Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Awards Excellence At Industry Conference 73rd Annual Event Deemed A Success For Organization The PA Auctioneers Association (PAA) held a successful conference on May 10 through 13, despite the annual event being pushed from its usual January date. The group’s 73rd annual conference did, however, look a bit different, especially without the PA Farm Show hosting its popular auctioneer competition. There were close to 150 attendees at this conference, showing the dedication of so many members and affiliates of the organization. Being in an association is important, and “If you are going to be part of an association, be involved, don’t just pay your dues,” said past president Jeff Pennington of New Castle. The PAA is one of the largest auctioneer associations in the country. The membership consists of auctioneers, trade members, and other auction professionals who are passionate about the industry and the auction method of selling. This event included the gathering of these auction professionals, including auctioneers, apprentices, auctioneer students, support personnel, vendors, and presenters. A well-attended trade show enabled attendees to speak with such vendors as E.R. Munro & Company, All Points Sound, Auction Time/Auction Flex/HiBid, CRS

Recycling Services, Greater Giving, Mid Atlantic Community Papers Association, Shipping Saint, United Merchant Processing Assoc., Wavebid, and Proxibid, many of whom were sponsors for the event. All had access to many educational seminars during the course of the conference that will allow them to better serve their buyers, sellers and the industry as a whole. The PAA focuses on educating the auction professional. Continuing education points were available to the many auctioneers who maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses held in other states requiring education. The 13 presenters from around the country offered a wealth of information, including the new PAA Legal Counsel Anthony D. Cox Jr. of Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote, PC; Greg Drake of 360 Tour Designs; Matthew Fridge of auctionpromarketing.com; Larry Oxenham of American Society for Asset Protection; Erik Rasmus of Rasmus Auctions; James Weishedel of HR Enhancement Solutions; and PAA members and specialists Matt Hostetter, Marjorie Hartman, Mike Keller, Patrick Morgan, Jeff Pennington, Jason Reed, and J. Meryl Stoltzfus. The PAA annually hosts the PA auctioneer competition at the

competitor was Kylee Hostetter of Beaver Falls. Several awards are given out to honor some of those who have dedicated their careers to the industry and who have made the industry better for all. Two auctioneers were inducted into the PAA Hall of Fame. This award is given to an individual based on integrity, honesty, high moral character, acute fairness, and distinction, and is bestowed on an auctioneer each year who, over the course of his or her profession, has committed him or herself to fostering excellence in the industry. The 2021 Hall of Fame inductees were Kerry Pae, originally from Milroy, but now residing out of state, and John Fry of Ephrata. The recipient of the prestigious award of Auctioneer of the Year was awarded to Mark Ferry of Latrobe. The nominations for this award are chosen by auctioneers in his/her area, and the winner is selected by his/her statewide peers. Ferry has shown excellent leadership, high ethical standards, willingness to share with others, participation in community affairs, and outstanding contributions to the PAA and the auction profession. Traditionally awarded during the conference but awarded earlier in the year, several auction companies garnered awards in the firstplace categories within the PAA Advertising/Marketing Contest, including Hostetter Auctioneers, Kimberly K Auction, Patrick Morgan Auction Services, Lane Ryan Auctions, Max Spann Auctions Co., Dotta Auction Co., Sanford Alderfer Continued on page 2

During the Victorian era and beyond, homes were heated with wood, oil, or coal stoves. These stoves, of course, had to have a vent pipe to the outside, or to other rooms in the house, which created a hole in the wall, called a flue. What happens when a vent pipe is removed for good and the wall isn’t replastered? Some inventive soul came up with the flue cover, which became an artistic covering. At first, many old houses just had plain metal grills, or metal plates that may have been decorated. As the years went on, more and more flue covers were painted with or without glass coverings. These flue covers included a chain so the cover could be hung on the wall Continued on page 11

Michael Vienneau scrimshaws only one panbone (whale’s jaw) per year. His 2001 panoramic harbor view characterizes the island’s economic and cultural swing from a gritty, seafaring community, with its camels, whaling bark and shipyards, to a chic summer colony’s iconic skyline, her steamship ferry and the Yacht Club’s 1926 inaugurated Rainbow Fleet. Decorators and collectors will note Regency and Georgian tea caddies, rare Steuben animal forms including a clear crystal dragon designed by Bernard X. Wolff amongst 19th century blue and white Canton, Famille Rose and Rose Medallion porcelains, Majolica, Inuit soapstone carvings, doorstops, Diamond and Baratta for Stark needlepoint carpets and hand-knotted wool oriental rugs. World-renowned local handicraft first made by sailors stationed on the Nantucket Lightship and Nantucket baskets made by veterans Stephen Gibbs, Sherwin Boyer, and Jose Reyes will be sold. A William Sevrens nest of seven round swing handle baskets will be offered among other works by contemporary makers. With its early 19th-century architecture, cobbled village lanes and historic Main Street mansions, Nantucket, once the whaling capitol of the world, has a 140-year tradition as a summer colony of sea salt-sprayed, privet hedged estates which embody a truly unique material culture. “Nantucket Island has long housed a treasure trove,” said Rafael Osona. This Week: I Paid Too Much

Probably every collector, and certainly every dealer, has made that statement at one point or another in their career. The heat of an auction, the insecurity of someone else looking at the same item in a shop, the lack of knowledge about an item have led us all to buy items for more than they are worth. Some antiques will catch up in price and, with enough time, will reach the value, in theory, of what you paid. The risk is that some antiques do not increase in price. We have certainly seen that in the last decade with both traditional brown furniture as well as the new speculative collectibles. Of course, the offset is that “you buy it because you like it, and who cares if it goes up in money.” Well, I have yet to meet a serious collector who did not like the idea that their treasures went down in price or flat-lined. For some dealers, it’s a matter of offering the piece for sale at a higher price and hoping that someone else pays the price. I think most folks who are active collectors have been in booths in antique malls were certain items are priced double what they should be. I always attributed this to dealers who paid full retail for an item and then could not afford to sell at cost so they doubled the price and hoped it would be sold. Value is a hard concept to understand. As I have often said, a great item will always have value and, in many cases, will appreciate over time. The flipside is when an item, while still having a value, loses the

value because it is no longer collected. This has been a bitter pill for many collectors who believe the value of their collections only rise over time. The idea that a century-old antique would drop in value is anathema to them, and so they keep holding out, hoping the market will return. The irony is that the antiques market has always had hot items and not-sohot items. One can still buy English oak at prices that are comparable to what it sold for in the 1920s and 1930s when the baronial style was really red hot. American Empire, particularly country Empire or pillar and scroll Empire, is definitely a buyer’s market, as it has been since I was a kid. I am sure the $95 that I paid for my first Empire dresser could buy it back today for that same, if not less. So, when one complains about paying too much, it is really a relative term and one that you should not get too hung up on. Always buy because you enjoy it, and realize that prices go up and go down and that as long as it gives you pleasure it will be a wonderful antique to this special sale weekend, own. Auction Made Worldwide Headlines With The $1.38 Million Sale Of Michael Jordan’s NCAA Player Of The Year Jersey One could say there were millions of reasons why Heritage Auctions’ three-day Spring Sports Catalog Auction was a newsmaker, beginning with the final tally: more than $33.5 million, a new record high for the world’s leading sports auction house. This new highwater mark, set May 6, 7, and 8, comes just two months after March’s $32.7-million Platinum Night Sports Auction, and five months after Heritage’s first $22-million sports auction in December 2020. It would seem every sports auction now is a bestever event. “I am extremely proud of the hard work the team of experts at Heritage Sports put in to this recordbreaking auction,” said Chris Ivy, director of Heritage Sports. “And I am extremely thankful for the thousands of consignors and bidders who continue to entrust us to

handle the sale of these precious sports collectibles. The future looks very bright for this hobby as it continues to attract new collectors from around the globe.” Indeed, more than 3,300 worldwide bidders helped set the latest record during the Spring Catalog Sports Auction, a near-sellout in which more than 40 lots among almost 2,900 surpassed six figures, chief among them the headline-grabbing sale of Michael Jordan’s University of North Carolina jersey from his 198283 NCAA Player of the Year season. That Carolina-Blueand-white top, the only one ever to come to market, sold for more than $1.38 million. That amount smashed the previous record for a Jordan jersey set in October, when Heritage Auctions sold a complete, photo-matched Jordanworn Chicago Bulls uniform from the 1986-87 season for

$480,000. “Over the last several years Heritage has set dozens of world records in the redhot Michael Jordan collectibles market, and now we’re proud to have shattered the records for a Jordan game-worn jersey,” said Ivy. “As the final price tag proves, this jersey has everything any serious collector could possibly want.” Two cards in the May sale likewise realized more than $1 million, among them the 190911 T206 Sweet Caporal Honus Wagner graded PSA Fair 1.5, which sold for $2.28 million. As Sports Collectors Daily notes, that’s a new high for the Holy Grail graded below a PSA VG 3. It’s worth noting, too, that a Wagner-signed ball, ca. 1940, more than tripled its pre-auction estimate when it sold for $120,000. Extended bidding on that lot went well into the early morning hours. The auction’s other seven-figure sale was the latest addition to the list of most coveted cards, a 2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady Championship Ticket. The seemingly ageless quarterback’s card, numbered 34 out of 100 and graded 8.5 by BGS with the autograph receiving a perfect 10, sold for $1.59 million. And one piece of cardboard came mighty close to crossing the million-dollar

Curtain Going Up! Collecting Broadway Posters “Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century” By Donald-Brian Johnson What do you do when the house lights come up following your very favorite movie? Well, you buy another ticket and watch it again (like the lady from Wales, who viewed “The

Sound of Music” 900-plus times). And then you buy the DVD, for perpetual re-watching. What do you do when your favorite Broadway show closes? Not much. Live theatre is transitory: when it’s over, it’s over. Sure, videos, recorded solely for reference purposes, occasionally surface. And if it’s

a Broadway musical, there’s usually an original cast album available for your listening pleasure. There are “Playbills” and souvenir showbooks to thumb through, “Beauty and the Beast” music boxes to sigh over, and “Phantom of the Opera” half-masks to hang on your walls. But for the true Broadway

buff, the best keepsake is a “window card.” These 14-by22-inch posters are slices of theatrical history. Almost every show has one. There are window cards for the classics (“My Fair Lady,” “Oklahoma!”); for the popular-in-their-timebut-now-overlooked (“Redhead,” “Li’l Abner”); and for the out-and-out flops (“Sherry,” “Legs Diamond,” and oh, so many more).

Window cards got their name because, in the beginning, that’s what they were. At one time, New York City was home to a nest of theatrical ticket brokers, licensed to sell theatre tickets for, essentially, whatever they could get. Agency windows were plastered with cards hawking the latest Broadway hits. Theatre memorabilia-lovers often made the rounds of the

agencies, hoping to wheedle cards promoting recentlyclosed shows from agents who were usually willing to oblige, for a price. And then, ticket scalping was banned in New York. Agents either closed up shop or moved their base of operations to less stringent New Jersey, taking their window cards with them. Continued on page 10

Posters Continued from page 8

What were theatre lovers to do? Luckily, poster specialist Roger Puckett, of NYC’s Triton Gallery, persuaded printers that there was a market for window cards amongst the hordes of fans filling the city’s theatre seats. Soon, immortality was once again assured for Broadway’s good, bad, and downright ugly. Since a poster’s primary purpose is to draw in the crowds, finding the right “hook” for a show is paramount: those glowing “Cats” eyes, for instance, or the sadfaced little “Les Miserables” girl. If a star is taking center stage, then the poster had better, in some way, emphasize that. When Zero Mostel

became the breakout star of “Fiddler on the Roof,” the poster’s central dancing girl image was supplanted by a dancing, fiddle-playing Zero. On a roof. Professional illustrators do their best to capture a show’s intent, usually after perusing the script and meeting with the show’s creative team. Often, it’s a thankless assignment. Hilary Knight, creator of magnificent posters for such shows as “Sugar Babies” and “No, No, Nanette,” was once called upon to provide poster art for “Timbuktu!,” director Geoffrey Holder’s re-imagining of “Kismet.” Design after design was submitted, and rejected. The reason? Holder’s dreams

antiquesandauctionnews.net of the previous evening had suggested other images. Sometimes, through no fault of the illustrator, intent fails to match reality. The poster for Barbara Streisand’s “Funny Girl,” by artist Talivaldis Stubis, featured an upside-down girl on roller skates. Theatregoers, however, never spotted Ms. Streisand on skates; the number was cut before opening (although reinstated for the movie). Window cards of current or recent hits are remarkably affordable, with most in the $50-and-under range. And if The star takes center stage: you weren’t around for the Al Hirschfeld’s interpretation classics, or want a poster for a of the incomparable Carol show with a limited print run, Channing, for her 1978 you’re in luck. Nick van revival of “Hello, Dolly!” Hoogstraten at Triton Gallery ( b r o a d w a y p o s t e r s . c o m ) reproductions and recreations offers remarkably detailed of posters from the past.

King of the Broadway jungle: Frank “Fraver” Verlizzo’s design for “The Lion King,” 1997. With Broadway still on hiatus until September, why not check out what’s available for home viewing? Then, settle back in your easy chair (surrounded, of course, by walls filled with show posters), and enjoy! It’s almost like being at the theatre (except no one will mind if you rustle your candy wrapper). Theatre poster visuals courtesy of Michael Deatz.

“Show Boat” has seen numerous reincarnations. This romantic poster image dates from the musical’s 1994 Broadway revival. Photo Associate: Kuhlmann.

above the hole and dangle over the opening. Businesses began giving flue covers out before 1900 as a gesture of good will. Strangely enough, the name of the business was not painted on the flue cover until mostly the 1940s. Collectors of flue covers can find them decorated with various motifs, such as scenery, animals, children, Victorian era ladies and flowers, among other themes. The Grist Mill Antiques Center has a fine selection of antique flue covers for both beginner and

Buddy “L” advanced collectors. Own a business? A grouping of flue covers makes great décor on a wall in an office or restaurant. The Grist Mill Antiques Center is open seven days a week (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The multi-dealer shop is located at 127 Hanover St. in Pemberton Borough right next to the bridge over the Rancocas Creek in Pemberton, N.J. Bring a picnic lunch and sit at our picnic table overlooking the scenic creek and do some browsing inside. For more information, call 609-726-1588.

painted a deep dipped baked-on black paint. In the 1991 “Buddy ‘L’ Toys” book volume 1, page 16 refers to a black enameled “gadget” described as a soap flaker and referred to

the object as a black box. This was a promotional item and given to clients and customers. It is speculated that this pre-toy line soap slicer by Moline was made around 1918 or 1919. The winding mechanism on the

soap slicer was also featured on the steam shovels and other toys with mechanical parts. One pictured Buddy “L” toy was pictured for comparison. Perhaps this kitchen utensil was a transitional item

between the production of car parts and toys. This style of manufacturing later reflected the strength and quality of a pioneer early 20th century Illinois manufacturing company.
