ephrata Artist” for Maria Barbara Christ, baptized in 1765. The taufschein was a gift to the society by Charlotte Putt. The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley in Ephrata, Pa., is pleased to announce the opening of its new exhibit titled “Fresh Findings From the Past” in its museum located at 249 W. Main St. The exhibit, which occupies two of the museum’s first-floor display rooms, opened on May 4 and will run through Dec. 31, 2020. Featured in the exhibit is an eclectic sampling of artifacts, manuscripts, photographs, etc. that have been acquired by the society, either by donation or purchase, during the past 10 years, and which have never previously been exhibited to the public. The exhibit includes approximately 160 artifacts dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries representing all of the municipalities located within the Cocalico Valley. Items range from rare, one-of-a-kind manuscripts to more common utilitarian items such as plastic advertising items dating from the 1950s. From Akron Borough, a 1906-10 guest register from the Akron Hotel and a 1929 $10 Akron National Bank note are included. From Adamstown Borough is a scarce original 1898 printed bird’s eye view of the town and plastic advertising items from Phares G. Harting’s general merchandise store. Denver Borough is represented by a traveling barber kit used by local barber Harry H. Kline (1894-1966), street banners from the 50th anniversary of the borough and the Denver Fire

Company, and a Colonial costume worn by Stephen Malinick for Denver’s 75th anniversary celebration in 1975. From Ephrata Borough is one of the original Ephrata Railroad Station signs; the original circa 1805 brass seal of the Downingtown, Ephrata and Harrisburg Turnpike Co., present Route #322 or Main St.; and wooden signs from the Ephrata Shoe Co. and the Stunzi Silk Co. Also from Ephrata is the Ephrata High School football jersey worn by Larry Loose in 1956 and a large cotton banner from the Ephrata High School Class of 1910. In addition there is a rare 1838 needlework sampler by Amanda Heitler of Ephrata, a circa 1815 Adam and Eve broadside printed by Samuel Bauman of Ephrata, and a wonderful late 19th-century painted cast-iron toy train owned by brothers Harry and Edwin Mohler of Ephrata when young boys. From Clay Township is the 18671894 cabinetmaker’s ledger of William Romig of Weidmansville; a circa 1910 cotton applique crib quilt made by Amanda B. (Snyder) Landis; and an 1857 hair sample book of Mary (Eberly) Shirk, which contains braided hair samples from her friends and relatives. Ephrata Township is represented by a circa 1925 “White Owl” baseball uniform worn by James N. Rhoads; the team was based in Murrell. In addition, there is an Continued on page 2

includes impressed buttons to the front and tail of its coat. Among the best Pennsylvania redware animal sculptures to come to auction in recent years, it descended in an Adams County, Pa., family to the current owner. Rock Ford Announces New Podcast Mini Series

Southern Historical Material To Highlight JSE & Associates Americana Auction on page 5

Rock Ford Plantation is excited to announce an upcoming series of podcasts about Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand and the history of his home at Rock Ford. The series is produced by Heather Teysko, who has one of the longest continuously running independent history podcasts and has been broadcasting since 2009. Although she currently resides in Spain, Teysko grew up in Lancaster, where she served as a docent at Rock Ford while in high school. She has retained a strong interest in her former hometown and is enthused about the idea of using podcasting to show how small museums can use this technology to tell their stories to a wider audience. According to a 2018 Pew Study, 44 percent of Americans have listened to a podcast. Nevertheless, Teysko’s Rock Ford series is remarkable in that it represents one of the first times that a historic house museum has been the subject of a podcast series. “It’s an opportunity to share Edward

Hand’s story with a much larger group of people, not just in Lancaster, but around the world,” states Teysko. Teysko’s podcast is currently a three-episode mini series consisting of Teysko’s discussions with Rock Ford’s board president, executive director and curator. The first episode focuses upon the life story of Edward Hand. The second discusses Rock Ford in the broader context of Lancaster and American history, and the third episode is a walk-through of the first floor of the mansion with the curator, highlighting several items in the collection. “Podcasting is a new way for us to showcase Lancaster as an outstanding makers’ community that fabricated such fine pieces during the life and times of General Edward Hand,” states Rock Ford curator Sarah Alberico. The podcast may be found on the Rock Ford website and will also be available on iTunes, SoundCloud, YouTube, Spotify, Continued on page 3

Stoner; and a pieced privy bag made by Fannie Widders in the early 20th century. For those unfamiliar with privy bags, they were made to hold the “necessary” paper in the outhouse or privy. An array of items from East Cocalico Township are also displayed. Included in the exhibit is the original 1734 Penn land patent issued to Eberhard Ream for the land that now includes the town of Reamstown. In addition, there is a circa 1845 man’s beaver top hat made by David Blensinger of Reamstown; a 1923 original oil painting on canvas by artist John Wesley Von Nieda, a native of Swartzville; and the unusual combination sign and clock used by Dr. William N. Lober in the window of his Main Street doctor’s office in Reamstown. West Cocalico Township is represented by the telegraph keys and sounder used at Reinholds Station; a printed taufschien (baptismal certificate) of Maria Palm, who was born in 1850 in the township; and a printed corn meal bag from the Reinholds mill of Oscar B. Select Chinese And Japanese Art Excelled Paintings took four out of the top five spots in Clarke Auction Gallery’s May 5 sale that was filled with strong and surprising results, with many items defying their estimates. Leading the top paintings were two watercolors on paper made in 1969 by Shiy De-Jinn (Xi Dejin, China, 192381). The top lot of the auction was a vibrant street scene of a market and crowds outside a temple and bright storefronts that attained $30,000. The other was a river landscape depicting the rolling mountains of Taiwan and misty waterways splashed in blues and greens, which went for $18,750. Both works measured 18.75-by-24.75 inches. “Both paintings were notable for their bold use of color and resonated with buyers,” said Senko Imamura, Clarke’s Asian art and antiquities specialist. Japanese artists were also represented in the auction, including a pair of abstract paintings by 106-year-old Shinoda Toko, who has primarily worked with Japanese sumi ink and lithography. A 1983 interview in Time magazine asserted “her trail-blazing accomplishments are analogous to Picasso’s.” Achieving

blacksmith son, Hiram K. Duck. Also exhibited from Brownstown is a 1929 $20 Brownstown National bank note. A unique quilt included in the exhibit, while only 36 years old, has a most interesting story connected with it. The quilt was made in 1983 by the two fourth grade classes at the Lincoln Elementary School, taught by Mrs. Young and Mrs. Conte. The patches were cut and sewn by the students, and the quilt was quilted by several of the students’ mothers and grandmothers who brought a quilting frame into the school and quilted the bed covering right in the classroom. At the end of the school year, during “Lincoln School Days,” the quilt was auctioned off and purchased by the late Dr. Michael Szutowicz, the father of one of the students. Betsy Young, one of the teachers, reported that the money received from the sale of the quilt was donated to the restoration fund for the Statue of Liberty, which was refurbished during 1984-86. The quilt was discovered at a sale at Horst Auction Center, Ephrata, by Robert Dickershied, who purchased it and donated it to the society. Among the patches is a silhouette of the Statue of Liberty along with two patches containing the names of all the students who worked on the quilt written in cursive in red ink. Admission to “Fresh Findings From the Past” is free to all. The museum’s hours are Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., or by appointment. For an appointment or additional information, call 717-733-1616.

I think that almost all collectors have a bit of an ego streak in them. It comes from studying a subject so deeply that you soon begin to think that you know more than anyone. It manifests itself when you are in a shop or at an antiques mall, and you spot an item and second-guess the seller about what it really is. Now, no one is an expert on everything, and often with a generalist dealer, a knowledgeable collector can identify a treasure. I suspect that we have all been there. Conversely, however, I think that all of us have also at some point or another second-guessed a dealer and found we were wrong. This happened to me yesterday. We were out looking for Indian beadwork. We stumbled upon a shop that was part bead source for Indians and part trading post. Such places are often found in Indian country, and they are where beaders come to get new materials and often trade finished work. The finished work for sale is of varying quality and usually reflects the styles of the tribes in that immediate area. So, I walked in and soon spotted a bandolier bag hanging on the wall. Such bags were thought to have been copied by Great Lakes tribes from military bandolier bags used by French, English and American soldiers. This example (dating from the last few years) had a white ground with crosses and flags. It

wanted it for my collection. So, I got it down from the wall where it had hung for awhile. It was pretty dusty, but with a quick blow, the colors started to pop. I was sure that I knew what the piece was. It had to be northern Cheyenne. The palette seemed right, and we were only about 200 miles from their reservation. I asked, as I often do, where did it come from. The clerk told me that it was Sioux. I could not believe that it was Sioux, as that would have meant that it came from two states over. No way! It had to be Cheyenne, and arrogant cuss that I am, I told her so. She smiled and said that I could be right. The bag was already sold in my mind, and so I parted with the credit card, and it came home with me. All the way home, which was some hours away, I debated with myself about the bag. Was I right or just arrogant? So, when I got home, scarcely had

A Summer Of Romance: Michener Art Museum Courts “The Color Of The Moon: Lunar Painting In American Art”

Bodnar’s Auction Offers Rare Gem For Spider-Man Fans The Amazing Fantasy #15 To Sell Unreserved On June 20

Exhibit Coincides With 50th Anniversary Of Apollo 11 Mission Romance will fill the air this summer as “The Color of the Moon: Lunar Painting in American Art” lands at the Michener Art Museum. On view through Sunday, Sept. 8, “The Color of the Moon” showcases more than 60 paintings and works on paper that illuminate our eternal fascination with the moon and the long and enduring relationship between art and lunar science. The exhibition, featuring loans from museums and private collections throughout the U.S., coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission when American astronauts traveled across the skies to step onto the pitted surface of the moon in July 1969. “The Color of the Moon” traces the positions, places, and phases of the moon across more than 150 years of art and explores the Romanticism of our relationship with the moon. The display is presented in three broad groupings: “Popular Moon from Myth to

Destination,” ranging from mythological scenes of the goddess “Diana” by Samuel F. B. Morse to the Apollo 11 blast-off, painted by Jamie Wyeth as part of NASA’s art program; “The Romantic Moon” from the Hudson River School to 20th-century Modernists, featuring moonlit towers by Thomas Cole and a shimmering abstraction by Arthur Dove; and “The Moody Moon from Forest Glades to the Open Sea,” with paintings

by Edward Bannister, Ralph Blakelock, and George Inness, revealing the deep preoccupation with spirituality and moonlight at the end of the 19th century. The exhibition was cocurated by Laura Vookles, chair of the Hudson River Museum’s curatorial department, and Bartholomew F. Bland, executive director, Lehman College Art Gallery, the City University of New York, and co-organized by the Michener Art Museum and the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, N.Y. “The prevalence of the moon in American art speaks to its universal appeal; it is something that unites us across the globe. This attraction was explored by generations of artists who gazed upon the moon and later reaffirmed by astronauts looking back upon the fragile earth from space. Visitors will be awestruck by these views and by the beautiful paintings on display,” stated Vookles. “The magnificent works of

Bodnar’s Auction of Edison, N.J., is proud to offer unique, once-in-a-lifetime items, and comic book collectors will be in for a treat on Thursday, June 20, when Bodnar’s features a singleowner comic book collection, which includes a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15. The collection of silver age comics will be sold unreserved. Amazing Fantasy #15, best known to comic aficionados as the first time the great Stan Lee introduced Spider-Man, is the featured lot. The argument over who the most popular superhero of all time would certainly be a lengthy discussion; however, due to his humanity and relatability, the regular kid who got bit by a spider, the “friendly neighborhood” Spider-Man, is one superhero who has captured the hearts and minds of readers around the globe. Today, Spider-Man is globally recognized, and the story began with his debut appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15, written by Lee and illustrated by Steve Ditko. While this was the final issue of the Amazing Fantasy, it was made clear that Spider-Man would appear monthly in the Amazing Adventures, a series launched during the silver age of comic books that lasted from the 1950s to ‘60s. The

introduction of Spider-Man resonated with comic books fans, as the final Amazing Fantasy #15 issue was recognized as Marvel’s highestselling comic book at the time. “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is the next big installment in the Marvel cinematic franchise, and the title character remains

extremely popular. This copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 is expected to bring between $20,000 and $30,000 at the June 20 auction. The Bodnar’s sale will be held at the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center, 97 Sunfield Ave., Edison, N.J. For more information, call 732-210-6388.

Extremely Rare Map Of South Carolina And Part Of Georgia Acquired By Colonial Williamsburg Foundation The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has recently acquired a very rare copy of “A Map of South Carolina and a Part of Georgia” published in 1780 by William Faden based on a 1757 version made by the cartographers William Gerard De Brahm and published by Thomas Jefferys. Although other copies are known to exist, this example, which is in pristine condition with vibrant original color, is the first known to have become available in several decades. The large-scale map (about 4.5 feet tall by 4 feet wide) is a significantly revised version of the 1757 document by De Brahm, and when paired with this earlier version of the map (a copy already exists in the Colonial Williamsburg collection) the two maps tell a compelling story. Together they show a visual comparison about the extent to which the South Carolinians and Georgians settled the western frontiers of their colonies during the period between the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. “Colonial Williamsburg collects objects such as the Faden map not only for their inherent beauty, but for their intrinsic value as documents of past peoples, places and events,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the Foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation, and museums. “Remarkably well preserved, the Faden map will be used with other cartographic documents and three-dimensional objects to illustrate the movement of cultural groups from the seacoast to the southern

backcountry on the eve of the Revolution.” To best understand why this map is so extraordinary beyond its scarcity, one needs to first understand who made it, how it was originally intended for use and how it came to be revised over time, beginning with the original 1757 version. The story begins with the map’s cartographer, William Gerard De Brahm (1717-98). Born in southern Germany, he served as a military engineer in the Bavarian army until 1748 and thereafter was expelled from Bavaria for renouncing his Catholic faith in favor of Protestantism. With the encouragement of the Bishop of Augsburg, Samuel Urlsperger, he led a group of 156 German Protestants to settle in the Salzberger community of Ebenezer, Ga., in 1751. Shortly after his arrival, his skills as a trained surveyor and engineer were recognized in both Georgia and South Carolina, and by 1752 De Brahm was selected by Gov. James Glen of South Carolina to design and construct a system of fortifications for Charleston. Two years later, De Brahm was appointed Surveyor General of South Carolina. Realizing that there would be a war with France, the British Board of Trade requested that each colony supply maps of their topographical surveys, and the resulting map depicted geography that was vastly superior to any previous map of the region. De Brahm used his training as an engineer to create a map that aimed to assist colonists in settling the vast wilderness of the region. He meticulously and scientifically represented

“A Map of South Carolina and a part of Georgia,” published by William Faden (1750-1836) after William Gerard De Brahm (1718-ca. 1799) after Thomas Jeffreys (ca. 1710-71), Great Britain, England, London, 1780, has black and white line engraving with period hand color on laid paper. It was a museum purchase, 2019-59. details, such as settlements, land quality, climate, coastlines, waterways and the suitability of soil for agricultural growth. The map delineates plantation landscapes belonging to European settlers, while the cartouche depicts the enslaved Africans who would be forced to work the land. Native Americans’ lands in the interior of the Colonies are mentioned sporadically, but much of the map was left blank, suggesting endless possibilities for European settlement. Once all the information was compiled, De Brahm sent the map to the Board of Trade WEST VIRGINIA 06/22/19, KEYSER, SAT 1 PM, Estate Antiques & Collectibles featuring spectacular mirrored hall seat/tree, oak flat qall cupboard, Longeberger basket, early chest of drawers, fenton, art glass etc., 8018 Northwestern Turnpike (Rt 50), Knobley Mtn Auction

in England, which then approved it and commissioned cartographer, engraver and map seller Thomas Jeffreys, who served as geographer to King George III, to publish it. The resulting map, published in London on Oct. 20, 1757 (during the French and Indian War), illustrates the progress as well as the potential of the area. The second version of the map was published at the height of the Revolution. By 1778, the British had taken

Savannah, and in April 1780, once Charleston fell to the British, the focus of the war shifted to the Southern Colonies. Given the contemporary interest in the region, Thomas Jeffreys’ successor, William Faden, altered the 1757 copperplates with updated information on the region, publishing it in June 1780. The revisions were so major that some scholars consider the result to be virtually a new map. This new version included county names, roadways, new place names and settlements across the entire map, revealing the amount of new information that was gathered over a span of less than 20 years during a time when Britain was focused on expanding and populating its empire in North America and the backcountry of South Carolina was opened up for English settlement. The alterations were largely based on the surveys gathered by John Stuart, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Southern District from the 1760s to his death in 1779. Stuart frequently complained to royal officials in Britain that he lacked accurate maps of the backcountry to conduct his work, which frequently involved boundary disputes between Native Americans and settlers. He provided his findings to the Board of Trade, who, in turn, hired Faden to publish the updated version. The 1780 edition of the map reflects the westward movement of the population. “De Brahm’s map of South Carolina and Georgia was

viewed in the period, as it is today, as a remarkable achievement of eighteenthcentury cartography,” said Katie McKinney, Colonial Williamsburg’s assistant curator of maps and prints. “The blank space on the 1757 map is one of its most striking features, which never aimed to detail the backcountry landscape. It makes sense that when looking to publish a map on the region that Faden would use De Brahm’s map as a template to incorporate new information about these Southern colonies. Compared to the earlier version, this map will allow us to better interpret the westward movement of people and objects in the region throughout the 18th century.” The Georgetown Precinct reflects the extensive revisions made to the 1757 map on the 1780 map. The original map primarily illustrated topography and land use as evidenced by the detail, whereas the 1780 map focused on roadways, waterways, landowners and settlement. The 1780 map shows the intricate rivers and streams that made up the Pee Dee River. Georgetown Precinct thrived financially in the 18th century as home to some of the wealthiest indigo and rice planting operations in the low country, which relied on the work of enslaved laborers. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg remain open during construction of an entirely donor-funded $41.7 million expansion. Additional information about the Art Museums and Colonial Williamsburg as well as tickets are available online at www.colonialwilliamsburg.com, by calling 855-296-6627.

American Art Going Strong At Heritage Auctions With Eight Artist Auction Records N.C. Wyeth And Norman Rockwell Lead Record $7.2 Million Sale A pair of paintings by iconic American artist Newell Convers Wyeth combined to sell for more than $1.1 million, leading Heritage Auctions’ American Art Auction to a record $7,294,250 in total sales on May 3, with a sell-through rate of 90 percent by value. The final total for the sale, in which auction records were established for eight artists, was the largest ever for American art in Heritage Auctions’ history. “This is the highest-grossing American art sale in our company’s history,” stated vice president and American art director Aviva Lehmann. “With a 90 percent sellthrough rate by value, this auction is a clear indicator that Heritage Auctions is firmly rooted as a leader in the field of American art.” Multiple bidders lifted the result for Newell Convers Wyeth “I am Sir Launcelot du Lake, King Ban’s son of Benwick, and knight of the Round Table,” The Boy’s King Arthur: Sir Thomas Malory’s History of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table interior book illustration,

This illustration, the patriarch of what many consider “the first family of American Art,” shows the pivotal moment at which, after hours of battle, Sir Launcelot reveals his true identity to Sir Turquine, a move that required a fight to the death. This original was a highlight of the Andrew J. Sordoni collection, 12 of which were offered in the auction. The second painting by the same artist and the Sordoni collection was Newell Convers Wyeth’s “Mr. Cassidy ... Saw a crimson rider sweep down upon him ... Heralded by a blazing .41,” Bar-20 Range Yards, Part VII - Cassidy at Cactus, an interior illustration from The Outing Magazine, December 1906, which realized $555,000. The painting was a nod to the artist’s roots painting cowboys and Western pioneers and is significant as one of the earliest illustrations of the story of Hopalong Cassidy, the fictional cowboy created in 1904 by author Clarence E. Mulford. In this image, Slim Travennes, having been caught rustling

World On A String: All About Hazelle’s Marionettes Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson

Adventurous youngsters could construct their own marionettes with the Hazelle hobby kit. This particular kit came with everything needed to assemble “Teto the Clown,” the Hazelle company mascot.

Hazelle’s award-winning artwork The mistress of marionettes herself, graced an early marionette box. Hazelle Hedges Rollins. on the pursuit of puppetry in 1932. A recent graduate of Kansas University with a degree in fine arts, Hazelle was pondering a career in fashion design, until a visit from an 11-year-old neighbor boy. Donald Newlin had just received an Italian-made marionette and was eager to show it off. He also had a request. One marionette was nice, but two would be much nicer. That way, he could put on shows. And who better to come up with a companion puppet than his artistic neighbor? Hazelle was intrigued by the creative challenge. Her first marionette, “The King’s Jester,” was a hit. Donald and his brother, Dick, began putting on shows for local schools, with Hazelle painting the

backgrounds, and, of course, coming up with more marionettes as the scripts became more complex. The tiny troupe moved on to paid appearances at birthday parties, toy stores, and special events (a Kansas City auto show hired them for 45 performances.) For Hazelle Hedges, a career was born. Next up, teaching puppet-making at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, followed by an invitation to display her wares at the 1935 New York Toy Fair and study with famed NYC-based puppeteer Tony Sarg. With a bundle of Toy Fair orders in hand, Hazelle then returned to Kansas City, determined to succeed as a marionette maker. What began as a one-woman, at-home enterprise quickly transformed into a full-scale operation, “Hazelle’s Marionettes,” with its own fully-staffed factory in

More durable “Tenite” plastic eventually replaced composition as the base material for Hazelle marionettes. downtown Kansas City. What accounts for the company’s amazing success during the height of the Depression? First off, Hazelle’s Marionettes were something new. As the ads put it, they were “dolls that come to life.” And, they were affordable, as imported marionettes were out of the price range of most Depression-strapped budgets. They were also child-size, unlike professional marionettes. An easy-to-use “airplane control stick” handled the movements of legs, arms, head, and (eventually) mouth. Most importantly, Hazelle Hedges was a tireless promoter, willing to make personal appearances and give demonstrations at every opportunity. Following her 1941 marriage to John “Woody” Rollins, Hazelle was free to focus solely on

(He spearheaded the company’s move to “Tenite” plastic for puppet heads and body parts, replacing the previous, much less durable composition pieces.) With the advent of TV, puppet superstars emerged on such shows as “Kukla, Fran and Ollie,” “Howdy Doody,” “The Shari Lewis Show,” “Captain Kangaroo,” and “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.” At Hazelle, business boomed. By the 1960s, over 250,000 “Hazelle’s Marionettes were produced annually. Hazelle and Woody sold their company in 1975, and the last “Hazelle’s Marionettes” were released in 1984. For baby boomers, however, the memories of mastering those “aircraft controls,” and keeping their eight strings from tangling, live on. And, at the Puppetry Arts Institute in Independence, Continued on page 18

On their way to the Emerald City? These are Hazelle’s interpretations of “Wizard of Oz” favorites Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion.

Sharing display space with Hazelle marionettes at the Puppetry Arts Institute are equally fascinating works by famed puppeteer Pady Blackwood. Among Blackwood’s many credits is lead puppeteer for the 1970s revival of “The Howdy Doody Show.”

Some things come with strings attached. At the Puppetry Arts Institute (PAI) of Independence, Mo., that’s a good thing. The PAI is home to the Hazelle Rollins Puppet Museum, housing the masterful marionettes created by the premiere puppet-maker of the mid-20th century. For baby boomers, each Christmas often meant a new Hazelle marionette under the tree. Others will certainly recall Bill Baird’s marionette squad romping through “The Lonely Goatherd” in “The Sound of Music.” But, at PAI you’re in for an eye-opener. Imagine a selection of fine and decorative art whose quality is so superior, it all might easily have come from mythical Downton Abbey or the grandest of Newport estates. That’s the impression collectors might get while browsing through Morphy’s Tuesday and Wednesday, June 18 and 19, auction catalog. The selection of 2,500-plus lots would please even the most discerning art connoisseur. There are so many highlights within the immense array of Tiffany Studios and European cameo glass lamps featured in the opening session, collectors will find themselves spoiled for choice. The ultimate embodiment of Tiffany artistry, this show-stopping lamp is expected to make $120,000-$160,000. “The Tiffany name represents the crème de la crème of the American art glass tradition,” said Morphy Auctions’ president, Dan Morphy. “More than a century has passed since Tiffany Studios first produced its spectacular lamps, and they’re still in a class of their own. The Frick Collection is presenting a temporary installation of the work of sculptor Edmund de Waal, a rich juxtaposition of new site-specific objects displayed in the main galleries of the museum alongside works from the permanent collection. Acclaimed as both an artist and writer, de Waal is known for his installations of porcelain vessels housed in minimal structures, often created in response to collections and archives or the history of a specific place. His approach is particularly suited to the setting of a museum like the Frick, and this project marks the first such installation done by the artist in the United States. The presentation, curated by Charlotte Vignon, the Frick’s curator of Decorative Arts, is
