Lititz Historical Foundation To Host 57th Annual Antiques Show

AAN Current News

Quality Country Show To Be Held June 28 And 29 At Warwick Middle School This Pairpoint Bird of Paradise lamp on the server in the dining room with a leaded glass window hanging behind it will be sold.

The 1792 Johannes Mueller house is at 145 E. Main St., Lititz, Pa., and the home of the Lititz Historical Foundation. It will be open the weekend of the antiques show. There will be a lot of great Americana for sale at the 57th annual Lititz Antiques Show in Lititz, Pa., on Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29. Hosted since 1962 by the Lititz Historical Foundation as a fundraiser for the historic Johannes Mueller House erected in 1792, the show has evolved into a venerable, favorite event ushering in the summer antiquing season in southcentral Pennsylvania. The Lititz show is a great venue to do eclectic comparative shopping. Fifty-two country dealers from seven states will gather at Warwick Middle School to stage their antiques for sale. Dealers and collectors will find dozens of categories and thousands of items, including (but not limited to) weathervanes, Christmas and holiday items, country furniture in original paint, wood carvings, butter prints, whirligigs, redware, signs, blue decorated stoneware,

primitives, country smalls, textiles from primitive to sophisticated, wrought-iron implements and lighting, decoys, treen, hooked rugs, fraktur, tramp art, and make do’s, just to name a few things. Perennial Lititz show shoppers know just where to find their favorite dealers and make a beeline to their stands, to decide quickly on purchases and then continue to shop the show. Lititz show dealers have staked out their spaces over the years, many having exhibited at the quality show for decades. Show dates and times will be Friday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Warwick Middle School is located at 401 Maple St., Lititz, Pa. Parking is directly behind the high school. For further information, call David Geiger at 814-720-6681 or visit www.lititzantiqueshow.org.

Antiques & Auction News — June 21, 2019 - - 3

By Shawn Surmick Regular readers of this column will know that I am not a fan of book reviews of work dealing with the antiques and collectibles trade. In fact, since I have been writing this column, I’ve only done one. It was for Maureen Stanton’s incredible book, “Killer Stuff and Tons of Money,” which is easily among the best books ever written on the subject of the trade. If you have not read it, I strongly suggest you do. That said, a recent trip to my local Barnes & Noble bookstore caused me to change my proverbial tune. It seems that almost every year the section of books devoted to the antiques and collectibles trade has been magically shrinking in size. At this particular Barnes & Noble, the subject now encompasses only one full bookshelf, which, given the depth of the entire collectibles market, would be the equivalent of having only half a shelf devoted to history or world affairs! I have commented in past articles on the sad decline of the published word encompassing our trade. Collectors, enthusiasts, and casual connoisseurs are just not buying books on the subject of antiques and collectibles due

to the rise in the amount of readily available free information on the internet. Ironically, a lot of the information on the internet is wrong and misleading, and all collectors and investors should have ample quantities of published and vetted works on hand in their actual home library. This is of course not to say that every book written and published within the antiques and collectibles trade should be taken as factual and correct, but most published works are at least vetted and the authors do have a sense of obligation to state the truth because their name is appearing on the work. This leads me to where we are now. Another groundbreaking book has been written on a topic, and I want to be sure that you know about it. This time the topic centers around numismatics and, ironically, golf. The book in question was published by Whitman Publishing and is titled “Pleasure & Profit: 100 Lessons for Building and Selling a Collection of Rare Coins: The Second Edition,” written by Robert W. Shippee. The author has two stated loves in life. One involves playing golf, and the other involves investing in rare U.S. classic coins. The concept of the book is quite simple: The author dispenses his priceless advice for what he looked for

when building his rare collection of classic coins while at the same time telling his readers exactly what he paid for the coins and eventually sold them for at auction. The brilliance of his advice is that it is engulfed (pun intended) in light golfing references and troupes that anyone could easily relate to. Some of the brief stories and lessons stated in this book are not just about numismatics and golf, but simply about life itself. The book follows Shippee on a fantastic journey through bidding at well-known numismatic auctions from the likes of Heritage Auctions and Stacks & Bowers. It covers in immense detail what a buyer should be looking for when buying classic gold coins of the late 18th and 19th centuries as well as later silver coinage of the early 20th century. The book is divided up by denomination and series, so if you are a reader who wants to just quickly glance at, say, silver dollars or double eagle gold coins, you can do so. Every coin entry shows the actual price he originally paid and the amount sold when he finally consigned the collection. This is by far the second most important piece of information contained in the book. The first is the excellent commentary of what buyers should look for when they are building their own collections

to avoid some of the costly mistakes the author made in some instances. Astute readers of this column will also know that the version I am recommending is the second edition. This version was released this year. The original version was released in 2015. The second edition features additional valuable information not included in the first. Some of this information included is the incredible comparison article that compares rare coins to the growth of the stock market. This addition and expert commentary add a lot of value to an already near-perfect book, and if you happen to own the original edition, in my opinion it is well worth buying again for the extra commentary. Collectors and investors of other facets of the antiques and collectibles trade who do not collect or invest in coins can also get something out of this book. Due to the nature of how this book was written, it is a great economic primer for anyone who wishes to invest in collectible market. In fact, this book is quite possibly the greatest book ever written on the subject of investing in rare classic U.S. coins and, quite ironically, in my opinion that was not the author’s intent. His intent was making every numismatist a better and more savvy buyer.

casual coin collectors need to learn what makes a coin aesthetically appealing and what to look for when buying to maximize value. It is because of this alone that I recommend it, and I sincerely hope that you too will join the author through his collecting (and golfing) journey.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

Sadly, this book is not without some minor yet valid criticism. Due to the nature of the rare coin market and the fact that it is one of the most established and popular collecting fields within the greater antiques trade, coin prices showcased in this book are well over $1,000 each, with many above the $5,000 and $10,000 range. As such, younger, novice numismatics who purchase this book may be disappointed to learn that they cannot afford most, if any, of the items featured in this book. That said, I still think the lessons in this book far outweigh that fact, as even

As the summer solstice approaches, the Grist Mill Antiques Center has created a great outdoors sales display. Wildlife art creates the setting for vintage cameras and binoculars, decoys, antique fishing gear, and a rare fishing longbow by Rogers Archery of Philadelphia, with a reel by Turner Bros. of Wellington, Ohio. Everything we love about recalling happy summer memories can be found on the shelves. Antique seaside photographs along with vintage sand pails and toys remind us of the joys of going to the ocean. A vintage croquet set, baseball collectibles and picnic baskets recall family outings, and plenty of items are available to decorate a seasonal cottage or cabin. Stop in and reminisce with us.

“It’s Alive! Classic Horror And Sci-Fi Art From The Kirk Hammett Collection” Features Cinema Art And Prized Memorabilia

“Nosferatu,” ca. 1931, was produced by Prana Film, Germany, and printed in Spain, the lithograph is 42.25-by-29 1/8 inches. Courtesy of the Kirk Hammett Horror and Sci-Fi Memorabilia Collection. of the times in which they were created,” according to Arlene Gehmacher, ROM curator of Canadian Paintings, Prints and Drawings. “Some of the posters are riveting. They can provoke, excite, and enthrall, reflecting but also shaping the visible and psychological fears of an individual, community, or nation.” Hammett has dedicated the last three decades to creating one of the world’s most

important cinema-art collections and credits it as a primary source of inspiration for his own musical creativity. “I got into the business of collecting horror, which is really not a business at all, a long time ago. I think it’s become my midnight calling or maybe my lifetime obsession. I guess some would say obsession, some may say occupation, and others would say it’s just plain insanity,” stated Hammett. “It is very exciting for me to have Toronto be the second stop on our quest to bring my collection to everyone who is genuinely interested in these horror movie posters, props, and memorabilia. Canada is a great country, Toronto is an amazing city, and I’m honored to be able to start crossing borders with my collection at the Royal Ontario Museum.” “We’d be lying if we said that we didn’t scream in excitement when this opportunity was presented to us. Working with the ROM has been nothing short of incredible, and we’re so excited for ‘It’s Alive’ to open in July. What a perfect exhibition to align with our brand,” said Vanessa Azzoli, marketing manager, Cosmo Music. “It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection” is a separately ticketed exhibition. ROM members enjoy free admission and exclusive opportunities to experience ROM exhibitions and programs. The exhibit will then travel to the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, S.C., where it will be presented from Feb. 13,

2020, to May 17, 2020. About the ROM Founded in 1914, the Royal Ontario Museum showcases art, culture, and nature from around the world and across the ages. Among the top 10 cultural institutions in North America, Canada’s largest and most comprehensive museum is home to a world-class collection of 13 million artworks, cultural objects, and natural history specimens, featured in 40 gallery and exhibition spaces. As the country’s preeminent field research institute and an international leader in new discoveries, the ROM plays a vital role in advancing our understanding of the artistic, cultural, and natural world.

On Saturday, July 13, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Canada, will unveil the Canadian-exclusive presentation of “It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection,” with presenting sponsor Cosmo Music. This otherworldly and imaginative exhibition features a trove of rare artwork and collectible objects amassed over decades by collector Kirk Hammett, lead guitarist of Metallica. Exploring the interplay of creativity, emotion and popular culture, the exhibition includes more than 100 pieces from 20th-century cinema ranging from “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1921), to “Alien” (1979). “It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection” is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Mass., and will be on view at the ROM through Jan. 5, 2020. “Horror and sci-fi are among the most versatile, dynamic and enduring genres of cinema,” says Josh Basseches, ROM director and CEO. “Acting as a mirror for societal fears, these films and the accompanying artwork reflect the collective cultural anxieties of the time. This evocative exhibition deepens our understanding of the evolution of cinema art and its relationship to culture.” “It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Art Collection” features rare cinema posters from the 1920s to 1980, including the only surviving copy of the original 1931 “Frankenstein” poster, as well as one-of-a-kind electric guitars from Hammett’s collection and authentic movie costumes with life-size mannequins. The exhibition traces how, decade by decade, horror

Haven’t I Seen You Somewhere Before, Maybe “Antiques Roadshow”? This naturalistic model of a tortoise with a snail passenger atop its shell carries a date cypher for 1878 and is recorded in the factory archives as shape #629. It was consigned to the British auction house Sworders’ Fine Interiors sale, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, June 25 and 26, by a local lady who, only last month, spotted a similar teapot while watching an episode of the BBC’s “Antiques Roadshow.” Surprised by its potential value, she decided to take her own Minton Tortoise, which she inherited from a great aunt, to Sworders for appraisal. The company’s

specialists were delighted to examine the handsome fellow and suggested an auction estimate of £1,500£2,500 ($1,900-$3,200). English majolica, which takes its name from Italian tin-glazed earthenwares often called “maiolica,” was first displayed by Minton to much acclaim at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Production boomed for four decades, but as the 20th century ushered in the Edwardian era, Minton’s quintessentially “Victorian” forms fell out of favor. By 1900, the company’s production had all but died out. Today, it is a different

In no particular hurry to reach its destination, this wonderfully decorative Victorian teapot was probably the center of attention at many a fashionable garden party, but now it’s headed for the spotlight at Sworders auction house. The realistically detailed Tortoise is from a series of majolica teapots produced by Minton, one of the premier British ceramics factories of the second half of the 19th century. Minton’s range of whimsical animal-form teapots also included a Vulture and Snake, Cockerel, Spiny Fish, and a Cat and Mouse on a Flatiron.

Magic: The Gathering Cards, Including Complete Alpha, Beta And Arabian Nights Sets, Will Be Sold By Weiss Auctions Sets Contain Many BGS-Graded Examples A collection of significant, early “Magic: The Gathering” cards, including complete Alpha, Beta and Arabian Nights sets, with many BGSgraded examples in each, are the expected centerpiece lots in an auction slated for Wednesday, June 26, at 10 a.m., EST, by Weiss Auctions, online and in the firm’s gallery, 74 Merrick Road, Lynbrook, N.Y. “Magic: The Gathering” cards are currently popular and highly sought after by collectors. A few graded standout cards include Alpha Black Lotus, 8.5; Alpha Mox Pearl, 9.5; Beta Time Vault, 10.0; Beta

Black Lotus, 9.0; and Beta Earthquake, 9.5, among many others graded at 9.0 and 9.5. “Magic: The Gathering” cards were first released in 1993. The initial sets were the limited Alpha and Beta sets of cards, before the unlimited format was introduced. The first expansion, Arabian Nights, was released in December of 1993, just after the limited editions were printed and sold out. “The Black Lotus is one of the most sought-after cards for Magic collectors,” said Philip Weiss of Weiss Auctions. “Its ability to be played for free and then

tapped in order to gain three mana of any one color made it powerful and popular, and it was almost immediately banned from official play. These three sets combined could bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars.” “It’s important to point out that the cards will be offered as sets and not broken up into multiple lots. This gives investors a rare chance to get a complete set in one fell swoop,” stated Weiss. In addition to live bidding in the gallery, there will also be online bidding available, via the two platforms Proxibid.com and Invaluable.com. Telephone and absentee bids will also be accepted. The auction will also feature a fine selection of linenbacked posters, to include a scarce Fairy Sisters poster; an 1880s Allen and Ginter nonsports card collection with more than 600 pieces, including cards, boxes and more; signed lithographs with a wide assortment of important artists featured; rare and outof-print books; Hollywood photographs; and American

Morphy Auctions Announces Partnership With Beinfeld Productions, Acquires Stake In Las Vegas Antique Arms Show 57-Year-Old Annual Firearms Show Draws International Contingent

Here is floor action at a past edition of the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show. Image courtesy Morphy Auctions in place, Paul Balfour stressed that the show’s winning formula will not change. “The show will continue to be held at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, and Karen and I will continue to manage it as we always have, listening to the dealers and working with them, and doing everything we can to make it a show that exhibitors will gladly travel halfway around the world to attend,” said Balfour. “Paul and I are very happy that Morphy’s has become a partner in the show,” stated Karen. “We’ve gotten to know Dan from his years of setting up at the show, and he is an upfront, honest individual. The entire Morphy Auctions team is extremely professional. Their cross-promotion and marketing abilities will only strengthen the show’s quality and make it even more successful than it already is.” In its 57-year history, the LVAAS has attracted numerous Hollywood personalities, legislators, and other notable

figures. The many historically important guns that have been displayed at the show include the finest known antique Colt single-action Buntline Special revolver, with original skeleton shoulder stock, which was exhibited in 2016 by Carol Watson’s Orange Coast Auctions, and General Ulysses S. Grant’s

magnificent Civil War-era Remington revolvers, whose whereabouts had been unknown for over a century. Valued at $1.5 million, the circa-1863 “Lost Remingtons” made their public debut at the January 2018 LVAAS at Greg Martin’s booth. The first edition of the show to reflect the new

collaboration between Morphy Auctions and Beinfeld Productions is slated for Feb. 28 and 29 and March 1, 2020. The dates are later in the year than usual due to a scheduling conflict at the venue. “Ordinarily the show is held in mid- to late January. It will revert to that timeframe in 2021,” said Morphy.

pleasure to work with. We know the type of people they are, and they’re a big part of why the show is so popular with buyers and sellers alike.” Launched in 1962 by Las Vegas gun collector and dealer Harry Mann (d. 1962), LVAAS is the oldest continuously operating trade or specialty show of any type in Las Vegas, far outlasting even the longrunning showroom extravaganzas at major casino hotels. The annual event is a calendar highlight for antique, vintage and out-of-production firearms enthusiasts, attracting exhibitors from throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Japan and China. The Balfours assumed the show’s daily operations and management responsibilities from their brother-in-law, Wally Beinfeld (1929-2013), in 1998, and committed to honoring Wally’s and the show’s legacy. Dan Morphy, president of Morphy Auctions, has recently announced the Pennsylvania company’s newly formed partnership with Beinfeld Productions, producers of the industry-leading Las Vegas Antique Arms Show (LVAAS). “We’re very excited about our new association with Beinfeld,” said Morphy. “Their vast show-promotion experience combined with Morphy’s marketing expertise will take the Las Vegas show to another level, both in terms of attendance and the number of dealers participating. Our common goal is to help grow the antique and collectible firearms industry.” “Morphy’s has set up at the Vegas show for several years now. We increased our presence there after our 2017 acquisition of James D. Julia Inc., a company that was a powerful force in the antique firearms market,” explained Morphy. “Following that purchase, which led us to shift a major part of our marketing focus to the antique and collectible gun market, we felt a logical next step would be to look into a partnership with Beinfeld Productions. The process of achieving that goal has been a very easy and pleasant one for us. Over the years, Morphy’s team, which includes 15 firearms experts, has gotten to know the Vegas show’s managers, Paul and Karen Balfour, and they’ve always been an absolute
