The eighth edition of the Antiques Dealers Association (ADA) online show was a resounding success. Before opening on April 24, 200 visitors were already in the website’s “waiting room,” and another 200 visitors arrived within the first two minutes of being live. All were eager to shop more than 1,900 works posted by ADA members. The fourday show closed on April 27 and drew almost 10,000 visitors. Most significantly, 22 percent of visitors were The Antiques Dealers’ Association of under 44 years old, and 84 percent of America, Inc. (ADA) was established in May visitors were new to the platform. All 1984, as a non-profit trade association. categories achieved sales, from American antiques, fine art, folk art, jewelry, Native American, and other decorative arts. Buyers came from as far as Italy, and while some were “stalwart regulars,” the vast majority of buyers were first-time customers. The ADA Online Show displayed significant works ranging from the 17th to the 20th centuries for browsing and buying, some works showing the international influences of Europe and Asia, others distinctly embodying American material culture. The material was wide ranging and generated tremendous interest; visitors spent an average of 20 minutes on the website and generated more than 400,000 unique page views. In line with their continued goal of growth through providing topnotch services to its clientele, Hake’s Auctions has appointed comics industry veteran Gary Guzzo to the position of comic art consultant and artist representative. In his new capacity, Guzzo will use his extensive experience and connections to secure original art for auctions, including fresh-to-the-market pieces, and help to authenticate material. He will also act as a liaison between Hake’s Auctions and the artists who are looking to sell their work. As a result of his career path to date, Guzzo has a thorough knowledge of both the music and
comics industries. “I literally spent half my life in the music biz and the other half in comics. I saw my first live concert at 13, but even when I was cemented in that business, it always came with a side order of comic books,” commented Guzzo. Starting as a comic book reader, he became a collector after attending his first New York Comic Art Convention and discovering “The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide.” While working in the music business, he temporarily drifted away from regularly buying comics. Then, in 1984, Guzzo decided to open his own comic shop, Amazing Tales, located in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. It quickly outgrew its 12-by-20-foot storefront and moved to a larger location. “I became very friendly with the sales departments at Marvel, DC, and Archie Comics, so Amazing Tales quickly became a store with almost weekly comic book creator

Ceramics Sold Well At May 20 Auction By Jamie Shearer Pook and Pook Inc. Auctioneers and Appraisers in Downingtown, Pa., continued to post strong results in these challenging times with their online only Decorative Arts Auction on May 20, selling 499 out of the 500 lots that crossed the auction block. Prices realized were almost 50 percent over high estimate, proving that the antique buying public is hungry to add acquisitions to their collections. Limited auctions, cancelled antique shows, and closed antique shops appear to be the driving force behind the online buying frenzy witnessed at the last five Pook and Pook auctions. There were 2,176 registered bidders covering all 50 states as well as a handful of other countries
all vying to take home items. Bidsquare.com and Invaluble.com both brought potential buyers to the keyboard on their bidding platforms. Invaluable.com almost doubled Bidsquare.com in the number of registered bidders; however, Bidsquare clients spent the most money. The top selling lot of the day came as a big surprise when two early religious texts sold for $5,375. Both books contained watercolor fraktur bookplates; however, it was the book itself that caused the surge in price. An early Ausbund das ist Etliche Schone Christliche Lieder, with leather cover dated 1774, was the prize, more so than the fraktur inside. It took 74 bids before it was sold to an East Coast

He sold the shop in 1989 and subsequently launched his own staging company specializing in convention A/V services. He moved his business location to Manhattan, which put him near Marvel Comics, where he remained in touch with two friends there, Lou Bank and Steve Saffel. They kept Guzzo apprised of openings at Marvel. “The national staging company I started with a partner did corporate convention work, designing and building large convention booths and specializing in large video presentations.” Over time, one type of staging company would morph into another. Eventually, Guzzo sold his share in the firm and began to explore other options. As luck would have it, Lou Bank contacted him to see if he could help to organize a relief program for those affected by Hurricane Andrew. Working with retailers, radio and TV stations, the National Guard, and the Red Cross, Guzzo helped establish a relief package for affected retailers as well as produce a multi-day entertainment program for kids affected by the storm. Bank then invited Guzzo to join the Marvel staff. Guzzo became director of publicity, tasked with connecting the company with the press and Marvel readers. He began by

“Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature and Culture” is the first exhibition to examine Humboldt’s impact on five spheres of American cultural development: the visual arts, sciences, literature, politics and exploration, between 1804 and 1903. It will be on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s main building through Aug. 16. The museum is the sole venue for the exhibition. It is organized by Eleanor Jones Harvey, senior curator at the museum. Humboldt (1769–1859) was a renowned Prussian naturalist and explorer and one of the most influential figures of the 19th century. He lived to his 90th year, published more than 36 books, traveled across four continents and wrote well over 25,000 letters to an international network of colleagues and admirers. In 1804, after traveling five years in South America and Mexico, Humboldt spent six weeks in the United States. In these six weeks, Humboldt, through a series of lively exchanges of ideas about the arts, science, politics and exploration with influential figures such as President Thomas Jefferson and artist Charles Willson Peale, shaped American perceptions of nature and the way American cultural identity became grounded in the natural world. The exhibition centers on the fine arts as a lens through which to understand how deeply intertwined Humboldt’s ideas were with America’s emerging identity. It includes more than 100 paintings, sculptures, maps, and artifacts as well as a
video introduction to Humboldt and the scientist’s connections to the Smithsonian through an array of current projects and initiatives. “Eleanor Jones Harvey has dusted for Humboldt’s fingerprints on American art and culture and found them nearly everywhere, including the founding of the Smithsonian Institution,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “The Smithsonian, with its vast range of disciplines and multitude of collections and ongoing research, is the perfect setting for this expansive evaluation of Humboldt’s impact in the United States. Humboldt encouraged American landscape painters to embrace our natural wonders as emblems of our cultural identity. As a country, we have much to thank Humboldt for, as reflected in the countless namesake places and species across our land. Most importantly, Humboldt’s influence on America’s love of and protection of nature is revealed in other prominent Americans’ legacies, such as Theodore Roosevelt and Rachel Carson.” The exhibition places American art squarely in the center of a conversation about Humboldt’s lasting influence with artworks that reveal how the American wilderness

among others, will be o n display. Church, an esteemed painter of the Hudson River school, features prominently in the exhibition. He idolized Humboldt, going as far as trekking in the naturalist’s footsteps in South America. The exhibition also includes the original “Peale Mastodon” skeleton, on loan from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, with ties to Humboldt, Peale and an emerging American national identity in the early 19th century. Its inclusion in the exhibition represents a homecoming for the important fossil that has been in Europe since 1847 and emphasizes that natural history and natural monuments bond Humboldt with the United States. The skeleton, excavated in 1801 in upstate New York, was the most complete to be unearthed at that time. Its discovery became a symbol of civic pride. In 1804, Humboldt was honored with a dinner beneath the mastodon while it was exhibited in the Peale Museum in Philadelphia. Two paintings featuring the fossil, “Exhumation of the Mastodon” (1806–08) and “The Artist in His Museum” (1822), both by Peale, are on display nearby in the galleries. “This project sets out to recapture the immediate, sustained and profound impact of Humboldt’s ideas and understand how they shaped the works made by some of the most influential American artists of the 19th century who deliberately wove into their major paintings messages about American cultural identity,” said Harvey. “Collectively their efforts created a naturebased aesthetic so well recognized today that its roots are obscured, much in the way Humboldt’s concept of ‘Cosmos’ or ‘unity of nature’ has been accepted as received wisdom. That collaborative model lies at the heart of Humboldt’s enterprise and at that of the Smithsonian as well.” The exhibition features a digital exploration of Church’s famous landscape, “Heart of the Andes” (1859), enabling visitors to engage with the painting’s details in new ways. The wealth of detail is a painterly extrapolation of Humboldt’s plant geography Continued on page 4

About two weeks ago, I visited with a serious collector of books and paper. This individual had spent a lifetime collecting books, documents and papers relating to the story of the West. I studied the collection, and it impressed me with its depth and skill. That being said, what I really stopped to think about was the true rarity of the objects. We can collect pewter or china or chairs, and there are a finite number of items surviving from each of those areas. With paper collectibles, in many cases they are truly unique. Photographs may have multiples; however, original letters do not. As I handled letters, diaries and the scraps of daily life, I came to truly recognize how unique these were. I began collecting paper 40 years ago when I first was shown the uniqueness of these items by my friend and dealer in antiques, Johnny Neidinger. He had incredible paper relating to the story of southcentral Pennsylvania, like currency carried by WWII
wall. For modern collectors with finite amounts of room, this is a great way to indulge your passion without giving up room. If you have a young person who loves WWII, then a collection of original censor-opened V-letters is easy to assemble for little money. If you are passionate about decorative arts, then original catalogs are wonderful. For Civil War buffs, cartes-de-visite of soldiers are a bargain. Tractor broadsides, steamboat blotters, trade cards for grocers, the sky is the limit. So, if you are looking for that fun and reasonable collection, then be sure and check out paper and photography!

German POWs at their camp near Middletown (and the story that several of them escaped one night to take in a movie in Harrisburg) and a letter written in the 18th century from Harris’ Ferry, a rarity with place names before Harrisburg was a gleam in John Harris Jr.’s eyes. The irony was that 10 years later, Neidinger had passed away, and eBay came to be the place for finding paper. For me, it was the hunt for documents that related to the story of trades and work in the 18th and 19th centuries. Sometimes I paid nothing for such a piece, as no one knew what it was. Other times I duked it out with a collector and lost the item to a much higher bid. For some of those, I paused after losing the item and really regretted not bidding more. Others sold for far more than I would have ever paid for the items. Today, paper collecting still remains one of the areas ripe for new collecting. Why? Because there is a lot of antique and vintage paper out there. It is valued and priced all over the map so that you can acquire cool things for $5 or $500, which makes collecting manageable. And, most importantly, an entire paper collection can be housed in a binder in a bookcase on your

Chimborazo, was referred to as “Humboldt’s Mountain. The narrated, 2.5D animated projection enables visitors to appreciate the connections between Church’s painting and Humboldt’s ideas. The exhibition concludes with a “One Smithsonian Interpretive Lounge where visitors can explore the contemporary connections between Humboldt and the work being done across the Smithsonian today. Featured experts include Ximena Velez-Zuazo, marine managing director of the Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment Program at the Smithsonian Conservation and Biology Institute’s Center of Conservation and Sustainability; Kristina Anderson-Teixeira, forest ecologist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute; Mary Elliott, curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and a member of the Slave Wrecks Project International leadership team; and Sofia Elian, graphic designer at the Smithsonian Science Education Center. Book The exhibition catalog, “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature and Culture, is written by Harvey with a preface by Hans Sues, chair of paleobiology and curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The book examines how Humboldt left a lasting impression on American visual arts, sciences, literature and politics. Humboldt inspired a network of like-minded individuals who would go on to embrace the spirit of exploration, decry slavery, advocate for the welfare of Native Americans, and extol America’s wilderness as a signature component of the nation’s sense of self. Harvey traces how Humboldt’s ideas influenced the transcendentalists and the landscape painters of the Hudson River school and laid the foundations for the Smithsonian, the Sierra Club and the National Park Service. Co-published by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Princeton University Press, it is available for purchase ($75) in the museum store and online.

art also came up for bid. “Absolutely phenomenal, that is the only way I can describe this auction,” said Bruneau & Co.’s Travis Landry. “The bidding action for all the major key comic books was intense, with several records being broken. The first Iron Man, Ant-Man and Groot were all show stoppers. The results proved that.” Kevin Bruneau, the president of Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, added, “Even amid a poor global economy and the insidious COVID-19 virus, the pop culture market stood strong. While stocks may be falling, people are investing in other tangible assets. We can’t wait for our next auction.” Following are additional highlights from the auction.
This copy of “Tales to Astonish #27” (January 1962), featuring the first appearance of the Ant-Man, graded CGC 3.5, changed hands for a record $3,875. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com, Bidsquare.com and bidLIVE.Bruneauandco

Illustrator Dan Green’s original artwork for the graphic novel “Doctor Strange: Into Shamballa” was a single panel featuring Dr. Strange in Shamballa, surrounded by wisps of red wind with surreal biomorphic faces towering over him. The ca. 1986 watercolor, with an image size of 13by-5.25 inches, proved to be the ultimate Dr. Strange collectible. It realized $2,750. Anything having to do with Spider-Man is a surefire crowd-pleaser. the Fantastic Four, graded CGC 2.0, changed hands for $3,240. Two desirable comic books sailed past their $2,000 high estimates. One was a copy of DC Comics’ “Detective Comics #168” (February 1951), with the first appearance of the Red Hood identity and origin of the Joker, CGC 2.0 ($2,040). The other was a copy of Marvel Comics’ “Incredible Hulk #181” (November 1974), featuring the first full appearance of the Wolverine, CGC 7.0 ($2,400). To learn more about Bruneau & Co. Someone loosened up their belt and bid $4,000 against a conservative estimate of $200$300 for one lot of clothing. The remainder of this collection, including dozens of additional textile lots, is coming up for auction on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11. It took 76 bids to declare a winner on lot 1071, which

Rounding out DC’s Trinity, of course, is Wonder Woman, whose earliest breakthrough moments are represented in this auction. There’s her very first appearance in 1942 (AllStar Comics No. 8, CGC VG/FN 5.0 issue), her first cover (1942’s Sensation Comics No. 1, CGC GD/VG 3.0), and the first issue of her eponymous title bowing in 1942 (Wonder Woman No. 1, one of the finest copies ever brought to auction). There are other issues of All-Star Comics in the summer sale, among them one of the most important copies (and covers) in the medium’s history, All-Star No. 3 (CGC VG 4.0), containing the first meeting of the Justice Society of America, the gold standard for DC’s Golden Age starring Green Lantern, Flash, the Spectre, Doctor Fate, Hourman, Sandman and the Atom. The JSA’s successors, the Justice League of America, made their debut 20 years later in The Brave and the Bold No. 28. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Flash and Martian Manhunter team up in a Silver Age spectacular represented here with an extraordinary CGC VF/NM 9.0 copy. For those collectors who make theirs Marvel, the summer event features no shortage of major milestones, beginning, appropriately, with the comic book that introduced readers to The Marvel Age: Fantastic Four No. 1 (CGC Qualified VF+ 8.5), published in 1961, and the comic whose art, characters and tone defined the company for generations. “I was really interested in the characters as people, artist Jack Kirby once said of his first co-creations with Stan Lee. “I have a genuine feeling for real people, and what I do is re-create them in a fantastic formula. of DC’s predecessor, National Allied Publications, New Fun was oversized and overstuffed with stories, among them the ongoing adventures of Texas Ranger Jack Wood, the first recurring hero in the comics company’s stable. This copy of self-proclaimed Big Comic Magazine is notable for countless reasons, among them its condition—85 years old, yet its pages show only light wear. Wheeler-Nicholson also edited and wrote several stories for this issue, the title’s penultimate before changing its name to More Fun in the winter of 1936. It’s also the last issue of New Fun that appeared on stands without contributions from two promising young creators named Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman No. 1, the first title ever devoted to a single superhero, is going to be the centerpiece of any comics auction in which it appears, and this sale has three issues, among them a CGC VG/FN 5.0 that’s one of the 10 best copies of the title CGC has ever certified. It features the first four Man of Steel stories Siegel and Shuster contributed to Action Comics, as well as a new origin story and four previously unpublished pages. The other half of the World’s Finest team is well represented in this auction with several highly coveted issues, chief among them a VG/FN 5.0 copy of Batman No. 1, published in 1940 after the Dark Knight’s initial swing through Detective Comics. Eighty years after publication, this No. 1 holds up as one of the greatest Batman issues ever published. It’s as grim and gritty as any modern-day offering. And, this issue contains the first appearances of The Joker and Catwoman, known then only as The Cat.

Age titles in the summer sale. There’s the first appearance of Iron Man found in Tales of Suspense No. 39 from 1962, represented here by three copies, including one so highly graded (a CGC NM 9.4) that there are only a handful of copies in existence in better condition. Like all iconic Marvel pieces, it bears a Kirby cover (and Don Heck interior), as he designed the first suit of armor. A prized piece worthy of Tony Stark’s collection. You’ll find, too, The Incredible Hulk No. 1, also from 1962, the debut of the man or monster (or both!) created by Kirby and Stan Lee, when Bruce Banner’s alterego was still a pale shade of gray. It’s another Kirby classic, represented here with an issue in graded CGC FN/VF 7.0. The Mighty Thor wielded his Mjölnir for the first time in 1962’s Journey Into Mystery No. 83, one of the most sought-after Silver Age offerings long before he turned into a movie star. Two issues
are available in the summer event, including one graded CGC VF 8.0. A year after Thor’s bow, Marvel published one of the most popular (and, thanks to cocreator Steve Ditko’s artwork, beautiful) comics of all time: The Amazing Spider-Man No. 1 (CGC VF+ 8.5), the Web-Slinger’s first standalone title following his introduction in Amazing Fantasy No. 15. Five icons for the price of one: Spidey and the Fantastic Four, on one of the most reproduced and replicated covers of all time. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are here, too: Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Wasp in The Avengers No. 1 (CGC FN+ 6.5), published in 1963. First, a comic book, not yet the launching pad for the most successful movie franchise ever created. Collectors, assemble. Morphy’s Extraordinary Sporting And Collector Firearms Sale Captures $8.4 Million Over Three Days An international call to arms resulted in an $8.4 million total at Morphy’s May 27, 28, and 29 auction, which teamed a Founders and Patriots Arms and Militaria session with a two-day lineup of Extraordinary, Sporting and Collector Firearms. Phone lines buzzed nonstop while Morphy’s internet live-bidding platform, Morphy Live, kept online bids flowing in from all over the United States and abroad. “Any question as

In addition to advanced collectors who went for the very rare and unique pieces, there were many enthusiastic new collectors who were guided by our experts’ meticulously detailed catalog descriptions. At every level, buyers were thrilled with their purchases.” The undisputed star of the Founders and Patriots session was a ca. 1765-70 Revolutionary War presentation pipe tomahawk made by Fort Pitt armorer and future Army general Richard Butler and inscribed to Lieutenant John McClellan of the Pennsylvania Riflemen. Arguably among the most important and best-known American tomahawks in existence, it was featured in the 2005 traveling museum exhibition, “Clash of Empires: The British, French & Indian War, 1754-1763” and counted amongst its previous owners the Earl of Warwick (Warwick
Castle, England), who loaned the tomahawk for display at the Tower of London. Opening at $240,000, it sold to an American buyer for $664,200, a world-record auction price for a tomahawk. Another extremely rare presentation pipe tomahawk, dated 1760, was a gift from King Louis XV to
