N. C. Wyeth’s (1882-1945) “Island Funeral,” 1939, egg tempera-and oil-on-hardboard, 44.5-52-3/8 inches, is from the Brandywine River Museum of Art and was a gift of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art, 2017. This summer, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will present “N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives,” the first exhibition in almost 50 years to examine in-depth the entirety of Wyeth’s multifaceted oeuvre. A formidable, yet often overlooked figure in the history of American art, N. C. Wyeth was the foremost
illustrator of his generation and the patriarch of an extraordinary family of artists. By repositioning Wyeth as a distinguished painter who worked across the perceived divisions of visual culture in painting, illustration, murals and advertising, the exhibition offers new insights on Continued on page 2

Left to right are Richard Wright, CEO; David Rago, president; and Suzanne Perrault, president. Two independent auction brands, Rago in Lambertville, N.J., and Wright in both Chicago and New York City are pleased to announce the merger of their business operations. Both houses will continue to operate under their individual names while sharing technology, expertise and marketing efforts. In the increasingly competitive auction market, the joint entity will have stronger reach and a broader team of specialists. With $65-plus million in consolidated annual sales, the combined company has a team of 75 and more than a century of business experience. Rago’s broad expertise in art, jewelry, ceramics and estates and Wright’s focus on design and innovative presentation will be combined to better serve their clients and maintain a strong voice in the world of art and design. As CEO of the combined companies, Richard Wright will work in tandem with Rago’s specialists to continue to bring new concepts to the companies’ auction platform. “I welcome the opportunity of
working with a larger team,” says Wright. “Our blended perspectives, geographic reach and experience will add to the great work we both currently do.” “Elbert Hubbard, the Arts and Crafts era luminary, once said that the best business was done in cooperation, not competition,” says David Rago, president. “I’ve always believed in that, and our merger with Wright presents us with a golden opportunity to experience this in practice, rather than theory.” “We are all excited by the potential this merger represents,” states Suzanne Perrault, president, “particularly as it pertains to increased reach and exposure for our shared clientele, consignors and collectors alike. The mix of our two cultures, while similar, presents a fascinating challenge and offers a terrific opportunity for growth, both personally and professionally.” To learn more about Rago Auctions, call 609-397-9374 or visit www.ragoarts.com. Wyeth’s place within the broad spectrum of early 20th-century visual arts. Co-organized by the Brandywine River Museum of Art and the Portland Museum of Art (PMA), this landmark exhibition, which will include approximately 70 paintings and drawings selected from major museums and private collections, will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pa., through Sunday, Sept. 15. Well-known during the 20th century for his bold, imaginative illustrations that brought new characterizations to classic stories such as “Treasure Island,” “The Boy’s King Arthur” and “The Last of the Mohicans,” N. C. Wyeth was a prolific artist who vigorously pursued parallel
interests in painting landscapes, seascapes, portraits, still lifes, murals and advertising images throughout his career. A master of many styles and a brilliant colorist, Wyeth employed the skills honed in the work he produced for publishers and advertising companies to explore and address various thematic and stylistic currents running through the first five decades of the 20th century. Wyeth’s nuanced grasp of how to create emotional power through composition and light effects was not only influential, but also established a certain visual standard for dramatic imagery. The exhibition will feature the iconic paintings Wyeth created to illustrate books and magazine stories, as well as the remarkable landscapes and figurative works of art that have, up until now, garnered less

The Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pa., is showcasing an exhibit titled “Hex Signs: Sacred and Celestial Symbolism in Pennsylvania Dutch Barn Stars” until Nov. 3. The exhibit explores themes of sacred and celestial imagery in the traditional arts of the Pennsylvania Dutch, with special emphasis on the decorated barns of Southeastern Pennsylvania. It features actual barn stars, decorated objects, and related images, and is guest curated by Patrick Donmoyer, director of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University. Donmoyer is the author of “Hex Signs: Myth and Meaning in Pennsylvania Dutch Barn Stars” (2013). This is the second collaborative exhibition between Glencairn and the Heritage Center at Kutztown University. theologian Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) in Bryn Athyn, Montgomery County, Pa. Second, it was known for its involvment in the anti-vaccination movement rooted in the early 20th century. Raymond, in particular, is known for many things. He was a staunch activist against the New Deal. In the 1920s and ’30s, he was national chairman of a group whose mission was the opposition of child labor legislation. Today, we view the family through the lens of religious philantropic endeavors within the Swedenborg community of Bryn Athyn. A schism within the church witnessed a number of members relocating from affluent Bryn Athyn to isolated northern Berks County, namely Albany Township, where a number of them bought historic farmsteads and large estates. There are many Pitcairn descendants in rural Kempton, Berks County. The Glencairn museum is a fascinating place dedicated to religious art and history. Collections include everything from American Indian material to that of ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek and Roman, medieval Christian, Islamic, and Asian art. Collector Anecdotes And Antics By Shawn Surmick On Nov. 11, 2016, Nintendo of America released the NES Classic Edition stand-alone video game system to overwhelming demand. The $59.99 plug and play system that featured 30 built-in classic Nintendo games was modeled after the design of the original Nintendo Entertainment System that took the video game world by storm back when it was first released in 1985. Anticipation for the device was at a frenzied level when the system was first announced in the early summer of 2016, to the point that most major retailers allowed the system to be pre-ordered prior to its release. On launch day, every major retailer sold out of their existing stock and had to turn away would-be buyers. Much to the dismay of retailers and hardcore enthusiasts, Nintendo remained silent about restocks, stating that consumers would have to check back regularly with their favorite retailers. This caused demand for the units to increase, and soon Nintendo collectors, speculators, and even casual enthusiasts took to social media to express their concern about Nintendo’s lackadaisical approach to their handling of
the popular product. Throughout the 2016 holiday season, stores would get limited supplies of the product in stock, and like clockwork they would sell out. Most stores limited the amount of units each consumer could buy in an attempt to ensure that those who were lucky enough to be at the store when they were placing them on store shelves could get one. By December of 2016, the $59.99 device was being sold on the internet for close to $180, with continuous demand from shoppers anxious to have an NES Classic Edition under their Christmas tree. By January 2017, consumers thought since the Christmas holiday shopping season had passed Nintendo would produce more units, but demand was so fierce that Nintendo could still not keep up. Restocks would trickle in and immediately sell out. By April 2017, Nintendo managed to sell a whopping 2.3 million NES Classic Edition units, and then they did the unthinkable. With demand reaching new heights and consumers still wanting to get their hands on an NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo publically announced that the system was created as a limited-edition item and would be discontinued. This caused mass panic and euphoria among diehard collectors. Speculators flocked to video
game related collecting forums to proclaim that the NES Classic Edition would be the most sought-after Nintendo collectible ever produced, and prices on eBay were seen approaching $200 and more for the $59.99 device. Meanwhile on social media, and more specifically Twitter, Nintendo was being inundated with angry comments from diehard fans who were not willing to pay the asking prices on the secondary market. Still, Nintendo made no promises to reintroduce the device. Instead, the company announced the upcoming release of the Super NES Classic Edition (based on the popular 1992 Super NES video game system) that would feature 21 games built in and would retail for $79.99. The Super NES Classic Edition would be released in North America to extreme demand on Sept. 29, 2017. Nintendo ramped up production and barely produced enough systems to meet the demand. This was met by praise by most hardcore Nintendo fans, and Nintendo then publically announced that the original NES Classic Edition would be put back into production on June 29, 2018, after the device was discontinued for more than a year. The NES Classic Edition was readily available on store shelves everywhere from June 2018 to December 2018, when Nintendo announced it would be discontinued once again.
If you are a Nintendo fan who still falls for the manufactured hype that only Nintendo can produce (pun intended), please go back and reread this article again from the beginning before continuing. This is a perfect example as how current manufacturers of popular mass-produced products are perfectly toying with their consumers and, more specifically, speculators. With well over several million NES Classic Edition units released onto the market, no one should ever consider the system rare or even uncommon. Retailers were discounting these systems in January 2019 to clear out any remaining stock, while back in December 2016, scalpers were successfully able to get three times (and sometimes more) the price for each unit sold on the internet. If any Nintendo fan wants to know why production was originally limited, there is part of your answer. The other part is how brilliantly manufacturers like Nintendo continue to toy with their most dedicated consumers. Whether you agree with this practice or not, it truly amazes me that their most dedicated base of core consumers still continues to fall for these same tactics time and time again. Nintendo did this very same thing with their once coveted line of Amiibo interactive toy figurines, which I have written about. That said, and to be fair to some of the emotionally
attached frenzied consumers who continue to pay an exorbitant premium on the secondary market for some of the company’s most popular modern era products, Nintendo does occasionally undercut supply for some items and then permanently discontinue them. The 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Pokemon 3DS system was a primary example of this, as was the one and only printing of the popular 3DS special edition production of the Fire Emblem Fates game. However, and speculators please take note, both of these items in question were readily available for preorder on numerous websites like GameStop and Amazon long before they became available. I know because I preordered both and had no problem doing so less than a month before the launch of both products. There are very few items that Nintendo and other current manufacturers of popular products (i.e Lego and FunkoPop) create that can ever be considered truly hard to find. That is a myth being
perpetrated on online collecting forums that are populated by starry-eyed speculators. A question I am asked often from regular readers is why I tend to write so many articles based on the topic of speculation. My answer bears repeating. Speculation is and always will be a necessary evil in the antiques and collectibles trade. That said, wellversed collectors need to learn when and how to determine what items are worth speculating on for the longterm and when such practices should be avoided. When an inexperienced collector enters the trade and gets burned by speculation, that individual tends to sour on collecting going forward, which is a real shame.

Hake’s Presents Premier Comic Art, Comic Books, Political Memorabilia And Rare “Star Wars” Figures Over 2,000 Lots To Be Sold In July 10 And 11 Pop Culture Auction So far, 2019 has been a dynamic year for pop culture. “Avengers: Endgame” smashed box office records with an opening weekend that grossed $1.22 billion worldwide. That led the way for a visit from “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and, arriving on July 2, “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” But that was just a warm-up. On Wednesday and Thursday, July 10 and 11, Hake’s will host a 2,047-lot auction loaded with original comic art, comic books, super-rare “Star Wars” figures, political memorabilia, and top-notch entertainment posters. Bidding will start with 100plus lots of original artwork for comic book covers and interior pages; Sunday and daily comic strips; and specialty pieces. Expectations are sky-high for Dave Cockrum’s (1943-2006) action-packed title splash page for “X-Men Vol. 1 #95,” published by Marvel Comics in October 1975. “Dave Cockrum is a very important artist, and this issue is significant because it features only the third appearance of the New X-Men, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Banshee and Thunderbird, led by Cyclops,” said Hake’s president Alex Winter. “We think
so highly of this artwork that we chose to enlarge it and use it as the full front cover of the auction catalog.” Artist-signed and inscribed, with a Marvel Comics copyright ink stamp on verso, the lot is estimated at $75,000-$100,000. Hake’s has a great treat in store for collectors of comicstrip art: three consecutive lots of Charles Schulz art for Peanuts daily strips from 1960, 1961 and 1965, respectively. Each comes directly from the collection of the Van Pelt family, who were neighbors and friends of Charles Schulz and his first wife, Joyce, when the couple were in Colorado Springs, Colo. The name “Van Pelt” is entrenched in Peanuts lore, as it was the surname Schulz chose for Lucy, Linus and Rerun. “In fact, the Van Pelts’ daughter Louanne was the inspiration and namesake for Lucy Van Pelt,” said Winter. Each strip is signed, and two of them bear a warm personal inscription and the signature “Sparky,” which was Schulz’s nickname. The estimate is $10,000$20,000 each. Also worthy of special

The spectacular prices realized for Branton’s obscure figures and prototypes inspired other advanced collectors to consign their own rare treasures, Winter said. As a result, this auction includes fresh selections from the Branton collection as well as many extraordinary pieces from new sources. The nearly 200 cataloged “Star Wars” lots span all price ranges and are led by several undisputed knockouts, including a Jawa figure, Vinyl Cape variation, from Meccano’s French release of Kenner’s 1978 “Star Wars” toy line. Vintage Poster Sale A Feast For The Eyes Over 700 Posters From Categories Including Travel, Midcentury Design, Magic, And Advertising Gross $156,000 Potter and Potter’s Vintage Poster Sale held May 22 generated wall to wall interest and, more importantly, results. After the hammer fell for the last time, 65 lots realized between $500-$999; 21 lots made between $1,000$1,999; and 11 lots broke the $2,000 barrier. Prices reported include the company’s 20percent buyer’s premium. Posters featuring dramatic 19th- and 20th-century magic acts were headliners in this sale, taking several of the top lot slots. hot commodities at this event as well. Lot #273, an India Car Festival At Puri poster produced in Bombay by the New Jack Printing Works Ltd. in 1958, raced its way to $2,640 on its $600-$900 estimate. Winterthur Acquires Rare Painting by Robert S. Duncanson Work By 19th-century African-American Landscape Painter Is An Important Find invariably.â€? Duncanson is represented in collections of national and international institutions such as the Cincinnati Art Museum; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; and the Royal Court of Sweden. Robert Seldon Duncanson was born in 1821 in Fayette, N.Y., the grandson of Charles Duncanson (ca. 1745–1828), a freed enslaved man from Virginia. The family had moved into the Military Tract of Central New York, where the federal government granted land to Revolutionary War veterans, suggesting that Charles may have earned his freedom for his military service. Duncanson grew up in a later move to Monroe, Mich., a thriving commercial town at the western end of Lake Erie. After apprenticing in the family trade of house painting, decorating, and carpentry, he formed his own firm of painters and glaziers in Monroe in 1838 in association with a man named John Gamblin. The firm stopped advertising in 1839, probably because Duncanson had decided to move to Cincinnati, Ohio. A city at the crossroad of major East and West transportation routes and on the border between the North and the South, Cincinnati was then becoming a leading economic and cultural center west of the Appalachian Mountains. The bourgeoning city would produce some of the most important artistic and cultural figures of the time, including Hiram Powers, Lilly Martin Spencer, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. In spite of Ohio’s Black Laws, pervasive racial discrimination, and racial violence, it was a stronghold of abolitionism and became home to a short-lived but thriving African American community attracted by the opportunities it offered. Within this community, a small middle class emerged. It established churches, schools, and benevolent societies, and it included an active group of African-American artists. Duncanson’s career is an integral part of this community’s story. In 1841, the artist moved to the village of Mount Pleasant (now Mount Healthy), about 15 miles north of Cincinnati. First operating as an itinerant portrait painter between Cincinnati, Monroe, and Detroit, Duncanson also produced “fancy picturesâ€? and “chemical paintingsâ€? in collaboration with the AfricanAmerican photographer James P. Ball, who moved to the region in 1845 and opened a daguerrian gallery in 1851. Duncanson would contribute to Ball’s monumental antislavery panorama, Ball’s “Splendid Mammoth Pictorial Tour of the United States Comprising Views of the African Slave Trade,â€? which toured the country in 1855. In Cincinnati, Duncanson benefitted from the presence of a circle of active art patrons, artistic institutions, and artists who all contributed to the emergence of a regional school of painting influenced by Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School. In 1847, the Western Art-Union
was established in the city with a gallery that exhibited landscapes by Cole, among others. A Cincinnati patron, George K. Shoenberger (1809–92), who had bought Cole’s series of paintings “The Voyage of Life (National Gallery of Art), exhibited it to the public at the Western ArtUnion in 1848 in the aftermaths of the painter’s death and during the broad press coverage of Cole’s memorial exhibition. Duncanson’s career reached a turning point in 1848. Inspired by the study of Cole’s “The Voyage of Life and encouraged by the commission of a landscape view of Cliff Mine, Lake Superior (1848), by abolitionist minister Reverend Charles Avery, Duncanson left the city and set out on a sketching trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan to devote himself to landscape painting. Upon returning to Cincinnati, he moved to a studio adjacent to William L. Sonntag (1822–1900), an established landscape painter in the city, whose work Duncanson initially emulated and later surpassed. Between 1846, the date when the famous abolitionist newspaper “The Liberator first mentions Duncanson as an important artist, and 1853, the painter’s career and artistic abilities advanced at an amazingly fast pace. Between 1850 and 1852, Duncanson undertook several sketching trips, traveling up the Ohio River through Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan, and south to Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina, where he travelled at least as far south as Asheville. One of the earliest known landscapes from this period, “A View of Asheville, North Carolina (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), is signed and dated from the year 1850. The following year, Duncanson exhibited another Southern composition, “The French Broad, North Carolina, at the Western Art-Union gallery, where the work was praised as one of Duncanson’s best pictures. “Short Mountain was painted exactly during this
This is Robert S. Duncanson’s “Short Mountain, Hawkins County, Tennessee,â€? ca. 1852. Image courtesy of Winterthur. period; the canvas stamp on its back was used by the manufacturer only between 1850 and 1853. The painting offers a direct encounter with the rising talent of this extraordinary artist. The condition of “Short Mountainâ€? is remarkable for a painting of its age. It is unlined, and it has never been removed from its stretcher. Corresponding damages on the stretcher verso and on the frame verso indicate that the painting and frame are an original pairing and that the frame has only been removed twice, once when the painting was studied in Winterthur’s painting laboratory. Examination under magnification and using ultraviolet illumination reveals that a thin layer of natural resin varnish was intentionally left behind in the darkest passages in the lower left. This finding, combined with the observation that the delicately painted branches and green foliage silhouetted at left against the white clouds remain intact, indicates that “Short Mountainâ€? was expertly cleaned during the only conservation treatment it received since it was painted. Overall, the painting is not only in a remarkably excellent state, but also a perfect representation of Duncanson’s ability as a landscape painter at a turning point in his career. Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is pleased to announce that it has acquired the painting “Short Mountainâ€? by Robert S. Duncanson, the foremost African-American landscape painter of the 19th century. A special study day, “Discovering Duncanson,â€? will be held on Dec. 6, featuring prominent scholars Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, Ph.D., of the National Portrait Gallery, and Dr. Martha Jones, Ph.D., of John Hopkins University. “If you want to study Duncanson as a painter,â€? said associate curator of fine art StĂŠphanie Delamaire, Ph.D., “you want to see this picture.â€? Registration for the Duncanson study day will begin online Friday, Sept. 6. Robert S. Duncanson was an African-American artist who was widely acclaimed by antebellum critics as the “best landscape painter in the West.â€? “Short Mountain,â€? an outstanding composition in pristine condition for its age, equals or surpasses many examples of the mid-19th century American school of landscape painting. “Short Mountainâ€? depicts a panoramic view with a stream, pasture and mountains inspired by the southern Appalachian mountains of Tennessee, where Duncanson was traveling in the early 1850s. “This canvas constitutes a crucial addition to Winterthur Museum’s collection, which had not included a painting representative of this major movement in American culture,â€? said Delamaire. “Duncanson’s painting also contributes to Winterthur’s growing collection of needlework, furniture, and other works of art and material culture created by African Americans, thus constructing a more inclusive view of artistic creation in 19th-century America at Winterthur. The painting will be on view in the galleries in December, where it will present many opportunities for teaching,â€? she continued. Delamaire and Matt Cushman, conservator of painting at Winterthur, authenticated the unsigned “Short Mountainâ€? in part from its technical style, as compared to other Duncanson works from the time, in part from corresponding exhibition records, and in part by a canvas stamp from a dealer in Troy, N.Y., whose date corresponds to the period of Duncanson’s travels in the area. “Short Mountainâ€? remained in the family of its original owner until 2000, when it was sold to a private collector. Delamaire acknowledges a debt to the late Joseph D. Ketner II for his pioneering scholarship on Duncanson. “Short Mountainâ€? bears a striking resemblance to a reviewer’s 1851 description of a painting displayed in the Western Art-Union gallery. “Duncanson’s ‘View on Clinch River’ is a fine picture. It gives a view of the stream for some distance, of a plain on the opposite side, and of hills and mountains in the distance. The water has fine effects, and the distance is revealed as faithfully as in any picture we have seen by this artist, and his distance is good almost

only three such figures ever to be accepted for grading consideration by AFA. The pre-sale estimate is $20,000-$35,000. Proving that lightning can strike twice in the same place, a rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype action figure in AFA 85 NM+ condition from Kenner’s 1979 line is similar to one from the Branton collection that Hakes sold for $86,000 last year. “The current talk is that this is now a six-figure piece. That remains to be seen, but it’s sure to be a contender for the top seller in our July sale,” stated Winter. The estimate is $75,000-$100,000. Over 400 roof-raising American political items follow a timeline from George Washington to the modern era, with many choice highlights included. A truly magnificent brass-framed 1860 campaign ambrotype containing Mathew Brady’s “Cooper Union” portrait of Abraham
A first printing of a poster promoting the Feb. 19, 1966, launch of iconic San Francisco hippie music venue the Family Dog, starring Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother & the Holding Company, is estimated at $20,000-$35,000.

The rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype (L-slot) action figure, AFA 85 NM+ condition, Kenner, 1979, is estimated at $75,000-$100,000. Lincoln is not only a very rare survivor, but also exhibits superior condition. It is estimated at $35,000-$50,000. The most coveted of all political postcards, a Cox-Roosevelt jugate with an Aug. 7, 1920, postal cancellation, comes from the collection of revered postcard expert Hal Ottaway. “Hal considered it the great prize of his collection, and we concur,” said Winter. It is estimated at $20,000-$35,000. The baseball section features two equally rare and important Negro League artifacts. A broadside touting all eight teams (six teams depicted) from the 1935 season is even more significant for the fact that 15 National Baseball Hall of Famers are among them. The best extant example of its type, the poster is estimated at $10,000-$20,000. From the early Cuban baseball era, a real-photo postcard depicting the 1925-26 Havana Baseball Club is notable for the presence of National Baseball Hall of
Famers Martin Dihigo and Jud Wilson. Ex Richard Merkin collection, it is estimated at $10,000-$20,000. Concert posters continue to attract new collectors at each successive Hake’s sale. Another terrific selection awaits bidders in the July 11 session, led by two 1960s classics: a first printing of the poster promoting the 1966 launch of San Francisco’s iconic hippie music venue the Family Dog, est. $20,000$35,000, and a psychedelic poster for Janis Joplin’s March 15, 1969, Ann Arbor, Mich., concert, est. $10,000-$20,000. Hake’s July 10 and 11 auction is now open for bidding and follows the new consecutive two-day format for bidding, as opposed to Hake’s previous method that included a gap day between the two sessions.
