Saturday’s session included country accessories, such as baskets, pottery, lighting, china, fraktur, tinware, and woodenware. A Peter Derr (1793-1868) brass

body betty lamp stamped “PD 1856” sold for $2,150 and a Peter Derr dough scraper stamped “PD 1850” sold for $600, both going to the trade. Derr was a prolific metalsmith from Berks County, Pa., and his work has a large collector base. An oddity in the sale was a woolly mammoth tusk believed to have been found in Alaska in either 1953 or 1954 while gold

mining using hydraulic water pressure. The full length was nearly 80” and it sold for $3,300. The company’s next catalog sale will take place Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28. Contact Horst Auction Center at 717-738-3080; website is www.horstauction.com.

(Right) One of the top lots of the two-day sale was this Lehn-type paint-decorated miniature lift-top chest on original turned feet and green painted ground with yellow and black pin striping. It sold to local dealer Greg Kramer for $3,500 (est. $700$1000).

(Left) A red paint-decorated doll cradle with green trim, yellow pin striping and floral designs sold for $925 (est. $225-$350) to Bucks County collector Paul Flack, underbid by the trade. The decoration was done in the manner of William Heilig, who worked during the 19th century in Lancaster County and with Joseph Lehn. The cradle was made for Lizzie (Randler) Weaver of Landisville, Pa., and was accompanied by Weaver family photos and assorted archive material.

This leather hanging pin cushion with cut-out birds and initialed “SLW” sold to a collector from Philadelphia for $1,250 (est. $600$900). It measured 6 1/4” x 9 1/8”.

Here is an unusual paint-decorated wooden three tiered sewing stand, probably early 20th century and topped with a spread-winged eagle. It sold to private collectors for $1,250 (est. $350-$450) and was 10” x 13 3/4”.

June Festival Of Antiques In Mullica Hill Show Drew Good Crowd Despite Weather the day before the 7th annual June Festival of Antiques. “Luckily the rain stopped at 3 a.m., just 3 hours before setup,” stated Steve Lipman, who promotes the show with his wife Tracy Dodge, owners of The Yellow Garage Antiques. “As it was, the weather turned out good on Saturday, with just a brief passing shower in the afternoon. The fairgrounds drained amazingly well. Our dealers had visions of trucks stuck in the mud and huge ponds, but by show’s open, Raccoon Creek Antiques, Oley, Pa. everything was nice and dry,” Lipman said. Over 60 dealers were set up under four open air pavilions and outside on the lawns of the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds on June 8 for the one-day event in Mullica Hill, N.J. By day’s end, most of the dealers stated that they had a good show and were pleased with the turnout. “The show has always had a steady crowd throughout the day. By around 10:30, the fairgrounds were inundated with hundreds of shoppers, and that held up for most of the day. We had a very good gate,” stated Lipman. Some of the dealers at this Here is an attendee carrying his year’s event included George purchase of a clothes tree made Allen and Gordon Wycoff of of cypress. Raccoon Creek Antiques of

Captain Kangaroo Bear Steals Show At Sanders Auction Nate D. Sanders Auction House announced that a handcrafted, screen-worn Dancing Bear costume from the popular American television series Captain Kangaroo brought $207,019 during their May 21 auction in Los Angeles, Calif. The Sanders Auction House reported that memorabilia auctioned from the Captain Kangaroo television program generated worldwide interest, but it was the Dancing Bear costume which stole the show in a lastminute bidding frenzy, selling to a collector in Tennessee. T h e Captain Kangaroo c h i l d r e n ’s program The Dancing Bear costume is shown in a cast photo of the Captain Kangaroo television program, which aired from 1955 to 1984.

aired on weekday mornings from Oct. 3, 1955 to Dec. 8, 1984 and is considered to have been the longest-running national children’s show in history. Sanders said the popularity of the show with such a wide audience helped generate unprecedented interest in the Kangaroo auction. “The Captain Kangaroo event was one of the most anticipated

television celebrity auctions of the last 30 years, said Sanders. “It is very rare that anyone gets the chance to acquire items like these, and when the auction was announced, people from all over the country took interest immediately. Prior to the auction, collectors speculated that the prize item would be the famous keys to Captain K a n g a r o o ’s Tr e a s u r e

House. The keys were a beloved part of the show’s opening as Captain Kangaroo unlocked the door to his Treasure House and then hung the keys on their hook near the door. The music would then stop and the show would start. While the keys put on a strong performance during the auction, selling for an impressive $27,971 and garnering 25 bids, it (Continued on page 7)

was the Dancing Bear costume that highlighted the sale. “We knew Dancing Bear was incredibly popular, but everyone thought the keys would be the big ticket item of the night, said Sanders. “The results show you can never predict what will happen during a celebrity auction of this magnitude. The colorful Dancing Bear costume includes a onepiece body suit and a felt and velour plush head accessorized with a black bowtie. For the majority of the Captain Kangaroo program’s airtime, the Dancing Bear character was played by the show’s creator, the legendary and mysterious Cosmo Allegretti. Sanders said the three main characters of the program were Mr. Moose, Bunny Rabbit and Dancing Bear. The value of Dancing Bear’s costume increased due to the fact that the Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit puppets had already been donated to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. Both the Dancing Bear costume and the keys, along with several other Captain Kangaroo items up for auction, were purchased by the same collector. Sanders would only reveal that the items were being shipped to Tennessee. Sanders said the main bidders for the auction were likely between 58 and 63 years old. “We anticipate that the demand for Captain Kangaroo memorabilia will only increase as the years go by, which will drive up the value on items like Dancing Bear and the keys to the Treasure House, said Sanders.

The Cyrus Cylinder On View At Metropolitan Museum tation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is made possible with the support of the Ansary Foundation, Akbar A. Lari, Iranian American Jewish Federation of New York, Nowruz Commission and Omid and Kimya Kamshad. Additional support was provided by the NoRuz at the Met Fund. Exhibition Overview The barrel-shaped Cyrus Cylinder, buried as a foundation deposit, is inscribed in the Babylonian language in Babylonian cuneiform (wedge-shaped writing). The Cylinder was broken at the time of its excavation in 1879, or soon after, and now comprises several pieces fixed together; just over onethird is missing. Its shape is typical for royal inscriptions buried in the foundations of buildings and city walls in Mesopotamia in the first millennium B.C., and also for proclamations. Inscribed on the orders of the Persian king Cyrus the Great, the Cylinder tells of his conquest of Babylon (539 B.C.); of his restoration to various temples of statues that had been removed by Nabonidus, the previous king; and of his own work at Babylon. Two clay fragments from a cuneiform tablet long in the collection of the British Museum were recently discovered to duplicate the text of the Cylinder, demonstrating that it was not unique. These fragments, which will be on view in the exhibition, also add information that is missing from parts of the Cylinder. The Cylinder has resonances far beyond Iranian cultural heritage. The text of the Cylinder, which mentions the return of deported peoples and their gods, has been compared with biblical accounts that praise Cyrus’ role in the return of the Jews to Jerusalem from Babylonian exile and mention the building of the Second Temple. Cyrus is hailed as an ideal ruler in

Many classical authors refer to the great wealth of the Persian royal treasuries. Two shallow bowls - one of gold and the other of silver suggest the kind of luxury tableware that was available to the Persian elite. Large animal-headed armlets were presented as diplomatic gifts. On display will be an armlet with terminals in the form of mythical creatures. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published by the British Museum. It will be available in the Metropolitan Museum’s book shops ($30 hardcover). A special feature about the exhibition will appear on the Metropolitan Museum’s website (www.metmuseum.org). Essays relevant to the exhibition will be posted by members of the Ancient Near East Department on the

Museum’s blog “Now at the Met.” Other venues for the exhibition are: the FreerSackler Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. At the Metropolitan, the exhibition is organized by Joan Aruz, Curator in Charge of the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art; Yelena Rakic, Assistant Curator; and Fiona Kidd, Assistant Curator. Exhibition design is by Michael Batista, Exhibition Design Manager; graphics are by Kamomi Solidum, Associate Graphic Designer; and lighting is by Clint Ross Coller and Richard Lichte, Lighting Design Managers, all of the Museum’s Design Department.

The Cyrus Cylinder, a 2,600-year-old inscribed clay document from Babylon in ancient Iraq and one of the most famous surviving icons from the ancient world, is the centerpiece of the traveling exhibition “The Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia: Charting a New Empire,” on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art through August 4. The Cylinder is relevant to millions of people across the world. It marks the establishment of Persian rule in 539 B.C. by Cyrus the Great, with the defeat of Babylon, the restoration of shrines, and the return of deported peoples and their gods. Cyrus’ legacy is celebrated in the biblical tradition, where he is seen as a liberator, enabling the return to Jerusalem. The Cylinder and 16 related works on view, all on loan from the British Museum, reflect the innovations initiated by Persian rule in the ancient Near East (550-331 B.C.) and chart a new path for this empire, the largest the world had known. Also on display will be works of art from the Metropolitan’s Department of Drawings and Prints and Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts that celebrate Cyrus and his legacy as a liberal and enlightened ruler. A unique aspect of the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum will be its display within the Galleries of Ancient Near Eastern Art, where objects from the permanent collections, including the famous lions from Babylon, will provide a stunning backdrop. The exhibition was organized by the British Museum in partnership with the Iran Heritage Foundation and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. The exhibition’s presen-

known seal of Darius the Great in his chariot, hunting lions in the manner of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal; a winged figure, perhaps Ahuramazda, is above. A trilingual cuneiform inscription in Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian reads: “I (am) Darius, great king.” Two other seals show a figure in a Persian-style robe and a crown, usually referred to as the “Persian royal hero,” struggling with a mythological creature and a wild beast. Achaemenid kings paid homage to Ahuramazda, the supreme Zoroastrian deity. Whether or not the kings were strictly Zoroastrian, the religion took root in Iran under the Achaemenids. A votive plaque from the Oxus Treasure shows a figure holding a barsom or bundle of sticks, an object typically associated with piety in Zoroastrian art.

classical sources, and leaders throughout the millennia, as diverse as Alexander the Great and Thomas Jefferson, have been inspired by his example. Cyrus the Great laid the foundations for the powerful Persian Achaemenid dynasty, which - under the subsequent reign of Darius the Great (522-486 B.C.) stretched from Egypt to India, and from Arabia to the Aral Sea. This first “world empire” shifted the ancient Near East’s political focus from Mesopotamia to Iran. Innovative practices were crucial to administer such a vast and culturally diverse region. Key to Persian imperial success was a policy of religious and cultural tolerance, which fostered political stability. The objects in the exhibition highlight the innovations introduced in the Achaemenid period and include inscriptions, coins, stamp and cylinder seals, a votive plaque, gold and silver tableware, and a gold armlet. Some of these objects are part of the Oxus Treasure, one of the most significant finds from the ancient Iranian world, which was probably originally discovered close to the northern banks of the Oxus River in present-day Tajikistan. The Achaemenid kings were introduced to coinage after Cyrus captured Sardis (547/546 B.C.), where coins had been in use for about a century. The exhibition will include three coins that feature an image of a crowned kneeling figure drawing a bow, often referred to as the “royal archer.” Engraved cylinder and stamp seals played an important role in the ancient Near East. The impressions they made on clay documents served as permanent visual reminders of the sealer’s participation in the performance of a personal, legal, or administrative act. Examples of both types of seals will be shown. Of special note is the well-

Millicent Rogers Museum Acquires Major Piece Of Hopi Pottery The Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, N.M., recently acquired a major piece of Hopi Indian pottery made by Nampeyo (1860-1942), a Hano Tewa Hopi potter, done around 1910. The story of Nampeyo’s rise to fame as a potter began with her introduction to prehistoric wares that were being excavated at Sikyatki ruins on the First Mesa of the Hopi reservation in 1896. Influenced by the prehistoric designs, Nampeyo soon branched out to do other styles and forms of Hopi pottery. Within a decade, she had been recruited by the Fred Harvey Company to come and demonstrate at their hotel at the Grand Canyon. She was so successful that she toured throughout the United States drawing attention to Native American pottery in general and specifically to Hopi work.

“We are thrilled to have acquired this exceptional piece of pottery by Nampeyo,” stated museum executive director Peter S. Seibert. “The Millicent Rogers’ collection of Southwestern pottery is one of our strengths. We currently have 47 pieces of work by Nampeyo’s descendants, but until this month, none by Nampeyo herself! This fills a significant gap in our holdings and enables us to tell the story of Hopi pottery beginning with the best-known potter - Nampeyo.” The pot was acquired with existing restricted funds set aside for the acquisition of significant objects for its collection. separate admission fee to tour the castle is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1 for children, and free for members presenting a valid membership card. Proceeds from Fonthill Castle’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration benefit educational programs at Fonthill Castle and the Mercer Museum. Fonthill is located at East Court Street and Route 313 in Doylestown. Fonthill Castle’s OldFashioned Fourth of July Celebration is generously sponsored by PECO, Matcor Inc., Univest and the Friends of the Bucks County Historical Society. Additional support is provided by Elbow Lane Day Camp and The Intelligencer.

the pot will be exhibited to the public in a new major exhibition of masterpieces from the permanent collection, opening in the fall of 2013. Located in Taos, the Millicent Rogers Museum is dedicated to sharing and celebrating the arts and cultures of the Southwest through its extensive collection of more than 6000 objects spanning from the prehistoric to the contemporary. Special highlights of the museum include the largest public holding of work by San Ildefonso Maria Martinez, Hispanic bultos, Navajo weavings, and the extensive jewelry collection assembled by community leader and fashionista Millicent Rogers.

Contemporary Canopic Jar Sells For $290,500 At Bonhams New York Bonhams New York sold William Morris’ 1995 Sable Antelope Canopic Jar for $290,500, establishing a world record price for a work of art by the artist at auction. A highlight of Dr. Anthony Terrana’s heralded collection of Contemporary Studio Glass, Bonhams offered the masterwork on June 14 in their 20th-Century Decorative Arts auction. Awash in glowing orange/red hues and made of handblown glass, the four-foothigh jar featured a superbly rendered antelope head and horns atop an elongated vase form decorated with frolicking antelopes. The buyer was a private American buyer. “Dr. Terrana acquired the Canopic Jar directly from William Morris after an intensive search,” explained Frank Maraschiello, Bonhams Vice President and Director of 20th-Century Decorative Arts. “We’re so pleased to have set a world record for the artist with this incredibly important work.” All of the William Morris works from the Terrana collection performed well. The artist’s 2001 “Zhejiang Man” sold for $206,500 and his “Lechwe Situla” from 2000 realized $60,000. Since 2007, Bonhams currently holds the record for highest auction price achieved for a single

work of Contemporary Studio Glass at $480,000, for Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova’s monumental Green Eye of the Pyramid. The June 14 auction was dominated by U.S. bidders, although bidders in the U.K., Europe, Russia and East Asia were represented. Bidding was nearly equally split between attendees, telephone bidders and those participating online. A private New York collection of Art Nouveau lithographs by the master illustrator Alphonse Mucha also proved popular. Selling for $62,500, Mucha’s 1896 “Four Seasons” was the collection’s top lot. Depicted with characteristic flair, “Four Seasons” was Mucha’s first series of decorative panels and one of his most sought after works. “Mucha created some of the late 19th century’s most enduring graphics,” noted Beth Vilinsky, Bonhams 20th-Century Decorative Arts Senior Specialist. “Bidding from around the globe was spirited, and we’re so pleased that the vast majority of pieces from this distinguished private collection have found new homes.” Additional highlights included a 1947 suite of eight Pierre Bobot lacquered and

gold leaf panels from New York’s Roseland Ballroom that sold for $68,500 and a Gallé fruitwood-marquetry inlaid mahogany Dragonfly Étagère, circa 1900, that sold for $48,750. Bonhams next New York auction of 20th-Century Decorative Arts will take place in December. Bonhams New York may be contacted at 212-644-9001; website is www.bonhams.com.
