“Frederic Remington At The Met” Exhibits Showcases Paintings, Sculptures, And Works On Paper The artist Frederic Remington (1861–1909), chronicler par excellence of the American West, has long been celebrated for his achievements as an illustrator, painter, sculptor, and writer. At The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibition “Frederic Remington at The Met” will present the artist’s legacy through some 20 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and illustrated books from the late 1880s until his death. Although he lived and worked on the East Coast, Remington traveled extensively. His insightful depictions of trappers, Native Americans, cavalry, scouts, and, above all, his archetypal cowboys are some of the most iconic images of the Old West. The works that will be on view come primarily from The Met’s singular collection, including several sculptures purchased directly from the artist. Drawings related to Remington’s illustration work,

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Seconds Shop

I am coining a new term this month, and that is the seconds shop. Most of you are familiar with seconds stores in regular retail where manufacturers sell items that are flawed or damaged. They are often heavily discounted, and if you don’t mind picking off a weird monogram or a slight imperfection in surface, you can get a real bargain. When I reference this in

reproduction. There was a container load of Orientalia newer than my youngest daughter. Everything had a problem. I have concerns about such shops. First, because they bill themselves as selling fresh estate merchandise, but when you pump them for information, the stories get thin and repeat. Second, is that they lure people into believing that this level of damage is acceptable. Of course, anyone who loves antiques knows that wear is part of the game, but furniture that cannot be used is not cool. Am I going back into that shop again? Actually, yes. First, it helps my eye to see these

good quality? Is the price right? So I came back to the shop after lunch, and I started studying each item as well as looking at the shop in general. Each piece had problems. The andirons were out of period modern decorator copies. The desk was skinned and of poor quality. The sofa had a snapped leg that was crudely nailed in place. Now, one could say that these were in as-found condition, but I came to realize that in fact these were seconds from several dealers and shops in the region. Whether on consignment or owned, they were not first rate antiques - nearly every item had problems. There was china, but it was all

the world of antiques, it is far more insidious. Let me tell you about a shop that I went into recently. It’s a shop that clearly represents a single owner who also has business ties to other shops and dealers. When I walked in, there were a number of pieces that jumped out at me as being of interest. A massive pair of baronial andirons, a plantation desk, a bed, sofa, etc. All were nice quality. Prices were not bargain basement but fair enough, and so I made a mental list and left to take the girls to lunch. I like to do that when I am anticipating a big purchase so that I can really think about the items - particularly if they are furniture. Will they fit into my home? Are they of

century offerings. A highlight of the show will be Restoration by Louis. The owner, Louis Pirello, specializes in pottery and porcelain restoration and prides himself on his meticulous methods of matching colors and glazes. Unlike many restorers, he assures his clients that he will not discolor or overspray their valued pieces. He will be set up onsite to do repairs, so show goers may bring broken china and let him have a look.
