COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT
I have to confess that I enjoy collecting textiles. Many collectors disavow collecting anything made of fabric because of the conservation and preservation issues. The fear of the moth and silk rot and acid burn keep many people from collecting clothing, coverlets, quilts, etc. And yet, I would argue that fabric is immensely durable over time. I have seen rare South American bird feather capes that were centuries old. The fear of deterioration with textiles is not something to be sloughed off, but it also should not be a major deterrent from collecting. The issues with textiles are really about maintaining a constant
never completely sure. Restoring textiles is complex and should not be taken on by the novice. Using original materials is critical not only for accuracy’s sake, but also so that modern materials do not react with the antique. I do recommend you identify someone who can help you restore items properly. Cleaning is also a topic that should be reserved for someone skilled in old textiles. I have seen so many Indian weavings where the owner couldn’t resist popping them into the wash, and the colors bled. Pink is a not a great

and stable environment for the items. Attics and basements are not good choices for obvious reasons. At a more micro level, neither are wooden blanket chests unless there is a protective layer between the wood and the textiles. Critters are always a worry, and I have my own treatments for handling issues. Items new to the collection go into a bag with mothballs for a couple of months. Mothballs are toxic, and I caution people to be careful in handling them. I recall a collector who had a major league collection of items, but he dosed them heavily with mothballs. The result was the entire house reeked of the smell, and I am sure it contributed to his early demise. When we lived in New Mexico, the preferred treatment was freezing and thawing. Rug collectors would freeze a weaving for a month and then let it thaw for a week to have the surviving bugs hatch. Then back into the freezer to kill them off. They swore it worked, yet I was
choice for an Indian weaving. I also do encourage people to enjoy their textiles. We use coverlets and antique tablecloths at the holidays. Rugs look great on antique tables. The costume collection is not for wearing, but it is a great study and conversation piece for us when people come to the house. Samplers are on our walls, and my political handkerchief collection is always something that I enjoy. Collecting textiles is fun, and there are a lot of opportunities for the savvy collector to acquire wonderful pieces at reasonable prices. Pennsylvania German traditional clothing, weavings,

The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State in State College, Pa., received a major grant of $100,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation to produce a catalogue that will illustrate and detail its impressive American art collection. The four-year grant will provide funding for the research and production of the catalogue, which will highlight around 100 of the most historically significant examples of the Palmer’s 4,500some works of American art. “The Henry Luce Foundation only awards grants to art museums with exceptional holdings in American art, said Palmer director Erin Coe. “A grant from this prestigious foundation recognizes both the national significance of the Palmer’s collection of American art and the need to support scholarly research so the collection is more accessible and visible. The Luce-funded catalogue will be the first of the museum’s permanent collection ever to be published and will significantly raise the Palmer’s profile as a major repository of American art. It represents an outstanding opportunity for students, scholars, visitors, and residents of the local community to become more engaged with the art of the United States at the Palmer and Penn State. Coe said the project will put the Palmer’s collection on the national stage and have a lasting impact on studies of American art. The launch of the catalogue is planned to coincide with the museum’s 50th anniversary in 2022. Adam Thomas, the Palmer’s curator of American Art, will lead the research and serve as editor of the publication. “The catalogue will be a multi-author print publication containing short scholarly essays on approximately 100 of the museum’s most important objects, said Thomas. “It will feature high-quality color images, showcase new research and interpretations, and foreground the centrality of American art to the history of the museum and to Penn State. This is the first grant that the Luce Foundation has ever awarded to the Palmer, and it is also the largest grant from a private foundation ever received by the museum. About the Henry Luce Foundation The Henry Luce Foundation was established in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc., to honor his parents. The foundation seeks to bring important ideas to the center of American life, strengthen international understanding, and foster innovation and leadership in academic, policy, religious, and art communities. A leader in arts funding in the United States, the American Art Program, which is the grant area from which the Palmer grant comes, was established in 1982 to support universities, museums, and arts organizations in their efforts to advance the understanding and experience of American and Native American visual arts through research, exhibitions, publications, and collection projects.

Winterthur And Longwood Gardens To Offer A Joint, Discounted Admission Ticket “Follies And Fountains” On View Until Aug. 31 historic structures currently in the garden that visitors have enjoyed for years. Together they form a delightful, entertaining, and fresh way for visitors to discover and experience the Winterthur Garden. The Follies exhibition can be enjoyed on foot or from the garden tram. A one-mile walking loop takes approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The main path through the garden is wheelchair and stroller accessible. During the exhibition, the garden will be open until dusk. All admission tickets include Enchanted Woods, a threeacre garden for children, and an introductory tour of the mansion. Fountains at Longwood Longwood Gardens is not only one of the world’s great display gardens, but is also home to the most significant fountain collection in North America. The jewel of the fountain collection is the Main Fountain Garden. The culmination of the legacy and vision of Longwood founder Pierre S. du Pont, the Main Fountain Garden combines classic landscape design with stunning architecture, innovative technology, and extraordinary fountains. A hallmark of the Longwood experience since its debut in 1931, the Main Fountain Garden completed an extensive two-year revitalization in 2017. Today, guests can experience the five-acre garden’s generous lawns, shaded alleés, sculpted plantings, and explore its unique garden follies, including the hidden grotto, elaborate sculptures, and Love Temple in the adjacent Carpinus Allée. The dazzling fountain performances are a feat of design and engineering that combine
the garden’s original fountain features with a new suite of awe-inspiring effects, including 1,719 swirling jets that can reach as high as 175 feet and 30 jets that combine water and flame. The fountains perform 12-minute shows set to music daily at 11:15 a.m., 1:15, 3:15, 5:15, and 7:15 p.m. through Oct. 28. On Thursday through Saturday evenings, spectacular 30-minute illuminated performances set to a variety of musical genres delight at 9:15 p.m. (May to July) and at 8:15 p.m. (August to October). In addition to the Main Fountain Garden, Longwood is also home to the enchanting Italian Water Garden and

For more information, call 610-388-1000. About Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library The former country estate of Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969), Winterthur offers tours of his home and collection of American antiques and decorative arts. The 60-acre garden, nestled in the nearly 1,000 acre estate, features the choicest
plants from around the world selected by du Pont to enhance the natural setting, arranged in lyrical color combinations and carefully orchestrated in a succession of bloom from late January to November. Winterthur is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and is located on Route 52, six miles northwest of Wilmington, Del., and five miles south of U.S. Route 1. It is closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Images courtesy of Winterthur.

This summer, visitors may explore 13 whimsical garden follies displayed throughout the estate for Winterthur’s first garden exhibition and enjoy the awe-inspiring fountain display at Longwood Gardens using just one admission ticket. Until Friday, Aug. 31, visitors will be delighted by two glorious du Pont gardens, located only minutes apart in the historic Brandywine Valley just outside of Philadelphia. For $34, visitors can see both Longwood Gardens and Winterthur, as well as take a guided tour of the Winterthur mansion, at a 20 percent savings. Follies at Winterthur From the 22-foot tall Needle’s Eye floating in a pond to the Chinese Pavilion, from the pagoda-topped Latimeria Summerhouse to the Faerie Cottage with a thatched roof, Winterthur’s first garden exhibition, “Follies: Architectural Whimsy in the Garden” will delight visitors this summer. Thirteen fantastic structures are located throughout the estate for visitors to explore and enjoy. A folly is an architectural construction, such as a gazebo or summerhouse, often extravagant or picturesque, placed within the landscape to amuse, frame a view, or pique curiosity. Some of the follies at Winterthur are newly built structures based on classic and contemporary examples at estates elsewhere. These include the Gothic Tower, inspired by sham castles and fake ruins that were very popular in European landscapes in the 1700s and 1800s. Others, such as the Latimeria Summerhouse, are
Open Air Theatre fountains, which also perform daily. For a complete schedule of all fountain performances, garden features, and programs, visit www.longwoodgardens.org. About Longwood Gardens In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870–1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, Pa., to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays and home to the most significant fountain collection in North America, encompassing 1,083 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ, and 4.5-acre conservatory. ONE SMALL TOWN. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.
Swann Galleries broke long-standing records and brought new artists to auction for the first time in its June 5 Illustration Art Sale. Just over 250 works were sold for a 76 percent sell through rate. Contributing to the success of the auction was a section of works for historically important theater productions by noted set and costume designers. A promotional drawing by Al Hirschfeld for “Cabin in the Sky,” 1940, published in The Herald Tribune, was purchased by a collector
for $32,500. Hirschfeld also designed the promotional poster for the 1943 film. An early sketch by Jo Mielziner for the set of the Tony awardwinning first production of “Death of a Salesman,” 1949, far exceeded the previous record for a work by the artist, which had stood at $3,250. The ink and wash piece was purchased by a collector for $23,750. Costume designs by Erté and Elizabeth Montgomery, known as Motley, also performed well. Topping the sale was
Russell H. Tandy’s cover for one of Carolyn Keene’s popular Nancy Drew mysteries, “The Secret in the Old Attic,” from 1944. Each detail of the watercolor and gouache painting was done by hand, including the precise text of the title and author’s name. After break-neck bidding, the work was purchased by a collector for $35,000, a record for the artist. A record was also achieved by Ruth Eastman with a proposed cover for The Continued on page 15

What’s it Worth? As donations have increased, most nonprofits have become more selective in what they will accept. Most will provide you with a receipt that does not contain a donation value. That’s your responsibility. What should you claim? Our advice would be to make a fair estimation of value and take some digital images for documentation.
Donations under $500 require nominal documentation. But as your declared donation value increases, documentation requirements increase, and if donating items of substantial value, you may want to consult your attorney or accountant for guidance. Mike Ivankovich is an auctioneer, appraiser, home downsizing expert, and host of the “What’s It Worth? Ask Mike the Appraiser” radio show that airs live on Friday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. on WBCB 1490 AM in the greater Philadelphia area. It is available on the internet at www.WBCB1490.com. His show also airs in Denver, Co., on KEZW Cruisin 1430 AM on Saturdays from 3 to 4 p.m. MST and Sundays from 11 a.m. to noon MST, and on the internet at www.Cruisin1430.com. PUBLIC AUCTION
on-site estate auction 613 Mount Vernon Avenue, HADDONFIELD,
You’re preparing to downsize your house and deal with your “stuff.” You can’t take it with you. Your children don’t want it. The auctioneer doesn’t want it. And you’re having a difficult time finding a buyer. What do you do? An increasing number of people are donating items to a nonprofit organization rather than wasting any more time trying to sell it. As a result, in my opinion, we are currently in a golden age for nonprofit donations. Donations are at an all-time high, and thrift stores have been the beneficiary of this increase in generosity. Need proof? In our area, Good Stuff Thrift has grown to four locations, Impact Thrift has three locations, NOVA just built a larger building, and Holy Redeemer Thrift is adding space, all to accommodate the
growing volume of donations. Add in Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Vietnam Vets, Goodwill, Community Aid, and a host of other similar groups, and a whole lot of donations are needed to keep them all in business.

Firearms Auction In Fairfield, Maine, Grosses Over $2.4 Million The tradition continues. With thousands of bidders participating from across the globe, Poulin’s held a large firearms sale on May 7, 8, and 9 that grossed roughly $2.4 million. The bidding frenzy was intense. The large inhouse crowd, telephone bidders, internet platform bidders, and absentee bidders all competed for a wide selection of firearms.
As always, strong representations of Winchesters were on the block demanding bidders’ attention. This grouping included a Model 12 custom engraved pump depicting hunting dogs flushing grouse in a woodland setting on one side and flying mallards with a lake scene on the other, which landed at $5,287. Notably, a Winchester Super X Model 1 Super Pigeon high grade
This Krieghoff K-80 Trap Special O/U shotgun set sold for $21,150. This three-day auction was comprised of several collections, including the personal collection of the late Joseph “J.R.” LaRue (19402017). LaRue was the chief firearms consultant, advisor and catalogue writer at James D. Julia Inc. for many years. He also owned Carter Mountain Consulting Agency in Tenn., providing appraisals for the firearms community across the country. His name is synonymous in the firearms world and will long be respected for his breadth of knowledge, kindness, and impact he had within the community of collectors. The first six lots were Angelo Bee-engraved firearms, including a Colt 1908 vest pocket pistol, a Colt Python, a Browning trombone slide action rifle, a Winchester Model 21 two gauge set, and two extraordinary Browning Superposed shotguns. Bee’s masterpieces set the pace when all six went out the door totaling over $81,000. Continuing with shotguns, Poulin’s next presented an engraved Krieghoff K-80 Trap Special O/U shotgun set decorated with ornate vine foliate scrolls highlighted with gold, which sold for $21,150. Immediately following was a Perazzi MC-28 O/U game shotgun realizing $13,512. A sleeper in the shotgun offering was a Thomas Boss percussion side lock SXS shotgun having SN 118, which soared past its presale estimate to land at $4,700.
depicting four ducks on one side along with two pointers and partridge on the other, all in gold, sold for $4,700. Another pleasant surprise was the Ansley H Fox AE shotgun, which carried a pre-sale estimate of $1,000-$1,500 and ended at $4,112. Not to be outclassed was a Parker Top Lever Grade 12 gauge, estimated at $1,750-$2,500, having restored case colors, which did not seem to bother participants as they drove the total price to $11,750, followed by a scarce Savage Arms Fox XE Grade retaining its original case colors, estimated at $6,500-$10,000 and realizing $17,037.
display in selection, participation, and prices. With many fine examples to choose from, this auction had something for everyone. Revolvers were represented with a Colt Python Elite DA that sold for $4,406 and a Nickel Colt Python recognizing a final price of $3,642. A fine Angelo Bee engraved Colt Python DA surpassed its estimate, realizing $8,812. In the semi-auto class, a Browning Model Gold Classic Semi-Auto having gold inlays and engraving realized $3,995; however, the star of the semi-auto class was the Sig Sauer XM9 Trials Model P226, which garnered competitive bidding to catapult this fine piece far past its estimate to an astounding $10,575. A Union Switch & Signal Model 1911 A1 went out the door for $6,756, at the high end of its $5,000-$7,000 estimate, and a rare Russian Baikal military Model PSM substantially surpassed its estimate of $3,000$5,000 by realizing $9,987. On day two, Poulin’s presented the Dewat Auto Ordnance Thompson Model 1928 SMG. This fully transferable example received great interest, and when the bidding came to a close, this example sold for $21,150. There was a sizeable selection of tactical-style semiautomatic rifles, including a Barrett Model 82A1, which sold for $8,225. The semiauto version of the Browning M1919A4 machine gun went out at $3,290, as well as a Colt SP1 AR-15 example that
This Winchester Model 12 custom engraved pump shotgun sold for $5,287. Lever actions held their own in this sale with an exceptional Ballard No. 6-1/2 Rigby factory engraved single shot, which rang in at $18,212. The Winchesters saw a number of 1886s come across the block, including a deluxe lightweight takedown example that surpassed the $2,250$3,250 pre-sale estimate to land at $4,112. Not to be outdone was a Marlin 39-A example, which also sold for $4,112, far exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $1,250-$1,750. Handguns were on strong

work at his home, dubbed “Fort Ellis.” This one-of-akind rifle with SN 0001 received competition, taking the sale price to $3,525. Also of merit was the rare Interdynamic Model KG-9, which topped out at $3,113. M1 Garands were in high demand at this sale. Whether a Springfield, Harrington & Richardson, International Harvester or Winchester, we saw almost all examples selling over their high estimates. A selection of bolt action rifles were well received by bidders, starting with a Mauser Model B, which brought $2,643 against a $1,500-$2,000 estimate; a Winchester Model 70 doubled its estimate when it realized $1,880, and a Remington Model 03-A4 Sniper with near excellent two-groove bore sold for $2,232. A select offering of Lugers were included in this three-day

Of special note were the Mauser 42 Code, 41 dated Luger and the DWM Model 1914 Artillery with pistol rig, which sold for $2,350 and $2,820, respectively. Continuing with the German engineering, we saw a good example of the DUV G43 Bolt Action go out at $2,585 along with a Mauser 98 ZF41 sharp shooter realizing $2,820. One of the surprises in the military
offering was a Steyr Model 1885 Guesdes Boer War single shot rifle, which carried a presale estimate of $400-$600 and sold for $1,645. With Poulin’s reputation for honesty, low commission rates, and guaranteed descriptions together with their recent auction producing a 99-percent sell-through rate, they proved, once again, why they are among the leaders in the firearms auction industry. Tire Rationing During World War II
These postcards from a comedic set were published by the Curt Teich Co., early 1942.
At the end of 1941, the wartime administration in Washington placed a ban on the sale of new tires for automobiles. Americans were already dazed by the furiously unfolding chain of events following the attack on Pearl Harbor and military mobilization. The ban accompanied gas rationing and other controls on the country’s economy. Telling civilians that they were now home front soldiers, the government launched a massive campaign at the onset of World War II to rally support for its extensive rationing program. In time, nearly all foods were on the list, as well as gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol, heating oil, and clothing. During the first couple of years of the war, rubber tires for passenger autos were not rationed; worse, they were not even allowed to be sold. Of all the raw materials needed to combat the Axis powers, rubber was considered among the most critical. By now, tires had become an absolute necessity for the millions of automobiles owned and loved by Americans. But unfortunately, it took one ton of rubber to build each of the tens of thousands battlefield tanks needed to wage war. The Japanese Empire had overrun the Far East very rapidly, and our supply of crude rubber, the prime ingredient used to make tires, was almost completely cut off. Attempts to grow rubber trees in the U.S. failed, so what small flow of rubber was still available, mostly from South America, went into wartime production. Research in the technology of synthetic rubber production was stepped up. By 1943, nearly 800,000 tons of the material was being made. To conserve the tires already on the hubs of the nation’s cars and make them last until the end of the war, authorities came up with a game plan. The scheme called for gas rationing and a 35 mph speed limit to halt excessive driving, slowing down wear and tear. The government also

At one point, midway through the war, a good second tire brought nearly $50, about five times the regulated price for a new one. Old tires were patched and repatched. There was no other choice. Saturday Evening Post, titled “Hitting the Links of Palm Beach,” from the mid-1920s. The gouache painting on a printed Post cover reached $8,750, above a high estimate of $1,200. The record for a cover by Charles Addams for The New Yorker was not one of the dark gags for which he is known, but for the bright and hysterical Penguin Convention, 1977. The watercolor vista of innumerable penguins wearing nametags was also a record for any work in color by the artist. It sold to an institution for Russell H. Tandy’s “The Secret in the Old $30,000. The Rackham, Charles Schulz, Everett Shinn and Jessie Willcox Smith also performed well. “We are thrilled with the results, as we were with the enthusiastic throng of attendees at the exhibition the preceding week. The desire for strong works that depict moments of mystery, nostalgia, humor, fashion and theatrical drama continues to fuel competition for the top lots,” stated specialist Christine von der Linn. achieve his dream. “There’s not much you can do as a guidance counselor to help someone that wants to be an auctioneer because you had to be an apprentice at the time in Pennsylvania,” said Hurley. “I tried, but no one would sponsor me because they didn’t want competition.” When he was 19, Hurley went on a two-year mission for his church. Upon return, his desire for the auction block was stronger than ever. “I got home on a Wednesday, and on Thursday morning, one of my favorite auctioneers, Bob Benshoff, called me and said, ‘Hey, do you still want to be an auctioneer? I am
looking for an apprentice.’” His call was a blessing. Hurley served as an apprentice with Benshoff for two years. “I decided that auctioneering is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Hurley recalled. Henceforth, Hurley pursued his dream and in 1993, Hurley Auctions was started. He ran the business from his summer kitchen off Route 997 in Quincy, Pa. Without an auction house to operate from, all sales were conducted out of a rented warehouse in the former Tomstown Community Center. Hurley even got his father and his mother, Barb, hooked on auctioneering. Barb received her auctioneers apprentice license in 2001. Gene apprenticed under Matt from 1996 to 98, and remains an active auctioneer in the company today. In 1998, Hurley purchased 11 acres between Waynesboro and Greencastle and built
what is known today as The Legacy Center. He has satellite offices in West Virginia and Florida. All six of Hurley’s children are involved in the business. In 2017, Kaleb Hurley received his Pennsylvania Auctioneers license, thus beginning the third generation of Hurley auctioneers. Hurley is grateful to his customers. “Thank you for a wonderful 25 years. We look forward to serving you during the next 25 years,” he stated. To commemorate its 25th anniversary, a celebratory open house will be held at the auction house on Friday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hurley Auctions is located at 2800 Buchanan Trail East, Greencastle, Pa. Complimentary refreshments will be provided along with a petting zoo and pony rides for the little ones. For directions or further information, call 717-597-9100.

The Hurley Auctions legacy began when its founder and president, Matthew Hurley, was just a young boy. Some boys dream of becoming a policeman or a firefighter when they grow up, but Matt Hurley had his sights set on something different. His desire to be an auctioneer started when his father, Gene, took five-year-old Matt to a farm sale. “All the way home, I remember saying, ‘When I grow up, I’m going to be an auctioneer,’” reminisced Hurley. In 1982, he conducted his first non-paid auction at a family reunion. In high school, his guidance counselor wasn’t sure how to help the teen
