A fan of comic books as a child, he later began seriously collecting them and turned his passion into a series of pop culture businesses. Over the years, Geppi amassed one of the largest individual collections of vintage comic books and pop culture artifacts in the world. Geppi will continue to be an active collector and will be considering other donations to the Library of Congress in the future. “I view this newly established connection to the Library of Congress as the beginning of a long-term relationship,” said Geppi. The library holds more than 140,000 issues of about 13,000 comic book titles, dating back to the 1930s. The collection includes many firsts and some of the most important comics in history, including the first comic book sold on newsstands; the first series featuring Batman and other iconic characters; and All Star Comics #8, which introduced fans to Wonder Woman. The Library also holds a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, which tells the origin story of SpiderMan, and the original artwork that Steve Ditko created for that issue. The Geppi Collection expands and enriches this strong foundation and fills gaps in specific issues. The Serial and Government Publications Division maintains one of the most extensive

Event To Be Held July 26, 27, And 28 To the average person, Flow Blue and Mulberry may sound like odd names for china, but this variety has been around since the 1800s with thousands of various patterns. A highlight for specialized collectors and enthusiasts of this type of ironstone china is the annual international convention of the Flow Blue International Collectors’ Club. This year, the Quad Cities will be the host destination for the club’s convention on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 26, 27, and 28, at the Isle Casino Hotel in Bettendorf, Iowa. Located on the Mississippi River, the Quad Cities is a region comprised of Moline/East Moline and Rock Island in Illinois, Davenport

and Bettendorf in Iowa, and surrounding communities. For those with an interest

in Flow Blue or Mulberry china and a curiosity about its patterns, potters and history, all are encouraged and welcome to attend. Attendees must be members of the Flow Blue International Collectors’ Club and may join via www.flowblue.org. As part of the convention, attendees will tour the Quad Cities, including a tour of the John Deere Harvester combine factory, a luncheon cruise on the Celebration

Belle Riverboat, tours of the Butterwort Center & DeereWiman House, and a visit to the John Deere Pavilion. Other convention activities include an information-packed First-Timers seminar, educational presentations, excellent buying opportunities, a special show of rare and unusual pieces, and a quality 300-lot auction of only Flow Blue and Mulberry items. About Flow Blue and Mulberry With patterns numbering in the thousands, Flow Blue and Mulberry ironstone accommodates the taste of every collector. Flow Blue and Mulberry complements all types of collecting interests. Why did such a variety of patterns appear on items like dishes, chamber sets and garden accessories? The rapid expansion of the British Empire in the 1800s into Africa and Asia inspired the imaginations of common people and inspired travel for the wealthy. The unusual fabrics, spices, artifacts, and porcelains that returned with travelers created a longing for faraway places and exotic things. English potters seized the romantic dream of travel abroad and placed it in reach of all classes of people as fascinating yet functional items for the home. Potters discovered that transfer printing in light blues, greens, pinks and browns

amazing study in behaviors. It is where everyone competes to buy. He who has the most gets the prize. Pretty basic, but also predicated upon a lot of human behaviors. It is also about knowledge (for collectors), nostalgia (for family), and entertainment (for the public). Understanding those motives is really about 99 percent of the auction game. So to answer the nagging questions, what happened to the stuff? • The piano top ended up being a great display piece for my mother’s first booth in an antiques show. • The Currier and Ives sold at auction 10 years later for about $1 more than we paid for it. I think the tramp art frame was the key piece and the print

see something going cheap, and do you hold or do you bid? Well, for the Seiberts, it was a case where we had to bid! And what did we get? • A piano top and four legs • A hideous religiousthemed Currier and Ives print that we bid against each other to get • A wooden box • A 1960s console television • And we nearly got a Victorian pump organ. I think we spent the princely sum of maybe $100 at the sale, which was way too much for what we got. It was definitely a critical learning experience for us. Like riding a bike, one goes to an auction, and if he or she is smart enough, he or she can learn a whole lot by watching and

At dinner recently, we were talking about our first auction experiences. For Kim, it was going to Conestoga with her parents and accidentally bidding on something. For me, it was a Haar’s on-site sale in Harrisburg, when I was around 18. Both experiences were great lessons on how auctions work and probably on what not to do. For me, it was a Saturday spring sale with household contents that probably had not been touched in years. The widower had died, and the estate was selling everything as is. We showed up and of course had to figure out how to get a bidding number. We forgot chairs, so we stood in the heat and watched the sale. I think for most people, auctions are always about

quickly became clear that British housewives found Flow Blue with its vivid cobalt hues and Mulberry in a range from chocolaty browns to moody purples less desirable than their American counterparts. Adapting to this observation, potteries exported much of their Flow Blue and Mulberry to the American market for use as everyday dishware. In homage to this American love of Flow Blue and Mulberry, the Flow Blue International Collectors’ Club became a reality in 1986. Its stated purpose

ongoing commitment to arts, crafts, culture, and tourism, the 2018 festival will feature 160 juried artists, live music on five stages, local food vendors, art-making and interactive demonstrations. On Sunday, the Thompson Bucks County Classic will roll into town with six bike races involving professionals, amateurs, children, and historical high wheel bicycles. Home to 8,000 residents as well as the James A. Michener Art Museum, the Mercer Museum, Fonthill

Castle, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works museum, the County Theater, and the Bucks County Civil War Library and Museum, as well as a robust array of galleries, restaurants, and locally owned shops and boutiques, Doylestown is nationally recognized as a destination town. In 2017, Philadelphia magazine named Doylestown “best fun suburban

town,” while Good Housekeeping listed Doylestown as the “most underrated attraction” in Pennsylvania. In 2013, Travel + Leisure magazine called Doylestown one of “America’s (top 20) favorite towns.” While Doylestown Arts Festival director Paul Boger is expecting large crowds, he emphasizes that the organizers plan very carefully to ensure there is plenty of parking, access, space, and amenities so that attendees feel welcomed and comfortable. “Our mission is to communicate to festival visitors the ever-present hospitality and warmth of Doylestown, while at the same time celebrating the region’s artists and artistic heritage,” said Boger. “We encourage everyone from near and far who has any interest in the arts, music, community, or sightseeing to attend this remarkable festival and to experience the energizing ambiance of

Doylestown. Christine Hensel Triantos, director of marketing and communications at the James A. Michener Art Museum, the cultural partner of the Doylestown Arts Festival, said the annual event amplifies the regional commitment to arts and culture and brings new audiences to the Michener, a leading American art museum housed in a dramatically transformed prison in Doylestown. “We are always delighted to welcome new visitors and embrace this chance to introduce new audiences to our museum as well as to the rich cultural and artistic fabric of our small but very special town,” stated Hensel Triantos. The Doylestown Arts Festival is made possible by a small volunteer committee of Discover Doylestown and is presented by the Thompson Organization. Major sponsors of the Doylestown Arts Festival include Steaz, Berkshire Hathaway, and Penn Community Bank. Grist Mill Antiques Center To Celebrate Manufacturing Heritage Of Trenton Trenton Pottery To Be Highlighted In Special Sales Display “Trenton Makes. The World Takes,” reads the iconic sign on the bridge that spans the Delaware River for over 100 years. Today, visitors may think the motto is a bit misplaced, as the once thriving factory town is not what it once was. Trenton, N.J., played a major role in American history. It was in the Battle of Trenton, when the Colonials slipped across the Delaware River on Christmas night to surprise the Hessian army for Gen. Washington’s first major victory. Trenton’s industrial roots date a century before the Revolutionary War when Mahlon Stacy first built a gristmill in 1679. What followed was

the development of one of the most productive regions in the colonies, which remained so as the fledgling United States grew, and even into the beginning of the 20th century. Everything from Revolutionary weapons to flour was produced in the area, arming and feeding Washington’s group of patriots. In the 1800s, industry began to boom, largely due to the increased means of importing raw materials from western regions of the country and due to exporting the items produced via canals and railroads. While Trenton became known as a center of iron and steel (the oversized bathtub

for President Howard Taft was custom-made in one of the local factories), a plethora of pottery manufacturers began to move into the area to take advantage of the wealth of resources surrounding the city. In the mid-1800s, William Young moved from New York to found a company that introduced whiteware to America. Everyday items, as well as those for decorative use, were produced by Speeler, Taylor & Bloor, later renamed the Trenton Pottery Company. Scammell Pottery, in operation

until the 1950s, was known for their made-to-order restaurant ware as well as the china used by the B&O Railroad.

High quality porcelain that rivaled china from England was produced by Greenwood Pottery. Glasgow Pottery, the most successful manufacturer

in the mid-1800s, was known for their design and production of commemorative teacups and saucers. As the Industrial Revolution grew, Belleek began to manufacture its delicate fine china in Trenton and companies like Fulper, Stangl, and Lenox, among others, began creating works of art that are still treasured and collected today. This month, Grist Mill Antiques Center is recalling the days when Trenton was one of the manufacturing capitals of the country. Stop by to see their

special sales display that showcases Trenton’s finest achievements. This multi-dealer shop is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The last Wednesday of the month, it holds a scavenger hunt with a prize being awarded to the person who finds the most items on the list. Lists are given out at 5 p.m. Light refreshments are served. Also, each week the store has a 25 percent off sale on a special category. They are located at 127 Hanover St. in Pemberton, N.J. For additional information, call 609-726-1588 or email theplace@gristmill antiques.com.

The Nearly Extinct Formal Dining Room “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute When I teach my Home Downsizing Program, I often ask the class this question: “I’ve never been into your home, but let me guess. You either have, or had, a formal dining room. In that dining room you have an extension table with leaves, 4-6-8-12 chairs, a sideboard, and a hutch that is either opentop or with glass doors. On the top hutch shelves are your items of pride, including Limoges china, Waterford crystal, Hummel or Lladro figurines, family mementos, and other similar items. Hidden beneath

is a set of rarely-used china, platters, candles and candelabras, napkins and napkin ring holders, flatware, silverplate, and wedding gifts from many years ago, etc.” “You’ve been in my home!,” the class jokes. As my generation ages, we’re typically selling our dining room contents as we prepare to move into smaller quarters. But the younger generation is not buying. They could care less about the formal dining experience, and many don’t even have dining rooms. So when you’re ready to sell your formal dining room
